Rules and Conventions: I am observing the Barclays Premier League for my figured world. It is

a soccer league in England. It is considered the best league in the world by many. People all around the

world watch these games every week because they love soccer. Soccer is a huge part of many different

cultures. Children all around the world can just grab a ball and start kicking it around with friends.

The games take place on a soccer field inside of a stadium. The fields look massive on television.

The players need to be in shape to run such long distances. With every sport there are rules. The basic

rules are: each team tries to kick the ball into the opposing teams net, the teams must stay inside the

outer white lines on the field, and each team can defend the opposing team by kick or stealing the ball

away as long as they do not foul. Fouls are unacceptable during the game, but the problem is that it is up

to the referee of how strict he wants to enforce the rules. Two footed slide tackles are always a bad

thing, but a full arm extension is not always considered a foul. If a foul is bad enough the “ref” will show

a card. Yellow is a dangerous tackle and red is for a very dangerous foul. Red cards can also be given for

fouling on an open run that could result in a goal, or hand balling, hitting the ball with your arm from

slightly above the elbow to the fingers, to stop a goal. Two yellow cards equals a red card.

There are a few discourse communities in the game. First there are the teams. These are the

most important ones. The fans are the second community on the list. They cheer their teams on to try to

motivate them to win. The coaching staffs try to prepare the teams for the games and try a make

decisions during the game to help their team gain an advantage.

Each team has a goal keeper, a defense, a midfield, and an offense. The keeper is the last line of

defense for the goal. The defense is the main protection of the goal. The midfield is transition from

defense to offense. Offense is the main goal scoring position.

Location: Stamford Bridge, Chelsea, London, England

Actors: The referees play a part by keeping the players in line and judging boundaries.

The coaches determine strategy for the game:

Jose Mourinho is the coach of Chelsea and he is one of the best coaches in the world right now.

He has never lost a game at Stamford Bridge.

The players ultimately win or lose the game:

Czech is one of the best goalie in the world. He is a big part of Chelsea’s defense.

Manchester United has two of the best strikers in the world in Rooney and Van Persie, but both

of them are hurt

Artifacts:

The soccer ball: it is what they use to play the world’s most recognized sport.

The jerseys: Each team has their own jersey design that signifies which team the players are on.

Discourse Communities:

The two main communities are the teams: Each team plays a different style with a different

formation.

Coaching staffs: Each club has their coaching staff. They try to outwit each other throughout the

game with formations and substitutes.

The fans: the fans are there to cheer their teams on and try to motivate them to win.

Literacy Practices:

Passing: This being a high level teams, ball possession is usually a very important part of their

games. They work the ball around and try to find a point in the defense to attack.

Shooting: Shooting is required for a team to win unless something crazy happens where the ball

just roll into the goal. Shooting is one of the most awesome displays of soccer you will see. They

can use pure power or finesse to beat the keeper and score.

The Observation:

Manchester United vs Chelsea. Manchester United, Man u for short, starts off with the

ball and is passing the ball around trying to keep position and find a way to get a shot on goal.

They finally get their shot but it is saved by Petre Czech. Willian ends up with the ball but he is

dispossessed. Four minutes through man u is controlling the ball much more than Chelsea. Man

u push forward but john terry hits the ball out for a throw-in of the left side of the field. After

the throw the ball is kicked out for a corner, but the corner kick is kicked too far.

6 minutes Chelsea have finally started working the ball around. Man u get the ball and

after passing the ball around the middle of the field Ramieres fouls Ashley Cole. Man u gets a

throw and work it down the right side. Januzaj pass is deflected and Oscar of Chelsea gets the

ball and runs it up the file d, but has is taken away by jones. Jones runs up the field and has the

ball taken away by Hazard. Jones runs into Luiz while going after Hazard and commits a foul.

