Primary-SecondaryLiaisonYearsofcollaborationbetweenPenicuikHighSchoolandourAssociatedPrimarieshaveresultedintheformationofparticularlygoodliaisonarrangements.SeniorstafffromtheHighSchoolandthePrimarySchoolsmeetregularlytooverseejointdevelopmentworkinvolvingalltheschoolsandarrangementsforthetransferofPrimary7pupilstotheHighSchool.MembersofstafffromeachoftheschoolshavealreadymadesignificantprogressonnationalinitiativesinEnglishLanguage,Mathematics,andcollaborativeworkinScienceandTechnology,aspartofEnvironmentalStudies,ModernLanguagesandinArtandDesign.HighSchoolstaffwhoareinvolvedinthesedevelopmentsandLearningSupportstaffvisitthePrimariesonaplannedbasis.Thisjointapproachasa‘cluster’ofschoolshelpstoprovidebothahighqualityeducationandcontinuityofexperienceforallofouryoungstersastheyprogressthroughtheprimaryandsecondaryschools.EnrolmentAlmostallstudentstransferautomaticallyattheendofPrimary7totheircatchmentareaHighSchoolfromtheassociatedprimaryschools.InformationconcerningthetransferisprovidedbytheprimaryHeadTeacher,normallyinDecember.ByJanuary,parentsshouldreceivealetterfromtheauthorityindicatingthataplacehasbeenreservedinthecatchmentareasecondaryschool.AProspectusisalsoprovided.Ifparentshaveanyconcerns,theyshouldcontactPupilPlacementSectionatMidlothianCouncil,FairfieldHouse,8LothianRoad,Dalkeith,EH223AAortheHeadTeacheroftheSecondaryschoolconcerned,forfurtheradvice.PleasenotethatallapplicationsforAugustadmissionsfortheincomingFirstYearareadministeredbytheEducationandCommunitiesDivisionuntil31July.Thereafter,applicationsshouldbemadedirectlytotheschool.AllotherenquiriesforschoolplacesshouldbeaddressedtotheHeadTeacherwhowillproviderelevantinformationandmakearrangementsforavisittotheschool.P7InductionProgrammeThepreparationforsecondaryschoolstartsinNovemberwithamorningvisitforpupilsfollowedbyaParents’OpenEvening.Primary7pupilsthenvisittheHighSchoolinJunefortwofulldaysduringwhichtimetheygettomeetsomeoftheirnewteachersandfollowtheirS1timetable.ThisalsogivestheP7pupilsanopportunitytogettoknowandworkwiththeschoolprefects,whowillhavetheresponsibilityofsupportingandleadingthethemfromclasstoclass.ThisbuddyingarrangementwiththeprefectsisrepeatedforaroundtwoweeksinAugusttoassistthenewyeargroupinfindingtheirwayaroundarelativelycomplexbuilding.AtthestartofthesummertermSeniorManagementandGuidanceTeachersfromPenicuikHighwillvisiteachofourassociatedprimaryschoolstospeaktothePrimary7pupilsaboutthetransition,andthereareopportunitiesforthePrimary7pupilstoraiseanyquestionstheymayhaveabouttheirtransfer.

GuidanceSystemTheorganisationoftheGuidanceSystemissupervisedbytheDeputeHeadTeacher(StudentSupport),workingwithPrincipalTeachersandtheHeadsofHouse.ThemainaimsoftheGuidanceSystemare:

Religious,Moral&PhilosophicalStudiesReligiousandMoralEducation,taughtasRMPS,ispartoftheCoreCurriculumforstudentsinScottishSecondarySchoolsandiscertificatedinS4andS5/S6.Parentsareresponsibleforthereligiousbeliefsoftheirchildren,andnoattemptwillbemadebyteacherstopromoteoneparticularfaith.Studentswillbeaskedtothinkaboutsuchfundamentalquestionsaswhetherlifehasmeaning,purposeandvalue.Theywillbetaughtto:

Whetherornotweagreewithaparticularreligiousoutlook,weareallaffectedbyreligiousviewsandvalues.ChristianityhasbeenextremelyimportantinScottishsociety.However,todayScotlandhasmanydifferentreligioustraditionsandthereisaneedtoteachunderstandingofeachother’sbeliefs.Childrenwilllearnaboutdifferentreligionsinanobjectivewayandwillbeencouragedtodeveloppositiveattitudestolifeandapersonalworldview,whiletheimportanceofChristianitytoScottishhistoryandcultureisalsorecognised.Students’spiritual,moral,socialandculturalawarenessispromotedthroughPhilosophyandReligiousStudiesandalsothroughSocialEducationandAssemblies.ParentswhowishtoexercisetheirrighttowithdrawtheirchildfromclassesinReligiousandMoralEducationshouldwritetotheHeadTeacher,statingreasons.

