Spiritual Adoption Campaign
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION—40 WEEKS—2021
Week 9—May 22-23, 2021
“This is the week for fingers and toes. Mine are
developing really fast this week. I can’t wait to
have someone count them and tell me about the
“Little Piggy that went to Market.” I have opened
my mouth wide for the first time. Someday, I will
smile and melt my parent’s heart. Right now, my
heart beats quickly at 150 beats per minute. Isn’t
God wonderful? Pray for me.”
Spiritual Adoption Prayer Lord Jesus, you said, “let the children come to me.” (Matthew 19:14) Therefore, with deep trust in your infinite mercy, I bring _________________, the child that I have spiritually adopted and who is at risk of being aborted, to your Sacred Heart this day. Please grant that the parents of this child may quickly come to the realization that this new life is not an inconvenience or a burden, but a child; their child, their own flesh and blood. Give them the courage, strength and guidance they need to embrace this child and to choose life! Amen.
Candles will burn perpetually this week before the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel of Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist, for the following intentions:
• For peace in the world.
• That my daughter’s surgery is a success

LET HIM LEAD
"In our self-centered culture and classic American emphasis on work, we often feel we have to accomplish something during our times of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. We rate our experience by how 'good' our prayer was, how heartfelt our devotion was, or how focused we could remain. Yet prayer and contemplation are fundamentally God's work, in which we are invited to participate. We need only to give Him the opening, and He will do the rest. By coming to adoration, we are handing Him the keys to our hearts, allowing the rays of His love and grace to bathe our souls in the light of His Presence, as the rays of the sun bathe our bodies in light. If we can take the time to pull away from the busyness and distractions of life and just sit at His feet, He will lead us." (from the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration) The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Partners are needed to help other Registered adorers. There is an empty hour, Friday, 4-5:00 am and Saturday 2-3:00 am. To sign up for an hour please email us at [email protected] or contact Mary Lewis at 630-941-9173 or Joan Taylor at 630-530-8963 to register.

MASS INTENTIONS
Begin by taking a moment to calm yourself, focus on your breathing and become aware of the life force that flows through your veins. Center yourself in the words and affections of St. Augustine’s Prayer to the Holy Spirit, “Breath in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.” Sanctifying, bringing things to wholeness, blessing, restoring and creating are just some of the fruits of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not always about proclaiming loud cries of praise or singing alleluia from a roof top. It is about unfolding and encountering the ordinary in an extraordinary way. Being filled with the Holy Spirit means being filled with the fullness of God’s life and in touch with the power and wonder of God’s presence. It’s about becoming holy. It is not just for saints or people who have a religious vocation. Holiness is for the ordinary, simple run- of-the-mill person who desires to love God, others, and all of creation. When an ordinary, humble person becomes connected with life and the wondrous power of God’s love, they begin to live life more deeply, a bit more reverently, desire a simple fare and find themselves relishing in ordinary beauty. Their senses become attuned to the Author of life and they realize that they are not alone. The Holy Spirit connects all of the dots of human experience and existence, bringing everyone to center on the Divine Presence. The Holy Spirit does not just breathe “on me” but “in me” and is the force behind every breath I take. Take a moment to soak that thought in. There is the Divine Presence of the Holy Spirit in me, right now. When a person becomes in touch with truth, they know that when inspired by the Holy Spirit, his or her actions are not solely their own. They realize that they are moved by Divine Grace and drawn to things not found in secular affairs. The wonders and inspirations of today’s Feast of Pentecost are necessary to share with both those we love and those who only casually cross our paths. The first disciples, touched by the Holy Spirit, brought the Gospel to the ends of the earth one step at a time.

