KERRS REACH WATER QUALITY ‘VERY POOR’FRASER WALKER-PEARCEPopular rowing spot Kerrs Reach and other estuary spots are riddled with disease-causing bacteria due to faecal contamination from birds and stormwater run-off.

A recently-released report by Environment Canterbury, showed water quality was dire in most eastern estuary spots, deemed unsuitable for contact recreation and shellfish gather-ing.

Kerrs Reach received the worst grade of “very poor” alongside the Heathcote River spot on Catherine St.

Caspian St in South Brighton, Sandy Point in Bromley, and Bridge St Bridge, all received fail grades

deemed “poor”.But Spit Tip and Penguin

St in Southshore, where some people gather shellfish, scored “good” and “fair” grades re-spectively.

In spite of this, a blanket warning on consuming any food gathered in the estuary went out just before Christ-mas from Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey.

“No one should swim in, or consume food from, these water-ways,” he said.

Canterbury Rowing Club club captain Michael

Petherick (left) said he was surprised by the report.

He thought the water qual-ity at Kerrs Reach had been improv-ing.

“There defi-nitely haven’t been cases of rowers getting sick all the time while I’ve been around. I wouldn’t go swimming in it, but rowing is a little less harm-ful, because you’re not in the water all the time.”

He said there have been reports coming out for years on the matter, but he hasn’t seen the river deteriorate since the earthquakes.

“I believe there is still more

infrastructure work to be put in, so I wouldn’t think we’ll see it improving in the next few years,” he said.

Dr Humphrey said heavy levels of excrement from ducks and canada geese were the main culprit, with stormwater run-off flushing dog and human excrement into the rivers and estuary, Dr Humphrey said.

The faecal matter contains

disease-causing bacteria, micro-organisms and viruses which can cause stomach up-sets and skin, ear and respira-tory infections.

Avon-Otakaro Network co-chairman Evan Smith said he was not surprised at the state of the rivers near the estuary as Christchurch’s “Victorian” wastewater system was only be-ing restored to pre-quake levels.

Gotta Love New Brighton

Monday February 8, 11am-3pm

Hosted by the New Brighton Project, this home-grown community event was launched in 2011 to prove to the rest of the city that New Brighton was still alive, vibrant and a place people loved. The past four years the event has gained a loyal following of “Brightonites” and people who just love New Brighton.

The event organisers are put-ting out a call to all local Brigh-ton groups who would like to be part of the day to showcase what you do in your community. This is an opportunity for your group or club to run a membership drive and raise your community profile, recruit volunteers, pro-mote special events coming up, do some fundraising or create a game or activity people would enjoy.

FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board members have eaten their way through just under $4000 of ratepayer-funded finger food in the past year.

Figures released to the Pegasus Post under the Official Information Act show that a total of more than $19,000 was spent by the eight community boards from November 2014 to November 2015.

Of the eight commu-nity boards, Burwood-Pegasus had the highest total at $3802.

It was also the highest average spend at $158.45 per meeting.

There are seven members on the board, which mean $22.64 was spent on average per member at meet-ings since November 2014.

Burwood-Pegasus ward councillor Glenn Livingstone (above) said he thought the cost could be further reduced.

But he said the cost was far less than previous terms –

they used to receive catered meals.

He said the board had had a large amount of meetings – especially over the controversial QEII replacement facility.

“So it [the cost] could well be a reflection of our input throughout the year. Our meet-ings tend to go for about four hours, so that’s another factor in it,” he said.

He would talk to board chair-woman Andrea Cummings regarding the issue.

Cr Livingstone said after the

costs had been revealed, he knew community boards were discussing how to use the left-over food.

“Everything that is non-perishable I think we should look into donating. We need to

always be aware of our con-stituency. Because within the Burwood-Pegasus ward there are many different communi-ties, and they are all on a differ-ent part of the socio-economic spectrum,” he said.