After some scramble for the ball Chelsea gets possession and works the ball around. It lands in

the feet of Ramieres and he is able to get a shot off but De Gea blocks the shot. Man u breaks

on the counter attack down the left side and Januzaj is fouled. They get a shot off but it is

blocked by a defender. Chelsea goes on a counter attack up the right side and hazard passes to

Willian. Willian shoots but his shot is blocked by a defender.

13 minutes and Chelsea have possession working the ball around the field. They work it

to the right side and Oscar is fouled by Ashley young. Hazard’s free kick is too powerful and

Eto’o is not able the settle it. On the goal kick luiz fight and gains possession, but after a

clearance man u gets possession back. Chelsea take the ball back but Welbeck fouls luiz. They

keep possession on the free kick and work it back to the goalie, Czech. He kicks it up the field

and after ball bounces back in forth between both teams, but Chelsea is finally able to gain

possession. The ball is working to Eto’o on the right side and he makes a beautiful off-ball juke

and makes the defender jump. He dribble slightly closer to the goal, but shoots outside the box

on the right corner of the goalie box with his weak foot and he nets a fantastic goal far post out

of the reach of de Gea. After the restart luiz gets a yellow card for a dangerous tackle when he

hits Danny Welbeck after the ball was passed away. Neither team keeps much possession until

21 minutes in when Chelsea works it around the field and eventually to hazard on the

left wing who dribbles by his defender and crosses the ball in to what would have been a goal

until it took a deflection off the defense. The corner kick is too hard and soars over the players.

Chelsea take another shot it once again it is deflected for a corner. It comes to nothing and de

Gea takes the goal kick. Januzaj ends up with the ball and he is fouled by terry. After the free

kick man u work the ball around but hazard is able to take the ball and Chelsea go on a counter

attack. Chelsea seems to be a much faster team, but Ivanovic messes up the attack with what

was either a bad shot or a bad cross that goes out of bounds. De Gea takes the goal kick and the

work it up the field. Welbeck gets the ball on the right wing and he crosses it in and Ivanovic

barely heads it out of bound for a throw on the left side. Evra gets the ball to Januzaj and he

crosses the ball into the middle along the ground, but luiz clears it easily. Man u work the ball

through Chelsea’s midfield and Evra makes a run on the outside and gets the ball for a wide

open shot, but at a bad angle. It goes out for a goal kick. After some back and forth play Chelsea

finally gets control of the ball and makes their way up the field. Oscar gets the ball and is

indecisive. He ends up shooting and missing on the opposite side of the goal. Man u quickly

moves the ball up field and they get another cross in, but no Chelsea defender is there to clear

it. Unfortunately for man u none of their players were there to score. Chelsea works the ball up

field and Willian gets the ball. He makes a bad pass. He has not played well all game. Hazard

tries to regain possession, but he fouls Valencia in the process. Man u slowly takes the ball up

field, Evra gets it on the left side, but Oscar take it from him and Evra fouls him. Possession

switches back and forth until the

37th minutes where man u finally find a way to get through Chelsea’s defense. The cross

coms in for Welbeck, but he can’t finish. His shot was blocked by Czech.

Man u gains possession in the 40th and they get a cross into the middle but it’s cleared

out to Willian. He dribbles past the defender and passes in the middle to hazard. Hazard takes it

to the right side and cuts back and chips it to Eto’o, and he manages to cross it into Oscar who

almost get a shot on target with and bicycle kick. 44th minute Willian is fouled by Jones. The free

kick is about 25 yds. out. Luiz takes the shot but it is deflected out for a Chelsea corner. Willian

crosses it in but it’s deflected out to Ramieres 30 yrds out. He throw balls to Gary Cahill and he

crosses along the ground to Samuel Eto’o who finishes far post. Chelsea are up 2-0 with Eto’o

scoring both goals just before half time. They have 2 minutes of stoppage time and Chelsea is

taking their time trying to make it to half time without man u responding to their goal.

