NELSON Mandela Bay will bepart of the country’s recordbreaking attempt to read booksfor over 13 000 children today,Wednesday 5 March.
World Read Aloud Day is part of theNal’ibali reading for enjoyment campaign. It calls on all South Africans to read thesame story aloud to their children, schoolpupils, reading club members and otherchildren in their lives to promote the impor-tance of reading aloud in literacy develop-ment.
According to Sally Mills, Networks andCommunications Coordinator of the Projectfor the Study of Alternative Education inSouth Africa (PRAESA),the Nal’ibali read-ing campaign reached 13 000 children lastyear.
PRAESA is driving theNal’ibali Campaignin all the official languages in South Africa.
According to Mills, Nal’ibali will be pro-moting a special story, How Stories Began, which is a traditional isiZulu story which isretold by the renowned South African Chil-dren’s books author, Cape Town-basedWendy Hartman.
The story is currently available in all 11official languages on the websitewww.nal’ibali.org.
“Research shows that reading aloud is a re-ally important part of building the language, knowledge and motivation all children re-quire as they learn to read,” said PRAESADirector, Dr Carole Bloch.
The focus this year is on motivating par-ents and caregivers to read to the childrenin their lives a little bit more, every day, asreading aloud was a great way to make sto-ries a part of daily life, she said.
NelsonMandela Baywill also be part of thecampaign thanks to the Nal’ibali Clustermentor Malusi Puwe whose love for readinghas earned him the title.
Puwe, who is PRAESA-trained with morethan 20 years of reading experience, will behosting readings from clubs in Uitenhage,Zwide and Motherwell. Puwe starts commu-
nity reading clubs and assists existing clubsin the community and schools aroundNelsonMandela Bay.
Writing in the SouthAfrican Journal of Ed-ucation, UWC academic Dr Sharita Bharu-thram said, “Over the past two decades therehas beenmuchwritten in the literature about
the importance of reading and the impor-tance of teaching students reading strategiesto improve their reading comprehension.”
“Reading is one of the most important aca-demic tasks encountered by students. Stu-dents in higher education are exposed to anumber of texts and textbooks that require
independent reading,” according to Bharu-thram.At this level, they are expected to com-prehend what they read so that they can ana-lyse, critique, evaluate and synthesize infor-mation from various sources.
According to Puwe, to be able to do this, they must be encouraged to love reading.

SEVERAL stakeholders in the fields of sportand tourismmet last week to discuss how bet-ter communities can be built through sportand business involvement therein.
Represented at the meeting held on Fridayat the Boardwalk ICC, were officials of theProvincial Department of Sport and its MECXoliswa Tom, conferred with members of theProvincial Sports Federations, Eastern Cape(EC) Sports Council, Nelson Mandela BayTourism and big business. The MEC reminded those present that the
Eastern Cape was the home of the legendswith an ability to make a positive impact innation building, if people of the provinceworked together.According to the MEC, there was an urgent
need to revive school sport and to ensure com-munity club development. “Sport instills dis-cipline in the minds of the young and pro-motes healthy living,” said Tom, adding that
sports developmentwas also key for social co-hesion.“Let’s identify young people from across
the spectrum to nurture their God-given tal-ents. Let’s establish sport academies at re-gional level. Let’s invest in sport becausewithincreased participation we’ll have a healthyand winning nation,” said MEC Tom.Shewas, however, quick to add, “Asgovern-
ment we can’t do it alone. We need partnersbecause the budget we have as a departmentis minimal. Let us work together in order toachieve our vision of a United, Active andWinning Province.”Mandela Bay Tourism Chief Executive
Mandlakazi Skefile spoke about the economicspin-offs of sports tourism for the hosting cit-ies of major sports events.“NelsonMandela Bay is a DestinationMar-
keting Organisation, aptly referred to as theDMO because of successfully hosting suchhuge events as the Fifa 2010 Soccer WorldCup, The IRB Rugby Sevens, cricket tests andothers,” said Skefile.
According to Skefile, apartfrom the direct economic bene-fits, such events leave behind alegacy of improved infrastruc-ture. She mentioned the world-class stadium, upgraded roads, transport system and hospitali-ty industries.

SOUTHAfricawas victorious in sport dur-ing the apartheid era and sport stars thatcould perform well and make a mark any-where in theworldwereproduced inSouthAfrica.
This is according to SAFA President DrDanny Jordaan who was speaking duringthe Eastern Cape’s Sport Award for Excel-lence on and off the field of play at theBoardwalk ICC. This son of the soil, Jor-daan congratulated thewinners andnomi-nees.He also commended the Department of
Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture aswell as both the EC Sports Council and theEC Academy of Sports for the awards. He said they were on the right track to
turn this country’s reputation among thecountries of the world into great sportingachievements.According to Jordaan, this country’s
performance was excellent during thetimes when government was anti mixedsport. When the outside world isolatedSouth Africa in international sportingevents, great stars emerged.“We have a glorious story to tell since
1990 - the Madiba magic - in this country. We’ve come too far to turn back now,” Jor-daan said. When he took over the reigns of SAFA
presidency, Jordaan said, there were noqualified national coaches for develop-ment football whereas England had 12 000and Spain about 15 000.“We now have 73,” a glowing Jordaan
said, adding that, this was the time for usto re-ignite fire-power into our teams.
Furthermore, football should emulaterugby with its development structures ofU13s to U19s at Provincial level. Theseshould feed the national teams.“As South Africans we are not equal to
the best. We are among the best. We needto get back to the era where we producedheroes under adverse circumstances. Wemust not erect barriers for ourselves. Wecan achieve the impossible,” said Jordaanto a loud applause.

