It’s time to take chargeDear reader,

Often, in times of hard-ship, most people tend tofind solace and comfortin God, our spiritualityand faith. Some believers would

say others ought to al-ways remember and place their trust intheir Creator; not only when faced with ad-versity.I acknowledge that when all goes well for

me, I sometimes forget to give as muchthanks as I ought to. Not that I ever takefor granted all my blessings, but I getcaught up in the whirlwind of life.My counter is that I’m only human. In the same way, I realise that there is

only somuchanotherhumancando forme. This I’ve learnt fromexperience, especiallythe times I’ve found myself completely atthe mercy of a higher power; such as whenI feltmy lifewas indangerorwhen I’ve anx-iously awaitedmedical results of tests donefor troubling ailments.

This, I regard as the point of surrender-ing, a powerful choice which, by virtue offreeing one ofworry and the need to alwaysbe in control of every facet of one’s life, pro-vides strength and serenity; and the abilityto soldier on.As Muslims worldwide prepare for Eid-

ul-Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice to markthe end of the Holy Hajj) on Friday, it is inthis same spirit of surrendering and ac-cepting things we cannot influence orchange.Equally important, but different to Eid-

ul-Fitr (the Festival of Charity to mark theend of Ramadan) which was celebratedabout twomonths ago, thisEidwill be a joy-ous occasion as well for the millions of pil-grimswho have completed their journey toMecca, but with a different significance.OnFriday,Muslimswill honour thewill-

ingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrificehis son Ismail (Ishmael) in obedience toGod, before God intervened to provide himwith a sheep to sacrifice instead (Qurbani).Eid-ul-Adha is incorporated in the pil-

grimage to Mecca; it is a time for Muslims

to learn the value of self-denial by makinga sacrifice of something living toGod – ulti-mately, total surrender to the will of God.Submission is one aspect; followed by

choices and actions that are not left to fate.God created us with brains, capable of cog-nitive thought and rational behaviour, andgave us an abundance of resources. We can sit back and allow life to carry

us – to a point. We can pity ourselves whenit seems the world has turned against usand everything seems to be going wrong.Or, we can be decisive and choose a posi-tive course.Wecanchoose to act andemerge fromout

challenges stronger. It is how we rebuild our lives after life

knocks us down that defines our character.I wish all Muslims Eid Mubarak.’Til next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by

Bike lanes on trackJUANITA WILLIAMS

THE bicycle lanes to accommodate pedal-powered commuters from Grassy Park toPlumstead via Victoria and De Waalroads are nearing completion.

Ward councillor Carol Bew says the cyclelanes are part of the Non-Motorised Trans-port (NMT) project. These will enable cyclists to ride from

Main Road, Plumstead through to VictoriaRoad, De Waal Road and on to Grassy Park.Bew says theworkmen are nearly finished

and the signs are up.“The City is always looking at ways to im-

prove the use of non-motorised transport todecrease the number of vehicles on the road. Some of the lanes use part of the pavement, and in other places the shoulder of the roadis incorporated and some new trees have al-so been planted near Plumstead cemetery.”MaycoMember for Roads and Stormwater

Brett Herron says: “The City remains com-mitted to the development of pedestrian andcycle facilities across Cape Town for all itscitizens. We want to make it safer for every-one to move across the city, whichever formof transport they use. Our future vision is acycle- and pedestrian-friendly city with awell-connected network of NMT infrastruc-tureproviding theopportunity towalk, cycle

or skateboard as far as you like on safe dedi-cated lanes.”There are 19 projects in various stages of

development, he adds.“The city was recognised this year at the

SustainableTransportAwards inUSA for itscommitment to building an integrated pub-lic transport system. People will be able towalk, cycle or take public transport to wher-ever they want to go.”The city-wide NMT projects are in the de-

sign, tender or construction phases and in-clude Military Road, Retreat and Vrygrond;Albert Road from Liesbeeck Parkway toAdderley Street in the CBD; Range Road,Blackheath; and Forest Drive, Eersteriver. The tenders are out for Rondebosch Com-mon and four other areas.Herron says theNMTnetwork has created

jobs through the Extended Public WorksProgramme (EPWP). “The cosmetic changesbrought about by the construction of cyclelanes and pathways also make a positive im-pact on the upliftment of areas.”The project has the added benefits of street

furniture – benches, speed bumps, raised pe-destrian tables, signage, landscaping, bol-lards and cycle racks.Herron hopes drivers will share the roads

responsibly and that the cycle lanes will bein use as training lanes for the next Cape Ar-gus Cycle Tour.

Wide, thin, loud people of DSTVWHEN DSTV starts running James Bondmovies back-to-back youknowsomethingis about to happen. Probably a price in-crease. Or perhaps it is compensation forall the channel changes we have had tocope with in recent weeks.