WOMAN COLLAPSESA woman in her 80s collapsed outside Eastgate Shopping Centre last Monday evening. St John was alerted to the incident at about 6pm. The woman was taken to Christchurch Hospital with moder-ate injuries.

MAN FOUND DEADA man was found dead in his car in Burwood last Monday afternoon. St John sent a rapid response vehicle to the call-out in Belair Close around 1.30pm. The case has been referred to the police and the coroner.

GIRL HURT IN FIGHTA fight which broke out at The Palms Shopping Centre on Thursday ended with a teenage girl being assessed by St John. An ambulance was sent to the mall just after 5pm, and arrived to find the fight happening in the car park. The girl did not require hospital treatment.

ORRICK CRES DETOURResidents living in Orrick Cres in Aranui will have to take a long de-tour from today due to road works. A new vacuum wastewater system will be put in place along Orrick Cres, meaning that the road will only be open to northbound traffic. Any other traffic will be detoured for 3km around the Avondale Golf Course. The work is expected to finish on January 29.

MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

My first job for 2016 is to wish everyone a happy and safe new year in the hope that some of the work that has been done to reduce fires has had an ef-fect. So far this year and even through the Christmas period this has been the case.

While there have been a few minor incidents involving grass, rubbish bins and fences the holi-day period has been remarkable for the lack of significant fires, or for that matter, other types of incident. So well done Christ-church and long may it last.

As usual however, our in-trepid crews have been involved in a number of animal rescues including ducklings, a cat, a dog down a cliff in Lyttelton, a swan and even a drowned horse in Akaroa Harbour.

This sort of work obviously involves the ‘feel good’ factor of helping and caring for dis-tressed wildlife but there is no better organisation to deal with such situations. We have decent

empathetic people who have great problem-solving skills and a good array of tools at their disposal. They don’t mind using them.

Just after Christmas we had the latest version of a long-time fire danger when the wall of a house in Waltham caught fire from the heat of a paint strip-ping gun. We probably see this about once every couple of years. Generally it seems to involve bird or rodent nest ma-terial inside the wall and can be quite disastrous. Care, a charged hose and an available phone are all recommended.

Flame filesHoliday period free from significant fires

Michael Gorman – Christchurch City Missioner

Many people find Christmas very stressful. Some are reminded of happier times in the past when things were better for them. Many are lonely and isolated. For some stress comes from not being able to provide for their families because of illness, poverty or a lack of ability. It seems reason-able to question if it is worth celebrating Christmas at all.

For those who have faith in the Christmas story, or who have family that they can celebrate with it is well worth the effort. At the City Mis-sion we work hard to enable more people to enjoy this time of year and to have a happy Christmas without getting into debt or feeling bad because they cannot enjoy the festive season the way most of us do.

Recently there has been discussion about not just about

how we should celebrate Christmas but should we cel-ebrate Christmas at all. Some say that doing so discriminates against those who do not share our belief and that it is offen-sive. They suggest that we no longer say Merry Christmas and we should just wish each other a happy holiday. I trea-sure Christmas and the wonder-ful story of God becoming one of us. I think this is well worth celebrating.

This year I was invited to celebrate a Buddhist festival and I felt very privileged to be included. When I celebrate Christmas I too want to honour people of other beliefs or of

no belief. I want to share with them something that I hold special. I’m not asking them to believe what I believe but I want to share something that is important to me. I want them to celebrate with me, spend time with me, eat food with me and know me. Christmas is a part of my belief system and a part of my culture. I do not deny others their celebrations, culture and festivals and I am honoured if they include me in them. I do believe in the power of words and I know that they have the power to offend but when I say Merry Christmas this is a gift, an invitation to understand my belief. How can that be offensive?

Have your sayLooking back at Christmas last year, is it worth still celebrating? Does it drive more people into despair because of stress? Is it better to say “happy holidays” or are people being too PC? Email [email protected] with your thoughts.