49 minutes: Samuel Eto’o scores and easy shot of a deflection from de Gea after Gary

Cahill heads the ball towards goal. Next Evra comes off injured and Smalling comes in. Chelsea

keep possession and just work the ball around slowly. Since they are up by three there is no

need to pressure up as much. Man u have to play with more urgency if they want to salvage

something from this game. They give the ball away and Chelsea works it around to Willian on

the right wing where he is fouled by Ashley young. Chelsea take their kick and work it around.

Ramieres gets the ball, but he gives it away.

54 minutes: man u have possession, but Valencia gives the ball away and then he gets a

yellow card for a dangerous tackle. Both teams are working hard to keep the ball. The ball goes

out for a man u goal kick. Chicharito comes in for Ashley young. Chelsea’s defense is trying hard

to keep a clean sheet so they are just booting the ball out if necessary and not caring whether

they keep the ball.

59 minutes: ramieres takes a shot from about 23 yards, but he shoots it way over the

goal. Man U takes their goal kick and start their way up the field. Valencia receives the ball on

the right wing and crosses it in, but it takes a deflection and goes out for a man u throw. Chelsea

move up field and Willian makes a bad pass. The ball bounces back to Chelsea, but they can’t

hold on to it. Man U is remaining very patient and they are trying to find a way through

Chelsea’s hard working defense.

65 minutes: Mikel is getting ready to come on for Chelsea. Neither team is keeping

possession because the ball is being hit out of bounds. Man U finally gain possession and try to

get through Chelsea’s defense, but yet again Chelsea play good defense and stop them. In the

69th minute Mikel replaces Oscar.

69 minutes: Gary Cahill gets pressured and makes a risky pass back to Czech and Czech

has to switch feet to clear the ball with his strong foot, but he gets rushed by Chicharito and he

barely turn in time to keep the ball from being knocked into his own goal. He clears it out and

both teams work for possession.

73 minutes: Chelsea move up field down the left side and Willian crosses into Ramieres

but Vidic clears the ball before it reaches Ramieres. Man u pushes for a counter-attack but it

comes to nothing after they commit a foul.

77 minutes: things seem to be slowing down. Man U have a throw in on the right corner

of Chelsea’s side. After passing the ball around they find a hole. Jones receives the ball and he

makes a perfect pass to Chicharito who slides along the ground and reaches the ball and scores.

Chelsea 3, Manchester United 1. Eto’o comes off and Torres comes on for Chelsea. The game

has livened up a bit after that goal and Manchester want more goals. With a loss, Man U go

further behind the top 4 and have almost no chance of making up the ground in the league

table.

81 minutes: Man U free kick just outside the box. They take it quick and work it around

the box. A cross comes in but Czech is there to catch the ball.

85 minutes: Matic makes his second debut for Chelsea after transferring back from

Benfica. He comes on for Willian. Chelsea is working hard to keep the ball away from

Manchester.

88 minutes: Torres is down with what might be a cramp. He may just be wasting time.

90 minutes: There is 4 minutes of stoppage time. Hazard get the ball a runs up the field.

He makes a cut in where Vidic makes a two-footed slide tackle and twists and bring Hazard to

the ground. He is now suspended for the rest of the match and the next match. Man U now play

with 10 men. Now Chelsea are just taking their time in everything that they do. They just want

the game to end so they can win. Just before the clock expires Rafael slid tackles Cahill with two

feet. He gets a yellow card since it was dangerous but not as bad as Vidic.

The same rules apply and the artifacts remain the same even though the jersey styles differ and the

stadium was different. The location was in Tottenham

Actors:

Lloris is a key player for Tottenham. He is their goalie and he’s one of the best. Aguerro is one of the best

strikers in the world and he is a key part of the offense for Man City. Silva is a midfielder for Man City and

he is an incredible dribbler and passer.