It’s been made worse by the fact that Ibought a new decoder to simplify recordingand enjoy some high definition TV.The new remote has 31 buttons and some

of them are multi-functional. In addition, there are two see-saw switches as well as up-down-sideways arrow buttons. All this in thecause of making things simpler and easier touse. Now pictures of all shapes and sizes appear

on the screen. There aresqueezed thin people and wide, fat ones. Some of them fill thewhole screen while others havebeen chopped away on the sidesor shrunk down to point whereyou are definitely not gettingyour money’s worth. The TVsupposed to do automatic ad-justments, but so is the decoder. One of them is bullying the oth-er, but I can’t work out which. There is an aerial extension to

the old-fashioned TV in the bed-roomand that now seems to pro-duce shrunken pictures squeezed in fromboth sides. It just can’t stand up to the over-

powering decoder.A dual view system might

solve the problem, but that isbound to bring with it a newset of buttons and problems. It is almost enough to make

one hanker for the old dayswhen there were no remotesand you had to get up to adjustthe volume. At least the tuningwas simple. Remember thoselittle drawers which onepulled out and then twiddledthe little wheels until the pic-turewas perfect? And,with on-

ly three programmes, decisions were easy. What annoysmemost, however, is the way

the DSTV people shout at you about theircoming programmes. They go on and on, re-peating the stuff in loud voices! Even worseis the way they increase the volume for theadvertisements. In my book that is a form ofabuse for which there should be fines. It reminds me of that late cosmologist, Dr

Carl Sagan, who also had a thing about loudadvertisements. In his book Contact he fea-tured a very rich man who had made a for-tune making and selling a device whichswitched TVs off when loud advertisementscame on. It was called Adnix. He followed itup with a new device called “preachnix” toquieten the tele-evangelists. That was not asuccess. Perhaps a device to take the hot airout of the mouths of politicians might haveearned more support. Is there some brightyoung inventor out there who can invent adevice to filter out the various forms of view-er abuse on DSTV?This raises the question of why we have to

put upwith somuchadvertisingwhenwepayso much for DSTV bouquets. I thought thewhole idea of pay TV was to get away fromthe advertising excesses on the free-to-airchannels.That said, thewide screenHDchannels can

be wonderful, but after the SA cricket tour toAustralia is over I will go back to one of theselect bouquets.

Police ‘brutality’ claimLUZUKO ZINI

ALLEGATIONS of brutality againstSteenberg police may be a ploy to de-flect attention from the goodwork theofficers have been doing.

Charges made against Steenberg policeofficers are currently being investigatedby the Independent Police InvestigativeDirectorate (Ipid).

The police watchdog believes these al-legations – which include those of severebeatings and torture – are headed for theWestern Cape High Court.

Steenberg Community Police Forum(CPF) chairperson Kevin Southgate be-lieves police have been doing a good job.

“We need to look at the source of thecomplaints because there are allegationsthat people lay charges to deflect atten-tion on cases being investigated by po-lice,” he says.

The investigation comes in the wake ofanother allegation of police brutality re-ported last week.

It has been reported that Steenberg po-lice have been assaulting people, andconducting searches and arresting peo-ple without the necessary warrants. Thepolice are alleged to have used baseballbats and hockey sticks to beat suspectsand even strip suspects naked and beatthem until they bleed.People’s Post reported separate inci-

dents of alleged police brutality (“Duo al-leges police brutality, 14 August) and (“Iwas ‘arrested, beaten’”, 17 July). In bothincidents officers from Steenberg PoliceStation were implica-ted in the allegedbrutality.

Warrant Officer Hermanus van Dyk,spokesperson for Steenberg police, couldnot give details of the investigation.

“We are aware of the allegations and

can confirm an investigation is happen-ing, but the disciplinary steps must takeits course. We refer all the cases to theIndependent Police Investigative Direc-torate (IPID) for investigation,” he says.

Southgate says while they feel the alle-gations are a way of shifting focus, theCPF is against brutality. “We do not sup-port any form of brutality, especiallyfrom the police, because the communi-ty’s rights need to be respected.

“We need to respect the law and let theinvestigations happen. If the police offic-ers are found guilty of brutality the lawmust be allowed to take its course.”

Basil Fortune (37) and 16-year-oldBrendon Feftus of Retreat (“Duo allegespolice brutality, 14 August) alleged theywere victims of police brutality. Theysaid they went to report the incident, butwere not assisted and made a complaintwith the Ipid.

Fortune said he was stopped by policewhile on his way to drop off church mem-bers.

“It was just after 19:00 and I was takingsome young members of the churchhome after a church activity. The policepulled up in front of us and demandedthat Brendon and I get out. We compliedwith their request and I showed them mylicence. The police searched us and start-ed assaulting us by punching Brendon inthe stomach. I was hit on the chest a cou-ple of times,” he said.

Emile Ely (18) said he was arrested andheld overnight at the Steenberg policestation (I was ‘arrested, beaten’, 17 July).

Ely said he was beaten while he was atthe police station.

Team-up to protect animalsIN THE LEAD up to Qurbani, the Capeof Good Hope SPCA has been workingclosely with the Muslim Judicial Coun-cil (MJC), the Halaal Trust and farmownerswhohave collectively committedto ensure this Eid-ul-adha – or “Eid ofSacrifice” – is held not only in accord-ance with the Muslim religion and cul-ture, but also in accordance with the An-imals Protection Act.SPCA Inspectorate Manager Moyo

Ndukwana says inspectors from theSPCAwill bemonitoring the transporta-tion, handling and housing of the esti-mated 5 000 animals destined for slaugh-ter as part of the annualMuslim festival.Local Muslim veterinarian, Dr Ayoub

