Reading Room, The British Museum, Bloomsbury Penny,likemanyjournalistsatthetime,carriesoutherresearchinthereadingroom.It’slocatedintheBritishMuseumwhichwasfoundedintheeighteenthcentury,thecurrentbuildingwasconstructedin1854.TheiconiccircularreadingroomwaspartoftheBritishLibrarywithinthemuseumandwasinusefor140years:from1857until1997.Duringthattimeitwasalsousedafilminglocationandhasbeenreferencedinmanyworksoffiction.WhentheBritishLibrarymovedtoanewlocationin1997,thereadingroomwas
restoredandsubsequentlyusedforexhibitionspacebutithasbeenclosedsince2014.It’sbeenrecentlyannouncedthatitwillreopenanddisplaysomeofthemuseum’spermanentcollections,butit’snotclearwhenthatwillbe.

The Museum Tavern, Bloomsbury OppositeTheBritishMuseumistheMuseumTavernwherePennyandJamesenjoyadrinktogetherfromtimetotime.It’sawell-preservedVictorianpubandmuchofthecurrentpub(includingitsname)datesbackto1855.ApubwasfirstbuiltonthissiteintheeighteenthcenturyCelebritydrinkersherearesaidtohaveincludedArthurConanDoyleandKarlMarx.

Russell Square, Bloomsbury Thissquarewaslaidoutin1804andtakesitsnamefromthesurnameoftheEarlsandDukesofBedfordwhodevelopedthearea.Manyoftheoriginalinhabitantswerewealthymeninthelegalprofession.
ThesedaysRussellSquareisapopulargreenspaceincentralLondonwithacafe,fountainandoneofLondon'sgreencabmanshelterswhichwerebuiltacrossthecitybetween1875and1914.

Midland Grand Hotel, King’s Cross ThisbreathtakinglybeautifulgothicbuildingopenedastheluxuryMidlandGrandHotelatStPancrasstationinthe1870s.However,whenthetwentiethcenturyarriveditbegantofalloutoffavourwithguestsastheroomshadnobathrooms.Thehotelfellderelictinthe1980sandsatemptyformanyyearsuntilaredevelopmentandareopeningin2011.It’snowtheupmarketStPancrasRenaissanceLondonHotel.

Euston Station Thisonceimpressiverailwaystationopenedin1837.Itwasnotableforitsbeautiful,classicallystyledGreatHallinwhichastatueofGeorgeStephenson-whotheVictorianscalled'FatherofRailways'–oncestood.AttheentrancetothestationstoodEustonArchwhichwasalarge,impressivestructurebuiltofsandstone.
Thestationwasdemolishedandredevelopedinthe1960stotheupsetofmany.ThebrokenuppiecesofEustonArchwereusedtolinethebottomofacanalinEastLondon.Anumberofthepieceswereraisedfromthecanalin2009andplansarebeingdiscussedtohavethearchrebuiltaspartofanupgradeofEustonstationin2026.

Fleet Street PublishingbeganinFleetStreetinthe1500sandbythetwentiethcenturythestreetwasthehuboftheBritishpress.Bythe1980sthenewspaperindustrywasoutgrowingtheold,crampedofficesonFleetStreetandmostpublicationsbeganleavingforlarger,moremodernpremises.Thelastjournalistsleftin2016whentheSundayPostcloseditsoffice.
FleetStreet’schurch,StBrides,retainsitsstrongassociationwithjournalism.Thejournalistsmayhavegonebutthepubsandbarstheyoncefrequentedarestillpopularwithworkersandtourists.

Twinings tea shop, The Strand Thisshophasbeeninitscurrentlocationforoverthreehundredyears.ThomasTwiningwasateamerchantwhobeganservingteainhiscoffeeshopatthebeginningofthe18thcentury.TwiningsteaisabrandwhichisstillgoingstrongtodayandhasheldaRoyalWarrantsincethecompanybegansupplyingQueenVictoriawithteain1837-ithassuppliedeverymonarchsince.JaneAustenapparentlywroteinherdiarythathermothersenthertoLondontobuyTwiningstea.TwiningsisLondon’slongeststandingratepayerwiththecompanyhavingoccupiedthesamesiteonTheStrandsince1706.

