Brothers and sisters, everyone wants a lifefree of hardship and difficulties. But this isnever the reality, is it? Life itself is a conceptof duality: yursa (ease) and ursa (difficulty).Both are part and parcel of human life! It is

important as Muslims who believe in the Qur’aan and followthe Sunnah of Prophet Mohammed (SAW) to live a life withbelief and faith in Allaah (SWT). Allaah (SWT) is the one whomakes yursa (ease) for us and has promised to make everyursa (difficulty) followed by ease, prosperity and success. AndAllaah (SWT) tells us in the Qur’aan, Chapter 94, Surah Al-Inshirah – “Fa inna ma’al usri yusra Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra”:“that certainly with every difficulty comes ease”. Allaah (SWT)is telling us in Chapter 94, if we can endure the hardships andstand firm against the miseries we are faced with, then withpatience and Imaan, he will always provide a solution, a wayout, a relief, a way that leads to ease and happiness. There isalways going to be some challenging situation, something thattries to discourage us and break our faith in Allaah (SWT). Butwe must remain firm in our faith and believe that Allaah willtake care of us! We can take a look at two examples in history.1. First, is that of Prophet Mohammed (SAW). The prophetalways had a positive demeanor and greeted everyone with“Alhamdulillah ‘alaa kuli haal” translated as “all praise and thanksare only for Allaah (SWT) in all circumstances”. He never de-picted himself as depressed, worried or angry. Yet despite hispositive demeanor, his Imaan was tested when his two youngsons died and people began ridiculing him, stating his God wasdispleased with him and he had no heir to continue legacy. ButAllaah (SWT) revealed to him in Chapter 108, Surah Al Kauther,verses 1-2: “Innaa a’taina kal kauthar, Fa salli li rabbika wanhar”,translated as “surely Mohammed (SAW), we have given youan abundance of goodness, therefore turn to your lord withprayer and sacrifice.” Mohammed (SAW) was told not to worryabout the two sons he had lost (ursa). But rather look at theabundance or “kauthar” Allaah(SWT) had given him (yursa),that is, the millions of followers in the world to continue thelegacy and fellowship of Islam.2. The second example is that of Adam and Hawwa (Eve).When Allaah (SWT) created Adam, he gave him paradise. ThenAllaah (SWT) created a wife for him, Hawwa, because he waslonely and needed tranquility and a companion in his life. Allaah(SWT) gave them permission to everything in paradise, theonly exception being the ‘tree’. They were forbidden to eatfrom the tree. Satan saw an opportunity to exploit Adam andHawwa’s weaknesses. And what did Satan do? And what didSatan do? He began creating doubts in Adam and Hawwa minds’and they begin asking themselves: ‘why is Allaah (SWT) for-bidding us from going to that tree?

THE GRAND MOSQUE OF PARISA Story of How Muslims Rescued JewsDuring the Holocaust and Free Men

Ruelle and Deborah Durlan DeSaiz and the movie “Free Men”which is a fictional story inspired by the events described inthe book. Free Men was co-written and directed by IsmaelFerroukhi. Jewish Book World Magazine rated the GrandMosque of Paris, 5 out of 5 stars. It is suggested for childrenfrom age 8- 11 but is likely to be of interest to young adults aswell as not so young adults. The story told in the book will beof interest to all ages. The book is remarkable not just for thestory but also for the beautiful double page oil paintings whichconvey the desperation and the danger of the Nazi occupationof Paris. Some of the painting also convey hope as do thewords of the book which includes a glossary and an extensivebibliography. It includes the message - “Save one life, and it isas if you’ve saved all of humanity” which is both an IslamicHadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammad) and a Jewish Prov-erb. The Grand Mosque of Paris tells the story of how Mus-lims at the Paris Mosque rescued Jews during the Nazi occu-pation. The Mosque was built in 1926 when Algeria, Moroccoand Tunisia were under French rule and many Muslims hadcome to Paris from those countries. The land for the Mosquewas a gift from the French government to thank the half- mil-lion Muslims who fought for France during WW 1. It includeda community center, library, steam baths, gardens, clinic, res-taurant and apartments for those who worked there. Some ofthe people who worked and lived there had children whichallowed them to hide North African Jewish children amongtheir own. Below the subbasement of the mosque were tun-nels, damp rooms (in which the adults were harbored) andhundreds of miles of dark passageways in which one couldeasily be lost or, if you knew the way, make your way to anescape on the Seine river. The book explains that the people ofNorth Africa, Jews and Muslim lived as neighbors, shared similarcultures, referred to each other as brothers and looked verymuch alike. This is why Salim, a gay Jewish man from Algeriawas able to safely live in the Mosque and pretend to be Mus-lim. Others who could not pass as North African Muslims werehidden for a few days at the Mosque until they could escapevia a barge from the Mosque to a central wine market on thebanks of the Seine River. Two of the people who escaped viathe barge were Albert Assouline, a Jew and Yassa Rahal, aMuslim who were friends from North Africa. After they es-caped from a prisoner of war camp in Germany they managedto get to Paris, sheltered at the Mosque for a few days untilthey could be smuggled onto the barge and hidden among thewine barrels for their escape from Paris.