Mohamed Banderker, says animal wel-fare organisations are often faced withcases of animal cruelty or neglect duringthe time of Qurbani, mostly due to inex-perience and lack of knowledge of laypersons who have little or no contactwith livestock, but nevertheless attemptto perform slaughters themselves.“Due to the sheer numbers of animals

being slaughtered during the three days, manypeople attempt to rush through theprocess, which is against the true spirit-ual significance of Qurbani or even Ha-laal slaughter. In order forQurbani to re-main true to its religious meaning andintentions, theMuslim communitymustadhere to the Islamic welfare laws andteachings formaintaining, handling andHalaal slaughter and, in so doing, therewould be no incidence of cruelty or ne-glect of animals”.The SPCA advises those who are inex-

perienced, but want to participate inQurbani, to make use of or request ad-

vice from approved Qurbani farms.People who wish to perform Qurbani

at their homes are urged to ensure thatanimals are slaughteredhumanelybyanexperienced person andmust obtain per-mission from their local City of CapeTown environmental health offices(www.spca-ct.co.za).In preparation for Qurbani, the SPCA

visited the main Qurbani farms in theCape Town area in an effort to educatethe owners on proper handling and hu-mane slaughtering of animals such assheep and cows. “All animals need to beprovided with adequate food, water andshelter and only experienced slaughter-ers should perform the slaughtering,”Ndukwana says.SPCA inspectors will be stationed at

Qurbani farms to ensure animals aresacrificed humanely and will offer topre- or post-stun animals to facilitatethis. The SPCA encourages pre-stunning of

all animals before slaughter and hopesthis will become the norm, rather thanthe exception.Transportation of animals to places of

slaughter is also a concern for the SPCAand the society will be monitoring thisduring Qurbani. They appeal to theMuslimcommunity

to ensure suitable modes of transporta-tion are used for livestock to prevent in-cidents of unnecessary suffering to ani-mals.For referrals toQurbani farmsor to re-

port alleged acts of animal cruelty, con-tact the SPCA inspectorate on(021) 700 4158/59 or after hours on083 326 1604.

Hajj: a holy experienceShahista Rohan-Toefy is aformer reporter who sharesher journey to Saudi Arabiadays before Eid-ul-Adha,more commonly known asthe “day of sacrifice”.

IT IS mere days before thehajj and people’s spirits arehigh.Everyone is excited and

anxious for the climax of thepilgrimage. Most of the people here, like

me, will be performing theirpilgrimage for the first timeand don’t know what to ex-pect. From what we are beingtold, it is a very strenuousjourney which entails lots ofwalking. It also is a very emotional

one.Walking is something I am

used to, butwhenyou’rewalk-ing in temperatures rangingfrom 36 to 40 degrees Celsiusamong millions and millionsof people, it certainly is nojoke. To top it off, most people

here have some sort of healthchallenge; in my case, I amthree months pregnant andtire very easily. For that reason I’m very

nervous about the impendinghajj. My hope is that I will suc-

cessfully complete my pil-grimage.Muslims take part in this

strenuous journey and hopeour intention will be sincereenough thatGodwill accept it.Once our hajj is acceptedwe’llbe sin-free and will be giventhe opportunity to continueour lives on a clean slate.Pilgrims normally come to

Medina and Mecca a fewweeks earlier to spend timepreparing spiritually to per-form the pilgrimage.Medina is known for its

peace and tranquillity as it iswhere the body of our ProphetMohammad (peace be uponhim) lies. It also is where twoof the Islamic leaders whosucceeded him are buried.Their bodies are buried ad-

jacent to an area known as theRauwda tul Jannah and it isbelieved that praying in this

area is equivalent to prayingin heaven itself. In Medina, the pilgrims

pray and pay their respects tothe Prophet (PBUH).In Mecca the Muslims visit

and circumbulate – or tawaaf– around the Kaa’ba, which isthe house of God. Muslimsspend hours just praying toGod here.Muslims believe prayers

are almost always answeredwhen made by the house ofGod.One of the most amazing

things about the hajj is thenumber of like-minded peoplegathering here.People from every culture

and race gather in this holycity and pray together andthis site is one to behold.

TASMIN CUPIDO

IT’S all systems go for thePelicanParkhousing de-velopment, which will house 3 200 families.

City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee member forHuman Settlements, Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, yesterday visited the site where both market housing(On The Vlei) and Gap housing (New Horizons) will beconstructed. It will also see subsidised homes, for peo-ple on the City’s housing waiting list, being construct-ed. This is said to be the City’s largest housing develop-ment to date (“Housing project finally launched”, Peo-ple’s Post, 16 October).Sonnenberg was on site to promote the Gap and open

market housing component of the development.“Above all, this is an integrated development, wherewe ideally want to see leveraged cross subsidisation,”he tells People’s Post.“The subsidy units also lever on Gap units, as it will

be of a better quality than units from previous develop-ments. It will not only have a better aesthetic look, butwill also be environmentally-friendly.”Subsidised homes will have underground electric

wiring, solar-powered geysers and overhang roofswhich will warm homes in winter and shade it fromthe sun in summer. “In previous developments subsi-dised homes had one ready board and residents wouldhave to use leads to have electricity in other rooms,”Sonnenberg says.“This development’s subsidised homes will have

sockets in every room.”He adds developer Power Construction is responsi-

ble for marketing of open market and Gap houses.“The City aims to ensure that cross subsidisation is

possible. Thismeanswewant the homes to grow in val-ue,” Sonneberg says.“We are trying to re-capitalise the poor so that, as

the home grows in value, the home owner can use itfor collateral to get a bond.”

Wrath of lawon cop killers?FIVE police officers were shot in theCape in recent weeks. Three were weregunned down inHout Bay andKhayelit-sha. Another was shot in Belhar and isreportedly in a critical condition. Andone was shot dead in Philippi at theweekend. People’s Post interns Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn and Luzuko Zini heardfrom readers if convicted police killersshould get harsher sentences. They alsotook the photos.