Is Christmas still worth celebrating?

FRASER WALKER-PEARCEAfter being nearly destroyed by the fire, Southshore resident Bon Suter’s sculpture garden has received an online helping hand.

A Facebook page has been set up to help revitalise the popu-lar sculpture garden after a fire tore through the sand dunes last month.

Ms Suter said she was still “devastated” looking out the

window and seeing the destroyed garden.

Native plants like harakeke (flax), cabbage trees and toi toi trees have been

asked for to help the garden be “reborn”.

Ms Suter doesn’t know for sure who set up the Facebook page, but she has a sneaking suspicion that it may be a New Brighton resident.

The ultimate donation would be for someone to drop in some

native cabbage trees, Ms Suter’s favourites.

The sculpture garden is cur-rently leased by the council to Ms Suter to teach art to people with disabilities.

Ms Suter said: “I’ve been frantically replanting flax bushes that I had leftover from the fires. But I’ve also had people give their donations since the fire, which is just so kind.”

Art classes for the disabled

will resume as normal from this week, which Ms Suter is look-ing forward to.

“They’re very cool people to be around. I enjoy them and they get a great kick out of it and make some really amazing art,” she said.

If you can help the rebirth of the sculpture garden, the page can be found by searching: Sculpture Garden Replanting, on Facebook.

EMMA-JANE MCLENNANA North New Brighton teenager who suffers from a rare growth disorder says she is thankful for a fundraising campaign through The Star to give her more inde-pendence.

Almost $30,000 was raised for 14-year-old Lily Exton, so she could buy a new vehicle large enough for the hoist needed for her power wheelchair.

Lily’s health issues mean she is 1.84m tall, her joints are too stiff to walk far and she is partially deaf.

Without the van she was main-ly confined to being pushed in her manual wheelchair, she says it’s wonderful to be able to move

around on her own now: “I feel like a normal teenager, independ-ent.”

Her family was able to buy the van in July, but Lily fell ill with pneumonia soon after and spent almost a whole school term inside.

Now that she’s better she can enjoy trips with her family around the South Island, a “huge blessing” mother Wendy Exton said.

“Really it’s meant the world to us. It’s so good to see Lil-ian independent, it’s been good for the whole family, and we couldn’t possibly thank everyone enough.”

GRATEFUL: Wendy and Lily Exton with the new vehicle which is giving Lily more independence.

our PEOPLE > Do you know someone who should be our next Our People? Nominate them now by emailing [email protected]

Hocus-pocus: Jazz musicianKate Taylor

You are just beginning your re-hearsals now and it is only three weeks until the show. What is the schedule like for the next few weeks?

It is a pretty short rehearsal period. One of the shortest for a show this big. We are going full with the theatre and we have a whole lot going on the stage. We started yesterday and the team is great.

What made you decide Badjelly would be a role you would like to play? Would this be one of the most interesting roles you have committed to?

I have never done a kids show. Badjelly is like a legend – Spike Milligan. Our director wants us to keep the essence of the characters. We are going to make Badjelly quirky as well. My costume is probably not what you would ex-pect. But I won’t ruin the surprise.

Did you grow up knowing the story of Badjelly the Witch well?

Yes, I heard it as a young kid. I was quite a scardey-cat kid so my parents didn’t play it to me

for a while. What is your favourite line from

the show and why?Definitely I would have to say

“stinky-poo”. I have to say that multiple times and I think that’s the one kids will enjoy the most as well.

The book is quite short, will there be any twists or anything different audiences can look forward to?

It keeps the essence of the story. Obviously Badjelly trying to find little boys and girls to make into yummy soup. The show is a musical and everyone has got a song. This was so each character can have its own story within the story.

For an example we want you to see what Mudwiggle the Worm would be like if he had his own story. It should be more than just Badjelly trying to steal kids. We will jam a whole lot of fun into 55min as well as keep in sync with the original story. Hamish Oliver has done arrangements of music and Geoff Davidson has written the music for us. We have adapted the words to our own original music. I love the music.