Many are moved to tears uponfirst sight and drop in prostration. In the middle of September2016, I was honored with a rare and unprecedented opportunityof a lifetime, an invitation to participate in the washing of theinside of the holy Kaaba. This opportunity was one that peoplecould only ever dream of and provided me with an invaluableexperience that goes beyond words. There was an elation ofemotion that went through my mind as I received the invitationfrom the General Presidency of Haramain – Masjid Al Haram. Iwas shocked, surprised and overjoyed at the thought of beinginside the blessed Kaaba, which had once been graced with thepresence of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be uponhim). I could not believe my ears when I received the officialcall and I had to pinch myself to make sure that I was notdreaming. Was I really being given this once in a lifetimeopportunity? It took me about 20 minutes to compose myselfas I came to the realization that I had indeed, received the officialinvitation from Haramain – Masjid Al Haram and was about toembark on a spiritual and blessed experience that one couldnever envisage. I began my journey to Saudi Arabia via Dubai,where our company, Divine Connect LLC, had won theprestigious Innovation4Impact Competition at the Global IslamicEconomy Summit 2016. My journey to the holy city of Makkahwas one that was filled with a number of emotions from anxiety,enthusiasm, excitement and an enhanced and elevated spiritualconnection which I had never experienced before, not even onmy prior trips for Hajj and Umrah. When the plane toucheddown at the airport in Jeddah my adrenalin, heart rate andbreathing was at its peak. I was one step closer to the doors ofthe holy Kaaba. As I step foot on the soil of Arabia, each footsteptook my breath away as I envisaged what the inside of theKaaba would be like and how I would feel once I am actuallyinside. I arrived at Masjid Al Haram and performed Umrah firstand gave my gratitude to Allah. Walking into Masjid Al Haramgave me goosebumps, especially when I saw the, majestic holyKaaba standing tall before my eyes.

