RIDDEL’S WAREHOUSE87-91 ANN STREET, BELFAST

Built in 1865-67 by Thomas Jackson & Son, the warehouse has a 65 ft frontage and is fourstories high: the ground floor is built on a plinth of Newry granite, with round headedarches finely carved with water-lilies, ivy, columbine and shamrock, supported on squatpiers with bunches of flowers for capitals, and roundels of floral rosettes in the spandrelsbetween the arches. The upper levels are of “white Glasgow brick” with polychromaticdecoration in stone and banded red and black brickwork. The entire frontage was glazedwith large windows of the then very novel plate glass. At the top is a deep cornice in brickand sandstone and a parapet to the pitched roof behind. With the onset of the Troubles itbecame impossible for Riddels to carry on business in Ann Street. The Warehouse layempty for some years before being acquired by the Police Service as part of the securityprovisions. It is now owned by Hearth Historic Buildings Trust, The Old Museum, 7 CollegeSquare North, Belfast.

Hands of History started twentyyears ago when the artist,Raymond Watson, managed topersuade nine individualsinvolved in crafting theBelfast/Good Friday Agreementto let him take a cast of theirhands. Those initial nine were:Gerry Adams, Malachi Curran,David Ervine, John Hume, GaryMcMichael, Monica McWilliams,Mo Mowlam, Sean Neeson andDavid Trimble.

In the run-up to the 20thanniversary, Raymond hasrevisited this project and castthe hands of others who wereinfluential in promoting thegoals of peace. The artworksfeatured here in ‘An Introductionto Hands of History +20’ are thehands of:

Mo Mowlam was a Labour Partypolitician. She was Member ofParliament (MP) for Redcar from1987 to 2001 and served asSecretary of State for NorthernIreland, 1997-9.
