peopleArchitecture is an art in which we dwell. It is a form that can be simultaneously private and public, experi-enced by the individual and by a community.

When applied well, architecture has the ability to edify, to rectify, and to illuminate our identities, our sur-roundings, our communities, and our natural world.

I love architecture because of this unique ability to not just simply exist around us, but to truly be a part of us. This interchanging and ever-changing trait propels me to continually study and pursue a career in architecture.

I hope that this experience is made manifest in my work and my design. I hope to design in such a way as to serve and edify the needs of people, to affect our communities well, and to respect the resources, the rites, and the importance of our natural world.

“building in the water”

Vatura Institute of Boat Building and Water Stewardship Columbo, Sri Lanka Jones+Hilton, Spring 2012

We are an institution committed to the education and edification of our people and our environment.

Deeply concerned with the economical, social, and ecological climate of the Sri Lankan people, the Vatura Institute of Boat Building and Ethical Fishery strives to imbue a love for ethics, sustainability, and human rights through a holistic education in craft and economics.

Our education teaches the art of boat building, the science of water, and offers the economic and ethical foundation needed to pursue personal entrepreneurial ambitions within the industry.

The unique connection of people and our environment has been the catalyst of our mission to persistently inves-tigate and perfect that integration. We believe at Vatura that through education, this goal can be made manifest.

‘the patch block’

The Patch Block LionFilmsProductionOffices Portland, OR Howard Davis, Fall 2012

Block 19 is unique to our area in that essentially the entire footprint of the block houses some kind of structure. Its char-acter speaks of an old, weathered Chinatown, however, it also preserves the beauty and grit of what the neighborhood once was.

The buildings on Block 19 need both aesthetic, interior, and seismic upgrades. In response to this apparent fact, my design addresses both a physical and aesthetic ‘patching together’ of the block. In an effort to preserve the street facade as much as possible, my building splinters the property, reinforces from the core, and addresses the street with a subtle, appropriate gesticulation.

The newly designed facades address the scale, grid, texture, and materials that define the existing buildings on Block 19. The design speaks of an already existing identiity, while offering a new take on the character and design within the community as a whole.

an architectural response to a wonderfully blighted neighborhood

“capturing the language”

Mexican Arts AcademyPortland, ORPoticha, WInter 2011

The simplicity of usable space is at the foundation of mexico’s architectural vernacular. simple geo-metric shapes, planes, and ‘the wall’ dominate the mexican style and creates an elegant complexity of aesthetic, layout, and emotion. from week one, my focus has been on emulating this same tactic while evading the tendency to become trite or kitschy. I was very conscious not to simply recreate mexican architecture, but rather to reinforce a familiar sense of identity while simultaneously creating a compel-ling foreign environment. I thoroughly studied the physical and metaphorical relationship and inter-actions of planes and geometric boxes to create that familiar emotion but in such a way as to incite curiosity and exploration.

“the synagogue of light”

The Synagogue of Light A Place of Worship, Eugene, OR M. Haight, Summer 2011

Because of their fractured and transient past, there has never been an official established ‘Jew-ish’ architecture or form. The only requirement for a place of worship: A Torah and a Congregation.

Throughout the design process, I have been in-spired by both the Tanach - the Jewish Holy Book – and the diverse history of the Jewish people. A verse from the Psalms speaks of God revealing Himself to those who are quiet and wait to see. Through manipulation of light, material and vol-ume, I attempt the create the quietest place in the city.

I have sought to make manifest the spirit of the religion and the people and how they so strongly connect with the past and continue strong into the future. I desire to foster reflection, introspection, and direction. The space uses light, volume, and mass to allow the user to feel safe, reflect on the past, and plan for the future.

Interests:fine arts

Much of my architectural design inspiration stems from my foun-dation in the study of fine arts. With the ability to draw, paint, and express an idea, emotion, or concept, I have been able to further explore a different way and angle in which to see architecture,

Places:The places in which I live, dwell, and pass through continue to define me. I feel compelled to capture fragments of these places, thus capturing an essence of my identity. My landscape creations are pertinent to my personal experiences, ob-servations, and realizations.