EQUALITY:Mailys Dagenfeels that po-lice deserve toget paid morefor the danger-ous job theyhave. She saysno matter whodies it is still alife lost andthe punish-ment shouldbe the same. “Ithink the sen-tence for kill-ing someoneshould be the same for all criminals – nomat-ter who your victim is – because a life is alife.”

ACTIONS: Zawa-di Dabephi Bedesays people whokill police offic-ers should getharsher punish-ment. “The gov-ernment shouldprovide moretraining for po-lice officers sothey can protectthemselves bet-ter in dangeroussituations.”

NO DIFFER-ENCE: Valerie dePauw says: “Itdoesn’t matterwhat job youhave; if someoneis killed theyshould receivethe same sen-tence. Whetherthey kill a cop oran ordinary citi-zen it should betreated thesame.”

IT IS MURDER: Eugene Sickle says policekillers should not be treated differently toothers. “The law should be harsh to anyonewho commits murder.”

FAIRNESS:Alistair Pe-tersen be-lieves thelives of po-lice officersare thesame as anyother per-son’s. “Ithink it mustbe fair. A po-lice officer’slife is notmore valua-ble thanthose of or-dinary SouthAfrican citi-zens.”

VALUE OF LIFE: Sandi Hendricks believesmurder is a sin. “A life is a life regardless ofwho you are. So sentences should be harshon everyone.”

PRAYER: Joseph Manuel says: “I pray everyday for the police because they work in dan-gerous conditions, so those people should re-ceive harsh sentences.”

Head start on readingLITTLE else can top the pleasure of open-ing a book – and pre- and primary school-ers inPhilippi cannowshare this feeling.

The Philippi Children’s Centre inWeltevreden Road now boasts a state-of-the-art library. This has been made possible by donations

from a bank and donors from the US and theNetherlands.Aptly known as the Stories forAfrica Chil-

dren’s Library, it was officially opened onFriday. It is housed in a wendy house on thecentre’s premises.Brightly-coloured books in different

shapes, types and sizes were donated by pu-pils of the Ojai Valley Kindergarten in Cali-fornia throughAfrica Incorporated – a chari-ty set up by Dana Young, the mother of aPhilippi farmer, six years ago. Young is ateacher at Ojai.“Our goal was 2 000 books. In three weeks

we collected over 3 400. Some were gentlyused, many are new. In America, the cost ofchildren’s books is reasonable and thereforeaffordable for almost everyone. Every childhas access to cheap books,” said Young. There are so many that each child at the

Centre will be given a book to keep at home.Other books in isiXhosa and Afrikaans willalso be stocked. The library forms part of an ongoing rela-

tionship between The Prince 2 for AfricaFoundation (Netherlands), First NationalBank and the Philippi Children’s Centre.Pearl Nel, FNB provincial marketing chair-person, said: “We believe this contributionwill help the children with the basic funda-mentals in learning.”Established 20 years ago, the Centre has

more than 200 children from farms and sur-rounding townships. The library will be un-der the care of a volunteer Rene Rinkwestof New Woodlands, Mitchell’s Plain

Spruced-up BMW X1 arrivesWHEELS24

SINCE its introduction in 2010, BMW hassold 4 800 units of its most compact X mod-el locally. In 2012 the X1 receives exteriorand interior enhancements along with arevised engine line-up.

The engine range comprises three petrol(sDrive18i, sDrive20i, xDrive20i andxDrive28i) and two diesel units (sDrive20d,xDrive20d and xDrive25d).

Depending on the model variant, power istransferred via brand-typical rear-wheeldrive or via the BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Either option is available tothree of the engine variants of the new BMWX1.

The new BMW X1 also offers customisationoptions in the form of three style packages –xLine, Sport Line and an M Sport package.

At the front the X1 receives changes to thehead and fog lights and increased body-col-oured painted surface areas. You’ll also no-tice a chromed accent across the top of a head-light while the indicators are now integratedinto the new side mirrors.

The rear of theX1 showsnewdesign tweaksalong the bumper, taillights and repositionedreflectors.

The front and rear surfaces painted in bodycolour now take up a larger area and new col-ours are also available.

The interior receives a number of changes. The side of the centre console is now shallow-er and finished in a new material while theaudio and climate controls have a gloss-blacksurface.

The new model comes as standard with astorage compartment in the centre of the in-strument panel. In vehicles featuring an op-tional navigation system, this houses the dis-play for the iDrive system. Chromed accentson the side surrounds of the onboard monitorhighlight this equipment feature.

The entry-level X1 sDrive18i is powered by

a 2,0 four-cylinder petrol capable of 110kW at6400rpm and maximum torque of 200Nm at3600rpm. Average fuel consumption is ratedat 7,7 litres/100km with CO2 emissions of180g/km.

The remaining 2,0 petrol units areequipped with the automaker’s TwinPowerTurbo.

The sDrive20i and xDrive20i models pro-duce 135kW at 6250rpm and 270Nm from 1250– 4500rpm, respectively, Fuel consumptionand CO2 emission figures are 7,1 li-tres/100km and 165g/km (sDrive20i) and 7,7litres/100km and 179g/km (xDrive20i).

The top-of-the-range petrol xDrive28iboasts output figures of 180kW/350Nm andcan sprint from 0-100km in 6,1 seconds. Fuelconsumption is 7,8 litres/100km and CO2emissions are 179 to 182g/km (depending onthe tyre format selected).

The four-cylinder diesel engines availableto the new BMW X1 offer a choice of two out-put levels and theTwinPowerTurbopackage.

