2010in Review

“Sustainable Development through Peace Building, Governance and Eco-nomic Recovery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” Programme was designed with a two-fold objective; on the one hand it was to support the sustainable return of IDPs through targeted early recovery activities and on the other it was to contribute towards diffusing and preventing local conflicts and gaining a better under-standing of the structural causes of conflict through governance and peace building interventions. These objectives are achieved by focusing on inter-ventions organized around four pillars, one of which is ‘Peace building and social cohesion’. With an aim to alter the aspects of society that led to violence and civil war, and address the damage caused by the violence and conflict, Peace & Development Programme has implemented different types of initiatives. These can be broadly categorized as follows:

1. Indigenous Empowerment for Peace Building: Creating Community Peace Committees

2. Imparting Peace Education through Formal & Informal Means: Teachers Peace Training and Training of the Masses

3. Building Skills for Conflict Sensitive Development: Training the Local Government & CSOs in Conflict Sensitive Planning & Gender Responsive Recovery

4. Social Cohesion through Targeting of Youth: Sports, Quiraat and Debate Competitions

5. Community Based Infrastructure Rehabilitation for Peace Building: Paving of Streets and Drains & Construction of Community Dustbins and In-House Latrines 6. Economic Empowerment; Redefining Boundaries: Skill Building Workshops enabling Economic Empowerment

Community Peace Committees (CPCs) Formation And Training On Conflict Prevention And Resolution Skills

In order to help improve the socio-economic fabric of the region, Community Peace Committees (CPC’s) have been formed and trained on conflict prevention and resolution skills.

This particular intervention has encouraged dialogue on peace and conflict and has greatly capacitated the communities to tackle and augment social cohesion in the Malakand Division.

Achievements:

Conflict Intervention Structures called ‘Peace Committees’ at grass root level Fully functional 9 Peace Committees in 9 select Union Councils within the 5 districts formed, these include 2 female Peace Committees.

Imparting Peace Education Through Formal & Informal Means:

Participants from all walks of life in the region, including, teachers, religious leaders, local government elected representatives, lawyers, people of influence and local residents, were trained on peace edu-cation. These sessions were aimed at achieving better understanding of conflict management techniques among the masses. Achievements:

1366 individuals (1001 males and 365 females) equipped with skills of peace maintaining and through 17 different Peace Education Training sessions in the Malakand Division.

These included 11 training sessions only for females, attended by 365 females at various locations.

Social Cohesion Through Targeting Youth Intensive Activities:

Vulnerability and critical role played by the youth of any society, con-stitutes one of the major focal points for the Peace & Development Programme.

Achievements:

• More than 5000 youth engaged through various sports competition under ‘Swat Aman Festival’

• 450 youth engaged through various sports competitions:

340 youth engaged through 6 Cricket matches held at Dir Lower

50 youth engaged through 1 Volley ball match at Dir Lower

60 youth engaged through 1 Basketball match held at Dir Lower

2940 youth engaged through ‘Quiraat’ (Quran recitation) and speech competition in Dir Lower. This included 560 females

Social Cohesion Through TargetingYouth Intensive Activities

Building Skills For Conflict Sensitive Development:

Conflict sensitive planning and gender responsive recovery incorporated in the project cycles of local CSOs and local government office in District Swat & Buner.

Achievements:

A total of 4 conflict sensitive and gender responsive recovery trainings were conducted for 200 participants: 109 males and 91 females, at Peshawar, Swat and Buner.

Amongst the total participants, 39 were trained as Male Trainer Masters and 21 as female Trainer Masters.

Community Based Infrastructure Rehabilitation For Peace Building:

Under the Peace and Development Programme, numerous CBI initiatives were taken, and successfully yielded the following results:

Achievements:

4300 ft streets including 1600 ft stairs have been made and paved along with 2000 ft drains in Village Khadar Khan, Akhunkhail Dehrai, Checklai and Khararai (550 ft in village Khadar Khan, 1120 ft in Akhunkhail Dehrai, 200 ft in Checklai, while the remaining 2430 feet in village Khararai).

Moreover, 280 ft of a retaining wall has been constructed and the street has been made in the area (30 ft in Khararai, 240 in Akhunkhail Dehrai and 10 ft in Checklai).

Provision of 20 dustbins and 8 in-house latrines constructed in Tehsil Timergara, Lower Dir District.

Community Based Infrastructure Rehabilitation For Peace Building

Economic Empowerment:

Access of conflict affected communities to socio economic services and livelihood opportunities was enhanced through various trainings, skill development programs and cash for work opportunities extended to the masses.

Achievements:

75 unskilled and jobless youth of Khwaza Khela and Kabal, Swat made ‘self employed’ through provision of 45-days skill development trainings in 5 selected trades (electrician, plumbing, welding, auto mechanic and masonry) during November 8, 2010 and December 23, 2010.

220 vulnerable individuals, including 25 women fully equipped with necessary skills for running and sustaining a microenterprise through 3-day Basic Enterprise Development Training

25 Women embarked upon new microenterprise initiatives through provision of cash grant.

11 women ‘self employed’ under ‘poultry husbandry’ after provision of 5-days training and provision of poultry units

202 individuals ‘self employed’ in home-based ‘poultry rearing’ business after provision of improved breed poultry units in Swat & Buner

10 individuals running poultry business after being trained through 3-day poultry extension workers training and equipped through provision of ‘tool kits’.o 10 ‘agriculture input supply stores’ established by trained individuals who were given agriculture input for stores
