The police say a man called the station tosay he wanted to clear his conscience. Hewas allegedly stabbed by the victim threeyears ago and told the police that a bodycould be found on Baden Powell Drive. The suspect is in the Eastern Cape. He
and two other suspects have not yet beenarrested, pending additional investigation.Goss says the suspect could not pinpoint
the exact location of the body.“Police from both Strandfontein and
Philippi were in the bush for three daysstraight looking for the man,” he says. Thevictim was finally found by a passerby.Goss says the bush poses a big problem.“A large area is covered by bush and this
is the third body found in the bush sinceSeptember. The area is isolated, quiet andvery dark,” he says.Bush can be found along Lukannon
Drive, Baden Powell Drive, Witsands Roadand Spine Road, among others.“This is getting out of hand; criminals are
using Strandfontein as a dumping groundfor bodies because of all the dense bush,”
says Strandfontein Community Police Fo-rum chairperson Sandy Schuter.“We have requested that the City of Cape
Town get rid of the bush for a long time be-cause of this very reason.“We have also fought for sufficient light-
ing on Baden Powell and Lukannon drivesand other dark areas where our residentslive as it becomes an element for criminalactivity.”The City was not immediately available
for comment but says they are “looking in-to this matter”.Schuter says that the forum condemns
any form of criminal activity.“Being at the scene made me realise the
mindsets people have – to think nothing ofa person’s life.“Communities need to start looking after
each other, be more vigilant, come out oftheir comfort zones and become actively in-volved in the community. Being active isn’tbeing active on social media – there areenough thumbwarriors, we needmore footsoldiers on our streets.”V Share your thoughts. Rowdy marchshouts for peaceSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
Blaring sirens in thebackanda loudhailerin the front . . . And so the residents
marched forward to bring peace and unityto the streets of Woodlands.Following an increase in gang tensions
and violence in the area, the Community Po-lice Forum subforum for Lentegeur sector 4arranged amarch to stand up against the re-cent spike in gang-related murders. On Saturday a group of residents picked
up banners, posters and flags to marchthrough the streets.Sector 4 chairpersonKaamilah Ismail said
she was disappointed that fewer people par-ticipated than she anticipated.“The march has been in planning for the
past two months and we were expecting agood turn out despite the badweather. Itwaswell organised and we are disappointed butwe are positive,” she said. The march was supported by fire and res-
cue services, metro ambulance services, lo-cal police and the CPF. Project coordinatorAnthea van derVent said on Saturday it wasimportant to get all roleplayers’ participa-tion in the march.“The role of the ambulance and fire and
rescue services here today is to educate resi-dents. Many times the residents call on thewrong people when they are in need. For ex-ample, when a woman is giving birth theycall thepolice insteadof theambulance,” shesaid.Ricardo Carrolissen, a firefighter linked
to the Ottery fire and life safety educationsection, agreed.“We have come here to show our support
but also educate residents on our role as the
fire department. Following the scourge offires in the community we need to educatepeople about fire safety. We are involvedwith more than just fires. We respond to ac-cidents and crime scenes and we are a sup-port service to the police. We work hand inhand with other emergency services,” hesaid.Various schools also participated in the
march. The march was led by the drill team of the
Mitchell’s Plain Skills School. It started inIris Street and followed streets throught theflats in Woodlands. The organisers wanted to make as much
impact as possible during the 30-minutemarch. Residents came out of their housesclad in gowns and slippers, wanting to knowwhat was going on as the sirens rang in theempty streets. One residentwhowishes to be knownonly
as Michael says he was still in bed when hecame out to see what was happening.“I thought maybe it was another shooting
and came to seewhat was going on. The nextthing I saw was all the blue and red lights,”he said.He added that the sign of force was just
what the community needed and he wel-comed the idea. The march ended at the Woodlands sports
field where a family day was held to furtherpromote peace and unity among the Wood-lands residents. The event was organised bythe subforum to follow the march, which al-so acted as an announcement to those whocould not be informed before the fun day.See more on page 11.

Burglars hit womenSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
An elderly Eastridge woman is fed up withthree people who steal from the homes
of single women. The woman has asked to keep her identity
a secret as she fears for her safety after nu-merous break-ins at her home.
