assisted tilting engine enclosure. This enclosure hinges on the bottom and makes engine access and maintenance very easy. To access the engine on the Allianz, one has to raise the hopper or crawl through the radiator compartment. Because access to the engine requires raising the hopper, Allianz provides an electric emergency pump in case the engine cannot be started. This also means that all engine work is performed underneath the raised hopper.

Cooling system - 20 qts. (19 l) Cooling system - 40 qts. The 3000/MX450 and 450 cooling system is likely oversize due to the tendency of dirt to get between the radiator and oil cooler that reduces the efficiency of the radiator.

Engine Pelican Engine 3000/MX450 The FactsRadiator - The radiator and oil cooler are iso mounted side be side In a fixed position next to the engine at the rear of the sweeper.

Radiator and oil cooler are mounted in the rear of the sweeper in-line with the radiator toward the engine and the oil cooler toward the rear.

This is an extremely important point. The 3000/MX450's radiator and oil cooler must swing out to be cleaned as they are in a position at the rear of the sweeper that allows debris to fall on them when dumping unless unit has the optional high side dump. A 3000/MX450 bid spec will call for a swing out cleanable radiator and oil cooler. This is not necessary for a Pelican, as the radiator is nowhere near the hopper. The 3000/MX450 fan pushes air away from the engine to prevent debris from being sucked into the radiator and cooler. What debris gets around the deflector plate that is installed to protect the radiator is blown into the radiator,

eventually wearing through it.

The Facts

Wheel base - 127.4 in. (3236 mm) Wheelbase - probably 116" Allianz is very vague about this number.

There is only a small difference in wheelbase between the two sweepers. This is not reflected in the turning radius of both machines.

Overall length - 16 ft (4877 mm) Overall length - 15 ft 8 in. (4802 mm) advertised. Actual measured is 18 ft

Apparently Allianz does not count the front and rear bumper as part of the overall length.

Height with cab - 9 ft 7 in. (2921 mm)

Height with cab – 8’ ft 10 in. (2692 mm)

There is a 9-inch (228 mm) height difference in the two machines. The Pelican has a much roomier cab that is more accessible, offers better visibility and is more comfortable for taller operators. For more details see the “cab” section in this comparison.

Width outside tires - 8 ft 6 in. (2591 mm)

Width outside tires – 8 ft 0 in. (2438 mm)

There is a 6 inch (152 mm) difference in the width of the machine. In the Pelican this is another reflection of a much wider cab that is accessible and provides superior visibility of the brooms and curb.

Turning radius - 15 ft (4572 mm) Turning radius – 14 ft (4267 mm)Also reported at 12.5’Also reported at 10’

While the Allianz does have a tighter turning radius, it’s very important to understand that because the turning (guide) wheel is so far from the main broom, the operator has no way to steer the main broom like the Pelican’s rear guide wheel does. The Allianz main broom will simply track with the fixed rear tires. This means that the Allianz can never sweep as tight as the Pelicans. Attempting to get the 450 main broom to tight spots causes curb climbing.

Sweeping path one side broom - 8 ft (2438 mm), two side brooms - 10 ft (3048 mm)

Sweeping path one side broom - 7 ft 7 in. (2324 mm), two side brooms – 10 ft 5in (3175 mm) advertised.Full sweep path was measured at an actual 10ft 3in.

The sweeping path with two side brooms on the Allianz is slightly larger (3 in.) than the Pelican. However, on a single side broom unit the sweeping path of the Pelican is 6 inches (152 mm) larger than the Allianz. Even though the Allianz side broom is 13 inches larger in diameter, the Pelican has a better balance between the size of the main broom and the sizes of its side brooms. A single side broom Pelican offers 6 inches more sweep path than the 3000/MX450. (E.G. 1 mile of sweeping * 6 inches) This will add-up during the lifetime of the sweeper.

Weight one side broom - 13,590 Weight , two side brooms - 14,360 The Pelican is 100 lbs. (32 kg) lighter than the 3000/MX450. With its

lbs. (6527 kg) giant, but, inefficient, hopper, one might wonder why the weights of these two sweepers are so close. The explanation is that the 3000/MX450 is built like a small commercial chassis as opposed to the heavy welded box channel construction utilized on the Pelican. It should be noted that the Pelican is constructed more like a piece of construction equipment than an on-highway truck.

The Facts

Speed - up to 20 mph (32 km/h)Infinitely variable

Speed - up to 25 mph (39 km/h)Two speed

Allianz used to advertise 23 MPH for the 3000/MX450. Then they claimed 22 MPH apparently feeling that that a top speed of over 22 MPH would make the sweeper an on highway vehicle and would require additional safety features. Now the claim is 25 MPH. Apparently the speed is no longer a concern for them. On the 3000/MX450, the driver has to choose high or low speed by changing a switch on the control panel. This can create dangerous situations when the operator has the speed switch in the wrong mode. See further under the section hydraulics. The Pelican is completely infinitely variable.

