RESEARCH : Systematic inquiry into a subject in order to discover or checks facts
PENELITIAN adalah studi yang dilakukan melaluipenyelidikan yang hati-hati dan sempurna terhadapsuatu masalah, sehingga diperoleh pemecahan yang tepat terhadap masalah tersebut [Hilway, 1956].
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 1995
Research is often described as an active, diligent, and systematic process of inquiry aimed at discovering, interpreting and revising facts. This intellectual investigation produces a greater understanding of events, behaviors, or theories, and makes practical applications through laws and theories.
The term research is also used to describe a collection of information about a particular subject, and is usually associated with science and the scientific method.
The word research derives from Middle French; its literal meaning is 'to investigate thoroughly'.

BASIC RESEARCH (RISET DASAR)
Basic research (also called fundamental or pure research) has as its primary objective the advancement of knowledge and the theoretical understanding of the relations among variables (see statistics).
The terms “basic” or “fundamental” indicate that, through theory generation, basic research provides the foundation for further, sometimes applied research. As there is no guarantee of short-term practical gain, researchers often find it difficult to obtain funding for basic research. Research is a subset of invention
It is exploratory and often driven by the researcher’s curiosity, interest, or hunch. It is conducted without any practical end in mind, although it may have unexpected results pointing to practical applications.
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 2006http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research
Applied research is done to solve specific, practical questions; its primary aim is not to gain knowledge for its own sake. It can be exploratory, but is usually descriptive. It is almost always done on the basis of basic research.
APPLIED RESEARCH (RISET TERAPAN)
Applied research can be carried out by academic or industrial institutions. Often, an academic institution such as a university will have a specific applied research program funded by an industrialpartner interested in that program.
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 2006http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research
There are many instances when the distinction between basic and applied research is not clear.
It is not unusual for researchers to present their project in such a light as to 'slot' it into either applied or basic research, depending on the requirements of the funding sources.
Some say that the difference between basic and applied research lies in the time span between research and reasonably foreseeable practical applications.

METODOLOGI PENELITIAN
METHODOLOGY :1. A system of methods2. The underlying principles and rules
of a system or procedure
METHOD :1. An orderly procedure for doing something2. Order or system in doing anything.
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 1995
The scope of the research process is to produce some new knowledge. This, in principle, can take three main forms:
1. Exploratory research: a new problem can be structured and identified
2. Constructive research: a (new) solution to a problem can be developed
3. Empirical research: empirical evidence on the feasibility of an existing solution to a problem can be provided.

RESEARCH METHODS (METODE PENELITIAN)
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 2006http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research
Exploratory research is a type of research conducted because a problem has not been clearly defined. Exploratory research helps determine the best research design, data collection method and selection of subjects. Given its fundamental nature, exploratory research often concludes that a perceived problem doesn't actually exist.
Exploratory research often relies on secondary research such as reviewing available literature and/or data, or qualitative approaches such as informal discussions with consumers, employees, management or competitors, and more formal approaches through in-depth interviews, focus groups, projective methods, case studies or pilot studies.
Exploratory Research (1)
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 2006http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research
The results of exploratory research are not usually useful for decision-making by themselves, but they can provide significant insight into a given situation.
Although the results of qualitative research can give some indication as to the "why", "how" and "when" something occurs, it cannot tell us "how often" or "how many."
Exploratory research is not typically generalizable to the population at large.
Exploratory Research (2)
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 2006http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research
Constructive research is perhaps the most common computer science research method. This type of approach demands a form of validation that doesn’t need to be quite as empirically based as in other types of research like exploratory research.
Nevertheless the conclusions have to be objectively argued and defined. This may involve evaluating the “construct” being developed analytically against some predefined criteria or performing some benchmark tests with the prototype.
The term “construct” is often used in this context to refer to the new contribution being developed. Construct can be a new theory, algorithm, model, software, or a framework.
Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, 2006http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research
Constructive Research
Empirical research is any research that bases its findings on direct or indirect observation as its test of reality. Such research may also be conducted according to hypothetico-deductive procedures.
The researcher attempts to describe accurately the interaction between the instrument (which may be as simple as the human eye) and the entity being observed. If instrumentation is involved, the researcher is expected to calibrate her/his instrument by applying it to known standard objects and documenting the results before applying it to unknown objects.
In practice, the accumulation of evidence for or against any particular theory involves planned research designs for the collection of empirical data, and academic rigor plays a large part of judging the merits of research design.

• Ada 2 lumba-lumba.
• Kalo anda melihat keduanya sama, berarti anda tidak stress.
• Tapi kalau anda melihat ada perbedaan diantara 2 lumba-lumba ini, berarti anda stress.
• Semakin banyak perbedaan yg anda lihat berarti anda stress berat.
• Test ini sdh diuji coba oleh para ahli ke para pasien sakit jiwa dan terbukti ketelitiannya sebagai indikator stress.
SELINGAN
Generally, research is understood to follow a certain structural process. Though step order may vary depending on the subject matter and researcher, the following steps are usually part of most formal research, both basic and applied:
1. Formation of the topic 2. Hypothesis 3. Conceptual definitions 4. Operational definitions 5. Gathering of data 6. Analysis of data 7. Conclusion, revising of hypothesis