“I have lived in Eastridge for 32 years andI have always lived alone,” she says.
Since the beginning of the year her homehas been burgled four times and she sus-pects this spate of burglaries can be linkedto the same people.
She says that the modes operandi con-firms her theory that the two men and awoman – all her neighbours – are behind it.
“I think that the woman keeps watch to seewhen I leave my house, because when I getback my house has been broken into,” shesays.
She says that the homes of numerous sin-gle women in her immediate area have beenburgled and she believes these same peopleare responsible.
The two men are in their late 20s or early
30s and operate at any time of the day, shesays.
“They usually work with a woman andthey can strike anywhere, not only in Eas-tridge,” the 78-year-old says.
In a recent incident, the businesswomanlost thousands of rands after her home wasburgled.
“They took tables, wiring, fluorescentglobes, windows, a tablet and various otherthings from the house on Wednesday 20May,” she says. The police confirm it is be-ing investigated and that no arrests havebeen made so far.
The woman says she wants to encourageneighbours to look out for one another.“When I am not at home, my neighboursdon’t watch my house. But I watch theirswhen they are away,” she says.
She encourages compassion in keepingeach other safe.
“These criminals are so determined thatthey bent my steel burgler bars to get to mystuff,” she says. “Only if we look out for oneanother will it truly be safe.”V Share your thoughts with us. Starting with the word“Mpost” SMS your views to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

Rescuer Robin rewardedThe National Sea Rescue Institute
(NSRI) honoured crew member RobinFortuin this month as he was formallyawardedwith theGallantryAward, silverclass in a ceremony at the NSRI Strand-fontein rescue base.Fortuin was also awarded the depart-
ment of transport’s South African searchand rescue Meritorious Award for “dem-onstrating extremebravery, courage, self-lessness and exceptional skills during asearch and rescue mission”.The awards are in recognition of his
tireless efforts to save the lives of sixswimmers who were swept out to sea bya riptide atMonwabisi Beach on 1 Decem-ber 2013.His family, friends and the crewofNSRI
Strandfontein celebrated this acknowl-edgement with him.An experienced rescue swimmer from
Muizenberg, Fortuin trained with theNSRI Strandfontein crew for seven yearsand currently works as a lifesaver in AbuDhabi. The 23-year-old Fortuin returned home
to receive his award and also to film a re-enactment of the dramatic rescue.Sadly, a seventh bather lost his life that
day, as he went under before Fortuincould reach him. “I will never forget thatday. I managed to save six people, but Iwill always remember the soul that waslost. I don’t believe one can ever get usedto it when a life is lost, but it is a realityof the job.” says Fortuin.“I am grateful for the love and support
[I get] from my family. Volunteering oftenmeans that I get to spend less time withthem. I also have to give credit to the amaz-ing crew at NSRI Strandfontein, because I
would not have been able to do what I didwithout the support and guidance from mycrew. Everyonewho had a hand inmy train-ing prepared me to deal with the pressures
of the day. These awards are for them aswell.”Volunteers atNSRIStrandfontein are re-
sponsible for their own physical fitness tomeet the demands of the job. They oftenhave to deal with physically high-risk situ-ations, such as the rescue which Fortuin– only 21 years old at the time – was in-volved in.The crew are also faced with strain on
their mental and emotional well-beingwhile performing their duties.NSRI Strandfontein’s station command-
er, Mario Fredericks, says he is proud ofhis crew and hails them as valuable assetsto the community. He says that this levelof commitment is exactly what they lookfor and need from their volunteers.“Volunteering for Sea Rescue requires
the commitment to consistently report forduty each Sunday and the onus is on eachcrew member to focus on developing theskills needed to effectively deal with anemergency.Fortuin, fully committed tohistraining, and the senior crew who trainedhim, can be proud of his achievements,”says Fredericks.“I am very proud to be part of NSRI
Strandfontein. The crew is committed andit is with their help that heroes like Robinare born. Even though Robin did this res-cue alone, in the bigger picture, this wasa team effort.”NSRI Strandfontein works every day
with 17 volunteer crew and 15 trainees, allof whom come from surrounding commu-nities. Trainees have to study for an aver-
age of one year to qualify as crew. They com-mit to training duty every Sunday and areon call at all hours to respond to emergen-cies.

