The Sisters of St. Francis of Peace do not sell or share any names, addresses, or other information with anyone else.

In 1980, when La-dycliff College closed her doors, the annual Mother-Daughter Lun-cheon evolved into the Ladycliff College Alumnae Association Annual Luncheon. The fundraising mission of the luncheon was and is to give back to the sisters who gave so much in many ways un-told. Unfortunately, the

only thing constant in life is change. As our numbers decrease, so have the number of luncheon attendees.

On Saturday, June 8th all are invited to meet at the Thayer Hotel. You are invited to join us for the 9:00 AM Mass at Sacred Heart Church (across the street from the college). This Liturgy is offered for the living and deceased members of our Ladycliff Family. Our annual luncheon at the Thayer Hotel will begin with cocktails at 11:00 AM. As in the past, the Franciscan Sisters from Peekskill and the Franciscan Sisters of Peace will be our honored guests and all our proceeds as well as additional donations received are for the benefit of the

Sisters. Please make a concerted effort to attend this year’s luncheon. We don’t want it to be our last.

We hope you are looking forward to joining us – and will call your roommate and classmates to make plans to join you. The anniversary classes always have especially good turnouts. If your year was ‘39, ‘44, ‘49, ‘54, ‘59 ‘64, ‘69, ‘74, ‘79 there will be lots of folks here looking for you.

Be sure to leave plenty of time to pass through Thayer Gate at West Point to the hotel entrance. NOTE: Identification/photo ID is required for drivers AND ALL PASSENGERS.

No Greater LoveMany of us may not be aware, myself included, that

the first Mother’s Day was proclaimed on May 9, 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson through the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who was inspired by HER mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis. Anna Jarvis, an impressionable child and teenager, witnessed her mother’s courageous work as she organized “Mothers’ Work Day Clubs” in the 1850’s in the Grafton, WV area. These clubs gave medicines to the poor; inspected milk for children; provided nursing care for the sick, and shelters for children with tuberculosis. When the Civil War broke out, some of her clubs were asked to make a pledge that “friendship and good will would not be a casualty of war”. The women nursed the soldiers from both sides and saved many lives in a remarkable display of courage and compassion. After the war, Anna continued her peacemaking efforts. Since the wounds and animosity between families who fought on either side were deep and harsh, Anna organized “Mothers’ Friendship Days” to bring together families across the Mason Dixon line. It was in 1907, two years after her mother’s death, that Anna Jarvis organized the first “Mother’s Day” in Grafton, WV as a testimony to her mother’s work of peacemaking and war against poverty. (Anna Jarvis later tried to remove the day from the calendar due to how the holiday had been commercialized.)

Besides Anna Jarvis, another early promotor of Mother’s Day was Julia Ward Howe, the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic and initially a militant abolitionist; however, as the Civil War dragged on and she saw the terrible price of conflict, she abandoned her militant attitude. Julia be-gan to focus on voting rights for women and world peace, as a result of the Franco- Prussian War which started in Europe in 1870. She wrote: “Why do not the mothers of mankind interfere in these matters to prevent the waste of that human life of which they alone know and bear the

cost?”From the beginning for these

women, this was not a day to sim-ply remember one’s own mother. The struggle to gain voting rights for women, the cause of peace among the nations of the world, the fight against poverty and the abuse of children became the cen-tral concerns of those who estab-lished Mother’s Day. These women wanted to celebrate what they had learned from pain and suffering: what is the essential meaning of life for us all!

With the recent commemoration of Holy Week and cel-ebration of Easter, we are reminded that in the pain of Je-sus’ suffering and death and Resurrection, He exhibited a love that knows no bounds. God’s love extends across the boundaries that separate families, tribes and nations from each other. Many biblical scholars and theologians identify in the Bible numerous images and metaphors that illuminate God’s maternal care for creation. The wisdom of God was often personified as one in whom there dwells a compassion that is clearly maternal. As a mother comforts her child, so too God comforts those who lament (Is 66:13); however, unlike some human mothers, God…will never for-get the children of her womb (Hos 11:3-4; Is 49:15). This understanding of God’s nature is the antidote we need in the face of the ills of our culture and Civilization. The one thing that can free us from the anxieties, and pressures in a hectic world is the knowledge and experience that we are ALL loved by God. We are challenged to bear God to a world in need and in doing so we are transformed and par-ticipate in the mediation of God’s love to others!