HomeworkPolicyThedevelopmentofgoodstudyhabitsisanimportantaspectoflearningandthesupportofparentsisclearlydesirableinensuringthatyoungstersdevelopthehabitofdoinghomeworkregularlyandthoroughly.Intheearlyyearsatsecondaryschoolhomeworkwillbeassignedforawiderangeofsubjects,manyofwhichareentirelynew.AtthestartofthesessionallstudentsaregivenashortinductiononhowtousetheirschoolPlannertoplanandorganisehomework,assignments,folios,investigationsetc.Hopefully,theinformationinthefilewillalsohelpparentstosupporttheiryoungstersinthewiderangeofactivitieswhichconstitutehomeworkorlearningoutofschool.ThestructureforlearningoutofschoolwhichthePlannerprovidesissupportedbytwoothercomplementaryareas,namely:ashortStudySkillsprogrammeaspartoftheFirstYearSocialEducationProgrammeand,resourcespermitting,afterschoolstudyprovision.TheprogrammeofsupportinitiatedinS1isconsolidatedthroughoutthelateryears.Parentscanassistby:

InstrumentalInstructionInstrumentalInstruction,underthedirectionoftheMusicDepartment,isofferedbyanextensiveteamofinstrumentalinstructors.Anystudent,usuallyinS1orS2,canapplyfortuitioninBrass,Violin,Cello,Drumkit&Percussion,Singing,Woodwind,GuitarandClarsach.MidlothianCouncilhasrecentlyimplementedapolicywhichasksforaparentalcontributiontowardsinstrumentallessons.Whilestillheavilysubsidisedbythecouncil,parentsareaskedtocontribute£150peryear,whichincludestuition,aloanofaninstrumentwherepossible,involvementinensemblesbothinschoolandatregionallevelandopportunitiestoperform.Pupilsreceivingfreeschoolmealsorclothinggrantsareexemptfromcharges.Thereisalsoabursaryschemeopentoalimitednumberofpupils.Demandforinstrumentalinstructioncanoutstrippracticalprovision,inwhichcase,studentsareselectedonthebasisofinterestshownandsuitabilityfortheirchoseninstrument.EveryeffortwillbemadetoprovidecontinuityoftuitionforthosestudentswhoreceivedinstrumentalinstructionatPrimary.Theywillhavepriority.However,instrumentalstaffprovisionwillinevitablydeterminewhatplacesareavailable.Thenamesofstudentswhocannotbegiveninstructionwillbekeptonawaitinglistforfutureconsiderationshouldplacesbecomeavailable.Theschoolhasalimitednumberofinstrumentswhichareloanedtostudentsfreeofcharge.However,whensufficientprogresshasbeenmade,itishopedthatstudentswillbuytheirowninstruments.MidlothianCounciloperatesaschemewhichenablesparentstopurchaseinstrumentsthroughtheschool,sothatfamiliescanbenefitfromeducationdiscountprices.AllstudentswillbeexpectedtoplayinoneoftheMusicDepartment’sensembles,e.g.orchestra,windband,etc.,whentheyhavereachedasuitablestandard.Thisexpandstheirmusicalabilityandknowledge,andisverybeneficialtotheirplayingability.SchoolPlayingFieldsPenicuikHighSchoolhasverygoodplayingfieldswhichareusedregularlybytheP.E.departmentandforafterschoolsportsclubssuchasRugby,Footballetcaspartofaninitiativetoimprovestudents'involvementinsport,theschoolhasasportscoordinatorwhoprovidesawiderangeofsportingactivities.TheschoolalsohasuseofasyntheticturfpitchinthePenicuikParkandtheswimmingpoolatthePenicuikCentre.SchoolSportsFacilitiesThecurrentschoolfacilitiesconsistof

hockeygrasspitchandathleticstrackandsyntheticturfpitch.
Wearedelightedtohavetheuseofthenewestadditiontoourfacilities,thecompetitionsizedswimmingpoolandcommunitycomplex.Thisfacilityalsoprovidesafitnesssuitewithawiderangeofcardiovascularandconditioningequipmentthatwillbeusedbothduringcurriculumtimeandaspartofourvariedextra-curricularprogramme.

Extra-curricularactivitiesExtra-curricularactivitiesareavaluablepartoftheyoungsters’educationalexperienceandstudentsareencouragedtotakepartinarangeofactivities.Allourafter-schoolclubsofferthechanceforpupilstobeinvolvedrecreationallyandformanythereistheopportunitytocompeteagainstotherclubsandschools.Sincetheintroductionoftheschoolhousesystem,manyofourpupilshaveenjoyedbothinter-housecompetitionsandfixturesagainstthestaffincludinghockey,basketballandcricket,footballandcrosscountry.ClubsandactivitieswhicharenormallyavailableincludeBadminton,Basketball,Choir,ClarsachGroup,DanceClub,Discos,FilmClub,FitnessClub,ForeignTrips,Hockey,Rugby,Football(Boys/Girls),Golf,JazzBand,ModelUnitedNations,Orchestra,Orienteering,RockBand,Skiing,StringsGroup,TableTennis,TheatreTrips,WindBand,WritersClub,SambaBand,DukeofEdinburghAward.Wearesupportedbybothparentsandseniorpupilsinboththedeliveryofourprogrammesandthetransportationofpupilstoawayfixtures.OurCommunitySportsLeadersAwardprogrammeavailabletoS5/6contributestooverhalfofourextracurricularteam.ThisallowsourseniorpupilstogainaUKrecognisedcoachingaward,encouragesvolunteeringinthecommunityaswellasaddressingthenationalproblemsofyouthcrimeandhighobesityrates.Whilemosttravelisnormallybyschoolminibuswedoappreciateourparenthelpers.Parentsmaybeaskedtocontributetothecostsinvolvedinprovidingextra-curricularactivities,usuallytocoversomeofthetravellingexpenses.Theschoolreservestherighttowithdrawstudentsfromextra-curricularactivitiesiftheirbehaviourandattitudeinnormalclasstimeareunsatisfactory.