1minute: Tottenham starts off with the ball. Man City quickly take the ball and move down the field, but

Spurs stop them. They fail to attack and man city take the ball up the left side. The ball is moved to the

middle where Fernandinho loses the ball to Eriksen. Man City relentlously take the ball back looking for

an early goal with the pressure they are putting on Tottenham. Man city work down the left side and the

attack stalls and they have to work the ball around to the other side. Aguerro cuts to the middle where

he gets a pass and runs past two defenders and then shoots and hits the cross bar of the goal.

5 minutes: man City keep the pressure up and almost get another Aguerro shot, but Tottenham play

good defense. Tottenham is just playing desperate defense right now. They have not gotten any rhythm

yet. Dzecko receives and beautiful pass across field but passes the ball right back to Tottenham’s

midfield. Man City has the best offense in the league. They are attacking so much. Tottenham finally get

the ball inside of Man City’s box. They lose the ball but regain possession and start working the ball

around. Man City gain the ball back and start making a lot of fancy passes and then Dzecko passes to

Aguerro who passes it back to him and Dzecko takes the ball down the field where he shoots high over

the goal.

12 minutes: Man city has the ball and is patiently waiting to find an opening. Once they see any opening

they attack but fail. They ball is kicked out for a Man City throw. A bad pass leads to a Tottenham

interception and a Man City fouled by Zableta. Man city quickly take the ball back and cut straight up the

middle with a through ball to Aguerro who puts the ball back post out of the goalies reach. That’s his 15th

goal of league competition. Man City quickly rake the ball back from the Spurs and attack, but miss

another shot. They keep attacking so much that they are bound to score more goals.

17 minutes: Spurs get a throw in in a dangerous territory. Rose gets the ball and gets a 1, 2 pass from

Eriksen and crosses the ball in but it’s cleared out by Man City’s defense. Tottenham is trying to get

something going on offense, but Man City is keeping them out. Spurs finally find a break in the defense

and Adebeyor shoots but is deflected out for a corner. Eriksen takes the corner but the goalie comes up

with the ball. Man City is such a fast team. They move straight up the field and get a cross in to Aguerro.

Aguerro heads the ball perfectly towards goal but Hugo Lloris makes an absolute remarkable save. He

reacts with such little time, and dives in the opposite direction of his movement ad cleanly blocks the

ball out.

22 minutes: Man City on the attack again. Aguerro with another shot which just goes over the bar. I

don’t remember another team being able to attack so much so fast. With a win here Man City would go

to the top of the table. They keep attacking trying to seal a win and not give Tottenham any chance to

get up field. Tottenham is keeping possession trying to find something. Rose gets the ball and knocks it

past the defender but falls very easily the ref doesn’t buy the flop and he lets play continue. Man City

gets the ball and goes on the attack. They pass the ball around trying to find a hole in the defense. They

try a chip, but it’s defended well, but Man City get it back and try attacking the other side. Rose kicks it

out. Man City take the throw and gradually works the ball closer and closer until David Silva takes a shot

with no room and gets a corner.

28 minutes: Man City tries another attack but the ball rolls right to Lloris. Man City take the ball back

immediately and go up field and Dzecko takes the ball to the base line where the defender slides and

kicks it out. Man City’s corner comes to nothing. Tottenham get another attack. The cross is in from Rose

but is deflected out for a corner. Man City covers the corner and it’s out of bounds. Tottenham regain

possession and then give it away again.

free kick, but barely kicks it too far. Man City still attacking very quickly. The Spurs are holding on but just

barely. Tottenham gets a break and a throw ball to Adebeyor but Man City’s center backs converge on

him to stop him. Eriksen takes the free kick and makes an amazing cross back post where it’s deflected in

by Dawson who scores. The goal is called off because he was offside.

and move up on the attack. The ball is loose and Adebeyor jumps in to get it and Di Micheles slides in

and shot just wide of the goal.

42 minutes: Tottenham has picked up the pace and trying to score a goal before the half. They get the

ball down, but they keep failing to do anything with it. Aguerro is down with a possible injury. He is

coming off ad Jovetic is coming on. Man City is pushing up and working to score. They are getting

dangerously close to a goal

45 minutes: 3 minutes of stoppage time. Both teams are pushing for a goal. Nothing special happened

and its half time.

