The Peacejam story

The PeaceJam Foundation was launched in February 1996 by co-founders Dawn Engle and Ivan Suvanjieff.

Suvanjieff conceived the idea forPeaceJam in the summer of 1994 whentalking to some gang members fromhis neighborhood in north Denver. He discovered that the gun-carryingyouth not only knew who ArchbishopDesmond Tutu was, they appreciatedhis nonviolent efforts toward socialchange. As an artist, Suvanjieff merely connected the dots and realized the power of connecting these disaffected youths with Nobel Peace Laureates as role models for positive change. Engle had previously met the Dalai Lama through her years working for the U.S. Congress, where she lobbied on behalf of the Tibetan cause. Engle and Suvanjieff were granted an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who liked the idea.

Peace Laureates were interested in the idea of peace education for youth. PeaceJam soon provided the Nobel Peace Laureates with programmatic ways to work together and teach peace to the youth of the world. Engle and Suvanjieff were married by Archbishop Tutu in his church in Cape Town, South Africa in 2001.

Since then, the PeaceJam Foundation has become the global leader in developing young leaders committed to positive change in themselves and their communities through the inspiration of 14 Nobel Peace Prize winners who pass on the spirit, skills, and wisdom they embody. PeaceJam accomplishes this mission through award-winning documentary films, service-learning curricula, and events around the world that have engaged more than a million youth world-wide and inspired millions of high-quality service projects.

In September 2006, 10 Nobel Peace Laureates from PeaceJam issued a Global Call to Action, calling on youth to tackle what they perceived as the most pressing issues facing our planet. PeaceJam youth responded and created over two million projects. In 2014, the PeaceJam Foundation partnered with Google and others to rebrand and relaunch this campaign as the Billion Acts of Peace Campaign. It is now a global citizens’ campaign designed to engage the world and inspire acts of peace in 10 key focus areas -- such as ending racism and hate, alleviating extreme poverty, rights for women and children, and environmental sustainability. Almost 40 million acts of peace have been logged on billionacts.org.

2017 Highlights

ProgramsThe PeaceJam Foundation received a prestigious grant from the European Commission to strengthen and expand the PeaceJam programming in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Greece, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Romania. Over the next twelve months a PeaceJam Europe Foundation will be created to raise matching funds, and training will begin for the creation of a regional, European based team which will carry out all of the objectives of the European Commission grant, as well as bringing PeaceJam programming to additional countries on the European continent.

Billion Acts of PeaceSince April 2017, the One Billion Acts of Peace campaign has logged more than 18 Million Acts of Peace - the largest jump in the history of the campaign. The site has been visited by citizens from every country in the world except North Korea, with Acts of Peace originated in 151 countries - up from 110 the year before. Network Members rose from 108 to 149, and many new partners came on board to create new school and city-wide initiatives that brought entire communities together in service and volunteerism. Many improvements and new features were added to the website to engage even more participants, and social media channels for PeaceJam and Billion Acts surpassed 1.1 Million followers.

Over the past 20 years, PeaceJam has impacted 1.25 million youth in 40 countries through 6 award-winning curricula and almost 350 youth leadership conferences with Nobel Peace Laureates. Nobel Legacy FilmIn 2017, PeaceJam released the 4th film in the Nobel Legacy Film Series, “Without a Shot Fired,” featuring President Oscar Arias. This award-winning documentary shares the story of a tiny country that made a decision to do something that no other country had ever done -- it decided to abolish its army and declare peace to the rest of the world. The film premiered in Monaco in June 2017 as part of the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo. PeaceJam also created an educational package for the film which includes a Study Guide allowing schools, universities, and communities to host film screenings and dialogues.

Four Day International WorkshopOn August 17-20 PeaceJam hosted its annual four day Affiliate Retreat where Affiliate Coordinators, Emcees and other Specialists travelled from around the world to receive professional development. This year was our largest retreat ever with 35 people from 14 regions around the world. The agenda focused on strategic planning, business sustainability practices, reviewing guidelines, social media strategies, and much more. Though lead by PeaceJam HQ’s, Dr. Kate Cumbo, the retreat emphasized peer to peer dialogue and workshopping so that Affiliate Coordinators could work together to solve the respective issues within their own regions together.

Hero Awards2017 Hero Awards semifinalists were selected from over 10 million projects logged from 151 countries around the world. In April, twelve semifinalists were highlighted in six categories: Best Youth Act, Best Entrepreneurial Act, Best University Act, Best Community Act, Best Non-Profit Act, and Best Up and Coming Peacemaker. In May, seven award winners were chosen based on online voting results and the impact of each project. This was the first time both youth Acts won the award. Each winner was honored in Monte Carlo and received their award from Nobel Peace Laureate Oscar Arias. Several of the winners and semifinalists attended the PeaceJam Monaco conference and presented workshops. We hope to continue this tradition as it was inspiring to all.

European Expansion. Implementation of the European Commission grant to strengthen and expand PeaceJam programming in six countries in Europe has begun, using the newly developed “Compassion in Action: Creating Inclusive Communities” curriculum as our main tool. Training and expansion is now underway in Belgium, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Greece, and Romania. The first training session for a new European based regional team will be held in Monaco in June, and a new PeaceJam Europe Foundation has been established and granted tax exempt status in The Netherlands. In addition, through the European Commission’s E-Twinning program, thousands of teachers in additional countries throughout Europe are being introduced to the PeaceJam programming and curriculum, for use in their own schools and communities.

BILLION ACTS CAMPAIGN. We are very excited to announce that our 2018 Hero Award Nominees include: Rotary International, Mercy Corps, IKEA Foundation, Rethaka, We Dine Together, Techo, Ba Futuru and many more! In 2018 the Billion Acts team will be focusing on mobilizing the Billion Acts global network, securing corporate sponsors for our focus areas, making improvements to the website’s home page and on-boarding process, improving student portfolios, beta testing for CSR and employee engagement opportunities, and working with high-profile partners to continue to scale our impact and reach.

Contagious Courage. This is the story of a young mother living in Northern Ireland fifty years ago, as her country teetered on the brink of civil war. The film tells the tale of a quiet revolution, requiring tremendous courage, that began when three little children were killed. Hundreds of thousands of people - mainly women - rose up to demand that their country change, and then took the concrete action necessary to create that change, themselves. With never-before-seen footage and behind the scenes interviews, “Betty Williams: Contagious Courage” shows how average people can overcome their fear, and how one person can make a difference in a violent and unpredictable world.
