Tip of the PeninsulaBryson won’t seek re-election

CENTRAL SAANICH — The PNR learned this week that current Central Saanich Mayor and Chair of the Capital Regional District board Alastair Bryson won’t run again in November’s municipal election.

Bryson, who was was elected to Central Saanich council for the first time in 2005, was re-elected to council in 2008 and elected as Mayor in 2011. Watch for more in the News Review next week.

Counterfeit thief apprehendedSIDNEY — Police have apprehended one

of three men responsible for passing fake bills on the Saanich Peninsula last week.

On Aug. 15, three men attended multiple businesses in Sidney and attempted to pass counterfeit US $100 bills.

Sidney North Saanich RCMP members were not able to locate the men at the time, however, one of the men was apprehended by Victoria Police later that day.

The man (a young offender) has been charged with two counts of uttering counter-feit money and has been released from cus-tody on numerous conditions.

Some of the counterfeit money has been recovered but members of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP say there is still potential that other businesses on the Saanich Pen-insula unknowingly received and processed the counterfeit bills.

They are asking anyone who may have been affected or anyone who may have infor-mation on the counterfeit money to contact them at 250-656-3931.

news Review is on the moveLocal newspaper gets a new office across the streetSteven HeywoodNews staff

The Peninsula News Review is moving. But we’re not going far.

The office and staff of the Saanich Pen-insula’s local community newspaper, serving the Peninsula for more than 100 years, is relocating from its current office on Second Street in Sidney to … Second Street in Sidney.

Right across the street, no less.As of the week of August 25, the PNR

will be operating out of its new digs at #103-9830 Second Street. It’s the north corner office in the Stone’s Throw build-ing, right next to the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department’s back entrance. The space is well-suited to the PNR, highly-visible and continues to be accessible.

“We are looking forward to our move across the street in to our new premises,” says PNR Publisher Jim Parker. “We think it is important that we are based in the community we serve and our location is central to the Peninsula.

“As collectors of news and information, it is surprising what things we seem to have kept from previous moves, but it is nice to clean out the office and start fresh.”

The PNR hopes readers will pop in to check out the new digs and say hi to the staff.

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reach us with news tips or for advertis-ing quotes by phone at 250-656-1151 and online at www.peninsulanewsreview.com. Watch for our new sign.

SAANICHTON — The recipients of 40  Schulich Leader Scholarships  are heading off to universities across Canada this September to pursue undergraduate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineer-ing or Mathematics (STEM), including Stelly’s Secondary School graduate Aly-sha Rose.

Created by  Canadian business leader and philanthropist Seymour Schul-ich  three years ago, the annual awards program encourages high school gradu-ates to embrace STEM disciplines in their future careers.

This year, there were 1,147 Schulich Leader Nominees competing for the 40 awards. Rose, who will attend Dalhou-sie University in September, was awarded $60,000 towards her degree in a science based program.

To date, the scholarship has positively

impacted 120 students from across Can-ada by distributing more than $7.6 million to Canadian students.

“We are creating the next generation of technology innovators,” said Schulich of

the scholarships.“[Scholarships] of this size will moti-

vate high school students from across the country to pursue their dream and in the process help to ensure our country’s economic competitiveness.”

Schulich Leader Scholarships accept applications from every high school and secondary school across Canada who can produce one candidate that demon-strates at least two of the following attri-butes: academic excellence, outstanding community, business or entrepreneurial leadership and financial need.

Students can apply to become Nomi-nees to compete for the 2015 Schulich Leader Scholarships starting in October. For more information, visit schulichlead-ers.com.

The B.C. government has launched a new website to pre-pare parents for a possible con-tinuation of the teacher strike after Labour Day.

The website, bcparentinfo.ca, promises the latest bargain-ing updates on B.C.’s festering teacher dispute, and will act as a portal for parents registering to collect $40 a day for each child under 12 if the strike drags on.

It also offers links to online learning resources from school districts, which have prolifer-ated in recent years.

Talks have continued under a media blackout since mediator

Vince Ready met the two sides last week.