New Franciscan Sisters of Peace Leadership Elected April 6, 2019On Saturday, April 6, 2019, the Franciscan Sisters of Peace elected

new leaders for the next four years, taking office on July 1, 2019. Elected were Sisters Helen Wacker, Congregation Minister, Sister Dorothy DeYoung, Assistant Congregation Minister, and three Council Members: Sister Jeanne Gilligan, Sister Regina Holtz, and Sister Maureen Colleary.

Sister Helen Wacker, Sister Dorothy DeYoung, along with our outgoing leadership councilors: Sisters Ellen Byrnes, Cecelia Hall and Pat McDermott have done an outstanding job the past four years. They have established a solid foundation for future growth in mission, laying the groundwork for many important projects and improvements. With the combined talents and gifts of the five incoming leaders, and assured of God’s blessing on our mission, we have reason for great hope and confidence in our future. With all of our gifts and our commitment, together we can proclaim God’s covenant of justice, love, peace and compassion.

Sisters Regina Holtz, Maureen Colleary, Helen Wacker, Dorothy De Young, Jeanne Gilligan

We continue to implement “new begin-nings” in our Haverstraw Offices. It is with sincere appreciation and gratitude that the Franciscan Sisters of Peace, an-nounce the retirement of Evelyn Ruggiero as our Congregation Secretary. After ten years of dedicated service Evelyn retired to spend more time with her growing fam-

ily. Evelyn was commitment to our Franciscan mission and shared her outgoing spirit of generosity with all.

We are happy to announce that Susan Lennon has joined the Franciscan Center as our new Congregation Secretary. Susan brings technological experience, spirit, enthusiasm and energy in this important role. I will let Susan tell you a little about herself:

“Even though I was born in Connecticut, I grew up in Monroe, NY and still live there today. I have been married for almost 28 years and have 2 children. My husband Rob-ert is a Chief in the NYC Fire Department. My daughter, Maura, is a Junior at Dean College in Franklin MA, pursuing a dual degree in Dance and Performance Arts Management. Maura is currently spending a semester abroad, living in Buenos Aries, Argentina. My son, William is a Junior at Don Bosco Prep HS in Ramsey, NJ. He is a member of the Varsity Ski Team and Varsity Mountain Bike Team.

… And now about me…I attended Sacred Heart School, John S. Burke HS and

Villanova University. My professional experience and back-ground are in Analytical Reporting and Database Man-

agement. I was an IT consultant in the tri-state area and worked at many different companies including Goldman Sachs, Clairol, Behringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, and Reckitt Benkeiser. After my children were born, I gave up the stress, travel, and time commit-ments as an IT consultant to work closer to home. While I always somehow managed to teach one ballet class a week since before I was married, remaining local with my young children, allowed me to increase the number of classes I taught. When I left ballet teaching in 2016 after 27 years, I was teaching 12 group classes and 8 private lessons a week. I continue to serve as choreographer for our local public HS musical theater productions. This year will be my 14th pro-duction. Every year I have a cast of 80 to 140 children, most of them have never had any formal dance training. It is a creative challenge to get 100 non-dancers, on stage to look professional and entertaining! I willingly accept the challenge year after year.

I am very happy to be here with the Franciscan Sisters of Peace. Any sister I’ve been in contact with in the congrega-tion has given me a warm welcome. This job is perfect for me at this point in my life. I look forward to merging all of my past professional experiences and connections in order to help create more visibility and attention to this special group of sisters. I’m here to be of help wherever possible and look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling employment.”

Never Give UpSister Alice Francis Nagl, FSP

While still in High School I was diagnosed with Scoliosis - which is curvature of the spine. I had surgery to correct this and it was a success. I remained in the hospital for 3 months and when I was discharged, I wore a body cast for 3 more months. When the cast was taken off, I was able to return to High School and resume most of my activities.

