Greetings to PAOSA members and friends— Happy Spring! I hope you are all having a wonderful year. Now that we are about three-fourths through our PAOSA year, I ask that each of you consider how you might contrib-ute to the growth and well-being of our chapter. Every year PAOSA seeks to bring you top-notch presenters and offer a variety of work-shops to meet your needs and satisfy your preferences. Our stellar Program Chair, Mi-chelle Przybylowski, works hard to coordinate dates with presenters and Abington Friends School. Thanks to Michelle’s efforts, we always have a fine roster of clinicians each sea-son. We are also very fortunate to have a host school that has a full instrumentarium and beautiful facility. We need new at-large Board members and folks to help out with hospitality at workshops and assist with some of the officers’ duties. Our officers are very dedicated and would welcome help with registration, yard sales, fund-raising, clean-up and other details. Please feel free to approach any Board member about helping or serving on the Board. Our PENTATON editor, Roxanne Dixon, is stepping down after five years of dedicated serv-ice. Thanks, Roxanne, for all the beautiful newsletters you produced! We are fortunate that a current Board member, Britt Marie Dominick, has stepped up to be the new PENTATON editor. Make sure to view our website, paosa.org, for photos of chapter workshops, officers, up-coming presenters and membership information. Also check out the AOSA website, aosa.org, for information about national membership, scholarships, grants, summer Orff teacher certification levels, master classes and special courses. Also look for informa-tion and online registration for the November 2010 conference in Spokane, WA. There’s lots of great stuff! Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous 2010 Martha Glaze Zook PAOSA President

As many of you know, our long-time host at the Abington Friends School, and PAOSA board member and friend Deb Pizzi is leaving her position to pursue a new adventure living overseas… Dear Deb, We are so grateful to you for all you are and all you have done for our chapter. We have nestled into your “home,” believing that it is possible for children to be in the perfect space for their learning and surrounded by all of the instruments and art work they need to be inspired. You have cleaned and baked and prepared and unlocked and organized and troubleshot, providing us with the space famous clinicians want to revisit. You have guided us through your work on the board, and you have left us with a growing Founders’ Library that enables us to learn between work-shops. Through your collaboration with Linda Kuffler, we got to know of Ashley Bryan’s work and to understand the celebration of words, images, and music that transcends difference and hardship. We have watched your boys grow, and we learned so much from each of them. We have watched you grow, too, as you have stretched yourself in new ways each year, keeping the flame of the perennial learner alive. We have built masks and lanterns, and we have created ceremonies. We have danced around your Maypole, and we have explored colors and shapes. We have seen your elegant work with children at the Philadelphia conference. We have witnessed your aesthetic sense that is the hallmark of your work with children and with us. Through it, we, too, have grown. I am so excited for you, Deb. This is just the kind of adventure you love so much. You must come back and tell us about it. We’ll be listening.

-Martha Crowell on behalf of all of us

A thank you to our host and friend, Deb Pizzi

Have you taken your “levels”?

If you are new to Orff Schulwerk, you might hear terms like “levels”, “the Volumes,” and “AOSA” floated around and feel like you could use a primer.

• AOSA is the American Orff Schulwerk Association. According to their website, “The

American Orff-Schulwerk Association is a professional organization dedicated to the creative teaching approach developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. We are united by our belief that music and movement – to speak, sing and play; to listen and understand; to move and create – should be an active and joyful ex-perience.”

• “The Volumes” refers to the five volumes of “Music for Children” – examples, exer-

cises and pieces written by Carl Orff his partner in creating the Schulwerk, and Gunild Keetman. People usually are referring to the Margaret Murray English edition. Each volume includes speech and rhythm pieces and instrumental pieces and examples grouped by tonal set.

• “Levels” refers to the teacher training courses approved by AOSA. There are three

levels (though more and more post-three courses are being created). These training courses, offered by 47 AOSA approved institutions, are typically two week summer courses. During your level one course you will be introduced more methodically and thoroughly to the elements and practices of Orff Schulwerk that, if you have been to PAOSA workshops, you have seen in snippets. Levels two and three build in depth and musical (and movement) sophistication, with modes, mixed meter, and more advanced recorder playing.

Summer courses in our area include West Chester University, (July 5-16) Villanova University (July 12-23), and George Mason University (July 19-30). Alternatively, many people choose to travel to take their levels courses, which can be a good retreat-like experience. Taking your “levels” will immeasurably enrich your teaching and nourish your own artistic wellspring. Visit http://aosa.org/approvedcourses.php for information on all of the available courses.

Mom sang all her life. When my twin sister and I were in elementary school, Pat Brown was our music teacher, church choir director, and recorder consort leader. The recorder consort became a demonstration group, helping Pat to coax are music teachers to try this new way of teaching called Orff Schulwerk in the late sixties and early seventies. Mom and Dad were in a madrigal group with Pat that met at our house. We listened through the open door at bedtime. Pat chose Mom as her sabbatical replacement while she went to Sal-zburg when I was 12, and Mom kept teaching music for another 11 years. Mom took courses with Pat Brown, Brigitte Warner, and myriad workshops in the New England Orff Chapter and AOSA conferences. I tagged along from age 12, and I am forever grateful for all of the knowledge she made possible. Whenever a spring vacation took her to Washing-ton DC, Mom hung out at the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Song. She served on the NEAOSA board. She subscribed to Sing Out! Magazine, attended folk music concerts, Cam-bridge Revels, and took us to Early Music Week at Pinewoods. She and her students were filmed during production of American Odyssey, AOSA’s first film. Later, Bessie Jones came to her school as part of a Falmouth Public Schools grant. From Mom, I learned about teaching music and, especially, about teaching children. Since she died, former students of hers have written to say how much they loved her music classes and how patient she was with them. One former selectman wrote a gratitude list editorial to the local newspaper, in which he thanked Mom for sticking up for him and encouraging him to keep singing even though his voice had not changed yet. When Mom’s mind faded about other things, the word “Orff “still got Mom’s attention, and what is best for children was once more at the front of her mind. I loved bringing her news of chapters and conferences and Distin-guished Service Awards. I have taught music to children for 29 years, and I have taught adults in levels courses for more than 20 of those years. Every time someone new is excited by musical possibilities, I have Mom and Pat to thank. What we do with and for children is extraordinary work, and each of us has someone that made it possible. In this season of life and new growth, I celebrate my remarkable mother, and I marvel at the many lives she continues to touch.
