Pentecost SundayJune 9, 2019
When reading the Scripture that describes the first Pentecost, I am captivated by the number of things happening simultaneously — a sound like the rush of a violent wind from heaven, divided tongues like fire, people speaking in different languages and people hearing about God’s mighty deeds in the language they understood best. Can you imagine the surprise, wonder and excitement of that experience?
I have attended worship services at Wilshire since 1983, and I can’t remember any times we’ve had loud sounds like a violent wind or seen tongues of flame. We’ve had other languages spoken, and it always adds to the richness of our time of worship. Even on those Sundays when the only language we hear is English and we are participating in the same worship service, we don’t experience worship in the same way. Just as the people at Pentecost heard a message in their own languages, the Holy Spirit communicates God’s love and mighty deeds of power to us individually in creative ways.
The language that reaches some of us might come in the form of a prayer or a Scripture. For others the text of the choir’s anthems or the
singing of hymns may capture our imaginations. The sound of the organ might be what causes us to lift our heads and experience the freshness of God’s presence. We may be touched by the sermon that inspires us and ignites a new flame in our hearts.
Maybe the Holy Spirit uses something entirely different to send us the message of God’s love. It could be that the past week left us with nothing but emptiness and exhaustion, so having the time to sit quietly will allow God to touch us where we hurt. We may discover God’s deeds of power when we look around the congregation and see the people who have been the hands and feet of Jesus when we needed it most.
Just like the people at Pentecost, we need an awakening and a new understanding of God’s love, grace and power. As we worship together today, prepare to be surprised by the language that God uses to speak to you.

Call to Worship Come, Holy Spirit, Come! David LantzSanctuary Choir
Come, Holy Spirit, show us your glory. Your people are here in this place.Sweet Holy Spirit, move now among us, and touch us with mercy and grace.
Spirit Eternal, come in your fullness, and breathe on your people, we pray.Come, Holy Spirit, fresh wind of heaven, we long for your presence today.
Spirit of Pentecost, fill us with more of you. You are the breath of God, promise of heaven.Spirit of Pentecost, fill us with life anew. You are the gift divine, show us your glory.
New Testament Reading — Acts 2:1–21 Allison Brown / Connie Freeman
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet

Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

+Gospel Reading — John 14:8–17, 25–27 Matt Dodrill / Aaron Coyle-Carr
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. … “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Si me amáis, guardaréis mis mandamientos. ...
Gracias a Dios.

Of the Father’s love begotten, e’er the worlds began to be.He is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending he.
Of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore.
Oh, that birth forever blessed, when the virgin full of grace,By the Holy Ghost conceiving, bare the Savior of our race.
And the babe, the world’s Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore.

Nation, do not cry, Jehovah will protect us.We will attain freedom, Jehovah will protect us.
O ye heights of heaven adore him, angel hosts his praises sing.Powers, dominions bow before him, and extol our God and King.
Let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert ring, evermore and evermore.

About today’s anthem: Hope for Resolution: A Song for Mandela and de Klerk was written by Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory. Of the origin, Sean has explained: “Paul and I wrote Hope in 1994 to commemorate the end of Apartheid and the beginning of reconciliation in South Africa. It is dedicated to the memory of Nelson Mandela, who struggled long and hard against inequality and strove for meaningful dialogue between the races. Rest in peace.” The score and its melodies tell the story of these two men and their reconciliation work: the initial European chant-melody is juxtaposed with the South African anti-apartheid liberation song Thula sizwe in Zulu.
All guests are invited to a coffee reception in the James Gallery immediately after the service.
Welcome to Wilshire today. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by.

While the debate in Texas and the nation continues over how best to reform complex immigration policies, the numbers of Central American families seeking asylum in the U.S. has grown exponentially, overwhelming the service capacity of both government and private infrastructures along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Dallas Responds is a grass-roots, faith community-led initiative, supported by Faith Forward Dallas@Thanks-Giving Square. Its vision is to support the work of the Annunciation House of El Paso by expanding hospitality and in-transit humane support for Central American asylum-seeking families released from ICE detention and transported to Dallas. These asylum-seekers are coming to Dallas as they await final plans for relocation to sponsors across the U.S. Dallas will accept two buses of asylum-seeking families each week, indefinitely.
Last night, the local faith community received the first group of 57 asylum-seeking families to a respite center established at Oak Lawn United
Methodist Church. A broad coalition, Wilshire included, will provide daytime respite, food, transportation and basic assistance to those awaiting scheduled transportation to their final destinations. The stay of these families will range from six to 60 hours. Dallas is expecting the second bus sometime around Tuesday or Wednesday this week.
The volunteer opportunities are great. The respite center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day while families await confirmed transportation plans. There is a great need for nurses, medical professionals, licensed mental health professionals, hospitality workers, donation sorters, shift coordinators, Spanish speakers and transportation drivers.
All volunteers must have a background check and be over the age of 16. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Abbey Adcox with your name, contact info and specialization, if applicable. As the next sign-up is ready, it will be made available to you.
Contact Abbey at [email protected].
