PENSHURST WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 10 From The Principal’s Desk The year is quickly flying past as we approach the end of another term. Kindergarten students have completed their first six months of school and have made tremendous progress, while our Year 6 students are about to commence their last 6 months of primary school. We have had a jam-packed ten weeks of learning as the children have engaged in the many extra-curricular activities offered this term. Many of our students were involved in the University competitions for Technology, Science, Spelling and Writing. We have been advised that our students in the Technology competition achieved two High Distinctions, three Distinctions and two Credits. Our Sports in Schools program once again has been successful and our Peer Support Program has been popular with both our leaders and the students within their groups. Life Education, Digi Ed and our successful auditions for SPAF and Create South are all highlights of the student achievements this term. Our Kindergarten classes have been involved in a new initiative called L3. This is a different approach to teaching reading and vocabulary. Over the past two years, Penshurst West has examined the teaching approaches and have moved towards evidence- based teaching practices. This means that the strategies our teachers use to teach Literacy and Numeracy have a strong research-base that shows their strengths and successes. Below is a graph representing the growth of our Kindergarten students from Term 1 Week 5 to Term 2 Week 5. It shows the excellent growth across the grade. The Term 3 calendar is looking very exciting and busy. We are offering the Jelly Beans Music program to our K-2 students on a Wednesday each week for $40.00 and the Scope IT program on Tuesdays for Years 3-6 at $50.00 per term. This will coincide with our focus next term on ‘engaged learning’. Our students involved in the performing arts also have a big term coming up with Education Week, Open Day and our Rockdale Shopping Centre performances in Week 2, in addition to the SPAF performances in Week 3. It is going to be a fantastic term of learning for all our students. The year is quickly flying past as we approach the end of another term. We have had a jam-packed ten weeks of learning as the children have engaged in the many extra-curricular activities offered this term. This is a different approach to teaching reading and vocabulary. Over the past two years, Penshurst West has examined the teaching approaches and have moved towards evidence-based teaching practices. School Disco

The School Disco is being held tomorrow in the Hall. All students from Penshurst West are invited to have an evening filled with fun activities, dancing and competitions. Prizes will be awarded throughout the evening. The theme is Pyjamas and Onesies.

The K-2 Disco is being held from 4:30pm to 6:00pm while the Year 3- 6 Disco will commence at 6:15pm and continue to 7:45pm. Entry costs $5.00 which includes a popper and packet of chips. We are also offering students the chance to get their hair sprayed or nails and face painted for $2 each or all three for $5.

All funds raised from this disco are being put into the purchase of school readers.

Olympic Day To mark the Olympic Games, Penshurst West is holding an Olympic Day next term. A special Opening Ceremony, complete with torch relay, will start our Olympic Day. K-2 students will then compete in a variety of events while the students in Years 3-6 compete in their events. All students will compete for points in the events as a selected country. Points will be awarded to each nation and a Closing Ceremony will be held at the end of the Olympic Day. Date: Friday 12 August 2016 Venue: Olds Park Time: 12:30pm-3:20pm

The permission note will be sent home early in Term 3.

Swim School The Annual Learn to Swim program will run in the last two weeks of Term 3. This is an extremely valuable opportunity for students who are unable to confidently swim 25 metres or more. The only cost to parents is the bus fare and pool entry as lessons

for the 10 days are covered by the Department of Education. The program is open to students in Year 2 to Year 4. This information is simply to make you aware that the program will be running. Notes will be distributed in Term 3 and the positions will be on a first paid basis as there are limited spaces given to the school for this program.

Education Week As in previous years, Penshurst West is combining our Open Day for Education Week with the Book Week Character Parade. All students are encouraged to dress up as a book character and join the parade with their class. This is always a popular event for our students and parents. Following the character parade, there will be open classrooms with an opportunity for families to look at what their children have been learning. A concert featuring our dance groups, choir and our Panjammers Steel Band will also be held as part of the Open Day events.

Date: Monday 1 August Event: Book Character Parade Date: School COLA Time: 9:45am for a 10:00am start

Event: Education Week Open Day Venue: Penshurst West School classroom and grounds Time 11.30am - 1.00pm

Election Day Cake Stall and BBQ

The P&C are running an Election Day Cake Stall and BBQ at our school this Saturday 2nd July. This is a great fundraising opportunity for our school, and we are seeking donations of home

baked cakes, slices or biscuits to sell on the day. Cake boxes along with notes about the event have been sent home to each family and additional boxes can also be obtained from the school office. A colouring competition is being run this year to decorate the cake boxes, with some lovely art sets as prizes for the

best entries. We also need volunteers to help on the Saturday morning with the BBQ or cake stall. If you can help, if only for an hour, it would be greatly appreciated. Please see the note at the end of the newsletter for further

details.

Georges River Council's Environmental Protection Character Competition

Congratulations to Dorothy for winning the Georges River Council's Environmental Protection Character competition. Out of 218 entries, Dorothy’s name ‘Ti Bob’ for the powerful owl was the winning entry. On behalf of the school, I wish to say a big thank you to the General Manager of the new Georges River Council, Gail Connolly, for her inspiring words and presentation to Dorothy at last week’s Values Assembly. We are honoured to have received a gift pack for each child from the Council, a school Worm-Farm Kit and a collection of wonderful books for the school library. We will put them to good use. It was a special occasion for Dorothy and it was nice to see her smile and receive her award. Mr Hyslop Assistant Principal

Calmsley Hill Farm Excursion

Kindergarten students had their first excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm last Tuesday. They were able to pat a range of farm animals, milk a cow, watch a sheep shearing show and they even spotted a camel! The students were all exhausted after a day of exploring but took away a lot of information about their new furry friends.

PBIS

This term students at Penshurst West Public School have been revising ways to make positive choices in the classroom and on the playground. Our Positive Behaviour in Schools (PBIS) program explicitly teaches our School Values and behavioral expectations. Each week students engage in a short PBIS lesson to discuss the behaviour expectations of different areas in the school. Our merit system of Buzzies, Bronze Awards and Value Awards also helps to reinforce the PBIS program.

Week 9: Safety in the classroom

Students revised positive ways to display safety in the classroom and around different areas of the school. They were reminded to walk through the corridors, use equipment appropriately and to keep their hands and feet to themselves. Congratulations to the value award recipients in Week 9 for exhibiting safety in the classroom.

Week 10: Respect on the playground

This week, students were reminded of how to show respect in the playground. Congratulations to our value award recipients for demonstrating respect by taking turns, following the rules of the game, using polite language and including those who are left out.

want to participate, please cut out and attach the section with cake type and ingredients. There will be a selection of prizes for the best entries! Additional colouring sheets and/or cake boxes can be

obtained from the office. Can you help sell the cakes/BBQ items, or help us with the BBQ on the day? If so, could you complete
