When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

When they heard this sound, a crowd came together, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Then Peter came out of the house with the Eleven, and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews; These people are not drunk - it’s only nine in the morning!

No, this is what has happened: God has raised Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured it out. What you now see and hear is the outpouring of this Spirit!

Speaking in tongues!

• The Apostles were able to speak in words that other people could understand.

• Some Christians “speak in tongues” but what they say has no meaning in any known language. – They say that it is a “heavenly language”,

to them to praise God in a special way that only He can understand.

Do you think this kind of “speaking in tongues” is the same gift as the Apostles received?

Do you think it is a genuine “gift of the Spirit” ?
