Sixth Sunday of Easter • May 26, 2019

The congregation’s responses are printed in bold type

Please stand as you are able and join us in singing.

Come and Gather Beneath the Tree of Life

Please sing the refrain; the choir sings the verse.

Flowing from this tree of grace and passion, Oh, how sweet the taste, how deep and rich the wellspring of your love. Here beneath the branches of your mercy, We invoke your name, remember how your love has set us free.

We repeat the refrain.

Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let us confess our sins to God. We take a moment for silent confession.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, is rich in mercy and loved us even when we were dead in sin. He has made us alive in Christ: by grace you have been saved! In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. May God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.

No. 377 Alleluia! Jesus Is Risen! (opposite page)

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love toward you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be with you always! And also with you! Please greet those around you and be seated.

A reading from Revelation, the twenty-first and twenty-second chapters.

[John writes,] … in the spirit [the angel] carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.

I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day – and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. (Revelation 21:10, 22; 22:1 – 5)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel according to John, the fourteenth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord!

Jesus [said], “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me.

“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

“You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe.” (John 14:23 – 29)

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ! Please repeat the Acclamation, then be seated.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Trusting in God’s promise of new life in Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need. We take a moment for silent reflection.

Each petition ends with the following response: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please be seated.

Alabaré Alabaré, alabaré, alabaré a mi Señor. (I will praise my Lord)

John saw the number of all those redeemed, And all were singing praises to the Lord. Thousands were praying, ten thousands rejoicing, And all were singing praises to the Lord.

Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, Whose blood set us free from our sins. Power and riches and wisdom and strength And honor and blessing shall be his.

Sing with the people, the people of God, And join creation in a joyful hymn. Blessing and honor and glory and might To God and to the Lamb be without end!

This Is the Feast Please sing the refrain; the choir sings the verse.

Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, Whose blood set us free to be people of God. Power, riches, wisdom, and strength, And honor, blessing, and glory are his.

We repeat the refrain.

As our great High Priest, Lord Jesus, be present as you were present with your disciples, and be known to us in the breaking of the bread, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, O God of the universe … … as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

O God of resurrection and new life … … Grace our table with your presence. Come, Holy Spirit!

Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread … … Send us forth, burning with justice, peace, and love. Come, Holy Spirit!

With your holy ones of all times and places … … we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen.

As our Savior taught us, so we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Come to the banquet, for all is now ready. Thanks be to God! Please be seated.

The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen.

O God our King, by the resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ, you conquered sin, put death to flight, and gave us the hope of eternal life. You have graciously accepted us as living members of our Savior, and you have fed us with bread and wine, the sacrament of his body and blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