“Mr. Ready agreed to moni-tor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive,” the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and B.C. Public School Employers’ Asso-ciation said in a brief statement.

Negotiations broke off and a full-scale strike and lockout ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ste-phen Kelleher met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have

maintained that the BCTF’s ben-efit demands remain far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled con-tracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs support, with BCPSEA’s latest offer rejected by the union and the latest of a series of court actions sched-uled for this fall.

Ready’s last involvement in the long-running series of teacher disputes was as an industrial inquiry commissioner in 2007. At that time he recom-mended that a senior provincial official be involved in talks along with an independent mediator.

Local volunteers with the B.C. Transplant Society are hitting the streets to encourage more people to become organ donors.

Erika Kanczula, a Sid-ney resident and vol-unteer with B.C. Trans-plant said there are roughly 10 people on the Saanich Peninsula waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

“As of June, only 38 per cent of the resi-dents on the Saanich Peninsula were regis-tered as donors,” Kanc-zula said, adding that there are 473 critically ill people in the prov-ince waiting for a vital organ.

“In the case of some-one waiting for a dou-ble lung transplant, it was a 10-month wait

time in 2011, and a per-son only goes on the list when they are in a very ill state. We need to get that waiting time down,” she said.

Kanczula said that many people are touched by organ transplant, even locally.

“There are 13 people in Sidney that have had a transplant and 14 in North Saanich. At some point in their lives, most people will be touched by the need for someone they know to have a transplant,” she said.

To that end, Kanc-zula and a team of vol-unteers are hitting the streets in Sidney to rally more people to sign up and become organ donors.

The group will have their B.C. Transplant booth set up at Bea-con Park this Sunday,

Aug. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. during Sidney Summer Sounds as well as at the Sidney Street Market on Thursday, Aug 28 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“In this current time we are always looking

for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. What could be a bet-ter way to make an everlasting statement than by passing on your healthy parts to another human being.

As we say, live life and pass it on.”

For more informa-tion or to register visit transplant.bc.ca.

More organ donors are neededLocal B.C. Transplant volunteers hitting the streets to rally more donors

Things to know about becoming an organ donor:Each human being has the opportunity to help up to 75 different

people and save or extend the lives of as many as seven people with organ donations. In British Columbia, in order to do this people must register for organ and other types of donation at transplant.bc.ca.

Kanczula said the importance of discussing organ donation with family members cannot be overlooked.

“You are better to have this discussion before you are in a situation that you cannot answer for yourself,” Kanczula said.

“It may be uncomfortable, but if you want your wishes known, your family needs to know. For parents, remember to register your children up to the age of 18. You hope your child is never in this situation but you are better to have this discussion with your partner in advance.”

Kanczula continued to say that there there is no age limit for organ donations and people can register even if they have an illness or dis-ease.

“The assessment for organ donation will happen only when you are in a situation where you will not survive,” she explained.

To register, visit transplant.bc.ca.

Independent engi-neering inspections have been ordered for Mount Polley mine near Williams Lake and nearly 100 other mine tailings ponds with per-mits across the prov-ince, with reports to be complete by the end of January.

Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett announced the dual reviews Monday. The Mount Polley investiga-tion is to be complete by Jan. 31 and will be done concurrently with the B.C. government’s legally required probes by B.C.’s chief inspec-tor of mines and the environment ministry, which looks at the lon-ger-term effects of the Aug. 4 tailings spill.

Bennett said costs will be covered by Imperial Metals for Mount Polley and by all operators of mines with permits to operate nearly 100 tailings facili-ties in B.C.

“Certainly in the last 40 years there’s no evidence of a tailings dam breach in British Columbia, but rare or not, it happened, and so the public’s confi-dence I think is shaken” Bennett said at a news conference in Vancou-

ver. “That’s why we need to get these three experts involved as quickly as we’re getting them involved.”