us undoubtedly, reflect on the events of the past year. The pastyear for some, may have been positive and overall a successfuland blessed year. For others it may have included both goodand sad events. When we do reflect on our individual experi-ences, let us remember the many inspirational and uplifting re-minders Allah (SWT) prescribed for us, to keep us on the trackof happiness, hopefulness and optimism.Ch. 40:60“Allah says:“Call upon Me; I will answer your prayers.”{Ch. 7:186}“My Mercy embraces all things”{Ch. 2 Verse 152}“So remember me and I will remember you”Ch. 2, Verse 153: “Oh you who believe! Seek help with patientperseverance and prayer, for God is with those who patientlypersevere”.{Quran 57:4} “And He is with you wherever you are”{Ch. 94:4}“So, Verily, With Every Difficulty, There is Relief “{Ch. 3:17} “Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the Best Dis-poser of affair”.{Ch. 11:06} “And there is no creature on earth but that uponAllah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling andplace of storage. All is in a Clear Register”{Ch. 110:03}“Celebrate the praises of your Lord, and pray forHis Forgiveness. Indeed! He is ever ready to show Mercy”{Ch. 73:20}“And whatever good you send forth for your souls,you will find it with Allah, better and greater in reward”.”“And We send not the messengers except as bearers of goodtidings and warners”.{Ch. 06:48} So those who believe and perform righteous deeds:upon them shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve.”{Ch. 26:62}“Indeed! My Lord is with me. He will guide me.”{Ch. 08:70}“If Allah finds any good in your heart, He will giveyou something better than what has been taken from you.”{Ch. 55:10-13} And He has created the earth for you.Thereinare fruit and date-palms, and husked grain, and scented herbs.Which is it, of the favors of your Lord that ye deny?”{Ch. 02:152}“So remember Me; and I will remember you. Andbe grateful to Me; and do not deny Me.”{Ch. 11:88}“And my success cannot come from any sourcebesides God. I have put my trust in Him.”These are just a few reminders that Allah (SWT) has ordainedfor us to always place our trust in Him and know He will al-ways be there for us. May Allah (SWT) continue to bless us allwith His mercy, sustenance, protection and bless us with Hisbounties. Please pray for all those who are suffering in thisworld, in war torn and war ravaged countries.

A Death-Dealing JourneyFor A Better Life

However since that will likely not be possible, you can nevertruly understand or feel how a Rohingya residing in the RakhineState lives with threat for his or her life. They live through thispersistent fear and continue their lives in very harsh conditionsin several registered or mostly unregistered camps. The worldfirst heard their names when violent clashes between the Bud-dhists and Muslims arose in 2012 in Rakhine State and hun-dreds have been killed since then. According to the HumansRights Watch, thousands of houses were burnt in Rohingyavillages in Arakan. Even when these poor people did not appearin the news headlines, they were still exposed to unabated mal-treatment and oppression. Therefore, HRW categorized themas the world’s most persecuted people. The clashes in Rakhinere-escalated when nine police officers were killed on October 9by armed assaulters whose identities are still unknown and inresponse to this attack Myanmar soldiers spilled onto border ofMyanmar and Bangladesh looting villages, shooting men, andraping women. This sudden increase in violence urged a greatmany Rohingyas to flee the country. These last forty days areconsidered to be the bloodiest since the 2012 clashes; morethan 100 people have been killed and nearly 500 houses wereburnt in these recent attacks. In addition to all these, the regionsuffers nearly a complete lockdown on humanitarian aid andmedia access as UN official Yanghee Lee complained, "It is notacceptable that for six weeks there has been a completelockdown, with no [humanitarian] access to the affected area."Due to the lack of humanitarian aid, 3,000 children sufferingwith severe acute malnutrition in the area are at the risk of dy-ing and 150,000 people are suspended from receiving food andmedications. Amid all these sufferings, Myanmar’s de factoleader San Suu Kyi is being seriously criticized due to her si-lence and denying all the accusations against these ongoingcrimes. When she came to power about a year ago, peoplehoped she would make some improvements and bring changein terms of human rights issues since she was considered ademocracy icon and was herself a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.Even, the US administration eased the sanctions againstMyanmar hoping that, among other achievements, the new gov-ernment will focus on bringing “respect for human rights to itspeople.” However, things exacerbated since she came to powerand she didn’t take any steps to stop this persecution. Againstall odds, these persecuted people flee their homelands with thehope of a better life.

