2 The Ribbit Report — October 2014 | pennycreekpta.weebly.com/

Meet your Penny Creek PTA Board for the 2014-2015 School Year

President: Alisa Yee is our PTA President for the second year. She has two children, Colin who is in Mrs. Wood’s class and Lehua who is in Mrs. Judd’s class. When Alisa has spare time, she enjoys reading, taking outdoor walks, and travelling or going on outings with her family. If you ask her what is on her mind most of the time, she will tell you it is what kind of good food she will eat next! Alisa went to the University of Oregon (Go

Ducks!) for her Bachelor’s and San Francisco State University where she got her Master’s. Alisa would love to travel to New Zealand some day in the near future. She really likes that Penny Creek Elementary has an amazing staff. Contact info: [email protected]

Vice-President: Andrea Rosen is our Vice-President this year. It is her 4th year serving on the Penny Creek PTA board. She has two boys, Jacob who is in Mrs. Wood’s class and Ethan who is in Mrs. Rogers’ class. When Andrea is not volunteering at the school you will more than likely find her training for something. This past summer she ran her first marathon! She received her Bachelor’s degree from Central Washington University (GO

WILDCATS)! Andrea has enjoyed being on the PTA board because she feels it is an ad-ditional support system to the administration of the school and because she loves bringing new and exciting ideas to the school community. Contact info: [email protected]

VP of Fundraising: Cora Bocayuva Gefter is in her second year as our VP of Fundraising. She has two children. Rafael is in Mrs. Womack’s class and she has a daughter named Tatiana who is a freshman at Jackson High School. When Cora has spare time she loves to travel, visit museums, and old libraries. Cora hopes to visit China someday. She got a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Universidade Candido Mendes, Rio de Janeiro

- Brazil. Cora said she wanted to be on the PTA board so she could help bring back some of the programs her family enjoyed when her daughter was a Penny Creek Frog! Contact info: [email protected]

Co-VPs of Volunteers: Shanley Halvorson is in her second year on the PTA board. She has a son named Chase in Mrs. MacDonald’s class and Austin in Mrs. Lobe’s class. She graduated from WSU and bleeds crimson! (Go Cougs!) When Shanley is not volunteering at the school or working as a nurse you will find her reading, running, camping, or going to Boston’s Trivia Nights! Someday Shanley would love to go to

the Grand Canyon. “One thing I love about Penny Creek is the staff and Dr. Golden! We are so fortunate to have such great teachers and a principal who support the PTA like they do and take my son’s allergies seriously to help keep him safe. I appreciate it immensely!” Contact info: [email protected] or cell# 206-799-6618.Katie Wilson is in her first year on the PTA board. She has a daughter, Natalie in Mr. Jacobsens’ class and Steven who has Mrs. Daniels. When she has spare time she likes to watch the Seahawks, fish, craft and read. Katie is a Husky. She went to the University of Washington where she got a BS in Medical Laboratory Science and Microbiology. Katie decided to join the board this year because she enjoys event planning; meeting people and she wanted to help make the year memorable for the students. Contact info: [email protected]

Treasurer: Linda Evans is our Treasurer for the second year! She is a grandparent to Hailey who is in Mrs. Womack’s class and Hunter who goes to Eisenhower Middle School. When Linda is not managing the budget for the PTA she loves to volunteer, bake, read, and watch movies and TV. Linda has spent over 5 years on the Penny Creek PTA board and it all started because her daughter volunteered her! Linda is hoping

one of these days to either skydive and/or visit Tahiti. Last year Linda became a Golden Acorn winner due to all her volunteering she does to make Penny Creek and the surrounding area better. Contact info: [email protected]

Your Penny Creek PTA is here for our students, and because of that, we like to try and get them involved in our newsletter. This month we asked a few students, “What were you looking forward to about coming back to school?” and these were some of the answers....

Sofia: “Meeting my new teacher and seeing old friends”

Diego: “Seeing my friends again”

Kai: “Seeing my friends after the summer”

Treasurer Assistant: Kristi Valdez is helping with the extensive Treasurer duties this year with the hopes she will want to take the whole job on next year! She has one daughter, Ava, who is in Mrs. Daniels’ class. When Kristi has free time you will find her visiting family and taking her dog on family hikes in the area. In the future Kristi would love to travel the world, but until that time comes, she is happy to be on the PTA board so that she can make a

positive impact in the community and help participate in her daughter’s education. She really appreciates the positive environment that Dr. Golden has established at Penny Creek encour-aging growth and enrichment opportunities. Contact info: [email protected]

Secretary: Jessica Johnson is our Secretary this year. She has three boys that keep her very busy. They are: Lucas who is in Mrs. Willis’ class, Colby who goes to Kids at the Creek preschool and Oliver who is 1 years old. She loves spending time with her family and traveling when she can. Before joining the PTA board, Jessica was a teacher at Woodside Elementary. She went to Central Washington University and Lesley College. Someday she hopes to take a family

vacation to Australia! If you ask her what she loves most about Penny Creek, she is the first one to say, it is the sense of community. We are so happy that Jessica has chosen to be on the Penny Creek PTA board this year. Contact info: [email protected]

Board of Directors:Debbie Cresanti is spending her second year on the Board of Directors At-Large for the PTA. She has three children, Adam, who is in Ms. Dyer’s class, Jojo who attends Eisenhower Middle School and her daughter Jordan who is a student at Cascade High School. Debbie went to college in upstate New York and someday she would love to travel to Scotland and Ireland. If you ask Debbie why she continues to stay on the PTA board she would tell you, “I think it is important to give kids a good experience in school, and since money keeps getting cut for schools PTA is able to offer other experiences like art”. Contact info: [email protected]