45 minutes: City start off with the ball. Silva goes down. His foot got stepped on. Tottenham starts off

pushing up. They need a goal not only for a tie, but to regain some momentum and then maybe win.

They fail on the attack but they are very active in the midfield trying to steal the ball. Man City get a

through ball into Dzecko and Rose slides from being and barley kicks Dzecko before getting the ball and

that results in a penalty for Man City and a red card for rose. Toure takes the penalty and score. 2-0.

51 minutes: Man City have all the momentum being up 2 goals, and they are just playing possession ball.

They just hold the ball and pass it around. Nothing too special until they get a ball into David Silva who

jukes his defender and shoots the ball off the posts and then rebounds off a defender to Dzecko who

scores far post. Man City is running away with this game. Tottenham is down by 3 and playing with 10

men. There seems to be no hope for the Spurs. Some of Tottenham’s players are looking to score, but

most of them look like they’ve given up on winning and just trying to prevent more goals.

56 minutes: Man City still out Possessing Tottenham a lot. Tottenham actually gets an attack together.

Maybe there’s still hope for a goal. They get a corner from a deflection. The corner is taken and it is

unfortunately deflected by Zableta who is falling and it lands right in the path a Capou who scores.

60 Minutes: The Spurs are recharged and again are motivated to try to win this game. Man City is trying

hard to keep their attacks silenced. The crowd is getting louder cheering them on. They keep pushing up

but Man City keep stopping them. Adebeyor fouls Zableta and is getting a little frustrated pushing

Zableta off of him. Man City push up but Dzecko fouls and they lose the ball.

79 minutes: David Silva comes off and Kolarov comes on. Usually a left back but he’s playing left mid.

Man City is just playing possession. There’s no hope for the Spurs. Dzecko gets another shot and this one

shanks worse than all the rest. He has a goal but not one of his best games.

83rd minute: Eriksen comes off and Holtby comes on. Man City is trying to push up more. Whether to

score more or to waste time am not sure.

86 minutes: Man City do push up for another attack and Jovetic trying to score but Lloris saves it and

Kolarov shoots off the rebound and misses. Another attack and another corner from Man City. The

corner is taken and Dzecko shoots off the volley and it’s saved. The ball lands in the feet of Kompany who

57 minutes: Everton has the ball and is trying to do something with it. It gets knocked aroud between

both team until Everton gains possession and is able to attack. Once again it comes to nothing. At this

point the game is over. There is basically no use in the teams playing anymore. Liverpool has total control

over the game. No matter what Everton does it is defended well by Liverpool.

62 minutes: Everton has the ball in Liverpool’s half, but it goes out for a goal kick. Liverpool is not passing

as cleanly as they did in the first half, but they still keep the ball. Everton is trying to do something, but

there is always one bad pass or one bad dribble or a defender blocks their pass. Everything is going bad

for them.

but Minolet makes a save and it goes out for a corner. The corner comes to nothing except a Liverpool

counter-attack. It is three on two. Suarez passes to Sturridge who tries to cut past the defender. He loses

control and has to regain control. He dribbles down the side with the dfender all over him and he shoots

and it misses badly.

left side where they win a throw in. they retain possession but that comes to nothing. Liverpool trying to

score again pushes forward. They lose the bll out of bounds for a goal kick. One good thing about this

their rival. Nothing comes out of the attack.

lot of goals and he was like the play maker I guess. Giggs was very loyal to the team because my dad has

alwazys talked higly of him and he is a play maker. Van Persie is dutch and I am dutch and he is like the

greatest playerin the world.

“Um they can get a new coach cause their current coach is terrible. On the bright side their team is just

behind and they just need a new coach.

“Well, I know more of the players because I watched them longer and theyre in England and I can

understand the commentary better My favorite players are in that league and I like their polayering

style.”