Two incomes but more divorces; fancier houses but bro-ken homes27. THIS IS THE PARADOX OF OUR TIMES TODAY28. So……Let’s not keep anything for a special occasion, be-cause every day that we live is a special occasion from TheAlmighty.29. Search for knowledge, read more; sit on your front/backporch and admire the view without paying attention to yourneeds30. Spend more time with your family and friends, eat yourfavorite foods (in moderation) and visit the places you love31. Life is a chain of moments of enjoyment; not only aboutsurvival32. When Allah created the universe,Al-mighty established a system to run it, which includes livingon earth. Divine laws and regulations (“religion” how to livelife) were set and clearly defined to govern our way of life.Allah created us (to worship only Him, and Him alone), andcreated everything (for our existence and sustains). Evidently,it would be illogic to have one Allah, one human creation, andhave different religions, one for each nation. Will it be fair onjudgment’s day to judge each nation according to their ownreligion, even though the Divine laws are one? It is only ratio-nal for us to have one universal faith, Allah wanted to guide notto confuse us. “Indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and Iam your Lord, so worship Me.” {Quran Al-Anbya (The proph-ets)92}. People say, true it is one religion, with diverse inter-pretation, how “I am God, no others beside me, associate mewith non.” has different meanings. You do not have to believein what I say; I am only presenting the facts based on myresearch. We all know the saying “When in doubt throw itout”, but I say, “When in doubt Read it out”. Also they say;“Do not judge the book by its cover.” Islam is perfect, Mus-lims are not. “Do not judge Islam by the actions of Muslims,but judge Muslims according to Islam.” The first commandAllah Al-Mighty gave in the Quran, the first word in the firstrevealed verse is Read: “Read, in the name of your Lord whohas created (all that exists), has created man out of a clot,Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught(the writing) by the pen, has taught man that which he knewnot.” {Quran Al-�Alaq1-5}. Not “Do not ask, just have faithand Believe.” (in Church’s teaching and/or in altered gospelswritten by uncertain authors). Not” Listen to what others aresaying.” (priests, leaders, friends and family). Not “Watch themedia spreading biased views.”, but Read. This is exactly whatI did, and I encourage you to do your own research, and Read.

My friends, Al-Hamdulillaah, we recentlyentered the new year of 2017 and a fewmonths ago we started the Islamic year 1438.Allah SWT God Almighty tells us in HisQuran, 59:18-19 “O you who believe, fear

Allah and let every soul look to what (provision) it has sentforth for tomorrow. Yes, fear Allah, for Allah is well acquaintedwith what you do. And be not like those who forgot Allah, soHe made them forget themselves. Such are the rebellious trans-gressors!” At times like these and others, we should be reflect-ing on how we lived our life in the past years and see what wehave sent forth for tomorrow; the next life which is forever.How much time we spent daily praying, how often we read theholy Quran, how often we helped those in need, visited thesick, volunteered at the Mosque or helped to feed and clothe thepoor for the sole pleasure of Allah God Almighty. My friends, allthese different acts of worship and goodness we do is based onthe strength of our faith and Taqwa (God consciousness) andour relationship with our Creator. He will bring us even closerto Him if we consistently worship Him and strive to performmore duties that are pleasing to Him. Umar RA said we shouldtake an account of ourselves before we have to give an accountfor ourselves. Have we done that? Why not do a self-evaluationof our performance in life in preparation to meet with AllahSWT. This will greatly assist us in our life performance reviewwhich will be done by Allah SWT and will determine if we getpaid well or not for the job we did in this life in serving Him. Myfriends, the Day of Evaluation will be the real moment of truth,the Day of Judgment; we will either get rewarded for all ourhard work, sacrifice and strong performance in this life thruAllah’s mercy and thus earn His Paradise, or we will be pun-ished for our lazy performance and may be thrown into the fireof Hell. (May Allah protect us all from the fire of Hell, ameen)and Allah knows best. Many of us fall short and must striveharder to get closer to our Lord. Let us identify our faults andshortcomings in the obedience of God’s commands and in fol-lowing the teachings and character of our role model ProphetMuhammad PBUH. Let us make the sincere intention to learnmore about what is required of us to better serve our Lord. Letus follow up by making the necessary adjustments in our livesby making every effort to perform better this year than lastyear, better this month than last month, better this week thanlast week. Let us strive to strengthen our faith and our Taqwaby trying to pray to our Lord 5 times daily, reading and under-standing the Quran and by making the sacrifice to increase ourknowledge of Islam and by seeking the patience to stay thecourse and overcome all the obstacles and tests that may comeour way.