Laurie Bowles is also on the Board of Directors At-Large for the PTA. She has a daughter named Rebecca in Mrs. Willis’ class and a son named Carter in Mrs. Kyser’s class. In her spare time she loves to “binge watch” shows on Netflix. Currently, she is watching all episodes of Magnum, PI! She has a B.S. in Elementary Education from Greenville College and someday she hopes to see the Pyramids. If you ask Laurie what she loves most about

Penny Creek she will tell you, “I’ve really appreciated the teachers and administration….they have been so supportive of my kids, and have been great at keeping communication open”. Contact info: [email protected] Wininger is the third member of the Board of Directors At-Large. She has 4 children that keep her constantly on her toes! Benjamin who has Mrs. Strong, Olivia who has Mrs. Daniels, Amanda who is at Gateway Middle School and Emily who is at Jackson High school. As you can see she doesn’t have much spare time. Most of the time you will find Lisa driving her kids to softball, soccer, cheer, basketball, and baseball. Before having children, Lisa went to Penn State University. A long time goal of Lisa is to take a fun family vacation to Hawaii! Besides being on the Board of Directors, Lisa also puts together our student directory and she is membership chair. Contact info: [email protected]

MEMBERSHIP NEWSThe winners are in for the football classroom contest! Here are the results: The first class to reach 30% was a tie between Mrs. Judd’s and Mrs. Wood’s classes. The first class to reach 60% was Mrs. Womack’s class. The first class to reach 100% was a tie between Ms. Daniels’s and Mrs. Lobe’s classes. Congratulations to these classrooms! Thank you to everyone that has joined the PTA! We have 534 members, and value your support! Questions regarding membership? Contact Lisa Wininger at [email protected].

NAME OUR MASCOT According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the meaning of a mascot is:

: a person, animal, or object adopted by a group as a symbolic figure especially to bring them good luck <the team had a mountain lion as their mascot>

As you know the mascot for Penny Creek is the FROG. Well, our frog does not have a name and your PTA thinks now is the time for the students of Penny Creek to give that frog a name! We need our students help to make this happen. Be-tween now and October 31st we would like to take ideas on what to name the Penny Creek Frog. It could be Frankie the Frog or Penny the Frog, whatever you think would be a great fit. We will take all ideas and suggestions and then the PTA board will narrow it down to three. At that time we will have classroom votes to decide on the name of our frog.

If you have any questions, please contact Andrea: [email protected]

STAR AWARD: TADPOLE CLUB Each month the Everett PTSA Council gives out Star Awards to its Local PTA’s for programs and events that showcase PTA work at its finest. In September, Penny Creek PTA received the first Star Award of the 2014-15 School Year for our Tadpole Club. The Tadpole Club’s purpose is to help Pre-K students transition into Kindergarten. This club was conceived by Laurie Bowles who did an excellent job of getting it started and putting together a successful program. Starting from Kinder-garten registration last year, these, once future and now present Frogs, partici-pated in a variety of activities that helped them and their families get acquainted with Penny Creek and members of our staff. Before the school year started they participated in a sample classes in PE and music, went to the Summer Library Days, made t-shirts for their specialist days and met the Kindergarten teaching team. This program has been noticed by many across our school district and at the Council and State PTA levels and is consid-ered a program to emulate by other PTAs. If you know of a family with an incoming Kindergartener for the 2015-16 school year, please make sure to let them know about this great program.

The 2014-15 Reflections theme is: “The world would be a better place if…” If you would be interested in leading this program, please contact Alisa Yee at [email protected] for more details. There is a training session on October 8th, so it would be great to have a lead in place before that day.

Rockin’ Recess Runners: The Rockin’ Recess Runners Lead sets up a schedule of parent /guardian volunteers to play music for our students during their Friday lunch recesses, weather permitting. Students will be encouraged to run around the “Frog Track,” dance to the music or simply enjoy themselves while listening to some of their favorite music. As a lead you will also be asked to know how to set-up and work the music system and train volunteers as needed. Depending on the weather, this activity may not take place until the Spring.

WATCH D.O.G.S. PROGRAM NEEDS YOU! Our Watch DOGS program has hit the ground running since school started but that doesn’t mean we don’t want more great male role models volunteering and spending the day with the student in your life. Ask any Dad who has participated in this great program and you’ll hear countless testimony of how much fun they had at school with their student and volunteering in the classroom. Not sure what Watch D.O.G.S. is? Watch D.O.G.S. is a national program that has been part of Penny Creek for many years. A K-12 program, invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer at least one day all day at their child’s/student’s school during the school year. Individuals sign up at a kick-off or in the office at any time throughout the school year. The program is overseen by a “Top Dog” volunteer who partners with the school administrator to coordinate scheduling and identify opportunities for Watch D.O.G.S. to provide assistance at the school. Watch DOG volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher’s guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling. For more information or if you are wanting to sign-up to vol-unteer please contact your “Top Dog” program lead JeRae McCoy @ [email protected] or Laurie Bowles @ [email protected] Please remember to sign up by Thursday of the week PRIOR to the day you would like to volunteer to allow staff to plan for your participation. Also all volunteers at Penny Creek Elementary need to have current volunteer approval through the Everett School District prior to volunteering. You can take care of the background check at https://jobs2.everett.k12.wa.us/winocular/volunteer/