St Bartholomew’s Hospital, West Smithfield Thishospitalremainsonthesiteitwasfoundedoninthetwelfthcenturyandsomeofthecurrentbuildingsdatebacktotheeighteenthcentury.Bart’shasalong-heldreputationforteachingandresearch,buildingsforthemedicalschoolwereconstructedinthenineteenthcenturyandamongthesewasthepathologymuseum.

St Giles StGilesRookeryoccupiedanareaofLondonwhichisnowpartofmoderndayHolborn,CoventGardenandthetheatredistrictinLondon’sWestEnd.ItwasalreadybecominganovercrowdedpovertystrickenareaintheseventeenthcenturyandbythefirsthalfofthenineteenthcenturyitwasoneoftheworstslumsinBritain.WilliamHogarthimmortalisedthearea’slawlessnessanddepravityinaseriesofetchings,oneofthebestknownbeingGinLane.BythelatenineteenthcenturyVictoriansocialreformandphilanthropyhad
gainedstrongmomentumandattemptsweremadetoclearandrebuildLondon’sslums.AreassuchasStGilesattractedmanyfromthemiddle-classeswhoeitherwishedtohelptheinhabitantsortourthepovertystrickenstreetsoutofcuriosity.Evangelicalmissionariesbeganestablishingthemselvesinslumdistrictsfromthe
1830sonwardsandbytheendofthenineteenthcenturytherewerehundredsofmissionarieshelpingslumdwellerswithpracticalneedsaswellasspiritual.ThechurchofStGiles-in-the-Fieldswasrebuiltintheeighteenthcenturyandstill
standstoday.SevenDialshasretaineditslayoutandcharacterdespitesomeredevelopment,andNealStreetisapopularshoppingstreetintheCoventGardenarea.Neal’sYard,famousfortheorganicbeautycompanywhichusesitsname,providesagoodideaofhowthenarrowcrookedstreetswouldhaveoncelooked.Althoughthesedaysthebuildingsarebrightlycolouredandhousetrendyeateriesandboutiques.

Bow Street Police Station and Magistrate’s Court Themagistrate’scourtwasestablishedin1740inwhatwasthenacrime-riddenarea.ItbecamehometoLondon’sfirstpoliceforce,theBowStreetRunnersin1749.Inthe1830sthenewMetropolitanPoliceServicebuiltastationonthesiteandanewmagistrate’scourtopenedin1881.FamousandvarieddefendantshereincludedOscarWilde,theKrayTwins,DrCrippen,BertandRussell,GeneralPinochetandEmmelineandChristabelPankhurst.Thecourtclosedin2006andthebuildingstillstandsoppositeCoventGarden’s
RoyalOperaHouse.Atthetimeofwriting,thebuildingisreportedlybeingredevelopedintoahotelandpolicemuseumbyaQatariinvestmentfirm.

Hammam Turkish Baths, Jermyn Street AvisittothebathswasnotonlyapopularpastimeforVictoriansbutanecessityforatimewhenonlytheextremelywealthyhadplumbingintheirhomes.TurkishbathswereinspiredbythosefoundinTurkey,GreeceandSpainandtheLondonversionsboastedmagnificentthemedinteriors.
TheHammamTurkishBathsopenedin1862andweresaid,foratime,tobethefinestinEurope.ThepopularityofthesefacilitiesdeclinedinthetwentiethcenturyasbathroomswereinstalledinhomesandtheHammamwascompletelydestroyedbyabomblandingonJermynStreetduringtheSecondWorldWar.

Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly Thisupmarketstreetopenedin1819andwasaprecursortomoderndayshoppingmalls.Itwasgivenitsownprivatepoliceforcewhichstilllooksafterthearcadetoday:theBurlingtonBeadles.Singingandwhistlingisbannedinthearcade:ruleswhichwereestablishedwhenpickpocketsfrequentedtheplaceandbrothelsweretobefoundinitsupperchambers.
Apparentlyinthemid-nineteenthcenturyMadamParsonsranabonnetshopinthearcadewhichwasafrontforabrothelinnearbyRegentStreet.MadamParsonsfacilitatedliaisonsbetweengentlemenandtheladiesanditwasonlyafterherdeaththatMadamParsonswasdiscoveredtohavebeenaman.

St James’s Square ThissquarehasbeenanexclusivelocationinLondonformostofitshistory.Laidoutintheseventeenthcentury,thesquarehasbeenhometothreeprimeministers,NancyAstor,AdaLovelace(pioneeringmathematicianandLordByron'sdaughter)andGeneralEisenhower'sUKHQintheSecondWorldWar.