lushes gardens spread overseveral miles, haram full ofbeautiful women, and a supe-rior mighty army with nomatch. He ruled the countrywith pride and ego, with a fistof terror and evil. The peoplein his country were very poor.They were living in an envi-ronment of poverty, terror,and injustice. Eventually,people started dying of hun-ger, and reached to the pointthat they turned to eating rats.And one day, they said enoughis enough, and went to thepalace to see the King. Theywere in a large procession,and were shouting, screamingand demanding food. The Kingdidn’t meet them because hedoesn’t want to face them.His soldiers started beating theprotesters and disperse thecrowd. But the King knew thatthey will be back. Now thatthe revolution has started, howlong he can keep them underhis thumb. He was sitting inhis garden worried and has noidea how to deal with this cri-sis. That is when his ChiefPriest walked in.The King explained the situa-tion to the Priest and asked forhis suggestion. The Prieststarted laughing and told theKing to relax. He said “Don’tworry at all. I will handle itmyself. You don’t have toeven talk to them.” The Kingwas very pleased and they in-vited the crowd to gather inthe Palace compound the nextday. This time the crowd waseven larger and was very up-set. The Priest appeared in the

balcony to address the crowd.When the people saw the“heavenly” face of the Priest,they stopped shouting and be-came very respectful. Theyexplained to the Priest that theyare hungry and have nothingto eat. Their children have nomilk, and they are all drinkingthe same water into which theydispose their wastes. “Pleasehelp us, please help us”. ThePriest told them to have pa-tience and not to lose hope. Hetold them that they are askingsomeone to help them, whohimself needs help. The Kingis not the sustainer; God is thesustainer. When the Kingneeds help, he bows to Godand ask Him to guide the King.When the King needs food, heprays to God for food. TheKing is himself a receiver andthe almighty God is the oneand only giver. God is oursustainer and He always willtake care of us. We are all Hischildren and God loves us.Please pray to the almightyGod to give you food, and allthe help you need. He haspromised to listen to you andme. God is great.People started dispersing andplanning to pray in large con-gregations. The Priest offerthem to provide local priestswho will organize and leadtheir congregations. However,some folks were not happyand have more complaints.They told the Priest that theKing’s soldiers take their livestocks, destroy their homesand kidnap their daughters.There is no justice and no onelistens to us. The Priest toldthem again to have patient andnot to lose hope. They will berewarded per their deeds andyou will be rewarded for whatyou have done. He is watch-ing each and everyone of us.

This hard time is a test for youfrom God. If you are success-ful in this test, then you willbe rewarded with a place inheaven in the hereafter. This avery short life, a few years.The life in the hereafter is eter-nal. Just take the hunger andthe cruelty and the injusticewith a smile. Do not com-plaint. Your destiny will be ahigh place in the heaven. Nowpeople have a clear answer andleft the Palace compoundpeacefully. They were stillvery hungry and were collaps-ing on their way back due tostarvation and sickness.After a while, the people of thiscountry realize what the gamethe King and the Priest wereplaying with them. How theywere distorting their religionand the name of God to pro-mote their self-rule. So, oneday they again marched to thepalace, armed with sticks andstones. Waves and waves ofpoor and hungry citizens de-stroyed the royal gardens andransack the palaces. Theypulled the King and the Roy-als into the streets and butch-ered them. They unlocked thewarehouses full of food anddistributed it to the needy pub-lic. They took over the gov-ernment and established de-mocracy, for the people andby the people. The Chief Priestescaped and was hiding in theelegant and great church thatthe King has built for him. Thepeople did not kill the Priestas they still respect him. Forthem he was the “face” ofGod. However, they confinedhim to the four walls of thechurch. They told him thatfrom this day onwards youhave absolutely no authorityoutside the church. We willcommit all kind of sins rightunder your watch, but youcannot stop us. We will declaregay-marriage, abortion, adul-

