What does the manual offer?

The PeerThink manual works with the experiences of the participants.

This concept wants to cover the complex reality of young people in a society. Young persons are affected by many social differentiations and they deal with it.

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

What does intersectional peer violence prevention mean?

• Violence has to be seen as based on the structures of dominance

• Therefore violence prevention has to reflect structures of dominance as fundamental basics

• The attitude in which the pedagogical method is grounded is important

• One of the important features is to reflect the inter-connection of individual action and social structures

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

How to use the manual? • It is easy! The manual is mainly build up in

three parts. Actually you can start where you want. – We are in the introdution

• You find the practice mainly in– Method sheets– Self learn modules

• You find the theory mainly in– Self learn modules – Introduction and glossary

• The good practise examples are connected to both

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

How to use it in an intersectional way

• We could not find or develop methods which are intersectional par excellence

• But we define as an intersectional peer violence prevention project: Violence prevention is adressedMore than one social category is touchedThe inter-connection of social categories is

visibleThere is a contribution to the decrease of

power relations by deconstruction

Self-learning tools

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

What are the self-learning tools?

• The self-learning tools consist of texts in the manual / sections on website

• A sort of do-it-yourself training course, concerning the most important topics

• Part of the practical as well as theoretical part of the manual

• Focus on self-reflection of teachers, social workers and facilitators

Aim: to provide...

• Food for thought

Intersectional Mainstreaming

based on the article “Intersectional Mainstreaming” by Elli Scambor & Mart Busche (2009)

www.peerthink.eu

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

Gender Mainstreaming

............. gender as isolated single category

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

Intersectionality

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

Five core Elements of Implementation

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

I. Main Objectives

www.peerthink.eu

„... building a ground for violence prevention with adolescents, which reflects the interconnection of categories like gender, ethnicity, educational background ... systematically.“

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

II. Intersectional Analysis

... institutional/organisational framework

... staff

... participants

... content

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

III. Formulation of Aims

• define intersectional categories

• ... and their interdependency

• decrease of power relation

• framing processes

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

IV. Implementation

.... depends highly on the definition of aims

- organisation wants to

become „intersectional“ ?

- measures want to

become “intersectional” ?

PeerThink Conference 05./06.02.2009

V. Evaluation

............ new aims can be developed ...........