The Mount Polley panel includes UBC mine engineering pro-fessor Dirk Van Zyl, U.S. consulting engineer Steven Vick, whose earlier investigations included the 2005 New Orleans levee breach that followed Hurri-cane Katrina, and Nor-bert Morgenstern, an Alberta civil engineer-ing professor who has worked on 140 mine projects.

Bennett said the panel was chosen with approval of the Wil-liams Lake and Soda Creek Indian Bands, and their report will be made available to the band councils at the same time as govern-ment.

Re: Sidney spot zone scrap, PNR, Aug. 15.

Given that I have had serious doubts about the active rejection of constructive criticism from the community by the Sidney council this year I was pleased to read your article ‘Sidney spot zone scrapped’.

Finally some real leadership and response to real concerns raised by citizens.

We have a good OCP with clearly designated zoning and developers should abide by the plan.

Certainly we need to encourage small units, financially accessible to young first time homebuyers but spot zoning, as Mayor Cross pointed out, is a slippery slope.

Let’s hope this newly found back-bone will endure when other devel-opers come knocking and it is not just an election stunt.

Stay strong Councillors!

Welcome to Sidney, a wonderful place

Re: Coming to Sidney, Letters, PNR, Aug. 15.

Welcome to Sidney, Merle and Katie Kroeker, you’re just the type of citizens we need to combat the small but publicly negative group that seems determined to undermine everything that the

present and past councils have done to establish Sidney as both a desirable place to live and as a place in which one can successfully own and operate a profitable business.

Your comment that “the people here are passionate, intelligent and welcoming” echoes what those who become actively involved in this community as volunteers, elected representatives and service minded businesses accept as fact.

Your landscaping business will undoubtedly expose you to all areas of Sidney and no doubt you’ll soon realize, if not already, that there is much more to this community than simply Beacon Avenue.

Missing the mark on climate change

I have enjoyed Peter Dolezal’s financial columns in the News Review very much.

In his recent column extolling the oil sands (Aug. 13), however, he seems to ignore one significant fact.

That is the link between increased burning of fossil fuels and climate change.

The federal government massively subsidizes the fossil fuel industry, to the tune of $1.5 billion per year.

Imagine what even half of that subsidy re-directed to green energy development and distribution would do to reduce Canada’s carbon footprint.

The price of electricity generated by solar and wind has been dropping significantly.

These cost reductions would be even more dramatic if federal subsidies for alternative energy were increased.

Other benefits would be the gradual phasing down of the tar sands, the reduction in pollution of air, land, and waters and the improvement of our economy by growing Canadian jobs in the green energy sector.

Better this than exporting our fossil fuels, which doesn’t encourage importing nations to develop their own green energy and lower their own carbon footprint.

rgan donation isn’t for everyone. Depending on religious beliefs or personal preference, some people choose to not donate their organs after death. But for those of us

who don’t have any stipulations about organ donation, the question remains — why don’t more of us register to become donors?

According to B.C. Transplant, there is a critical shortage of organs available for transplant not only in B.C., but all over the world.

In 2013, B.C. had the highest living donor rate in the country of 28 per million and 14.5 per million in deceased donor rate – equalling the national average. There were 346 transplants and the number of organ donors (130 living and 67 deceased) increased as well. But the numbers are still very low compared to the number of people that die in the province each year.

Volunteers with B.C. Transplant say some people still aren’t aware they even have to register to become a donor.

Fifteen years ago, the method of becoming a donor included simply putting a dot on your drivers licence.

Now, that method is no longer valid and people wishing to become donors must register directly with B.C. Transplant.

After death, each person has the ability to help up to 75 different people and save or extend the lives of as many as seven people by becoming an organ donor.

Currently there are 473 people in B.C. waiting for vital organs, approximately 10 of which live somewhere on the Saanich Peninsula.

Many of these people will wait years for an organ to become available, and for some it may be too late.

As of June, only 38% of people living on the Saanich Peninsula had registered as donors.

The numbers speak for themselves. More of us need to step up and take the few minutes it requires to register as an organ donor at www.transplant.bc.ca.