tery and nudity as acceptableroutines and norms of our so-ciety, and you cannot raise afinger to criticize us. You canpreach inside these walls, butyou cannot interfere with ourdaily lives outside the church.You will have no participationin our government or in ourlaws. We are declaring sepa-ration of Church and State.The country started progress-ing and the citizens becameprosperous. There was toler-ance, social justice, freedomof speech, and human rights.They established institutions,promote higher education, andwelfare system for the needy.They were following all thesteps that their religion hasoriginally taught them. Therewere inventions and great con-tributions to the society and tothe life of a common man.Many countries try to copythem, however very few suc-ceeded. Today most of thecountries in this world are stillbeing ruled by the “King” andby the “Priest”. Today, yestoday, hunger kills more peopleeach year than AIDS, malariaand tuberculosis combined.Every 10 seconds, a child diesfrom hunger. And they are stilltelling us not to complaint. Bepatient. You will be rewardedwith a high place in heaven.They are still using our reli-gion and distorting God’sname to benefit their desiresand to promote their self-rule.The president of the countryis a billionaire and is on theForbes list, where as his citi-zens are drinking the samewater that they dispose theirwastes into. May God help us.

This blessed family hasthe unique honor and distinction of havingbeen selected as the custodians of the keysto the golden doors of the holy Kaaba bythe Prophet (peace be upon him) till theday of resurrection, as guided by Allahthe exalted, in verse 58 of Surah An-Nisa.I was firstly introduced to a group ofhighly respected individuals and scholarswho were present. Shortly afterwards,army and police security escorted us tothe Kaaba and my heart was racing inanticipation. It was a tremendous momentin my life, walking side by side along withthe Al-Shaibi family members to the holyKaaba. I was extremely humbled by thishonor and felt that this was truly a giftfrom Allah. As I walked towards the Kaabawith tears building up in my eyes, Iremembered my loving parents, may Allahhave mercy on them, who passed away adecade ago. The thought of my mother,who was a very humble and pious woman,came into my mind as I held back thetears. I always remember my motherspending most of her time on the prayerrug and making duas for her eight childrenand all of the underprivileged worldwide.My mother was very active in charitywork and helped many people despite thefact that we ourselves were from a middleclass background from a village in Kerala,South India. I could have never imaginedthat I would be in this position today, beinginvited inside the Kaaba and I know thatmy parents would have been extremelyhappy if they had been alive today.

FURTHER KNOWINGTHE MAN HAZRAT ALI (R.A.)

A few months ago, I gave a little insight into thelife of that distinguished soldier - first youth toaccept Islam – Hazrat Ali. Coming from the BanuHashim, Quraish’s most respectable family,Hazrat Ali (R.A.) lived up to expectations by set-ting high standards of the virtues of humanity

which had a strong Islamic flavour. The son of Fatimah bint ibnHashim, Asad, Hazrat Ali (R.A.) was also known as ‘Abul Hasan’and ‘Abu Turab’, in addition to having illustrious titles which areAsadullah, Haydar and Murtarda. His wife was Hazrat Fatimah(R.A.), daughter of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), andshe bore Hazrat Ali (R.A.) two famous sons, Hazrat Hasan and Husain.Many people are noted for their bravery in battles, but Hazrat Ali(R.A.) will go down in history as one who truly demonstrated gal-lantry at its highest level – a trait that won him accolades from manin his time. Armed with wisdom, an all-conquering spirit and lovefor Islam, Hazrat Ali secured victories which Alhamdulliah (All praiseis due to Allah) brought a glow to the world. A few of his success-ful battles were those of Uhud, Badr the Trench and Khaibar. Be-sides being a warrior of great repute, Hazrat Ali (R.A.) was a manof scholarship. Prophet Muhammad once said: “I am the city ofknowledge and Ali is its gate.” Ali (R.A.) was a qadi (judge) of greateminence and also well known for his polished deliveries of Arabicboth in writing and speech. Thousands of people have left a legacyrich with quotations of a philosophical nature that have benefittedmany. Those sayings make good reading for anyone who has astrong intellectual thirst. One person who bequeathed to us suchmeaningful and philosophical quotes was Hazrat Ali (R.A.), someof the examples being:-‘Intelligence disappears in the dazzlement of greed.’-‘Knowledge elevates the lowest to the highest position and igno-rance drops the highest to the lowest position.’-‘A foolish person is always dependent on others while an intelli-gent person is always independent of others.-‘Experience is knowledge gained.’-‘Ignorance harms a man more than cancer in his body.’-‘A worldwide reputation can be undone by an hour’s degradation.’-‘Beware of backbiting, for it sows the seeds of bitterness and sepa-rates you from Allah and man.’-‘Never speak when it is not the time for speech.’-‘A sign of Imaan (faith) is that even if you fear harm by speakingthe truth, you should still speak the truth.’-‘One who thinks himself the best is the worst.’-‘Better be alone than with bad company.’-‘Every breath of man is a step nearer to death.’What more can I ask of a man having such a wonderful calibre?Hazrat Ali was truly a colossus on the world’s stage for he shapedthe minds of people in his time and still continues to impact onMuslims and others today. Therefore, we should all be thankful forthe last caliph’s input in history and hope that Almighty Allah granthim Jannatul Firadus (very high position in Jannah or Paradise).

