It’s looking to be a hot summer of culture even if it rains. This season is jam packed with cultural offerings launching with Apiculture: Bees and the Art of Pollination, a fascinating and important exhibition bringing together ten contemporary artists who are inspired by these vital pollinating insects. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear TS Eliot prize-winner John Burnside reading Bee Myths, and back by popular demand is Bugs Family Day, featuring animations and Bee movies, alongside a chance to get up close to all manner of insects and creepy crawlies.

The summer welcomes HOT’14 an exhibition celebrating the latest creative talent emerging from Plymouth University. Whilst our Celebrating Amadeus tribute marks the 30th Anniversary of the film adaption of Peter Shaffer’s stage play Amadeus, with highlights from the film sound track from the Ten Tors Orchestra and University of Plymouth Choral Society, alongside a special film screening and introductory talk by Peninsula Arts Director of Music, Simon Ible.

Our Talks programme takes in Japanese history, poetry and contemporary culture, alongside a series of Cogtalks organised by Plymouth University’s Cognition Institute and supported by Peninsula Arts which provides an ideal opportunity for everyone to be involved in lively debate and exchange.

BEE MytHS: JoHn BurnSidESee Page 18 for details

APiCulturE: BEES And tHE Art oF PollinAtionFrom prehistoric times to the present day, humans have felt a mysterious connection to bees, delighted by their honey and fascinated by their communal behavior and ecological function. The enduring importance of the bee in human consciousness is reflected in the art, architecture and archeology of most major cultures throughout history.

But bees are in trouble. As the scale of recent worldwide bee losses unfolds, Apiculture: Bees and the Art of Pollination, reevaluates our ancient relationship to, and reliance upon pollinating insects through the eyes of ten contemporary artists, including Bill Woodrow, Susan Derges, Tessa Farmer, Amy Shelton, and Thomas Thwaites.

Contributors include artist Thomas Thwaites whose work is featured in the Apiculture exhibition and Dr. Margaret Couvillon from the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects at the University of Sussex. Closed for Easter Weekend 18-21 April and 5 and 26 May

looking at Insects

MICHAEL DARBy

Our perception of insects has changed across the centuries. These changing attitudes have been reflected in the way that insects have been portrayed and recorded from the earliest illustrations to the hi-tech approach of today. As technology has evolved so have our ways of investigating this hidden world of insects. The exhibition will feature scans of the first book on butterflies published, a series of posters depicting insect pests from the 1930s, a 3D electron micrograph of a beetle and close-up photographs of startling vibrancy and intensity taken on a confocal fluorescence microscope.

With an ever increasing movement of people between places in this transnational age, there is a mounting number of mixed-race people in Japan, some visible others not.

Hafu is the unfolding journey of discovery into the intricacies of mixed-race Japanese and their multicultural experience in modern day Japan. The film follows the lives of five “hafus”–the Japanese term for people who are half-Japanese–as they explore what it means to be multiracial and multicultural in what once proudly proclaimed itself to be the mono-ethnic nation.

This month’s Cogtalk will discuss whether there can be a justification for euthanasia in cases such as dementia.Does ‘informed consent’ still count once they are incapacitated by illness? The issue of consent is key to many of the moral and legal arguments that surround euthanasia. In countries where euthanasia is legal safeguards exist to protect vulnerable people, nevertheless cases have emerged where medical professionals have legally assisted in the

death of patients with dementia, many of whom lack the capacity to make decisions about their medical care. Come along and participate in the debate.

Most songs tell a story or evoke an emotional experience, but some use the lyrics to talk about their own musical features. Ranging from Arthur Sullivan’s ‘The Lost Chord’ to Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘Unwritten’, Dr Bethany Lowe reflects on a wide variety of songs whose own harmony, melody, rhythm, structure, genre, temporality, and even compositional failures are their own subjects. What can we discover from these about the ways that ‘normal’ songs function?
