School Mission Statement In a supportive partnership, provide for the development of each child the attitude, skills and knowledge needed to cope
with the demands of living in our society.
Pentland State School
On behalf of our school we sincerely thank the team of dedicated and talented students and staff from Blackheath and Thornburgh College.
We thank you for including our students and letting them have a go at some spray painting and decorating the underwater animals. We appreciate the team who gave up part of their
weekend to drive out and complete the amazing art piece. The bubble alphabet will be a great resource that the junior classroom will be able to use to develop their letter/sound
knowledge for years to come. The talented team sketched out their ideas and brought the wall to life with their artistic talent while perfectly hitting the design brief.
It goes without saying that all children need to be enrolled at school and should attend every school day. It is a
parent's responsibility to ensure that their child attends school on every school day for the educational program in which they are enrolled.
Parents of students in the compulsory participation phase of education are obliged to ensure their child is
participating full-time in their education. Any time a student is not attending or participating in their educational program it is considered an absence and must be explained.
If your child has to be absent from school, it is important to advise the school and provide a reason for the absence. To explain an absence, parents and carers may: • send a note • telephone or text the school office • visit the school. Justified reasons for absences may include if the student: • has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment • is sick • is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral).
Absences for reasons such as the following may not be justified: • going into nearby towns for the day • sleeping in • minding younger siblings • minor family events • No clothes, shoes or lunch If you have any questions or concerns about this please don’t hesitate to contact me or pop up to the office for a chat.
Yours in learning, Dean Gartrell
Classroom Capers
In the K-2 classroom we have wrapped up most of our poetry units. I’m delighted to say that our students have done an
exceptional job developing, innovating and presenting their poems to the whole class. It has been fantastic to hear them
lyrically playing with the word families and seeing them transitioning this to their writing. If you get a chance, challenge them
to find a rhyming pair for any word you desire. Our next unit for the 1-2 students is to write a different ending to a short story
and present it using digital technology in a multimedia format. It will be great to see them using the technology to present
their work.
In math we have been doing lots of measurement; we have linked this skill into our science and have created tables to weekly
collect data on our ‘soil and nutrients’ experiment in the school garden beds. We are hoping to find out which is the best type
of nutrients to put on your plants, vegetables and herbs. So far the bed that has the seasol being applied to it is growing the
best. Unfortunately, as it sometimes happens with experiments, things haven’t all gone to plan: a crow decided to pull out our
basil seedling in one of the beds. We noted this in our table. We will continue to update you with our progress and will let
you know what the best type of nutrients to use on your gardens is.

to ClassroomTerm 3 has proven to be the busy term we predicted. In English, year 3 and 4 are now well into their second unit for
the term, and we are learning how we can use definitions from previous units to support our opinions when talking
about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories. We will then combine this with our ICT skills and create a
presentation to deliver to the class. Year 5 and 6 are comparing two stories from the author, Andy Griffiths. They are
learning how to identify the features they enjoy and will be creating a presentation for a panel discussion as to which
story they enjoyed the most and why.
Year 5 and 6 have progressed into data collection and using Excel to display their results. They have been learning
how to check their data using different formulas and how to change these to suit the information collected. Our final
process will be learning how to write formulas that will change the colours of the Excel cells, depending on the
information we put into these.
In Maths, we are still having a focus on number skills, including our times tables. In the last part of this term, we are
focusing on Measurement and Geometry. We have looked at how the different base units of litre, metre and grams
become millilitres, millimetres, centimetres, kilometres, and kilograms. We are now practising converting between
some of these units.
In Art, Year 5 and 6 have almost completed their sculptures of animals that symbolise themselves and their
personalities. They are getting ready to paint these and then photograph them in various positions around the
school.
Our kindy students have had loads of visitors in the last
few weeks. Some people have been here to observe the
great work done in the K to 2 classroom and others to
offer suggestions on things that are working well in other
schools. We are continually learning ways to improve our
kindy kid’s experiences.

Soccer Soccer with Sgnt Paul is on again this term, thanks to funding from the Sporting Schools Program.
The students are learning the finer skills of the game, not just dribbling, before Ravenswood’s
soccer day next term which will be held in Charters Towers.
P & C have had a very busy Term 3. Daily and fortnightly tuckshop has been very popular. We would like to thank Pentland
families for supporting tuckshop and also a big thank you to the staff for helping out with the orders.
We have successfully purchased a new freezer for the school tuckshop as well as a lunch fridge for the downstairs classroom
and a second microwave for the tuckshop. We have also donated money towards the upcoming school camp.
Last week we held a Disco to do some more fundraising.
This was a great night, with both kids and parents dressing
up for the event. Thank you to P & C volunteers for their
help organising and cleaning up.
We have one last fundraiser this term, which is a small
catering job next Thursday for a biosecurity meeting. If
anyone is able to help out in any way, please let me know.
A big thank you to our hard working Dads and Principal for
doing the work on the tuckshop. We are working on the
next step of preparation for the new mural...watch this
space 😊
Happy Holidays See you all in Term 4

Turkish delight ice-cream terrine
Ingredients
800g fresh ricotta cheese
3/4 cup (165g) caster sugar
300ml thickened cream
125g shelled unsalted pistachios
200g Turkish delight, cut into 1cm cubes
2 tablespoons rosewater
fairy floss, to serve
Rose syrup
1 cup (220g) caster sugar
1 tablespoon rosewater
A few drops of rose food colouring
Method
Lightly grease and line a 1-litre terrine or loaf pan with
plastic wrap or baking paper, leaving some overhanging the
sides.
In a large bowl, beat the ricotta and sugar with electric
beaters until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip the cream to
soft peaks. Gently fold cream into the ricotta mixture,
keeping as much air in the mixture as possible, followed by
the pistachios, Turkish delight and rosewater.
Fill the terrine mould with the ricotta mixture, packing it
down firmly. Cover with the overhanging wrap or paper,
then freeze overnight until firm.
For the rose syrup, stir the sugar and 1 cup (250ml) water
together in a small saucepan over low heat until the sugar
has dissolved. Cool, then add the rosewater to taste and a
few drops of food colouring until you have the desired
colour. When ready to serve, unwrap the top of the terrine
and turn out onto a serving platter. Decorate the top with
the Persian fairy floss, then slice and serve with the rose
syrup to drizzle over.
