There was scarcely a person of wealth or influence or power amongst them; there was scarcely a person of intellectual eminence; they were poor; they were undistinguished; and they were simple. To this company of people was given an incredible task: ‘Ye shall be my witnesses,’ said the risen Christ, ‘both in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the earth’ (Acts 1:8). “The message they were to bring was the story of a wandering Galilean prophet, crucified as a common criminal in Jerusalem. They were Jews, and they were to bring their message to a world where anti-Semitism was as violent as it has ever been at any time in history. They were to preach purity to a world that was steeped in immorality, and which for the most part did not even regard chastity as a virtue to be desired. “On the face of it, it looked like a task which was completely impossible. It would not have been in the least surprising from a human point of view, if those who were confronted with it had simply recognized its impossibility, and had not even begun to attempt it. But before they began the task they were bidden to wait. To wait for what, or for whom? They were bidden to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit upon them (Acts 1: 4-8). And when the Holy Spirit came, the task that seemed impossible somehow be- came possible. “Within thirty years the message of the gospel had reached Rome and far beyond, and the numbers of the church were reckoned in the hundred thousand, and into the world had come new life and new purity which even those most hostile to Christianity could not deny. The New Testa- ment leaves no doubt that the power behind this miracle was the power of the Holy Spirit. It is that same power which the Church of today needs to confront the challenges and grasp the opportunities before it.” (From)The Promise of the Spirit by William Barclay Remember: Beginning this Sunday (May 15) St. Luke will be on WTVM Channel 9 at 10:00 a.m.

HOW DO I JOIN THE CHURCH?You may become a part of the St. Luke family of God in one of the following ways:1. If you have never joined a church before, you may become a member by profession of faith in Jesus Christ and by being baptized. If you have already been baptized (as a child or as an adult) in a Christian Church, your baptism is recognized by St. Luke United Methodist Church. You will be asked to uphold St. Luke church with your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. 2. If you are a member of another United Methodist Church or another Christian denomination, indicate to one of the pastors that this is your desire. St. Luke will then transfer your membership.3. If you have any questions about faith in Christ, about United Methodism in general or St. Luke in particular, please ask one of the pastors!

“The Unseen Hand” A. J. Sims There is an unseen hand to me, that leads through ways I cannot see; while going through this world of woe, this hand still leads me as I go. Refrain: I’m trusting to the unseen hand, that guides me through this weary land; and some sweet day I’ll reach that strand, still guided by the unseen hand. I long to see my Savior’s face, and sing the story “Saved By Grace;” and there upon that Golden Strand, I’ll praise Him for His guiding hand. Refrain. “Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more! Refrain.

Congratulations to St. Luke Girl Scouts, Hannah King, Madison McDaniel, and Georgia-Lee Smith (pictured) for earning the Girl Scout Silver Award for the completion of a Silver Award Project. Beginning early last year, they contributed many hours to planning, planting, tending, and harvesting a garden for the Respite Care ministry. In the fall, they filled the beds with daffodil bulbs and pots of pansies. They also spent time with the Respite Care participants. We know that each will continue in developing her leadership skills as she graduates from 8th grade and goes to High School.