THREE primary schools in Nelson MandelaBay experienced a joyful start to the schoolyear today after receiving a package of tailor-made essential goods from leading industrialgas company, Air Products, as part of its com-mitted corporate social investment activitieslast week.
Last year Air Products handed CommunityChest a donation and the fundraising organi-sation went on to identify needy schools inthe city which would best benefit.
A range of critical infrastructure wasbought for three schools in dire need of ta-bles, chairs and other key operational itemsand delivered amid celebrations and thanks-giving.
Mngcunube Primary School in KwaNobu-hle near Uitenhage received 20 tables, 80chairs and three carpets. NomathamsanqaPrimary School in Despatch accepted a dona-tion of kitchen utensils for the feeding schemeand Kwazakhele-based Seyisi Primary Schoolreceived a sick bed for its first aid room.
Air Products’ Area sales manager, PierreFourie said at the Mngcunube PrimarySchool handover, that it was heart-warmingto see the excitement on the faces of the chil-dren as they received their new desks andchairs.
“The impact that we hope to make is to in-spire the learners and to ensure they look for-ward to coming to school every day. A favour-able learning environment is important andwe are proud to be a part of contributing tothat goal, particularly as Air Products priori-
tizes education as central to our corporate so-cial investment,” says Fourie.
“Education is the key to unlocking the po-tential in future chemical engineers, scien-tists and artisans and it starts at primaryschool level. A small contribution can go thedistance when it comes to changing lives, which is what we aim to do.”
Mngcunube Primary School principal,Monwabisi Pepeta, was overcome with emo-tion, saying, “We are one of the largest prima-ry schools in the area and we struggled to findfunds to buy more desks and chairs for ourlearners. We were blessed by this generousdonation. A real need has been fulfilled and
I am very thankful to Air Products and Com-munity Chest.”
Nomathamsanqa Primary School princi-pal, Thozamile Maqungo, said he was gratefulfor the donation which would contribute tothe school’s feeding programme.
“Previously the children had to stand inlong queues to wait for their meal, and we hadto hand out the food in phases because we didnot have enough plates for each learner. Thiswas a time-consuming and frustrating proc-ess, but we are grateful for, and excited bythe positive change this donation will bring,”says Maqungo.
Seyisi Primary School principal, Xoliswa
Zikishe, also expressed her gratitude on be-half of staff and learners, and said a real needat the school had been fulfilled.
Community Chest Chief Executive, BeulahLumkwana, says the donation came at theright time and would start the school yearoff positively. “This is not just a donation, butrather an investment by Air Products into thefuture of these learners,” she said.
The Community Chest is a fundraising or-ganisation that effectively distributes re-sources to support development initiatives invulnerable communities within Nelson Man-dela Bay and has established an ongoing part-nership with Air Products.

THE future of Motherwell lad Lathi Nqebe (12)looks very bright.
Grey Primary School pupil Lathi, who is inGrade 6, performed during the Nelson Mande-la Metro Schools Athletics meeting at theWestborne Oval stadium last Thursday andFriday.
“He took first position in the Long Jump, Po-sition 2 in the High Jump and won the 100mand 150m track events in his age-group,” saidLathi’s overjoyed father, Mboneli Gunya.PE Express Indaba has learnt that the feat
instead of bringing joy to the family, has rath-er brought confusion. According to Gunya, his
son was a star rugby player. “We always knewhim as a rugby player and did not realise thathe was also talented in athletics - in both thefield and track events,” said Gunya proudly.
Explaining, he said Lathi was an U-11 EPrugby player who was preparing for the Cra-ven Week to be held from March 7 to 9.
“We understand that the Provincial Athlet-ics Games will also be held this weekend. It’sdifficult because he is hoping to get the nodduring the Craven Week at the weekend. Butwe’ll decide soon what we must do,” said Gun-ya who was still shocked but thrilled.
“He loves sport, especially rugby. That’swhat paved his way to being a Grey pupil inthe first place,” agreed Lathi’s mother SheilaNqebe.

SOUTH Africa’s national boxing federationSANABO has been accepted back into the In-ternational Amateur Boxing Control BodyAIBA, said newly elected SANABOPresidentAndile Mofu recently.
According to Mofu, the Switzerland-basedAssociation suspended this country after al-legations that SANABO flouted the AIBArules during December 2012 executive elec-tions where Mofu was elected president.Explaining,Mofu said, “SANABOwas then
under SASCOC administration so there wereallegations that they participated in the elec-tions instead of providing leadership andguidance.”
Suspension meant that South Africa wasnot recognised by AIBA. Their Number Onestatus in Zone 4 countries that include Lesot-ho, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Mozam-bique, Seychelles and Madagascar was com-promised.“We were not part of the AIBA upcoming
international events like the Olympic Gamesand the World Championships. Our boxerswere taken off the AIBA rankings,” said Mo-fu, adding that fortunately AIBA gave themtime to rectify the mistake and come back tothe fold in terms of article 34 of the AIBArules and regulations.Mofu said they formed an interim struc-
ture which worked hard to ensure that theybeat the deadline and indeed on December2013 a new SANABO Executive was elected
under AIBA’s supervision. And, after submitting their constitution
they were subsequently accepted back intothe International Boxing Association other-wise known as AIBA.According to Mofu, SANABO were now
preparing to defend their Zone 4 (Africa)Number One spot in Pretoria in April andthe Commonwealth games in Glasgow inJune.Mofu said they aremaking use of the exist-
ent structures like the EC Academy of Sportand the High Performance Centre in Preto-ria to sharpen the skills of SA boxers. Here’s the SANABO Executive Commit-
tee: Andile Mofu - President, Pieter Kruger- Vice President, Ezekiel Hlasoa - Treasurerand Pretty Tsotetsi - General Secretary.