You could end up saving a life right in your own backyard.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder

Why is heart attack the num-ber one killer in this coun-

try? Ninety-nine percent of doc-tors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mor-tar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thou-sand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took ret-inal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.

Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to re-fuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.

I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astro-naut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications. I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a com-bination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty phar-macies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors.

As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.

An abrupt change in the weather t h i s

afternoon. This morn-ing was bright and beau-tiful — warm too — but now the skies are grey. The wind has come up and it is almost chilly. Is it the first sign of fall, or was that yesterday, when there was a mist on my open bedroom window?

I know it is inevitable, summer can’t go on forever, but it seems a little early to be think-ing about leaves chang-ing colour, sweaters needed by late after-noon and my summer tan fading to a sickly yellow.

I had something nice to look forward this week. My friend Judy took me to see her hydrangea (it is a pic-ture…a huge shrub of many hues, from pale blue to vibrant purple) and I was able to bring home three fat blooms to dry for a winter bou-quet. Judy said I could have as many as I wanted, but three was great!

I have stripped off all the leaves and set the

stems in a tall pitcher of water. Soon I’ll reduce the water level to about an inch, and put their container in the dark utility room and leave it there until the water has dried up, at which time (if I remember it correctly from days of yore) the blooms should also be dry.

When this has hap-pened I’ll store them (standing upright), in a vase, in a dark clothes closet until fall when, hopefully, they may be arranged in a nice con-tainer and displayed with delight in the liv-ing room. Thank you, Judy! It will remind me of summer when it starts to rain in earnest!

My beautiful dark red amaryllis blooms (three

of them on one stem) out on the balcony are quite spectacular, but I’m kind of sorry that the plant has chosen to flower in mid-summer instead of waiting until about Christmas time, when it has bloomed other years.

There won’t be time now for it to rest and regain its strength in just a few months, so I guess I’ll have to save up and buy another bulb this fall for another wonderful Yule-time display.

What am I doing

thinking about Christ-mas, when it is still summer? Maybe my body is trying to cool off by thinking about December.

Actually I don’t want to think about Christ-mas, as much as I love it, it is a season full of turmoil and too many things to do.

The summer, at least, is a season to relax in the sunshine.

Further tests of mine tailings spilled down a creek bed from the Mount Polley mine will deter-mine whether the metal-bearing sand will be removed or left where it is, Energy and Mines Min-ister Bill Bennett said this week.

The first lab tests on sediment samples at the mouth of Hazeltine Creek showed that while the material that poured down to the creek mouth in Quesnel Lake isn’t a health hazard to humans, its iron and copper content are above federal and provincial standards for aquatic life.

Bennett said it’s encouraging that the first sedi-ment results did not show presence of arsenic, mercury or cadmium, toxic elements found in mine rock or used in mine processing.

A comparison sample of compact sediment from the mouth of nearby Raft Creek, not affected by the Aug. 4 tailings pond breach, also tested above sediment quality guidelines for iron. The environment ministry says mineral deposits that attract mine development often have naturally occurring metal concentrations much higher than other areas.

“What we need to do is test those sediments to determine whether it’s better environmentally to leave them there or to try to collect them and get them out of the creek bed and get them out of the creek mouth in Quesnel Lake,” Bennett said. “Before you start dredging lake bottoms and trying to clean up the bottom of a creek bed to get the sand out, you’ve got to determine what the risk is first, and that’s the phase that we’re in right now.”

Interior Health is reviewing water and sediment sample results and a long-term monitoring and remediation plan has been submitted by the mine.

On July 29, I had knee surgery at Saanich Pen-insula Hospital. I had fabulous care from my two nurses Penny and Jasmine. They explained every-thing so well which made me so calm for my first ever surgery.

I sincerely appreciated their attention to detail and for keeping me informed on how things would unfold during my stay there. Also, a big thanks to Dr. James Stone and his team for fixing my knee. Big bouquets to you all. Lorna Paterson

I have been a member of the Peninsula Base-ball and Softball Association at Rotary Park for ten years. I have now been involved in three Provincial Baseball Championships held at the facility includ-ing the most recent Mosquito A (nine year old) Championship held July 31 to Aug. 3.