The 2,0 diesel powerplant in the sDrive20dand xDrive20d, is capable of 135kW/380Nm.The sDrive20d has a claimed fuel consump-tion of 4,9litres/100km and 129g/km, whilethe sDrive20d has a claimed fuel consump-tion of 5,5 litres/100km and an emission rat-

ing of 145g/km.The top of the range 2,0 diesel (xDrive25d)

is capable of 160kW/450Nmrocketing thenewX1 from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. Fuel con-sumption in rated at 5,9 litres/100kmandCO2emissions are 154g/km.

All engines are coupled as standard with anew six-speed manual or can be mated to aneight-speed auto, with exception of thesDrive18i. The entry-level petrol option canbe coupled to a six-speed auto.

The new X1 marks the debut of Eco Promode for the compact crossover. The modesupports a economy-optimised driving styleby adjusting the accelerator mapping andshift characteristics of the auto-equippedmodels. The output of electrically operatedfunctions such as the seat heating, climatecontrol and exterior mirror heating are regu-lated. A display informs the driver of the ex-tra range earned through these measures.

All model variants come equipped withbrake energy regeneration. Manual modelsfeature an optimum shift indicator and stop/start function is available on all transmis-sions.

Four of the seven engines available to thenew X1 in South Africa can transfer theirpower to the road through xDrive all-wheel

drive. The top-of-the-range petrol and dieselengines are equipped with xDrive exclusive-ly.

As anoption, the all-wheel-drivemodel var-iants can be specified with the performancecontrol system for controlled braking alongwith torque compensation. This provides acorrective measure against understeering onslippery surfaces or in particularly spiritedcornering.

All models are fitted with 17” steel or alloywheels as standard. The range of optional al-loys in 17, 18 and now 19” spec has been ex-tended.

The xLine kit comprises design tweaks tothe front and rear, side skirt covers, air in-take and kidney grille slats. The kit adds spe-cial 18” alloy rims.

Inside, special BMW xLine lettering hasbeen added, a sports leather steering wheel, ambient lighting with varying colours, aswell as exclusive interior trim strips in cop-per. The xLine kit adds new leather seats.

Opel drops Astra for CascadaWHEELS24

OPEL has released its latest, what it calls,“all-season convertible” – a soft-topmodelbased on the Astra, but this time badgedCascada.

Following the launch of the new Adamhatchback at the 2012 Paris auto show, theCascada is the latest in anOpelmodel revivalthat also includes the Mokka mini-SUV andthe Ampera electric vehicle. Cascada goes onsale in Europe in early 2013.The latest in a long line of Kadett andAstra

cabriolets, this four-seater convertible, Opelsays, is also promising a sporty driving expe-rience. The Cascada has, what Opel describesas, a super-rigid body, it uses the automaker’strick HiPerStrut front suspension for moresecure cornering, and is fitted with aFlexRide adaptive damping system to help itlive up to its athletic claims.Compared to Opel’s previous cabriolet, the

AstraTwinTop, theCascada’s torsional rigid-ity is better by 43%. The Cascada’s wheelbaseis also 71mm longer and the front and reartracks wider by 56mm and 70mm respective-ly.The four-seater’s canvas roof can be operat-

ed at up to 50km/h and takes 17 seconds ineither direction. The roof’s electro-hydraulicmechanism is activated by a switch betweenthe front seats, but the system can also be op-erated from outside the car from the key fob.Inspired by classic grand tourers, Opel

says, the Cascada’s look is characterised bya clean styling, a gracefully arcedApillar andno visible roof top cover or rollover protec-

tion bar. When a roll-over or other severe im-pact is detected, high-strength bars are auto-matically deployed behind the rear seats.Malcolm Ward, Cascada’s director of exte-

rior design, says: “Most convertibles lookgoodwith the top down, butmany seem clum-sywith it up. Thanks to its high-quality, aero-

dynamically clean soft top with a perfect, seamless profile, the Opel Cascada also cutsa fine figure when closed.”Chromed finishes and LED daytime run-

ning lights complete the look.Prospective owners of the topOpel convert-

ible can also look forward to a range of luxury

treats including Nappa leather seats andhigh-end acoustic and thermal insulationsystems (thanks to a special layer of polyesterfleece tucked between the roof layers). Topsafety systems including adaptive front light-ing, side blind spot alert and the latest genera-tion of Opel’s Eye front camera system withnew functions.Cabin appointments include an electric

Ford’s fuel-saver – here’s the proofWHEELS24

A Ford Fiesta ECOnetic 1.6TDCi has won the 2012 ALDAutomotive/Shell FuelSaveMPG Marathon by clocking2,6 litres/100km over a600km route involvingtough, real-world driving inchallenging weather.

The annual event is a test offuel consumption for show-room vehicles which also dem-onstrates the financial benefitsof simple, smarter drivingtechniques. The 2012 routethrough the hills of SouthWales and the Cotswolds wasmade more challenging by abridge collapse and a trafficlight failure.Ford’s winning team, con-

sisting ofAndrewMarriott andAndyDawson, are former rallydrivers and beat their nearestrival by more than 2km/litre.The super-frugal ECOnetic

has an official combined fuelconsumption of 3,3 li-tres/100km and CO2 emissionsof 87g/km and, Ford says, proved that smarter drivingcan dramatically reduce thecost of running a family car. This year’s run was a 27% im-provement over its officialcombined fuel consumptionfigure.Ford’s ECOnetic technology

significantly assists the effi-

ciency of Fiesta and FiestaVanmodels by combining stop/start technology, combustionand calibration improve-ments, smart regenerativecharging and revised gear ra-tios, among other enhance-ments.A Ford Focus Titanium 1,0