In September 1964 I entered the Franciscan Sisters and became a teacher. I was able to do the tasks I needed to do as a primary grade teacher. As the years went on, I began to experience back pain. I went to several doctors who recommended pain injections and physical therapy, this helped for a while. In my 60’s the curvature returned in my lower back and I became quite bent over. Doctors said that any surgery would be too risky. They felt there was nothing that could be done.

In 2018, and now in my 70’s, the Leadership of my community recommended a consult with Doctor Buckland of NYU Hospital in New York City who might be able to help me. After months of tests and x-rays, Dr. Buckland

said he could do surgery to correct my severe curvature. I had the surgery in August 2018. The surgery was a huge success, thanks to the skill of the doctor and so many people praying for me. I am now standing straight and tall. I feel it was a true miracle. I spent two weeks in a Rehab. facility and then came home to continue therapy for 2 months. I now go to outpatient therapy. When I came home it was wonderful for me to experience things that most people take for granted. I could now see the top of the

mirror in the bathroom; and the top of the thermostat; I could now reach dishes in the closet, these are only a few of the changes in my life.

On April 11, 2019, I returned to the hospital for surgery to correct my hip, needed to improve my walking. It was another successful surgery! After more therapy I am looking forward to walking tall and straight without any pain.

I thank God and am so grateful to all the people who have helped me these past months to make this miracle happen. So, don’t ever give up - there is always hope!

Celebrating New Life – Sister Kathleen Doyle, FSP(Formerly Sister. Dolores Marie)

Kathleen Doyle was born on February 3, 1928 in Astoria Queens, NY to Catherine (McCarthy) and William Doyle. She had three siblings: Marie (now deceased), Wil-liam and Dolores. Kathleen graduated from Bishop McDonnell High School, Brooklyn, NY in 1946. She entered the novitiate of the Franciscan Sisters in Peekskill, NY on 9-8-1946. She was familiar with these Sisters as her aunt, Sr. Miriam Francis McCarthy, was a member of the congregation. After her religious profession, Sr. Kathleen re-ceived her B.A. degree from Ladycliff Col-lege, Highland Falls, NY. She later earned a

Master’s degree in English from St. Bonaventure University, Olean, New York. In 1977 she spent a sabbatical year in the Religious Leaders Program at the University of Notre Dame, IN. The following year she enrolled in the Clinical Pastoral Program at Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen, MA and in 1999 earned her CPE. Sr. Kathleen was first assigned to the field of Education. From 1949 to 1950 she taught at St. Leo’s School in Elmwood Park, NJ. She then spent seven years on the faculty of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School in Manhattan, followed by one year at St. Matthew’s School, Hastings, NY. In 1958 she was assigned to the staff of St. Joseph’s Home for children in Peekskill as teacher and child care worker and spent four years in that role. In 1962, Sr. Kathleen transferred to the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Home in the Bronx as a teacher for one year, followed by one year at the Assisium Business School in NYC. From 1964 to 1967, she returned to the Kennedy Home as Assistant Ad-ministrator. Sr. Kathleen returned to teaching in 1967 spending one year at St. Patrick’s School, Yorktown Heights, NY. The follow-