What are your performance goals for 2016?

This first half of the year is busy. I am in another production with Magni-tude Productions – Rock of Ages. It is the New Zealand premier of the show so that is super exciting. We have the most amazing cast. Without sounding

cliche it is going to be a hilariously “rocking” show. It is just 80s mad-ness. I am playing the role of Justice who is a powerful woman. She is the madam of the “strip club”. Bit differ-ent from Badjelly. It is the whole girl falls in love with the boy. So I have those rehearsals on as well. I am go-ing from Badjelly in the day to Rock of Ages rehearsals in the night. It is quite full on.

When you do have any spare time, what do you enjoy doing most?

I enjoy just hanging out with my friends to be honest. Being in the music circle my friends are often per-forming a lot. On a Sunday afternoon I often just like going to the Brewery and listening to my friends sing. I enjoy the sunshine while I am not in the theatre.

What made you decide music was the career for you?

I actually did classical and opera through Burnside High School. My grandad is Doug Kelly and he is quite a well-known jazz band arranger. He is 93 and still here going strong. Inti tally in high school I did a lot of classical training but when I got accepted into CPIT [Christchurch Polytechnic In-stitue of Technology] jazz school and my voice just found its place singing jazz. I progressed into teaching.

Was your family ever interested in music?

Children better watch out because Badjelly the Witch is coming to town later this month. Georgia O’Connor-Harding speaks to Kate Taylor about her role as the wicked witch as well as her next role as the madam of a ‘’strip club”, her well-known grandfather, and the time she sang with Stevie Wonder

turns into Badjelly the WitchMy love for music has defi-

nitely come from my grandad. Pretty much everyone in my family can play an instrument – I am just the one that does it as a job.

In December the Garden City Big Band put on a tribute for my grandad and Doug Caldwell who is a jazz pianist in his late 80s. They both used to run the Radio City Band. It was pretty much a sell-out. It shows the respect not only from the jazz community but the music com-munity. I also did a surprise trib-ute for my grandad in 2010 as part of a jazz and music festival. He was quite taken back.

Do you think the jazz scene is big in Christchurch?

It has a good following. The jazz festival has a great uplifting factor in it. We get to highlight local musicians as well as see the international ones. Even with the earthquakes there are still some great venues host-ing cool gigs. There are always opportunities for jazz musicians here to have a working life.

Yes, because I wanted to ask you this. Do you think it is possible for a performer to have a full-time career in the city?

You definitely can. You have

to work hard obviously and keep grasping at everything you can. You might have to go up to Wellington or elsewhere. If you have the hunger for it, you should be able to find it. It may not be your first choice but it may lead you to what could be your first choice. I am lucky to do it as a full-time job because I am teaching as well but a lot of people do have full-time jobs.

You released a jazzy CD of a range of popular songs in 2013 and I hear you have an album coming out this year. Will it be original songs?

Basically I am calling it the 12 pianist project. I am planning on using a different pianist ev-ery month. I planned on finding as many pianists in Christchurch and doing a different track with them. Christchurch does have some of the most amazing jazz pianists. I am hoping to have that done by early 2017.

What are your songs about?I write songs about what

inspires me from my own life and about my relationships with people. That doesn’t necessarily mean a sappy love-song. I may write in personal jokes from friends. I feel like it is a success if I have connected with some-one.

You have done a lot from reading your performance CV, what is the most significant performance you have done?

It was definitely the 2010 trib-ute for my grandad but I have to do a bit of name-dropping. We used to sing backing vocals for L.A Mitchell – she is a singer song-writer renowned in New Zealand. She worked with musi-cians such as Dave Dobbyn, but we were lucky enough to open for Stevie Wonder. We got to meet Stevie and I have no words to describe that.