The Town of Sidney parks staff maintain the park and have always had the facility looking very good for these championships in past years. However, this year Chris Wallace and the rest of the parks crew that worked with him whipping the park into shape did their best work yet.

The facility looked better than I have ever seen

and it did not go unnoticed by the 130+ families from throughout the province that descended on Rotary Park for the four days of competition.

The compliments our tournament committee received were endless. A huge thank you from everyone at PBSA to Chris and his crew for making our special weekend even more so.

A huge bouquet to the volunteers with the Torque Masters Car Club. With the guidance of Cam McLennan this group of volunteers assisted in organizing, directing and essentially making our parade and show n’ shine this past weekend an absolute success.

Thank you kindly for all of your assistance, we are most grateful for the many hours that Cam and his crew put into our event.

Sidney Volunteer Firefighters’ 100th Year Society

A big thank you to someone who is literally an angel in your community. We had ridden our tan-dem bike to Sidney from Victoria to catch the Washington State Ferry the day there was no ferry, due to diversion of the ferry to the Seattle service. We were literally stuck with no way home. Plane travel was impossible due to cost and having a bike in tow. We also couldn’t afford the extra time waiting for a day for the ferry to return.

Nicholas who works at the terminal assessed our needs and within minutes had offered us a ride in his van back to Victoria with just enough time to catch the Clipper to Seattle. He took no money and he was very gracious for someone his age.

There may be issues and discussions about this ferry service in the political arena, but when it comes down to people who represent the ferry and your town, please use this example as one of grace and amazing hospitality.

DrivewayCanada.ca | Welcome to the driver’s seat Welcome to the driver’s seat

Mom’s taxi now closer to a family limo than a seven-seat vanHow many of today’s NHL stars made those very early morning trips to junior practice in a minivan?Of course, we will never know for sure but you can bet the answer is in the 100s, judging by the tens of thousands of kids, enrolled in hockey, soccer and count-less other activities, who have been transported for the past 30 years in these people movers, pioneered Chrysler.Virtually every auto maker has a version though in recent years, with the ex-plosion of sport utility and crossover vehicles there has been a trend away from the vehicle dubbed ‘mom’s taxi’ in the popular media. At first, that was an affection-ate moniker but of late, it’s come to be a disparaging term for these very efficient family carriers now described as multi-purpose vehicles. No, they’re not leading edge in looks for the most part but surely that’s not why people still buy them in goodly numbers. Minivans are utilitarian but it’s also true to say that today’s iterations are no longer glorified vans with seats. They come close to driving like sedans and the higher end models are a step away

from limo status. The loaded 2014 Grand Caravan SXT version I drove recently certainly could lay claims to be much more than mom’s taxi. Premium cloth seats were inviting and supportive but the rear seating is perhaps the more interesting for those with aforemen-tioned early morning drive duties. The stow’n’go seats are ingenious, turning the Caravan quickly with the flick of a wrist from a seven-seater into . . . . dare I say . . . a van if

desired. Power sliding doors and liftgate complete the convenience package. An area where the Caravan has made giant leaps is right upfront. The one-piece instrument panel is easy on the eye and easy to operate. An optional “super” centre console builds on the functionality, providing a lot of storage.Stepping outside there’s an interesting innovation called the Stow ‘n Place roof rack system, which enables the stowing of the roof bows into the side rails when not in use. There is an obvious cosmetic improvement but that would be a frivolous consideration. The ability

to stow the roof bows a reduction in aerodynamic drag, wind buffeting and thus better overall efficiency.Under the hood is the truly tried and tested Pentastar 3.6-litre V6, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. This power combination pumps out 283 horsepower but still remains frugal when it comes to fuel economy – 12.2/7.9 L/100 kms.Driving in town with such a large vehicle is not so much of challenge as you might expect. The excellent vision provided by large windows helps when parking in those tight supermarket spots. Stop/go traffic on Highway One was not fun and certainly spoiled the fuel

economy promise. That said, once rolling on the freeway, the Caravan hits its stride and return to sipping gas rather than gulping. The basic Caravan is anything but basic in its equipment tally and starts at $27,995. The tester was loaded to the gunwales with every bell and whistle and came in at $43,580. Take out the basic for the test drive then start adding the features you want until you run up against budget wall.‘Mom’s taxi’ is going to be around for a while yet and that’s good news for sports oriented families and maybe even the National Hockey League.