Parking Brakes - Spring applied hydraulically released.

The 3000/MX450 utilizes a spring canister that applies the brakes whenever there is no hydraulic pressure to the canister. Once the brake is set, hydraulic pressure is required to remove it. If the engine will not run and the unit must be moved, the parking brake must be disassembled in order to move the sweeper. If hydraulic pressure to the canister is lost, the brakes will apply and the operator cannot stop the brake application. The canister is not repairable and must be

Frame type – the Pelican utilizes a welded box channel steel frame and integral chassis. As stated before, the Pelican is constructed more like a piece of earthmoving equipment than a truck.

Frame type - the 3000/MX450 is constructed using frame rails like a truck chassis.

The unitized frame and chassis on the Pelican virtually eliminates flex and the possibility of frame failure. The 3000/MX450 uses frame rails like a commercial truck. These rails can flex and could eventually cause component wear and unstable sweeping.

The windshield wiper on the 3000/MX450 is a single, center mounted arm. The small narrow cab on the 3000/MX450 only has room for one wiper arm.

Mirrors – interior + exterior Mirrors – exterior only The interior mirror on the Pelican is 16” (412 mm) x 4.5” (111 mm) for extra wide rear view of the sweeper. Two exterior west coast mirrors with convex inserts mounted on heavy-duty limb resistant brackets further enhance vision. Two 10 in. (254 mm) oval mirrors provide vision in front of the machine. The 3000/MX450 has no interior mirrors as there is no rear window. The 3000/MX450 has no mirror provision to see in front of the sweeper. The outside mirrors are similar between the two models.

Length - 66 in. (1676 mm) Length – 58 in. (1473 mm) There is an 8” (203 mm) difference in the width of the main broom. Allianz offers 58” because that is the exact width of their squeegee system. Elgin offers 66” on the main broom offering 5 more inches of sweep path on a single side broom unit. Per swept mile this means a larger swept area. This is also the reason that the Allianz side brooms are considerably larger in diameter. Otherwise they will not be able to reach the 10 feet sweep path the Pelican offers.

Diameter - 36 in. (914 mm) Diameter - 47 in. (1194 mm). The Allianz needs to use larger side brooms as they use a main broom that is narrower. Side brooms are a significant operating cost item. These brushes will increase the operating cost by a large percentage. The wider Pelican mainbroom will also remove more fines as main brooms are more efficient on fines.

Disc construction - steel plate Disc construction - steel plate Steel plate is used to protect the segments when hitting the curb.Drive - hydraulic, protected by relief valve. Or direct drive through a gearbox and chain and sprocket protected by a clutch

Drive – hydraulic, protected by relief valve.

Only the Pelican offers the direct drive side brooms available on the S model. Direct drive brooms allow a significant amount of the engine horsepower to be transmitted to the side brooms.

Mounting - free floating push arm Mounting - free floating push arm The Allianz utilizes push arms that slide up and down a guide rod. This arrangement is not a stable as the parallelogram links utilized on the Pelican. Tests with the Allianz indicate excessive broom bounce that is the result of the arm and accumulator system used to float the side brooms.

Pressure - hydraulic, in cab with multiple pressure settings and automatic wear control.

Pressure – Hydraulic accumulator, in cab

Like the main broom the Pelican has hydraulic cylinders with pin position setting to adjust the down pressure on the side broom. This system is simple and has been proven over time. Allianz uses hydraulic accumulators to control down pressure on the brooms. As mentioned above, our tests indicate that this system is unstable.

Side broom tilt was not available on the Allianz until recently due to the design of the side broom arm. The arm is adjustable; however, the maximum adjustment is just a few degrees. The new in-cab system is called "roto-tilt"

Conveyor Pelican Conveyor 3000/MX450

The Facts

Type - multiple ply reinforced, cleated rubber belt with “chevron” shaped cleats to help move debris to the center.

Type – 7 aluminum flights with rubber squeegees driven by cog belts.

The Pelican has proven its conveyor belt and it is clear that it loads best under all load conditions, sweeping sand, millings, leaves etc. The Allianz system has all the problems handling bulky debris problems normally associated with squeegee systems. The 3000/MX450 has a greater challenge than most squeegee systems as the conveyer runs away from the hopper, meaning that the debris must change directions and be thrown backwards into the hopper. This prevents the hopper from filling completely. Large debris can also damage the aluminum flights on the Allianz.

