Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Hessen Minister President Volker Bouffier
A STRONG PARTNERSHIP
On the anniversary of the 35-year-old sister-state agreement between Hessen and Wisconsin, the two governmental leaders signed a memorandum of understanding at Madison, Wisconsin, August 31, 2011. They reaffirmed the existing higher education relationship between universities in Wisconsin and Hessen, continuing the agreement signed in 1998.
"I am very glad to sign this memorandunm of understanding. We have both a strong economic and an academic tradition between Wisconsin and Hessen. When we look what we can do to make this partnership lively, one of the best things we can do, is bring young people together."
Volker Bouffier, Minister President of Hessen Madison, Wisconsin, 31 August 2011

With a history of more than 400 years, the Justus Liebig University Giessen places great emphasis on being truly international. This is reflected not only in our multicultural research and study environment, but also in our strong partnerships with foreign institutions, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marquette University in the U.S.
The U.S.-German Summer School in International and Comparative Law is the flagship of law programs in international high-quality teaching at the Law School.

! "With increasing globalization, the limitations of national legal systems become apparent. Comparative and international law provide insights into other national legal systems, and contribute to their coordination. The program does not limit itself to the law in the books: it makes comparison and intercultural exchange a reality.
! Meeting fellow students from other continents, experiencing the richness of cultural diversity, learning from outstanding teachers and from each other and building friendships - that's what our joint U.S.-German Summer School in International and Comparative Law is about. It's a true partnership, which is built upon decades of collaboration between Hessen and Wisconsin law schools."

! "Every year, young people from all parts of the world come to Giessen to participate in our International Summer School. In the past years, we were fortunate to welcome more than 300 students from many different countries. Each of the participants contributes his or her biography, motivation, interests, and much more. They all share a joyful learning experience in an international setting as well as intercultural exchange.
Besides teaching compelling, current and interesting content, we strive to establish networks that will benefit participants for the rest of their lives. CVs of former participants demonstrate that the program can have a crucial impact on career choices. International friendships are fostered and continue far beyond the Summer School."

"On behalf of myself I’m writing to express my appreciation of your outstanding summer school in international and comparative law. I would like to highlight the fact that the program was magnificently organized. Participants had all conditions to study and enjoy at the same time. Lectures were led by professional lecturers and they were really very interesting and interactive. As for myself, I learned a lot intricate issues in Business Transactions and Economic law, improved my legal English proficiency, made fantastic friends and explored two countries of EU, Germany and Belgium."

"My Summer Session in Giessen was an incredibly rewarding experience. Discussing international legal issues in a truly international classroom was a treat, one which I will never be able to recreate. But the greatest strength of the program was that it attracted students from all over the world who are genuinely interested in developing real international connections and the faculty and staff created an environment which constantly encouraged that process. After just four weeks, I now have friends working in the legal field in over 20 different countries! That is a gift I will never take for granted."
Matthew, 24, participant from the United States of America, 2011