At home on Serengeti and BC backroadsIan Harwood

The Land Rover LR4 was not what I was expecting, instead it was a pleasant surprised.Looks:I’m used to seeing bulky and cumbersome old Land Rovers on the back roads, spinning out rocks while attempting a hill climb and shaking the occupants to bits! Fast forward to today’s version of the Land Rover and you will find an outstanding front end that is easily recognized with the signature grille and projector style headlights. Also feature are those trend setting side vents on the front fenders, much copied in the aftermarket. And the large rear glass panels that extend up into the roof line make the overall appear-ance very clean looking and unique. Optional 20 inch rims are worth the upcharge. In the cab:My first impression after climbing into the cab was one of disbelief. I did not expect that level of comfort. The sight lines are amazing and the blind spot was almost non-existent. The rear seats had plenty of room for adults and the cargo area was adequate. The heated leather wrapped steering wheel featured all the controls one needed to operate the equipment without distraction. The front and rear seats are heated. Power tilt/slide front sunroof and two sec-tions of glass covering the

roof area over the 2nd and third row seats allow plenty of natural light in. Safety:There are six airbags, including side curtain, side thorax and front passenger with occupant detection system, four-channel all terrain ABS, electronic brake assist and an electronic parking brake. Blind spot monitoring, closing-vehicle sensing and reverse traffic detection systems have also been added.Power:The engine is a 340hp 3.0 litre supercharged V6 coupled with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. This transmission features Command Shift and sport mode that actively responds to your driving habits and road conditions by recon-figuring the shift patterns for optimum drivability in all situations and is mated with a single speed transfer case or an optional 2 speed electronically controlled transfer case. Stop-start technology helps to improve the fuel econo-my. Four wheel electronic traction control, hill descent control and four-corner air suspension with terrain response not only make this vehicle manouevre well on the road, but also make it fully capable of tackling the back roads too.Roadworthy:This is the first time I have driven the Land Rover LR4 and visions of driving a boxy SUV through the Serengeti looking at exotic animals came to mind. I

was pleasantly surprised at the comfort level and the drivability of this vehicle.Verdict:This luxurious vehicle has comfort and performance levels that should be expected at this price point. This is a heavy vehicle and fully loaded with passen-gers and gear it is not going to get great fuel economy, but for some reason I don’t think that matters.Sticker price:Price as tested $70,[email protected]

Striving to be at one with your steedAlexandra Straub

Bryan Hourt, Acura’s assistant large project leader of vehicle performance, tells of his upbringing on a ranch in northwest Nebraska, he talks about horse power. He explains that when you connect with the animal, getting on with life’s daily tasks is much easier. If you’re out of sync with your horse, you work twice as hard since you have to think for both yourself and it. In one situation, you enjoy yourself and get more done. The other is exhausting. If you’re in a car that you don’t connect with, everyday routine can be more arduous than it has to be. Its quirks rub you the wrong way. But, if you love your car and know exactly what it’s going to

do in any given situation life on the road is so much better.Enter the 2015 Acura TLX that blends horsepower, with grace and poise. When I slipped inside the cabin of the new TLX, pushed the start button, selected the “D” button and drove off, confidence was apparent from the start. It’s a vehicle designed with performance in mind from the ground up. Its chassis features a newly designed four-wheel independent suspension system to help you enjoy country roads or urban life. It’s tame at slower speeds – and very good table manners – but has the ability to take on higher speed challenges without breaking a sweat.I might have taken a corner or two relatively swiftly, but the steering feel, and its ability to maintain composure in