Each year, seven days are dedicated to raising awarenessabout the rights and needs of children.
This week marks National Child Protection Week, which focuses on some of our most vulnerable citizens.
It’s a time for us to take a long hard look at the abuse, neglect and exploitation of our children. We are remindedof the need to protect them.
Violence against women and children often goes unno-ticed as it is hidden and rarely reported. Girls and boyscan be victims of violence in the home, at school, in thestreets, in the community or even in the custody of thosewho are meant to protect them.
Despite our sophisticated legal framework, South Afri-ca is still marked by high levels of violence against, andexploitation of, children, according to Save the ChildrenSouth Africa, a non-profit organisation promoting chil-dren’s rights.
The organisation estimates that between 2011 and 2012,during which research was carried out, over 50 000 chil-dren were victims of violent crime, over 12 500 of assaultand almost 26 000 of sexual offences.
In 2011, a study by the South African Human RightsCommission and Unicef found violence against childrenoccurs on a large scale and in any of the settings wherechildren spend their childhood – in homes and with fami-lies, in schools, care and justice systems, workplaces andcommunities. The report found that 1 in 3 parents use se-vere corporal punishment in the form of beatings. Almost30% of all sexual offences against children involve chil-dren under 10 years of age.
But with these shocking numbers, how can we settlewith only seven days of awareness?
It falls to each and every one of us to take responsibilityfor our children and to keep them safe.
Every day needs to be dedicated to protecting our chil-dren, not just one week.

Gun tracking is ‘impractical’NICOLE MCCAIN
@nickymccain
A section of the Firearms Control ActAmendment Bill is in the firing line.
The amendment proposes a new trackingsystem for guns by rolling out the use of mi-crodots and ballistic sampling.Within a year of the date of the bill, police
will have to have all firearms logged. Theballistic loggingwill then be rolled out to thesecurity industry and lastly to private gunowners during their relicensing.
StriationsBut firearm owner and dealer Alan Mar-theze says ballistic sampling is a measurethat only works faultlessly on TV shows, asstriations on a cartridge do not remain thesame indefinitely.Ben Coetzee, arms management project
manager of the Institute for Security Stud-ies, says the striations on a cartridge willchange with use over time.
“They can also be altered because of rustfrom a lack of maintenance and care or evenby cleaning the weapon with brushes andscrapers that are harder than the surfacesthey are used on,” he explains.Traceability Solutions’ Kyle Parker, who
specialises in the marking, managementand reporting of weapons, says it is not diffi-cult to purposely alter these striations.Using microdots to trace firearms is just
as impractical, Martheze believes, as stan-dard gun cleaning will easily removemicro-dots over time.
ImplementationThe implementation of the amendment billposes challenges too, Coetzee believes.Testing firearms will require them to be
brought to a specific testing location.“The most serious concern is the number
of firearms that will be congregated at a spe-cific point for the test to be performed. Secu-rity during these tests will be a nightmare, and every person that is on his way to the
test site will be at risk,” he says. The manpower to carry out tests is also
lacking. With an estimated 2.5m privatelyowned firearms, it would take years to carryout the process, Coetzee estimates. This year, a similar law in the United
States was repealed after attempts to imple-ment an imaging database for 15 years. Thelaw was described as “simply not working”.
AlternativesParker believes there are other solutionsthat will be easier to implement if manage-ment issues are ironed out.“All the weapons (over 99%) in the police
are marked with our technology. Use whatis marked now and get a tighter grip on thepolice as well as private security and civil-ian weapons,” he suggests. The proposed sampling will have signifi-
cant impact on legal firearm owners, saysJohn Welch of the South African Gun Own-ers’ Association. “The firearm owner is sup-posed to supply at least five rounds of ammu-
nition for ballistic sampling. Some ammuni-tion is priced up to R2000 per cartridge.Collectors’ pieces are to be kept in pristinecondition and are not to be fired,” he says.