You have had a few high-lights in you career. Did you grow up in Christchurch?

Yes, I was born and bred in Christchurch. I went to Cots-well Primary School, Cobham Intermediate and Burnside High School.

Now it is the first time in my life I feel like I have established myself. I want to help keep the jazz music alive in Christchurch. I am feeling satisfied with where I am now. Never know I may have a child one day.

Are you married and all that?

Just single, indepen-dent woman. I feel like

because of that I have been able to do a lot more. But because I have established myself I feel like that is the step over the next 10 years.

How was studying at NIDA in Sydney? What drew you into the place?

It was amazingly terrifying. The school has the reputation for one of the best schools in Australasia. I went there when I was about 26 and basically it broke me down to bring me back up.

You had to bare

yourself so you could grow as an artist. They taught you to draw yourself up to your character from your own experiences in your life. I worked with a director called Tyran Parke and he changed my whole perspective. He brought out the qualities I had to make a great character. When I am teaching my students I am now always thinking about how I am going to bring the best out of them.

lovebite dentures will boost your confidence and make you look years younger!

[Edition datE]2

At his Montreal Street studio Lovebite, internationally renowned dental technician Richard Greenlees creates beautiful bespoke dentures with small

nuances in the fabrication, colour and shape and even slight imperfections to create a uniquely individual smile.

There is no need for dentures to look false. Richard takes a great deal of satisfaction in making bespoke dentures that look one hundred percent real and natural, personally guiding his patients through the transformation process, to craft a smile that reflects their individuality and personality, and recreates their natural pre-denture smile.

Not only do Lovebite teeth look real, the whole structure and shape of the patient’s face is transformed with Richard’s top-of-the-line dentures – something he calls his signature ‘denture lift’. “With appropriate facial support, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, the lips are reformed, and beauty is restored,” he says. It is the interior architecture of a Lovebite denture that helps to create a more youthful appearance by recovering the face and skeletal shape that can be lost after years of wearing dentures.

As the smile is transformed, so is the patient’s confidence, and the way they feel about themselves.

Richard’s vast experience includes 15 years running his own clinic in the prestigious Harley Street, London, where he treated people from all walks of life, from barrow boys to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians.

His techniques are recognised as world-leading amongst his international peers and he is regularly asked to lecture and run courses worldwide.

Miles Cone (DMD, MS, FACP, CDT), a prosthodontist from Oregon, USA, said in November 2015: “Richard Greenlees’ craftsmanship is as stunning as it is unique. There is liberation in the calculated imperfection, indeed an asperity that reflects a purely human element”.

In addition to dentures, Richard also carries out crown and bridge, veneer and implant work, in conjunction with like-minded dental surgeons who complement his creative and aesthetic work.

“Teeth are as different as fingerprints and vary greatly depending on a person’s age, sex and race. Dentures from Lovebite reflect this, and are as unique and individual as the people they are made for,” says Richard.

There is nothing more satisfying for Richard, than to see his patients leave the Lovebite studio with their self-confidence and identity restored, as well as their smile.

RECLAIM YOUR IDENTITYWhen it comes to dentures, Christchurch people have access to world leading techniques and oral aesthetics right on their doorstep.

Heart burn, Indigestion, Feeling tired often, Low energy, Gas, Bloating, Irregular bowels, Constipation or diarrhoea,

Abdominal cramps, Frequent urination, Thrush, Oral thrush (white coated tongue), Sore throat, Fungal skin infections and rashes, Jock itch, Ring worm, Vaginal or anal itching, Athletes foot, Ear ache, Dry mouth, Bad breath, Anxiety, Feeling down, Depression, Panic attacks, Irritability, Dizziness, Brain fog, Poor concentration, Feeling spacey, Poor memory, Dandruff, Dry itchy skin, Psoriasis, Burning or tearing eyes, Eye fatigue, Headaches, Sinusitis, Nasal drip, Allergies, Rheumatoid arthritis, Urinary tract infections, Often unwell, Chronic disease are just some of the common symptoms.