EcoBoost also took part, withdrivers Paul and Doug Clifton, producing 4,56 litres/100km – anear 10% advance on its offi-cial combined cycle figure.A Ford Transit CustomT270,

crewed by Owen Wood and Ri-chard Powell of Ford’s UKTechnical Centre, was third inthe LCV category thanks to aperformance of 5,04 li-tres/100km – 37% better thanthe advertised figure.Event organiser Ross Dur-

kin commented: “This year’sMPGMarathonwill be remem-bered for bettering 100mpg(2,82 litres/100km). The aver-age improvement over com-bined cycle figures achievedbythe 27 vehicles in the 2012 eventwas a whisker under 16% – im-pressive by anyone’s stand-ards.“Manufacturers have done a

tremendous job of improvingthe fuel efficiency of all newcars and vans but driversshould see their published fuelconsumption figures as a tar-get to beat, not the maximumachievable.”

Company in nosedive aselectric cars fail in take-off

WHEELS24

ACOMPANYspecialising in electric-carbatteries – A123 Systems Incorporated –in Michigan, US, has filed for bankrupt-cy on Tuesday 16 October.

It has, the Detroit News reported, lost$900m since 2007 as the promised electriccar rush failed to gain traction.

Fuel prices in the US remain high, butbattery-car makers are struggling to con-vince Americans to buy cars that remainmore expensive than the petrol-poweredcars, despite large government tax credits.

Ford won R5,9bn in US government loansin 2009 to build fuel-efficient vehicles. TheFocus Electric is one – but only 228 weresold to September. The Focus Electric willonly be sold at 70 dealers in three states, though there are plans to expand to othersites next year.

Similarly, Nissan won $1,4bn in govern-ment loans to build electric vehicles andbatteries, but is expected to fall far short of

its goal of selling 20 000 electric Leafs in theUS this year.

Andy Palmer, Nissan’s executive vice-president for product planning, said: “Theuptake isn’t as strong as we first hoped. Wesee this as a marathon, not a sprint.”

Palmer added that Nissan was, however, not giving up on its plan to double batteryvehicle sales. It has sold 5 212 Leafs sincethe start of 2012 though there is now litiga-tion in the US over alleged misrepresenta-tive claims on the vehicle’s range.

Chrysler, which received nearly $60m ingovernment grants to develop more than100 hybrid bakkies and MPVs, in Septemberpulled all the vehicles after three overheat-ed. Chrysler will install new batteries be-fore it decides how many it will sell.

Also showing strain, Toyota – the leaderin hybrid sales with its Prius – announcedrecently it would not sell a new electric min-icar worldwide after earlier plans to sell itsEQ.

The car will now be available in limitednumbers in the US and Japan.

Another problem that has been identifiedis the limited availability of recharging sta-tions.

Plug-in hybrids, such as Chevrolet’s Volt, have a back-up petrol engine and these bat-tery-electric hybrids appear to be doing bet-ter in the marketplace, the Detroit Newsadded.

However, John Voelcker, editor ofGreen-CarReports.com, said it was important tokeep the problems in perspective.

He told the Detroit News these problemswere “predictable bumps in the road in thevery, very early stages of what will be a longand inevitable evolution to electrified vehi-cles”.

“Major powertrain changes for the globalauto industry – think, for instance, auto-matic transmissions or fuel-injection – usu-ally take a couple of decades to work theirway through the system,” he said. “Similar-ly, electric drivetrains – from hybridsthrough to plug-in hybrids and battery ve-hicles – will take a decade or more to reacheven noticeable volumes.”

Turnaround specialist Jim McTevia disa-greed. He said the battery car business wasin trouble. “Electric vehicles and batteriesare a tad premature. I think it’s going to bea long time before enough of the public iscomfortable where there is sufficient de-mand.”

A mandate by California to require majorautomakers to sell zero-emission vehicleswill help prod automakers to keep rollingout the cars. That state expects to have500 000 zero-emission vehicles on its roadsby 2025.

GM has reported strong sales of the Volt– 16 348 to September and three times whatit sold in the same period in 2011.

GM has offered hefty incentives on theVolt, which has helped boost sales, whileNissan has recently begun offering some in-centives on the Leaf.

GM also recently announced it is invest-ing $35m to build a Cadillac version of itsplug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant from late in 2013 for salein 2014.

Free matric revision on MXitTHEEducational ImprovementandStudyHealth (Eish) Team in partnership withthe Digital Media and Marketing Agency(DMMA) launched a revision series onMXit, “CellSchool”, designed especiallyto help this year’s matriculants ace theirexams.

The series consists of short video lessonsfor six key subjects, delivered by top teacherswho guide the Grade 12s through exactlywhat they need to study daily in order to suc-ceed in their final exams.

With forty 10- to 15-minute lessons forMaths, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences andEnglish FAL, and 20 each for Maths Literacy

and Accounting. The revision series coversall the key concepts in the Grade 12 curricu-lum. “CellSchool” tutors are available on MX-it from 17:00 until 19:00 daily to help learnerswith their revision questions. They alsoguide learners through practice activitiesand questions from past exam papers, ensur-ing that they are able to engage with the con-tent in the video lessons, practise until theyhave mastered it and then apply the knowl-edge in an examination context.

“It is a way of showing learners the efficien-cy of various digital media channels in educa-tion when it comes to transforming educa-tion,” says Anastacia Martin, Head of DMMATraining and Transformation.