Ballistics still neededAlthough the process will have significantcosts “with little return on investment”,there is still a place for ballistic sampling.“There are many different uses for fire-
arms and taking ballistic samples may helpto recover these firearms or at least contri-bute to the process of linking the firearm toa crime,” Coetzee says. The process may also be a deterrent to
criminals but there is not likely to be a sig-nificant decrease in firearm-related crime,he says.“I cannot reconcile the idea of a legal fire-
arm owner shooting people and then goinghome to lock their registered firearm safelyin the SABS-approved safe in his home. I al-so do not think the criminal will care if hisfirearm was ballistically sampled.”

Saturday’s unique Carnival Race Day of-fers more quality and variety than hasever been seen at Killarney, so there
has been a build-up of expectation amongpetrol heads. The on-track action includes the Cape
round of the All-Africa 3-hour endurancerace series, that is due to finish in the dark,a leg of the South African Superkart Cham-pionship and round four of the Power Seriesfor cars andmotorcycles sponsoredbyWing-field Motors.A parade of VW Beetles in honour of its
80th anniversary (the prototype was un-veiled in Germany in 1935) will take placeduring the lunch break, with the lucky win-ners of the high speed laps of the track ina racing sports Porsche competition, due toreceive their award shortly afterwards. There will also be a display of motorcyclestunt riding. The day will also feature an exotic and
sports car show that includes several histor-ic motorcycles under cover in the spaciousnewpit block. The popular EngenF1 simula-tors will be available to budding Lewis Ha-milton imitators in the same building. Out-side, a multifaceted funfair and amusement
park is going to offer rides and entertain-ment of a different nature, on the adjacentparking area. While entries for the 3-hour race include
six Porsches (all of them with two or eventhree drivers) the battle upfront ismore like-ly to be fought between a trio of Junos, aDodge Viper and possibly a Panoz Esperan-te.The formidable Juno attack is being led by
Western Cape champion Francis Carru-thers, with co-drivers Nick Adcock andDean McCarroll in an SS3 V6.They will have to face up to Craig Jarvis
and Marcel Angel in Jarvis’ recently ac-quired V10, 8.4 litre Dodge Viper and anAmerican V8 Panoz Esperante being sharedby Dave Alhadeff, Jonathan Bernstein andChris Carolin.Any gap upfront will allow the remaining
Juno SS3s (of Steve Humble/Johan Engel-brecht andColin Plit/Dawie Joubert) or per-haps even aNissan 370Z (in the hands of Jus-tin Mathie and Gary Sherrat) to take up thechase. Interesting entries have been re-ceived from Mark Lauth/Mike Verrier in aShelby CanAm, while Greg Mills is teamedwith top lady driver Andrea Bate in a Pill-
beam MP 98 that was originally conceivedfor the world’s most famous 24-hour race. Ofcourse the time spent refueling and chang-ing drivers during pit stops, as well as thefinal hour of racing in the dark could alsoinfluence the outcome of this Le Mans styleevent. Then there’s the potentially awesome
spectacle promised by the Superkart races. The driver’s backside is nomore than a cou-ple of centimetres off the ground in these ti-ny projectiles that have no suspension andwheels the size of doughnuts. However, they are powered by 250cc mo-
tors with six-speed sequential gearboxes. This allows them to attain speeds of morethan 200 km/h on the back straight and lapquicker than even themightyWesbank V8’sof a couple of years ago.The always hard-fought Bold Marine GTi
Challenge race is expected to be one of thehighlights of the Power Series section of theprogramme.YoungMarco Busi and Christopher Swart
swapped places at the head of the field lastmonth and they should be the ones to watchon Saturday. While the 15-year-old JoshuaDolinschekwill be looking for a repeat of his
recent single-seater Formula Libre victory, the battle in the Mutlu Batteries ClassicCars and theCarsUnlimitedFineCar events– that includesDaveRowley’s rare, modifiedVW Beetle – is expected to be much closer. With the first race scheduled to start at 10:00,the African 3-hour is the final event on theprogramme and is due to get under way at16:15. Admission is R60 for adults and R20for children under 16. There is no charge forchildren under 12. Tickets are also availablefrom Computicket.
Porsches, Junos in endurance
Petrol heads can look forward to great racing at Killarney on Saturday.