A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. It is estimated around 70% of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin.

It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is normally kept under control by the good gut bacteria or

probiotics that feed on this yeast. However using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid, and medications are some of the common factors that can upset this delicate balance and allow the candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall over time causing inflammation and leaky gut syndrome where toxins and only partly digested proteins can enter the bloodstream often leading to food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma. The immune system becomes weak and colds, influenza and chronic infections occur often. The candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. In the bloodstream it travels around the body to places where the environment is suitable for it to inhabit. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic micro-organism or virus that’s form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in Cancer and other chronic health conditions. However it is the bodies weakened immune system and

toxic environment that is the real cause of disease.

Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. To cleanse candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months. However when this is achieved a great burden will have

been removed from your body resulting in more optimal health. The Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy can provide you with a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the excess candida and it’s fungus from the body and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Paulger Courts is a family-owned and oriented village. Owners Robyn and Peter MacDonald truly appreciate the value

and importance of independence and ongoing community relationships to their residents, while remaining a close-knit and supportive community. Our residents maintain their community attachments, hobbies and independence, while knowing that support is there if they need it.

The village’s 34 semi-detached but private units sit in landscaped grounds alongside George Manning House, the purpose-built 80-bed rest home and hospital. On hand at GMH, Robyn and her team are available to answer any questions or organise any

assistance the residents need. Paulger Courts units are designed to

be comfortable and easy to live in, while relieving the residents of the burden of home maintenance or reliance on family for urgent assistance. With the supplied ‘Never Alone’ alarm, the nightly security patrol and willing staff, residents and their families can feel reassured that help is at hand, should it be required.

The emphasis at Paulger Courts is on ensuring that it always remains a happy place for people to live in, making the move to a retirement village as easy a transition as possible.

In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. Television progrmame Dr Oz has said it is the most effective and

fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.

Even without exercise and diet changes, many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet.

The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of stroke and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other

(although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.

To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA, and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Campus Principal Gary Taylor said, “Having operated out of an earthquake-damaged building in Manchester St for some time

now, we are delighted to have found the perfect building and location.”

The new building, on the south side of Hagley Park, was recently vacated by Deloittes, and will be fully furnished and equipped by the time of the first courses starting on the second of February.

“Education is the key to getting a good job now,” says Taylor, “and we can boast outstanding outcomes from our programmes. By way of example, 88 per cent of our web development and software engineering graduates from our four nation-wide campuses get great jobs in their respective fields.”

Vision College is also well known for its counselling degree, as well as the highly successful Early Childhood teaching programmes, among others.

Taylor says, “I know one of the key features that attracts students to us is the

smaller class sizes and personal level of tuition. We are very much a tutor-lead provider with a lot of one-on-one tuition given. There are a lot of students that like that environment ahead of large lecture theatre style.”

A separately branded component of the operation is Trainme, which will also relocate to the new building.

Trainme offers free foundation level programmes to those aged 16 to 19. The two courses on offer for a February start are the well named the #Ultimate Career Taster and Security forces training.

The #Ultimate is designed for those who don’t want to go back to school and would like to get credits towards NCEA and experience a range of career options, including getting their driver’s licence. The Security course is very popular with those wanting a career in uniform such as the military, police or security industry, being a very physically challenging course.

Grand and gracious, and located in the highly sought after Fisher Avenue. This has been a treasured home for my clients and their

family, but it is now time to pass the ownership of such a beautiful home to a new owner.

There are two spacious bathrooms and a large modern kitchen, with open plan dining room leading into a formal lounge.

My clients have had the EQC work completed, and there is still scope for you to add your touch to this home. A lovely big backyard will be ideal for the children to play in, and there is room to park a caravan or boat as well.

This is truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the original homes in Fisher Ave, so don’t hesitate to call now.