The Facts

Speed - cab controlled forward/reverse, engine rpm dependent

Speed – cab controlled forward/reverse, engine rpm dependent

The overall speed of a conveyor is higher than of a squeegee system. That is why the conveyor system loads much better, since per revolution of the belt more material can be loaded. The hopper fill is also more efficient on the Pelican with better throw to the front of the hopper.

Flexibility - 9 in. Oscillation for large object passage. The cleated belt actually helps pull material under the conveyer.

Flexibility - The amount of travel is not known but the elevator is on pivots that allow it to swing about the pivot for object passage.

The Allianz only pivots as opposed to true oscillation (back and up) as the Pelican does. This means that the Allianz cannot pass objects as large as the Pelican.

2.1 yd3 (1.6 m3) in loading tests. This is one of the most important facts concerning the Allianz 3000/MX450.The hopper is significantly larger than the Pelican; however, due to the reverse mounted elevator and shape of the hopper, in our tests it would only hold just over 2 cubic yards. The same exact test was run with a Pelican using the same sweeping course and material. The Pelican collected 3.2 cubic yards of material. If Allianz challenges this fact, urge them to perform the test for your customer. We loaded the hopper the best we could. We are confident that Allianz can not get any more into it than we did.

-Hopper Pelican Hopper 3000/MX450 The FactsMaximum dump height - 9 ft 6 in. (2895 mm)

Maximum dump height - 8 ft 11 in. (2870 mm)

The Allianz measures just less than 9 feet at the hopper lip. Allianz advertises a 9'6" dump height. The hopper door can clear a higher container by allowing the hopper lip to pivot over the container side. The danger with this method is that the hopper door push rod or tail lamps may hit the container and be damaged.

Variable height dump Fixed dump height at just under 9’ The Pelican can dump at any height from the ground to 9’6” in the air. This is extremely necessary when ground dumping dry dusty or light debris.

-Hopper Pelican Hopper 3000/MX450 The FactsLift capacity - 9000 lbs. (4080 kg) Lift capacity - 12,000lbs. (5454 kg) The lift capacity of the Allianz is higher than the Pelican. However the

lift capacity is really a mute point as the hopper can never be loaded with enough material to require 12,000 lbs. of lift.

Frontal dumping – standard Rear dumping – standard High dumping the Allianz is pretty much a game of blind man's bluff. The hopper completely blocks any view of the rear of the sweeper. To dump into a container, the operator must back up until the sweeper hits the truck or container. The other choice is to have an assistant guide the operator to the dump receptacle (see previous pictures). An added side benefit to the front dumping configuration on the Pelican is the ability to roll out the hopper while sweeping to examine the hopper load.

Bumper - rubber bumper Bumper – rubber bumper pads in rear.

The Pelican uses rubber bumper pads that are mounted on the fenders to protect the front-end when dumping. It also prevents the sweeper

The problem with overstating your capabilities is that someday someone might ask you to show them. Here the MX450 can’t quite dump into a 9’6” dump truckNote requirement of spotter to help guide truck

The Pelican really does dump at 9’6” so dumping here was not problem.

from sliding “under” the truck when dumping. On the Allianz, the rubber bumpers are on the rear of the sweeper as the sweeper only dumps to the rear. The rubber pads on the Allianz are extremely important as they must strike the receptacle in order for the debris to flow into the receptacle

The Facts

Propel Pump – variable displacement

Propel Pump - variable displacement

The Allianz utilizes an Eaton propel pump.

Propel Motor - variable displacement

Propel Motor - variable displacement

The Eaton propel motor on the Allianz requires manual input to shift between low and high range. As mentioned in the cab controls section of this analysis, the Pelican propel motors shift automatically based on load making the propel system infinitely variable with no operator speed selection required.

Wheel drives - hydrostatic drive with planetary torque hub.

Wheel motor – hydrostatic drive with planetary torque hub.

The planetary hubs on the Pelican and the Allianz are from the same manufacturer. The gear reduction ratio is slightly different due the different motor speeds.

Fittings - ‘O’ ring face seal type Fittings - 37 degree JIC connectors. ‘O’ ring face seals offer leak free operation and superior quality which is what we use on all Elgin products. The JIC connectors on the Allianz tend to leak and which is why Elgin got away from them.

Reservoir capacity - 28 gal. (106 l) Reservoir capacity - Two 18 gal. Separate tanks.

The Allianz utilizes separate tanks for the propel and sweep system. The additional tank capacity is required to fill the large, long stroke hopper lift cylinders. See also facts about hopper lift capacity.

Indicator - filter restriction indicators are both in cab

Indicator - no filter restriction indicators in cab

There is no hydraulic filter restriction indicator in the 3000/MX450 cab. Their indicator is on the filter in the engine compartment.