During the exam period itself, “night-be-fore” guidelines for each exam paper will alsobe provided on MXit – including advice onwhat to expect in the following day’s exam, how best to approach each section, and howto ensure maximum marks.

“We’ve been experimenting with mobile(methods) as a way of delivering good qualityvideo lessons to learners at a very low cost,”says Eish content producer Lisa Blakeway,“and it seemed silly not to make the pilot con-tent available to the people who will benefitfrom it most – this year’s Grade 12s.

“We’ve shot the series especially with inex-pensive, small-screen cellphones in mind, and have compressed the content dramatical-

ly so that the associated data costs are as lowas possible for the end user – approximately20c for a 5-minute/2MB lesson segment.

“Anyone who can get MXit on their phonecan access the content. It’s all there already– it’s now just a matter of making matricsaware of it so that they may make use of it.”

To access “CellSchool” on MXit go to Trade-post, go to MXit Reach, go to Education andthen to CellSchool. For the full MXit matricrevision schedule visit www.studymate.co.zaor www.facebook.com/StudyMateSA.

BullseyeONE of the police officers was pregnant whenshe was shot dead nearly two weeks ago.

That brings thedeath toll to five after a totalof five officers were shot in recent weeks.

Hout Bay constable, Phindiwe Nikani (26),was pregnant when she was killed during aroutine patrol in Imizamo Yethu. She was re-portedly about to be married.

Her colleague, Constable Mandisi Nduku, was also shot and died in hospital later.

Before this incident, Mphumelelo Xakekile(50), was shot dead while ticketing a taxi nearKhayelitsha.

At the weekend, another police officer,Douglas Moses (50), was shot dead while onduty in Philippi. And a 29-year-old sergeant, shot in Belhar, is reportedly in a critical con-dition in hospital.

One man was arrested for Nikani’s killing.Provincial police commissioner Lieuten-

ant-General Arno Lamoer is quoted as sayingthe police will “never give up”, but “will stayfocused” on their task to protect the nation.

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has saidthere “should be no parole for the killers ofpolice”.

For those in mourning, these words cometoo little, too late. As their tears dry, life goeson for those now without a mother or father.

Being a parent, a child, husband or wife istheir first “station” in life. While many policeofficers go to extremes to live their calling asmen and women in blue, none should have togive their lives to serve and protect.

The question begs: have gangsters put abullseye on every police officer? Or is this aconfluence of a series of coincidences inwhich the bad people with firearms outshootthe good people with guns?

And what is national police commissionerRiah Phiyega doing to halt these killings?

Talk is cheap. Human life isn’t. Whetheryou’re a cop, a council worker or a corporateperson, everyone deserves to live to old age, safely.

It’s time wehelp ourselvesI WAS at a friend’s council flat inOttery recently when I heard a crythat brought back my youth.

Itwasahawkeronhorse andcart, selling produce with shouts of “aar-tappel, uiwe, tamaties en pam-poene”.

He encouraged housewives tobuy his wares.

Where have all our hawkersgone? Those business people who,for under the belt prices and on thebook, sold us food for the table?

Has legislation forced them to thegrant and begging queues? (Yet) wewant to create employment.

How many times have I and oth-ers written to those in power?

Need I remind those (for whom)we voted to use the vacant groundto start community vegetable gar-dens, so as to avoid crippling foodprices and create employment?

We do not see the hawkers as inthe past and the open ground standsas beacons waiting for someone tostart ploughing and planting.KEITH BLAKEOttery

Pelican Park development:remember backyard dwellersTHE Lotus River-Ottery-Grassy Park (Lo-gra) Civic Association welcomes the goodnews that the Pelican Park housing projectis finally getting off the ground (“Housingproject finally launched”, People’s Post,Tuesday 16 October).

Congratulations to all who worked tobring this to fruition. The project startedlong before Helen Zille became mayor ofCape Town, and was the one twinkling starin the dark night our backyard dwellershave to endure.

For years they heard the news that 10 000housing opportunities will be available atPelican Park. At last some of that numberwill be available.

Logra pleads that the housing authoritiesdealing with selection of beneficiaries notforget the backyard dwellers of Lotus River,Ottery and Grassy Park who pinned theirhopes for decent housing on this project.

Itwould be a travesty of justice should oth-ers be given preference over the people wholived in this area for decades waiting for ahouse.

Let’s see common sense prevail and thedream of a house, even in old age, becomea reality for those who contributed to the de-velopment of our communities, even whileliving in backyard structures.PHILIP M BAMLogra chairperson

Your SMSes. There is only some truth in the articleabout the Philippi Horticultural Area. There are also very important factors theyare not aware off. The farmers are strug-gling to survive with theft taking place. Allthe informal settlements are creeping clos-er. Eachweekwehave to pay thousands justto replace pumps to be able to irrigate ourcrops. Crops are being stolen to feed the“people”. Who pays the farmer for thosecrops? They don’t have a clue what our

monthly running costs are. Our municipalaccounts are around R50 000 a month andourworkers have free access to runningwa-ter and electricity without getting any freelitres, just because we are in a rural area.MeetwithPhilippi farmersandget the storystraight from the horse’s mouth. Mr NazeerSonday does not know what the impact ofhis words entails for the people who actual-ly pay to grow the produce! Philippi farmer

. Regarding the article on funeral poli-cies: go to a company that has been aroundfor a long time. I am with one that did greatfor my grandma in 1935. I’m very happy

with them. Unity, Wetton. To the guy who says Pitte is not that

harmless. How do you climb a high wall andsteal an engine block with one hand – be-cause Pitte has no fingers on one hand.