The Question of Authority (Article 23)
In our tracing of the development of church leadership structures in the early church, last week we began exploring the writings of Irenaeus, who was bishop of Lyon (in France) from AD 180 to 200. In his famous book “Against the Heretics”, he develops the doctrine of apostolic succession as a way of refuting the heretical teachings of the Gnostics, who claimed to be part of a chosen few who possessed a “secret knowledge” of the mysteries of God. Irenaeus appealed to the public (rather than secret) Tradition handed down by the apostles and transmitted in the churches by the bishops who succeeded one another as teachers down to his own day.
Let’s take a look at how Irenaeus uses the church of Rome as a key example of his notion of apostolic succession. In III.3.2 of “Against the Heretics”, he sets out to recount the succession list of the church of Rome, which he calls, “the greatest and most ancient church, known to all, founded at Rome by the two most glorious Apostles, Peter and Paul.” This is a bit of rhetoric on Irenaeus’ part, for the Christian community in Rome was not as ancient as that in Jerusalem or Antioch, nor was it
“founded” by Peter and Paul; it was already established when they arrived in the capital of the Roman Empire circa AD 62. Yet, because the two greatest apostles both died as martyrs in Rome circa AD 65, they were seen as “founding” the church there by their witness unto death. Irenaeus goes on: “Every church, i.e. the faithful in all parts of the world, should agree with this church because of its superior foundation.” Here we see the development of the notion of the special teaching authority of the church of Rome, which will eventually be centered on its bishop (the pope).
In III.3.3 Irenaeus gives the list of the bishops of Rome up to his own day (circa AD 190): “The blessed Apostles, after founding and providing for the church, handed over its leadership and care to Linus, who was succeeded by Anacletus. Next, in the third place from the Apostles, Clement received the episcopate, a man who had seen the Apostles themselves and had talked with them. Clement was succeeded by Evaristus, then Alexander, and then sixth from the Apostles was Sixtus. After him came Telesphorus, then Hyginus, then Pius, then Anicetus. After Soter had succeeded Anicetus, then came Eleutherus who now holds the episcopate, the twelvth from the Apostles. By this order and succession, the Tradition of the Apostles and the preaching of the truth have come down to us.” Notice how Irenaeus says that both Peter and Paul, not Peter alone, appointed Linus as the first in the succession of bishops of Rome. This suggests that he did not think of Peter and Paul as bishops, for how could both of them be the bishop of Rome at the same time? Nor did Irenaeus think of Linus and those who followed him as successors of Peter more than Paul. Irenaeus saw a clear distinction between apostles and bishops, even though he understood bishops as the “successors” to whom the apostles handed on their teaching office.
Irenaeus does not reveal the source of this succession list, but it probably depended on the memory of the clergy of Rome. How can we reconcile Irenaeus’ list of the bishops of Rome from the beginning with our previous evidence that Rome did not have a single “bishop” leading its church until the middle of the 2nd century? Given the fact that the clergy of Rome could provide to Irenaeus the names of the men who at that time were thought of as having been the past bishops of their church, we can conclude that they remembered these men as the principal leaders and teachers among the Roman presbyters. At what point in time the leading presbyters in Rome began to be called “bishops” remains unknown.

SISTER STORY Terry (Vis ’72), first met Sister when STL was coaching the girls’ softball team in 1973, as she lived across the street from the gym, and both shared a love of softball (Terry in school; STL semipro). While they coached for several years, the relationship kicked into high gear when our oldest child started Kindergarten, and STL asked Tim to be on the board. STL was the primary reason we chose Vis; 1) the discipline and respect she administered; 2) the Catholic values she taught by example; 3) a great education, including religion). So from the time our oldest started school and for the next 15 years while our kids matriculated, there are too many fond and funny memories to share in this limited space, but here are a few:
• Our oldest, Jackie ‘98, quickly learned and shared with her siblings to be extra good whenever you heard the giant set of keys on STL’s hip that clanged as she walked down the hallway.
• STL called our second oldest, Julie ‘99, Julia throughout her years at Vis and thereafter. It never bothered her, and she was too “nervous” to ever correct her. Our middle child, Jennifer ‘01, said STL made her scrub mascara off her face with water only, and told her to put her hair up because when she wore it down it was distracting to boys. STL asked our youngest daughter, Jill ‘02, if she knew what would happen if she stood on the street with her school skirt on and it was above her knees.
• Our youngest, Kevin ‘04, returned from his first day of Kindergarten and we asked him how school was; he asked, “Didn’t Sister Thomas Leo’s parents’ know she was a girl when she was born?” STL loved this story of her name and regaled it countless times.
• When preparing for Vis’ annual St. Patrick’s Day party (often lasting until the sun was rising), STL asked, “Will the usual suspects be handling the bar?” They were and so Terry had a dozen shirts made up for the fathers and one for STL (nearby, as a salute to STL’s Irish heritage and subtle sense of humor), which we all still have and STL proudly wore many times, including at the Mother House in Adrian, Michigan.
• While rolling an ice chest into the gym as we were about to build the set for one of Dave Rice’s plays, STL said to Tim, “It’s nice you brought along some Holy Water!” Aside from our family’s disciple and Catholic values that STL reinforced daily for five children over those years, we are also eternally grateful, that despite 16 years of Catholic education, it was STL who taught Tim the true utility and power of the Holy Spirit, which lives on in all of us today! Godspeed STL, we love you, miss you, will always remember you, and hope to be reunited in heaven with you!