ceive all of the benefits of exercise you need to start at ayoung age. While it’s to your benefit to begin exercisingwhile young, there is no denying the importance and im-pact of exercise on a persons well being at any age, espe-cially for seniors. It is common for seniors to believe thereis no purpose in beginning or continuing to exercise asthey age. I am here to tell you, there is a great purpose.Let me help clarify some of the myths associated withexercise and senior citizens, as well as give you some in-sight on the advantages physical activity can have on yourbody. I have too many hurdles to overcome. Consistentphysical activity allows your body to decrease, or in somecases even eliminate, the risk of health conditions and ill-ness’ which may lead to increased medication intake andfrequent hospitalizations. While there are inevitable physi-cal aspects that will occur beyond your control, there arethings that you can improve such as your posture andweight. It’s too late for me. It is never too late to improveyour health. Science has proven that elders who have takenup exercise in their later years show greater physical andmental improvements over the younger generation. Whatif I fall? The positive factors associated with physical fit-ness and seniors include the improvement of flexibility,endurance, strength and balance. As you build up yourbones, your balance becomes increasingly more stable,which lessens your chances of falls and other injuries thatunfortunately may occur often. You’re too tired to exer-cise? Exercise actually improves your ability to sleep andcan provide you with more energy. There’s just to muchfor me to do. You may notice you are able to manage dailystress a lot better too. To your advantage, many of thediseases associated with aging may be prevented simplyfrom exercising. Start off with body weight bearing exer-cises and slowly increase resistance to ease your body.Walk a block and increase your distance and graduallyyour speed each day. Consistency is key. Everything hurts,I can’t exercise. If you suffer from wounds, it has beennoted that with exercise, the wound-healing process speedsup. Consult with your doctor who can help you develop apersonalized exercise plan that will fit your needs. Yourdoctor will most likely perform a physical examination onyou and review your medications to be certain exercisehas no effect on the medications you are taking. There isno excuse or boundary to physical fitness. Think of physi-cal fitness as not just adding years to your life but addinglife to your years. Some of us work longer hours striving formore money but we foolishly spend only a fewminutes if any at all in our daily salat praying toAllah, the One who truly provides the sustenance,health, wealth protection and contentment for usto live in peace. Our Lord is the one who wakesus up after being dead in our sleep. He gives usthe health, motivation and courage to go out towork, without His mercy and blessings we can’teven get out of bed. My friends, if we spendmore time pleasing the One who provides for us,then we won’t have to work as hard as we do; ifwe work smarter, maybe we won’t have to workharder. We may not have to put in extra hours asAllah will provide more for us and He will give usthe salary increases and promotions for being loyalto Him. He will give us what we need to get aheadin life as He loves us more and is pleased withour efforts to connect to Him 5 times a day thruour prayers, and to love Him the way He wantsus to show our love for Him, and to pray to Himthe way He wants us to pray to Him. We mustmake the effort to live a balanced life, make theeffort daily to please our Lord and get closer tohim and to earn an honest living, without all thefraud, deceit and corruption, and without tryingto beat the system etc. We cannot let our jobs orquest for money or other material gains or ourhobbies take us away from the remembrance ofour Lord Allah SWT. Just a few minutes in sin-cere focus and love and remembrance of our Lordis worth more than this entire world and every-thing in it, just imagine. Let us consult with ourheart, we know what’s right from wrong andwe know of Allah’s laws and commands but wetend to choose the love of this life and blatantlydisobey the commands of our Lord, which ifobeyed, will lead to good in this life and moreimportantly good in the hereafter. Also, when youfeel the urge to do a good deed, do it without anyhesitation. Don’t be deceived by the devil whowill tell you to do it tomorrow for we may neverget there. May Allah SWT guide all mankind andbless us, our children and the ummah with thebest Iman and Taqwa and give us the motivationand best health to serve Him alone constantly andselflessly in all aspects of our lives with our wealthand possessions only for His pleasure, and mayHe grant us all the best tomorrow with JannatulFirdaus and without reckoning, Ameen.

