Summer time is coming! With easy, breezy days ahead, vacation planning is in full swing! We know that as your schedules shift to sandy picnics, home projects and weekend excursions, it is hard to plan ahead. We get it!! Yet please keep in mind, a few things here at Bethany need to remain constant....no matter what season we are in. It is our responsibility to provide the very best in Christian care, lessons, fellowship and fun. We take pride in doing just that and more importantly to have the children of this church safely grow in God's love. Due to our strict safety policy and two person rule, our heartfelt request is for you to offer your time as a volunteer in our Nursery, for Sunday School and during Children's Church. Please see the calendars located on the boards in the Education Wing. Sign up now or jot down an open date then confirm with a call, text or email. We have great activities on the books and more in the works, but we need and rely upon your help to maintain our ministries this summer and to give Bethany's babies, toddlers, children and youth the very best. Most Gratefully, Kris, Dawn and Jeannie

Endowment Fund

Fourth Annual Fundraiser

Mark your calendars! The Endowment Committee is planning a rather unique fundraiser this year! With all the regular Bethany activities that occur in September and October, and the Bethany Bazaar coming up in November, we have decided to conduct a Box Lunch Extravaganza on Sunday June 12th, just in time for picnic weather!

We will be preparing individual picnic lunches comprised of a sumptuous chicken salad sandwich on a specialty roll, fresh fruit, potato chips, and a large gourmet cookie, all packed in a decorative box designed for that purpose. Lunches must be pre-ordered by June 5th, so we can know how many lunches to prepare. Lunches are priced at $8.00.

Box lunches will be available for pick-up in the church kitchen following each service on June 12th, for you to enjoy at the beach, out on the boat, or in your back yard on what we hope will be a picture-perfect June day!

Your support of Bethany’s Endowment Fund, no matter how large or small, provides funding for outreach, education, and music programs, and will help us to fulfill God’s mission for Bethany. Even if you can’t join us, we encourage you to support our fundraising efforts by making a donation in honor or in memory of someone special. Our Endowment is growing and with all of our support it will continue to provide a solid foundation for future ministry.

Endowment Fund Box Lunch Extravaganza

Please return this form and your payment no later than June 5, 2016.

If paying by check, please make check payable to Bethany UMC and write “Endowment Fund” on the memo line.

Orders may be placed in the collection plate or turned in to the church office.

Cost of each Lunch is $8.00. Name_________________________________________________________

If you have a family member who is graduating (kindergarten, elementary, middle school, high school, college), please contact the church office and let us know so we can include them in our recognition. Thanks for your help.

Please be in prayer for General Conference, which meets May 10-20, in Portland, OR, as delegates from all over the world meet to prayerfully consider ways to be a more inviting and inclusive church in our changing global community, following Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19 to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”

THANK YOU — It is special people like you that help others face life’s challenges. My blanket stays on my bed or in my chair. I can feel God’s love by keeping it near. My beautiful loving blanket is perfect. After losing my mother in November and now facing cancer treatment, I thank God for his people he sends to hold my hand in so many different ways. God bless each of you. In God’s love, Diana Ramsey

GORDON BINKERD A CENTENNIAL TRIBUTE 1916-2016

The eminent American composer Gordon Ware Binkerd was born 22 May 1916 on the Ponca Indian Reservation in Lynch, Nebraska. Though not of Native American heritage, his parents lived in various small towns across the state before settling on the Rose Bud Sioux Indian Reservation at Gregory. Here Gordon finished high school and left home to attend college at South Dakota Wesleyan, already having won distinction in a national competition as one of the five best young pianists in America. While precocious as a performer, Binkerd matured late as a composer. Although advanced study began at the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) in 1940, it was not until he entered Harvard College in 1946, following naval service in World War II, that Binkerd’s talent began to ripen. There, as a student of Walter Piston and a classmate of Leonard Bernstein, he refined his compositional technique and gained a solid foundation in music history. Binkerd left Harvard in 1949 to accept an appointment as professor of composition and theory at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Academic duties gave him uninterrupted time for creative work only during the summers, which he spent as artist-in-residence at the MacDowell Colony (Peterborough, NH) and Yaddo (Saratoga Springs, NY). There, throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he wrote prolifically for symphony orchestras, instrumental and vocal soloists, chamber ensembles, and above all choirs – gaining an international reputation as one of America’s finest choral composers. In 1971 Gordon Binkerd retired from teaching to devote himself exclusively to writing music. During the next quarter century he composed prodigiously, until the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in 1996 brought his creative activity to an end. He died on 5 September 2003 at his home in Urbana, IL, at age 87. Mr. Binkerd is survived by his wife, Patricia Walker of St. Louis, MO, whom he married there in 1942. Today’s Offertory, Listen, Sweet Dove, Unto My Song by Gordon Binkerd, is particularly appropriate for Pentecost. Its title is the first line of the poem Whitsunday (or Pentecost) by George Herbert, one of that 17th-century school of English “metaphysical” poets whose best known member was John Donne. Binkerd’s enchanting tone-poem is based on a call-and-response motif that evokes the echoing song of doves in the forest — like wind and flame, the dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit. As befits its subject, this music is lyrical and introspective, elegantly written and emotionally reserved. There is also a purity and devotional fervor about it that recalls the a cappella choral works of Renaissance masters such as Palestrina, Josquin des Pres, and William Byrd, which Binkerd studied at Harvard under the legendary musicologists Willi Apel and Otto Kinkeldey. We were privileged to present the world première of Listen, Sweet Dove, Unto My Song at Bethany on 5 December 2004; it was unpublished and discovered by Patricia Binkerd only after her husband’s death. We look forward to continuing our celebration of Gordon Binkerd’s 100th birthday throughout 2016.