Scotland Yard, Whitehall TheoriginalheadquartersofLondon’sMetropolitanPoliceoccupiedahouseinWhitehallafterthefoundingoftheforcein1829.ThehousebackedontoastreetcalledGreatScotlandYardwhichtheheadquarterstookitsnamefrom.
Astheforcegrew,itoccupiedneighbouringbuildingsandthenmovedtoanewbuildingclosebyin1890.ScotlandYardmovedtoabuildinginVictoriainthe1960sandthenrelocatedtoWestminster–nottoofarfromitsoriginallocation–in2016.

The Royal Aquarium, Westminster Thisentertainmentvenuewasbuiltin1876.Theaquariumitselfnevertookoff-thewatertanksranintoproblemsanditwasastandingjokethattheaquariumnevercontainedanyfish.InabidtoattractvisitorstheaquariumputondangerousactssuchasZazelthehumancannonball(afourteenyearoldgirl)andthetightropewalker,TheGreatFarini.

City of London police headquarters, Old Jewry ThispolicestationservedastheheadquartersoftheCityofLondonPolicefrom1863until2001.Thebuildingisnowusedforofficespacebutit’spopularwithJacktheRippertoursbecauseofficersinthisbuildinginvestigatedthemurderofJacktheRipper’sfourthvictim,CatherineEddowes,in1888.

Tower Subway ThissubwaywasthemainrouteforcrossingtheThamesbytheTowerofLondonbeforeTowerBridgeopenedin1894.Thesubwayisanarrowirontubewhichopenedin1870andoriginallyhadasmallrailcarriageforpeopletotravelon.
Thisearlysubwaytrainfailedtomakemoneysothetunnelbecameafoottunnelandwasapparentlyadamp,echoeyclaustrophobicwalkwithahalfpennytoll.ItwasusedlittleonceTowerBridgeopenedanditclosedin1898-butit'sstillthere!It'snowusedforwatermains.

Astley’s Amphitheatre, Lambeth Astley’sAmphitheatreopenedinthe1770sandwasbuiltbyPhilipAstleywhoisconsideredtobethefatherofthemoderncircus.Theamphitheatrehasfrequentlyfeaturedfictionandwasrebuiltanumberoftimesbeforefinallybeingdemolishedinthe1890s.ItwaslocatedclosetothesouthernendofWestminsterBridge,partoftoday’sStThomas’sHospitalnowstandsoverit.

London Necropolis Railway, Cemetery Station, Waterloo TheLondonNecropolisRailwayranfuneraltrainsfromCemeteryStation,justbehindWaterlooStation,downtoBrookwoodCemeterythirtymilesawayinSurrey.ThecemeterywasbuiltbytheLondonNecropolisCompanyinthe1850swhenthecapitalwasrunningoutofspacetoburyitsdead.Atthetimeofitsopening,Brookwoodwasthelargestcemeteryintheworld.Themournerstravelledinthepassengercarriagesandthecoffinswerecarriedin
aseparatewindowlesscarriage.CemeteryStationwasmovedtoanewbuildingwhenWaterlooStationwasexpandedin1902,therailwayceasedoperationafteritsLondonstationwasbombedintheSecondWorldWar.

Royal Doulton Pottery, Lambeth ThislargepotterywasestablishedonLondon’ssouthbankintheearlynineteenthcenturyandbecameamajoremployerinthearea.Someofthebuildings,includingtheshowroom,hadabeautiful,ornamentalstyledesignedtoreflecttheproductsthefactorymade.
ThefactorywastargetedbybombsintheSecondWorldWarandwasdemolishedinthe1950s.Asmallpartofthepotterycomplexstillstands,includingSouthbankHouse-itsexteriorgivesyouanideaofhowbeautifulsomeofthesebuildingswere.

Gonsalva Road, Battersea ThiswasarowofterracedhomeswhichhousedworkersforsouthLondon’sindustryandrailways.Myinterestinthestreetarosefromthediscoverythatmygreatgrandmotherandherfamilylivedthereformanyyears.TheareasufferedbombdamageduringtheSecondWorldWarandwasclearedforredevelopmentinthe1950sand60s.It’snowhometotheWestburyEstateandwouldbeunrecognisabletomyancestors.