His previous assignment was as the SeniorReservist for the Wing Chapel at Travis AFB, CA. In his civilian position, Chaplain Caggianelli currently serves as the Dean ofPastoral Formation and assistant professor at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach FL. Previously he hasserved as associate pastor, diocesan vocation director and parish administrator in the Diocese of Venice in Florida.



Ahmed Somia, a Muslim doctor from Tunisia worked to pro-tect Jewish children at risk of arrest by fabricating illnessesand sending them to clinics away from Paris. They providedsome with false identity papers showing them to be Muslim orChristian. At the Muslim hospital where he worked, he and theother doctors hid Allied pilots and parachutists by day and treatedthem at night. Some of the patients treated had come to Franceas spies and some were shot down by Nazis. After they weretreated they were transported to shelter at the Mosque. Thebook quotes a letter that was found in the papers of a Tunisianowned Paris café. In July of 1942 almost thirteen thousandJews were arrested in Paris. The letter is believed to have beenwritten during the summer of 1942. It was translated fromKabyle, a language from the Atlas Mountains of Algeria: “Yes-terday at dawn, the Jews of Paris were arrested. The elderly,the women and the children. In exile like ourselves, workerslike ourselves. They are our brothers. Their children are likeour own children. Anyone who encounters one of his childrenmust give that child shelter and protection for as long as mis-fortune- or sorrow- lasts. Oh man of my country, your heart isgenerous.” The book speculates whether the letter was readout in the café or circulated among the Kabyle workers ofParis or the boarding houses where the men lived but statesthat this letter seems to be a call to action and proof of thestrong bond between the North African Muslims and Jews.The movie, Free Men, which was inspired by the story in TheGrand Mosque of Paris, premiered at the 2011 Cannes FilmFestival. The film weaves fictional characters into the storyalongside real characters. Algerian-born Jewish historian Ben-jamin Stora has acted as an adviser on Free Men. Younes, afictional character, is a young Muslim man from Algeria whosell cigarettes, eggs and whatever else he can sell on the blackmarket. He is caught by the French Immigration police whorecruit him to spy on the Mosque which is suspected of aidingJews. In his efforts to spy for the police he meets the rector ofthe Mosque, Si Kaddour Benghabrit and Salim Halali who wereboth real people. Si Kaddour Benghabrit was considered to bethe most influential Muslim in France and Salim was a youngBerber Jew from Algeria, a celebrated singer, pretending to beMuslim. After being mentored by the rector, Younes begins toassist the rector and Salim in assisting in the escape of theJews in Paris, some of whom were sheltered in the Mosque.Younes becomes interested in Leila, a beautiful Jewish womanliving in the Mosque (as a Muslim) and working to help otherJews, including her brother, escape. Salim had been provided aCertificate of Conversion to show that his grandfather hadconverted to Islam. When the Nazis began suspecting that theMosque was providing false Muslim birth certificates and fakeconversion certificates to Jews, the rector arranged to have anunmarked tombstone in the Muslim cemetery engraved withSalim’s family name which saved his life when he was pickedup by the Nazis.
