Linda Ross—“I want my subconscious to kick in.”

This month’s featured artist is ceramicist and mixed-media artist Linda Ross, who was born in McAllen, Texas, but says she spent her early years living “all over.”

Recalls Linda, “My mom and dad met in New Mexico, but after seeing dad’s family’s Philadelphia lifestyle, Mom opted to have us live in other places, lots of other places. And, when I was young, I also would get serious nosebleeds, so I spent a great deal of quiet time indoors drawing and making stuff.

“The family also had photo books which contained lots of nudes, so, while other kids were drawing stick figures in school, I was drawing nudes. School officials were not pleased, so my parents were called in to explain.”

After graduating from high school in Sacramento, Linda briefly attended college, but then opted for trade school, reasoning that the money was in technical stuff, not art, though she continued doing art in her free time. Following her technical training, Linda worked for several years as a tech support specialist, then in sales, “Where the real money was.” Her creative urges may have been suppressed but were not gone. She continued to make things—furniture, boxes, sculpture, and paintings.

In fact, Linda’s creativity also started erupting in a kitchen-bath design sideline that developed while Linda and Barry bought and sold houses that they briefly occupied, a sideline that evolved into a business, as well as some art commissions for her.

But Linda did not really like doing commissioned work or have to conform to someone else’s definition of art, which is why she early on eschewed a formal art education. “I didn’t want anyone telling me how to do my art,” she explains.

Today, Linda mostly works in ceramics and mixed-media abstract painting. “I find it more interesting, because a painting of a beautiful ocean scene can never capture the real thing. I think the best art is art that makes you feel something.”

Linda’s art also tends to be spontaneous. Or, as she explains, “I don’t like to over plan. I just like to start working on it, because I want my subconscious to kick in.”

President’s Message- Too many new members to welcome individually this month so, welcome to you all and you know who you are. Please take this opportunity to make new art friends, use our facility, and attend our events.

Thanks to all who made our 2nd Saturday Art Walk and reception for the Azalea Festival Art Show winners, a resounding success. Sharon Guinn and Pete Chasar informed and entertained us royally. A good time was had by all.

A special thanks to De’De’ Nicolls and her large crew, “well done”, for giving us our yearly art show, very, very nice. Also, thanks to the judges who took the time and effort to make the selections.

It is time to sign up for tasks at our FASP event. The sign-up table will be in the classroom by the time you read this. PLEASE, help out. This is a new crew this year and they need our support!

All seems to be going well to me but as always, if you have something to say I want to hear it. Your board of directors are open to any input from the membership, but you have to speak for us to hear you.

Good health and happiness to all.

GALLERY NEWS by Sharon Guy

‘Joseph Campbell in The Power of Myth, a 1988 interview with Bill Moyers, links the image of the Earth or Mother Goddess to symbols of fertility and reproduction. For example, Campbell states that, “There have been systems of religion where the mother is the prime parent, the source... We talk of Mother Earth. And in Egypt you have the Mother Heavens, the Goddess Nut, who is represented as the whole heavenly sphere”. Campbell continues by stating that the correlation between fertility and the Goddess found its roots in agriculture’.

Linda Ross will bring the female image to the Manley Gallery in her show July 2nd thru July 27th. Although the ‘ideal’ woman’s body shape has changed throughout 23,000 years of history, in all cultures around the world, the mystery of the female form continues to be a catalyst for study by all genders. Linda Ross strives to capture the idealized form and touches on her experiences traveling in the world of women. This will be a stunning show.

Congratulations again to the winners of the Azalea Festival of Art Show. Their diverse and well executed artwork was enjoyed by a full house at Art Walk. Sharon Guinn gave an emotional telling of her tribute to her mother in her piece titled ‘Family’ chosen BEST OF SHOW. Thank you to Peggy Patton and Heike Domel for volunteering to be Gallery Hosts for Art Walk. Their smiles greeted our visitors and made them feel at home.

‘Forgeries for Sale’ is quickly coming to the Manley starting July 30th. I have had several photos submitted of their forgeries to be used for promotional material. If you have finished and photographed your submission, I could use more photos for distribution to media [email protected]. This work will be on display during FASP, so finish up and bring your forgery to Changeout on July 29th, 10-noon.

It never surprises us the talent we see at the Azalea Festival Art Show! Congrats to All!

ABOUT THE GARDENOne morning a month wasn’t enough time to work in the garden and expect to make a difference. So now the work day is MONDAY. Every MONDAY. I’m usually at Manley by 9:00, to bring out the tools, etc. so we can get to work by 9:30.

Usually we are out of the garden around by noon, and putting equipment away. Our core group is pretty small, three or five. We would welcome a few helpers each Monday.

There is a lot of ongoing maintenance, and spreading bark mulch. Nothing is very difficult. The hard part for me is learning names of the flora (and dare I say shooing the “fauna” away).

All in all it’s a good couple of hours working together to get to know each other and to improve the landscape. Bring your gloves and favorite tools and join us, any Monday!

Reach me at the Manley at 541-469-1807 and leave a message and I’ll get back to you. Barbara Jervis, Garden Coordinator

The garden is our showcase for the Festival of Art in Stout Park. The City is not

responsible for the care of this tiny, but impactful, plot of real estate.

Please help us put our best foot forward.

Stout Park-Where the Fairies Live!

I have heard there are magical fairies that live in Stout Park. Each year they appear and set up the tables, flags, stage and signage for the Festival of Art in Stout Park!

I have been looking for these fairies and I have found a few. They have helped me get the vendors lined up, updated our website and laid out the map. But, I understand there are more out there in the park. Maybe they are just shy, new to PBAA or perhaps they are just napping- catching the last few winks before they appear!

I have to say that I am looking forward to seeing them very soon. We are fast approaching the Festival of Art and soon there will be 70 vendors lined up to sell their goodies! So, please stop by the Manley Art Center and sign-up to help or email me at [email protected].

Oh, did I mention what the most important reason to help is? This is PBAA’s open house! Leslie Wilkinson, FASP Coordinator
