The mission of the Wilkerson school community is to ensure that all children will learn. We will develop socially responsible
lifelong learners by providing a safe and positive environment that celebrates the individual successes of all children. We will

PRINCIPAL’S
CORNER
It is time to welcome in winter. As much as I
have enjoyed the warmth and sunshine, we all
know what is coming.
In regards to attendance, remember that the
first bell rings at 8:17am. We hope that all
students are ready to enter the building at
that time. As the weather gets colder and
the parking lot gets messy with snow, please
leave early enough to make sure that your
student can be in class when school starts at
8:22 am. When the late bell rings at 8:22 am,
we expect all students to be in their class and
at their desk. Be aware that there is district
policy addressing continual absences and
tardiness, and that Wilkerson will follow
those procedures. If for some reason
students are tardy, they must be signed into
the front office. Please safely park your
vehicle and escort your child into the building.
As we prepare for the cold of winter,
remember that we go outside for recess as
long as the temperature is over 15 degrees.
Please make sure that your children wear
their boots, coats, gloves and hats.
Parents have brought in “special, fast food”
lunches for their children. While this is
special for your child, it does create issues
(delivery of food that is no longer warm, food
allergies jealousy from other students, etc.).
Please try to save special “celebration meals”
for outside of school.
If you use handicapped parking,
please make sure your permit is
displayed. Those spaces are
reserved for people with a handicap parking
placard or license plate.
REMEMBER GYM SHOES!!! Parents, please help
students to remember
to wear gym shoes on
days they have gym class. Also, be
sure to note that boots cannot be
worn to gym class.
HAVE A MINUTE? Actually, an hour or two would
be great, but of course we
take any time you can give.
Many volunteers are still needed for various
activities. Please do not hesitate to get
involved. Not only can you volunteer in your
child’s class, we have opportunities in the
media center, after school activities, PTO
events or simply helping children. Let your
child’s teacher know you are available, or stop
by the office and see Mr. Schulte. We will
gladly find a place to showcase your talents.
All volunteers must fill out a background
check form each school year. These forms
can be found in the office.
STUDENT
VERIFICATION
SHEETS As another new year begins, it is time to make
sure we have all the correct phone numbers
and emergency contacts on your child’s card.
Are the contact’s still available? Do you want
to add more contacts? Has your work place
changed? Would you like to add your email
address?
Maybe you have a new cell phone number and
the school should have that number. To best
serve your child’s needs we must have the
latest information. A special thank you goes
to those parents who let us know of changes
promptly.
DOCTOR
APPOINTMENTS The monthly calendar is
published in our newsletter so
parents know what is going on in
school as well as days and half-
days off. I know that many doctors do not
have late afternoon or evening appointments
and that it is necessary to make morning or
early afternoon appointments. We ask that
you try to make them on half-days or days
off. When a child is to leave class for such
an appointment not only do they miss the
lesson at that time, but many of them are
thinking about the time to leave and are not
concentrating on the lesson they are to be
working on. Working together to educate
every child to their fullest potential is our
mission at Wilkerson.
WINTER WEATHER TIME Please remember that the
students do go out for recess
if the temperature (wind chill)
is 15° or above, and should be
dressed properly with warm coats, hats, snow
pants, gloves, boots, scarves, etc. Please
mark names in all items of clothing. If
something is missing, check the lost & found.

The Wilkerson Staff would like to wish
everyone a Happy and Safe holiday season!!
BUS DELAYS Heavy rains, flooding, fog or snow may cause
school bus delays. All buses are scheduled to
be at appointed stops within several minutes
of an established time. Road conditions and
traffic will sometimes cause delay. If this
happens, all students should follow this
procedure:
1. Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early. If
the bus driver does not see anyone standing
there they will not stop. Wait at the stop at
least 20 minutes, and then return home.
Students should try to have someone
transport them to school. The school bus will
take the child home after school.
2. During severe weather, listen to local radio
or TV stations for information on bus
schedules or school closings before going to
the bus stop.
Safety is the #1 concern in our school. It is
tradition that school personnel discuss and
practice with students what is expected of
them during an emergency. Each year we
practice fire drills, tornado drills and lock
down drills.
The procedure for such a drill will begin with
an announcement made to the staff. The
teachers will close and lock their doors and
close their blinds. STUDENTS WILL NOT
BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE
CLASSROOM DURING THE DRILL.
The custodian will lock and check all outside
doors and lock the media center doors. The
office will clear the phone lines and keep
them open. Once the emergency is over,
another announcement will be made and we
will return to our regular daily routine.
WE’RE COUNTING ON YOU!!
Please encourage responsibility by having
your child prepare for school the night
before by placing homework, books, notes,
lunch money, etc. in their backpacks.
We ask that you do not interrupt classes
in session to speak with a teacher or give
something to your child. Student materials,
lunches, etc., are to be dropped off in the
office, NOT dropped off at the classroom.
Materials will be delivered by our service
squad or the student will be called down to
the office to pick them up. Parents dropping
off your children in the morning, please say
your goodbye’s at the door. Homework requests for absent students –
if it is only a one-day occurrence, the child
can receive the homework the next day from
the teacher.
SNOW AND ICE!! There is NO snowball throwing on the way to
school, at school, or on the way home from
school. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO
THROW SNOWBALLS!!! Serious injuries can
occur when snowballs, often turned to ice, are
hurled. Because safety is our major concern,
students caught with snowballs will be
promptly and appropriately disciplined.
The snow piles that may surround
the school can be huge and inviting
to students. Unfortunately,
students do not see the danger of slipping
into the parking lot or cutting themselves on
the icy chunks hidden in the snow because of
the rough play that tends to happen.
Since we will be informing students not to
throw snowballs and to stay off the piles of
snow around the building, we hope you will
discuss these rules with your child to help
insure their safety.