. Hello, hello los die (Princess) Vlei!

. My name is not on the list for a housein Pelican Park. I’ve been waiting since1992. How long must I still wait?

. I just hope and pray Princess Vlei willstay and I hope they will develop it cultural-ly and environmentally. Mrs Marshall

. I’m happy for the housing project, butwhere do we register?

. My sincere condolences on the lossof your amazingmother. I read your dedi-cation to your mom and it brought tearstomy eyes. You are so lucky to have sucha wonderful family. Your mom will al-ways be with you. I know; I lost my mommany years ago. Be strong and take care.André Gilbertson

. I regularly receive People’s Post andalways find it interesting reading yourcolumn. I am sorry to hear of the demiseof your beloved mother. Although I havenever met her I gathered from your arti-cles she was an extraordinary person.May Allah grant her the highest place injannatul fierdouz, nur in her qabr and re-ward her for all her good deeds. May Al-lah grant to you and your family sabr,

contentment and make things easy for all ofyou. Insha-Allah. Latiefa Nordien

. You are very blessed to have lived withsuch a beautiful person, as you describe inPeople’s Post of Tuesday 9 October. CapeTown needs so many more such mothers tohelp the youth avoid gangsterism, drug andalcohol abuse. Go well, as I believe you willbe a similar rolemodel for your own childrenas your mother was to you. Gerry, Hout Bay

. Our hearts go out to you on the loss ofyourmother.Wewishyou strengthandpeaceat this difficult time, a host of goodmemoriesto draw on, and the love and support of every-one around you.

In the past few years I have lost a number

of older close familymembers, but I have yetto lose mymother who is now 86. I dread nothaving her around as she is the keeper ofmychildhood and the historian of my life in somany ways. I can only imagine what youmust be feeling. Sandra Ellis

. My sincere sympathies in the passing ofwhat sounded like a true treasure fromGod.My heart (and I’m sure all other children ofall ages) goes out to you with the passing ofan unforgettable example in our lives.

May you be comforted by the fact she nolonger suffers and has found eternal rest. Insinging her praises, as you have done, it ispossible you have caused someone to stopand think of what they could be as a parent.

When her birthday or anniversary of thistime comes around each year, visit a spot ofbeauty in nature and picture her with you.It does eventually ease some of the pain.Blessings. Maggie James, Plumstead

. I know your column is an ode to yourmother in a way. These words came to mindas I remembered (my own mother and as)you describe your feelings: “I’mwriting eve-ry word with a broken heart that yearns formy mother”.

Mayyourmomrest in peace. (Tomymoth-er:) You taught me humility. I think of you;you are still a wonderful thing in my life! A“thing”, for now you live in me in spirit.Thank you, Mom, for all you taught me inyour short life.

The Lord keep you in peace. You are notalone, Feroza. I’m sure she is proud of you.Charlotte Nakana Zimpel

Province eyes illusive silverwareTASMIN CUPIDO

WILL this be the year the men inthe royal blue and white hoopedjersey finally put the Absa CurrieCup trophy in the cabinet at New-lands?

Many critics will answer “no” tothis question, but after an erratic sea-son, Allister Coetzee’s chargers havemanaged to defy the odds and findthemselves in the running to hoistthe trophy this weekend. This after defeating defending

champions the Lions 21-16 in thesemi-final at Coca-Cola Park in Jo-hannesburg on Saturday evening. They will now travel to Durban’sKings Park to do battle with theSharks on Saturday at 17:00.For the men from the Cape, the sit-

uation will remind them of the 2010Currie Cup final, when they playedthe Sharks at the same venue. Butthey will want to put the memory inthe back of their minds – they werethrashed 10-30 in that match, with a

young Patrick Lambie scoring 25 ofhis team’s points. As the WP squad prepares to do

battle in the Shark Tank, theywill besurenot towrite off theyoung flyhalf, who was instrumental in his team’s20-3 semi-final victory over the BlueBulls on Saturday.Coetzee’s men will also look to

draw from the positive and spiritedplay in Saturday’s win. A team bal-anced with youth and experience, aswell as heart and determination willsurely take to the field on Saturday. However, they will again miss the

leadership and presence of franchiseand Springbok skipper Jean de Vil-liers. Sidelined with a grade onehamstring strain, hewill not be fit forSaturday’s encounter. They will alsoremain without the services of hook-er Tiaan Liebenberg (back) and lock-forward Andries Bekker (toe). They will look to players such as

Gio Aplon, Bryan Habana, Juan deJongh, Eben Etzebeth and captainDeon Fourie to lead from the front, while season performers Skarra

Ntubeni,Marcel Brache andDemetriCatrakilis will look to make theirmark in the match.Coetzee remains positive his

chargers will be competitive againstthe Currie Cup season’s in-form side.“We’re keeping the week as normalas possible and we’re all looking for-ward to the weekend,” Coetzee re-portedly said.“There has to be a favourite and an

underdog (in every game) and we’reup against the team that ended top ofthe log and is playing at home. Butwe know what we’re capable of andthat’s all that matters to us.”In addition to the senior team chal-

lenging the final, theProvinceunder-19 and under-21 teams will also dobattle in the division finals. The under-19 chargers will meet

the BlueBulls after beating the Lions24-14 in Stellenbosch on Saturday, while the under-21s will also faceBlue Bulls following a 19-18 win overthe Sharks. Both finals will be cur-tain raisers to the senior final at theShark Tank.