a turn was impressive. Each model comes with Acura’s Integrat-ed Dynamics System that allows drivers to customize their driving experience through four selectable modes. Depend-ing on the setting, Acura says, “IDS will adjust power-steering effort, throttle response, transmission shift logic, HVAC system operation, and the control logic for either the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems. The new Sport+ mode unlocks the full performance potential of the TLX with the most aggressive settings.”Whether you want that extra bit of gusto, or you are driving around town, the TLX has a mode for you.Three TLX models will be offered. The first comes with a 2.4-litre, i-VTEC inline-4 engine with an eight-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (8DCT) with torque

converter, and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). It has an output of 206 horse-power and 182 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s a trim with a 3.5-litre, i-VTEC V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission and P-AWS. That produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, and gets 10 more hp and 13 more lb-ft of torque versus the 2014 TL 3.5-litre engine.Lastly, there’s the TLX SH-AWD with next-generation Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive, available only with the 3.5-litre, 290 horsepower V6 and nine-speed automatic. Eventually, both the TSX and TL will be succeeded by the TLX. It makes sense. Dimensionally, the TLX will be positioned between the ILX entry-luxury sedan and the RLX flagship Acura sedan.

There’s room for five, 405L of cargo room around back and places to store personal items.Sure there are sportier offerings in the segment. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of them. So is the Audi A4. But what works for the TLX is its understated elegance. It’s pleasant to drive, and with a centre stack stripped of unnecessary buttons making it more user friendly. I’d describe my experience in both the 4 and 6 cylinder TLXs to be pleasant. Not the bad pleasant, the kind of adjective you use to describe a mother in-law or awkward coworker. But pleasant in the way that it’s quiet, does the job well and is a pleasure to drive. The 2015 TLX has a starting MSRP for the four-cylinder engine at $34,990.

SIDNEY — The Mary Winspear Centre is wel-coming international Broadway and London West End legend Peter Karrie, starring in The Phantom of the Opera Returns later this month.

The show takes place Sunday, Aug. 31 at the Charlie White Theatre.

Karrie, hailing from Wales, is a true ‘Phan-tom’ and has portrayed the role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera around the world. He was even named The World’s Most Popular Phantom by the World-wide Phantom of the Opera Appreciation Society.

Karrie was made an honorary Canadian citizen upon complet-ing his “Phantom” role in Vancouver where he preformed for nearly a decade.

Joining him on stage for the show at the Win-

spear will be soprano Melina Moore (playing

Christine).Moore, who is origi-

nally from Argentina (now living in Vernon), studied at The Juil-liard School in New York City. Moore now frequently performs with symphonies and orchestras throughout the province and has been a featured artist on CBC Radio Two.

“The Phantom of the Opera Returns is a mov-ing concert experience geared toward an inti-mate audience,” said Carey Salvador from the Winspear Cenre, adding that the show on Aug. 31 will mark the three-year musical collaboration of Karrie and Moore.

The show takes place Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. and tickets are $24.15 (available at the Mary Winspear box office by calling 250-656-0275 or online at marywinspear.ca.)

SAANICH — Drink-able Jazz headlined the First Unitarian Church of Victoria’s launch of an all new Jazz Vespers program this past June leading the way to a dynamic fall schedule.

Introducing the quar-tet and providing the spoken word elements, the Reverend Shana Lynngood will continue the program into the fall season.

The series takes place on the second Sunday of each month, alternating between the church’s outreach loca-tion at the University of Victoria’s Interfaith Chapel and the Sanc-tuary on West Saanich Road near Red Barn Market (5575 West Saa-nich Rd.)

On Sunday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. in the UVic Chapel, Jazz Vespers will feature the unique quartet Strings of Note (all strung out on acoustic jazz) with the theme of “Changes.”

For more information and full schedule con-tact Lynngood at 250-744-2601. — Submitted

Asking the right questions and being realistic about the ideal dream house are some things first-time home buyers need to be aware of, says local realtor Jeff Bryan.

“First-time home buyers need to understand all costs associated with buying a house,” said Bryan, real estate agent with RE/MAX Camosun in Sidney.

