Thanks for a great week and best wishes for the week to come!

Father’s Day - June 18

Father’s Day Novena cards are available on the church windowsills and at the Parish Office.

Today, we friars begin our Provincial Chapter at Siena College. This is a very important meeting of all the friars held every three years at which we discuss our life together, make important decisions about our life and ministry and elect leadership. Please continue to pray for Holy Name Province as we gather together. Once again, here is the prayer for the chapter:

Loving God, send your Spirit of Truth, the Comforter, to the friars as they prepare to gather in Chapter. Lead them and draw them into that future which is your will for them as Franciscans of the United States in the 21st Century. Inspire them that they may preach your Word with authenticity and audacity, that they may embody your Word with compassion and openness, as fellow pilgrims, not strangers, to all they meet. Give them the courage to walk more closely in the footsteps of St. Francis, who incarnated your loving care for each human person and for creation. We ask this Christ, our Lord. Amen.

While the friars are away Fr. Michael Rodak, pastor of Queen of Peace in Hewitt, will preside at the 7:30 AM mass Monday, June 5 through Thursday, June 8. There will be no mass on Friday, June 9. Any funerals that week will be celebrated on those same days at 9:30 AM only. There will be no funerals on Friday.

On Sunday, May 21, 2017, our Gay and Lesbian Ministry joined a Pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in the Archdiocese of Newark. In attendance, there were about 150 parishioners from various LGBT Ministries in NY, CT and NJ. Fr. Gonzalo concelebrated with at least other 10 priests, from the different ministries from the 3 states. We received a very warm welcome from Cardinal Tobin and Bishop Cruz. Also in attendance, Msgr. Andreano, Vicar General and Chancellor of the Archdiocese. Of course, there was a collection. All proceeds of this collection will be donated to Lifeties which runs several homes designed to meet the needs of otherwise-homeless LGBT young adults. The main celebrant and homilist was Rev. Francis Gargani, C.Ss.R. After Eucharist, we had a personal tour of the Cathedral Basilica followed by fellowship at Casa Vasca. We were moved by the warm embrace and welcome provided by Cardinal Tobin and all in attendance. It was a great event of Christian prayer and discipleship. We are very grateful to Roy Corson, our Saint Mary’s LGBT Ministry Director, for his service to our parish.

On Wednesday, May 24, we had the graduation party for our ELL students. It was also the retirement party for Tom McKenzie, after 19 years of uninterrupted service to Saint Mary’s. We prayed, distributed diplomas and paid tribute to Tom and his wife Dalia for their Christian discipleship. George Dean, our new ELL Director, and some of our volunteer teachers were in attendance. Many thanks to all the volunteers in this great program!

Finally, on Friday June 9, 21 8th graders will graduate from St. Mary’s School. Congratulations to these fine young men and women on this achievement. The students will continue their education at various high schools in the area. We are proud of all them and grateful to them for bringing their St. Mary’s education and Franciscan hearts wherever they go!

Pope Francis Prayer Intention for the month of May: Christians in Africa. That Christians in Africa, in imitation of the Merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice and peace.