ing year she was assigned to Ladycliff Academy which had been moved from Highland Falls to a new campus at Mohegan Lake, NY. Sr. Kathleen was named Principal of this all girls high school. During her tenure as Principal from 1968-1977, Sr. expanded the school to be coeducational, admitting male students. After her sab-batical year, Sr. Kathleen pursued training in Clinical Pastoral Care as mentioned earlier. After earning her CPE, she spent one year as a Pastoral Care Minister at Crouse-Irving Hospital in Syracuse, NY. Returning to New York City, Sr. Kathleen joined the Pastoral Care staff of Calvary Hospital in the Bronx in 1980 and ministered there for three years. Sr. Kathleen transferred to the Pastoral Care de-partment of Misericordia/Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, NYC in 1983 as Assistant Administrator of Pastoral Ministry. For the next nine years she held various positions at the hospital: Vice President for Community Affairs; Director of Pastoral Care; Coordinating Man-ager of Pastoral Care. These responsibilities took her as well to the D’Urso Pavilion of Our Lady of Mercy located in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. Sr. also spent one-year as a Pastoral Care staff member at Metropolitan Hospital, NYC. In 1986 Sr. Kathleen be-came a founding member of the new Congregation – Franciscan Sis-ters of Peace. In 2002 Sr. Kathleen retired from active ministry due to health issues and volunteered on a part-time basis at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Yonkers, NY. In 2004 she moved to Marian Woods – the retirement residence for our Sisters. Sr. Kathleen lived there until the fall of 2013 when her health care needs required her transfer to the Cabrini Nursing Home, Dobbs Ferry, NY. Sr. Kathleen will be remembered as a dedicated teacher and loyal friend. She responded to the needs of others and offered to be of help whenever possible. Kathleen, you have blessed us with your kindness, gentleness of spirit, compassion and most of all your deep devotion and dedica-tion to following in the footprints of St. Francis.

Celebrating New Life – Sister Sebastian Conlon, FSPSister Sebastian Conlon, FSP of the Franciscan Sisters of Peace,

died on December 30, 2018 in Cabrini Nursing Home. She was 95 years old.

Born in Jersey City, N.J. on Sept. 11, 1923, Genevieve was the daughter of Genevieve and Thomas Conlon. Sister had six siblings: Dolores, Thomas, Marie, Rosemary, Imelda and Kirby.

Genevieve was raised in Bogota, NJ and attended St. Joseph’s Parish School where the Franciscan Sisters of Peekskill staffed the school. She later graduated from St. Cecilia High School in Engle-wood, NJ.

She entered the novitiate of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters in Peekskill, NY on September 8, 1941 at the age of 18 and professed final vows in 1948. After her religious profession she earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education at Fordham University and later a Masters degree in Latin at St. Bonaventure University, Olean, NY. She also held NY State Certification.

Sister Sebastian served at Sacred Heart School, Yonkers, St. Matthew School, Hastings-on-Hudson, Sacred Heart, Highland Falls, Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy School, the Bronx, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Manhattan, Holy Name of Mary, Croton-on-Hudson, St. Jerome’s Day Nursery, the Bronx, St. Margaret’s Nursery, the Bronx and St. Joseph’s, West New York, NJ.

Sister Sebastian has always been active in matters regarding her religious commu-nity. She was a member of the Provincial Council from 1963 to 1969. She served on committees and other hoc groups. In 1986 she became a founding member of the newly formed Congregation – Franciscan Sisters of Peace. In 2001 Sister Sebastian retired and moved to Marian Woods – the newly opened residence for retired sisters in Hartsdale, NY. She remained in residence until 2009 when ill health required a move to Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Well into her 90’s Sister Sebastian remained alert and interested in congrega-tion and civic matters and involved in the large family to which she belonged. Sister Sebastian was a kind and gentle woman who made a difference in the lives of those who were taught and or touched by her presence. She served her God and congregation faithfully for more than seventy-seven years as a Franciscan Sister. We thank God for her and we pray she may enjoy the fullness of life in the presence of the God she loved and so faithfully served. Eternal Rest grant unto her, O Lord. May she rest in PEACE! Sister Clare Kelleher, FSP

A Franciscan and contemporary of St. Francis himself, St. Anthony was known for his profound faith and power of his preaching. His extraordinary mission to bring people closer to God continued even after his death. His name is still called upon in times of need.

Just as St. Anthony dedicated his life to the poor and to help-ing ordinary people find their way back to God, the Franciscan Sisters of Peace are dedicated to serving those in need, and those struggling with life’s challenges. We could not fulfill our mission without the help and prayers of our friends, and benefactors. It is your kind support that makes it possible for us to reach out to others wherever we see the need.

May St. Anthony embrace you close to his heart as he embraced the infant Jesus. May he in his love help you and those you love find the everlasting peace only our Lord can bring. And may our ever-merci-ful God bless you for your generosity.