Someone might get pre-approved for a $500,000 mortgage but might forget to factor in strata fees, for example.

“They won’t think of those strata fees as part of their qualification pro-cess for getting a mortgage, but it is,” said Bryan.

“You’re assuming you can buy for $500,000, but if there is a strata fee, you can’t understand all the costs associated.”

Getting pre-approved for a mort-gage is the first thing buyers should do before looking at listings, said Bryan.

“A lot of times people will be sur-prised at what they’re actually quali-fied for, especially now with interest rates being at historic lows,” said Bryan.

“What people can qualify for is usually a very pleasant surprise.”

However, being approved for a $500,000 house does not mean buy-ers should be looking to max out their budget. Bryan advises spend-ing no more than 10 per cent under the approved amount.

“You don’t want to be house poor,” said Bryan.

“Yes you’re approved at that level, but that could mean Kraft Dinner and tuna for the next five years.”

One mistake many first-time home buyers make is falling for a house in need of lots of repairs.

“First-time buyers should be wary of the fixer-upper unless they are qualified to do the work themselves, because that can turn into a real money pit,” he said.

“All of a sudden you’re $100,000 in [debt], living in a crummy little

house because you can’t afford to fix it up.”

Another common mistake made by home buyers is not working with a real estate agent, even though it doesn’t cost them anything, said Bryan. Buyers do not need to pay realtors commission, unlike sellers.

“Realtors make it look like a sim-ple process,” said Bryan.

“But there’s lots of things the real-tor does behind the scenes to pro-tect the buyer.”

Realtors may also help buyers find out about properties for sale before they become public.

“We find out about listings a cou-ple days before they go on the mar-ket,” said [email protected]

SPORTSNORTH SAANICH — It was

an exciting weekend in Kam-loops for Piranhas athletes at the 2014 B.C. Summer Swimming Association Pro-vincial Championships.

The small contingent of only 22 swimmers were able to crack the top 10 in over-all point standings, compet-ing against teams with over double their numbers.

Throughout the three day competition, Piranhas were turning heads with their out-standing performances.

Nate Truong (Div 2) raced to four individual gold med-als (50 freestyle, 100 free-style, 50 backstroke, 50 but-terfly) and helped his team-mates Gosha Iazvenko, Hal-don Craig and Paiden Jenkin-son secure a bronze medal in the 4x50 medley relay (Div 3).

Caleb Stewart (Div 5) showed his freestyle domi-nance, bringing home gold in both freestyle races. His training partner Colton Craig surprised the field by out-touching Stewart in 50 butterfly, earning a silver medal by 0.03 seconds.

Cole Stewart (Div 7), didn’t find himself on the podium but did manage to break a 24 year old Piranhas club record in the 100 free-

style. Abby Phillips (Div 3) also broke a record from 1990, but in the 50 butterfly, shaving off 0.55 seconds.

Nearly all of the Div 6 girls club records were smashed this weekend thanks to some incredible swims from Erin Jackson and Tabitha Craig.

Jackson ran down the field in her 200 IM, moving up three spots on the last 50 meters to earn silver and later on dropped over two seconds in her 100 breast to win gold in a nail bitter fin-ish.

Tabitha Craig earned her first provincial medals of her life by winning silver in the 50 and 100 freestyle and smashing two of her own club records in the process to fend off an extremely competitive field.

A strong point for the team was the relays which are worth double the points.

The Div 5 boys team of Caleb Stewart, Colton Craig, Liam Ayres and Josh Phillips won bronze in both the free-style and medley relays.

Div 6 girls team of Tabitha Craig, Erin Jackson, Lauren Mosher and Sophie Ayres won silver in the freestyle relay while Craig, Jackson, and Mosher swam with Emma Goodwin in the Div 7 medley relay to bring home a gold medal.

The Piranhas will be hang-ing up their towels for Sep-tember, but will be back training in October for win-ter maintenance. Registra-tion will take place  Sunday, Oct. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Panorama Recreation.
