Questions for personal reflection based on this Sunday’s Readings…

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,

they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky

a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. –Acts 2:1-4

Do I rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance?

When I search my heart, what stubbornness do I find that could use an

honest examination?

How much do I try to use or show the Fruits and Gifts of the Holy Spirit taught to me at Confirmation in my life today?

CHURCH AND OFFICE HOURS The Rectory remains closed to visitors. The mailbox is checked regularly, throughout the hours of 10:00am-6:00pm. Please do not hesitate to call or email the office with questions or concerns. At present, the Church remains open for private prayer. This is subject to often changing directives as the crisis continues. We kindly ask that any visitors use only the main aisle, sit in the open areas, and leave the kneeler down when you leave, so that we know where to sanitize at the end of each day. We ask and expect that as others may be present, all visitors follow the protocols set forth by government officials with regard to masks, gloves, etc. During this time, envelopes or other business may be dropped off safely to the Rectory Office Mail Box. We encourage our faithful, especially the young, to stay home and heed the advice of our leaders. Items may also be mailed, or business conducted online – such as inquiries into records, etc. We are only a phone call away.

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE The coronavirus is affecting everyone in our parish, and in the world, but in many different ways. Of primary concern is the instant poverty felt by job loss: trying putting food on the table while waiting for unemployment to begin – or hopefully just brief struggles while waiting to return to work. Although we do not have unlimited resources, through the generosity of parishioners, there is help available – both through our parish, and perhaps through some agencies or programs which we can help connect you with. Please call the rectory to let us know if you, or if someone you know, may be in a bind during this difficult time.

CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES! We congratulate the Holy Rosary School community on their 85th commencement with the Class of 2020, as well as all of our parish students in all Catholic, Public and Private schools, Colleges and

Universities, as they continue through this most unusual graduation season and wind down an exhausting year. What might have once seemed impossible became commonplace, with online classes for kindergarteners, home-

style lab experiments, and cyber presentations, concerts, and even commencements! To the school teachers and our CCD teachers who learned new ways to express their passion for educating, introducing them to the world in

new ways, bringing them to a greater sense of Wonder and Awe at the mighty works of God, and especially in fostering Piety in our children from a distance; to the parents, who showed great Fortitude as they patiently learned new ways of communicating with their children, their schools, and each other; to the students, who did what they do best and adapted to ever changing circumstances; and to the administrators who relied on the Counsel of the Holy Spirit, who lost sleep over whether or not the kids would be all right – WELL DONE! May the Holy Spirit of God, whose outpouring we celebrate this weekend, reward all of you for igniting a love of Knowledge, promoting Understanding, and growing in Wisdom, which both illumines the mind and instills an attraction to the divine. For your achievements – CONGRATULATIONS!

WITH DEEPEST SYMPATHY Our parish extends our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of Marion Ropieski, James McAndrew, and Regina Callis whose funeral rites were celebrated this week. May they be received into the arms of our merciful Savior quickly, and may their families be comforted in their time of loss.

SACRAMENTAL NEWS Please be on the lookout for information regarding First Holy Communion and Confirmation later this week, as we move forward with plans to celebrate these special moments of grace in the lives of our young members.

FIRST FRIDAY The First Friday of the Month occurs this week. While in the Yellow Phase, house visits will remain suspended. If all goes well, visits may resume in July. To our homebound parishioners: please know that if you need to speak with Father or any staff, we are only a phone call away.

PICNIC NEWS Because of the efforts to slow Covid-19, it was decided that we will not hold our annual large gathering picnic this year. Our volunteers are working on ways to spread out over several sales/events what we would usually offer at the picnic, as well as cooperating with other organizations in town so that not only our parish, but also the Duryea community as a whole can try to make the best of a rather difficult set of circumstances. Safety – of both volunteers and customers – as well as adherence to issued guidelines will remain at the forefront of our operations. Thank you for your understanding of this, and for your continued prayers for each other and for the world as we move through these unchartered waters.

JMJ CATHOLIC RADIO PROGRAMMING June is the month of the Sacred Heart on JMJ Catholic Radio, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 98.9FM & 750AM, Hazelton at 1490AM & 100.1FM and Dushore at 91.7FM. We recommend for our early morning risers “The Son Rise Morning Show” broadcast from Sacred Heart Radio in Cincinnati, Ohio. The format includes both secular and Catholic news along with in-depth interviews. We are also blessed to recommend “Fathers Know Best,” with local son Mike Aquilina, a prolific author from Pittston. Consider tuning in as you go about your day for a refreshing approach to broadcasting.

THE GIFT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM will begin summer weekly sales starting on Thursday, June 4, from 5:00 – 6:00 PM. Sales will take place in Holy Rosary School’s gym. If you are unable to come during that time, you may drop off your order with payment at the rectory during summer office hours. Please label the envelope “Gift Certificate Program.” Please adhere to the following directives if you plan on stopping by to purchase gift cards: 1) face covering, 2)physical distancing of 6 feet; 3) Use marked entrances and exits.

HOUSEKEEPING POSITION Due to the recent retirement of Mrs. Hodick, whom we thank for her years of service to our pastors and people, and now that we are in the “Yellow” we are in need of a replacement Housekeeper. Duties include household cleaning, laundry, hospitality for occasional visitors like missionaries, occasional cooking and meal preparation, care of sacristy items, and other similar tasks. Please call the rectory during ordinary business hours, or send an email, for a complete job description or to ask any questions about the position.

Week of May 31 – June 6, 2020 ~ The Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

GRADUAL RETURN TO PUBLIC MASS Your responses will shape how our limited capacity will be

filled – think of it as an RSVP. Some points to ponder:

• The Obligation to attend Sunday Mass will remain suspended for this time. There is no sin in remaining home if you feel safer or more comfortable there for now. We encourage our elderly and vulnerable parishioners to wait before returning to Mass too soon. Livestream Mass will still be provided online during this time. Although not a substitute for participation in person, it has been of considerable value to those at home.

• We at Nativity will follow a system for scheduling who is going to be in the church for each Mass from among those that wish to venture out at this time…and unfortunately, no extras can be allowed. This is very difficult for our clergy and staff and volunteers to do to begin with, in that the thought of refusing entrance to church or refusing admittance to the sacraments is hard for both the “bouncer” and the “bounced.” Please review the materials sent home, respond to them quickly, and please don’t just show up expecting to get in. IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED A PHONE CALL OR EMAIL FROM THE PARISH, OR HAVE NOT SENT IN A REPLY, WAIT TO COME TO CHURCH UNTIL YOU HAVE.

• The Mass schedule may be adjusted to allow for participation and reception of Communion to be spread out throughout the week during this time. Again, please respond to this week’s mailing quickly.

• For those who will be coming to the church during this yellow phase, and for those who stop for private prayer, please be aware of changing traffic patterns in the church, changed regulations, and changing hours for private prayer to allow staff and volunteers time to properly clean and sanitize – and to allow for funerals also. If you are wondering what the schedule might be on a particular day, please call the rectory.

• Mass will seem a little different – missalettes will not be used – masks must be worn while in the building – there will be one entrance in and one exit out – Communion will be distributed following the Mass – seats will be assigned – and all those who are scheduled to attend a particular Mass will be expected to take his or her temperature at home before coming. If your temperature is elevated – please stay home.

• Information on First Holy Communion and Confirmation will be forthcoming this week – Kids, Families…YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN IN ALL OF THIS!
