Interchangeupgrade isready to ridePUBLIC transport is getting a
R321 million face-lift.
A growth in demand is forcingthe City to upgrade the public trans-port interchanges over a five-yearperiod.
There will be a specific focus on25 interchanges, which the Citysays are “places where transportservices meet”.
Mayoral Committee Member forTransport Brett Herron says theproposed upgrades will ensure thattransport is “accessible and inclu-sive, providing links between thecommunities and employment, ed-ucation, health, community servic-es and other services”
Herron adds these upgrades willensure the transport interchangesbecome “ interesting social spacesand lively parts of the City”.
This improvement programmeforms part of the City’s MobilityStrategy, which supports the devel-opment of a balanced transport sys-tem.
It focuses on all elements of trans-port.
The City currently has over 213public interchanges of different siz-es and functionality. These facili-ties are located along the rail- androad-based public transport net-work where commuters can changebetween different types of transpor-tation. “Over 54% of our commut-ers depend on public transport, whether by road or trains. As a re-sult, most of the public transport in-terchanges are overcrowded due togrowth in demand over the pastyears. They need to be expanded ur-gently,” says Herron.
The 25 projects, including park-and-ride facilities at five inter-
changes to be implemented over thenext five years, are in various stag-es of development.
A number of the projects are cur-rently in design, tender and underconstruction. Upgrades are sched-uled at the following interchangesin the Cape Town CBD, Mitchell’sPlain, Lentegeur, Du Noon, Retreat,Wynberg, Bellville and Nyanga.
New interchange projects arescheduled for Kuyasa, Bayside,Somerset West, Imizamo Yethu,Masiphumelele, Nomzamo, SamoraMachel, Scottsdene, Wallacedene,Makhaza, Nolungile, Macassar,Durbanville and Vryground.
A number of interventions – fromthe creation of new facilities to up-grades of existing facilities to meetincreases in demand – will be inves-tigated to ensure integrated pre-cinct developments.
Precinct developments includeprovision of signage, close-circuitTVs and surveillance facilities, lighting, landscaping, integrationof trading facilities and health facil-ities.
Herron states that “once the proc-ess for acquiring professional serv-ice providers and additional capaci-ty is completed, the affected sub-councils, ward councillors andaffected communities will be con-sulted on the design and plan for thefacilities”.
The City will pay particular at-tention to commuter safety of com-muters at interchanges. To this end,a dedicated law enforcement unitwill be deploye.
A tender will be issued for serviceproviders to keep these environ-ments clean, while therewill alsobeon-going maintenance of the inter-changes to prevent vandalism.

Dear reader,
Thank you for your heartwarming, inspirationalresponse to my column last week.
As touched as you have been by my story aboutmy mother’s life with cancer, so too have I beenmoved and inspired by your personal accounts.Your triumphs, challenges and the noble workmany of you are doing in raising awareness aboutcancer, and funds for the treatment of this disease, are truly inspirational.
I commendyou for the courageand strength you have shown inyour own personal experience ofcancer and the journey you havewalked or continue to undertakewith those you love, in the faceof a very challenging illness.
I have drawn much strengthand inspiration from youremails, letters and SMSes andfeel humbled by your kind feed-back. Enlightened by yourprayers and positive thoughtswhich I have conveyed to mymother, I have learnt much in ashort time, and my acceptancearound the process of life andloss has begun to grow. The“now” matters more than any-thing else and realising this, helps to enrich my interaction with my mother andother people who share my life. I continue to regardmyself as very blessed to have both my parents.
All of us at People’s Post have been so touched byour readers’ responses to “My mother, my hero”that we are publishing them elsewhere in this edi-tion of People’s Post.
An issue close to my heart is the welfare and em-powerment of women and I am looking forward toattending the 1 000 Women United Against DomesticViolence luncheon, organised by the Wheat Trustthis week. This annual event takes place on Thurs-day at the Cape Town International ConventionCentre and will see 1 000 women from different back-grounds take a stand against domestic violence; to-gether with the Minister of Science and Technology,Naledi Pandor, Minister of Women, Children andPeople with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana and poet
Bulelwa Basse.Domestic violence is cited as the second biggest
pandemic women in South Africa face after poverty, with 90% of South African women experiencingphysical or emotional violence in their homes everyday.
When confronted by this alarming statistic, I be-lieve that it is encumbent on all communities to con-cern themselves with the safety, security and well-being of every woman and child in this country.
To this end, the work and con-tinued survival of organisationssuch as the Saartjie BaartmanCentre (SBC) for Women andChildren, is of paramount im-portance.
I had the privilege of workingat this centre a while back andwitnessed first-hand the extentof love, support and empoweringopportunities given to the manyabused women who find theirway find there. Organisationssuch as SBC are often the onlylifeline for countless abusedwomen and their children, mostof whom have nowhere else togo.
Of the many heartbreakingstories I’ve heard, I was mostsaddened by the story of an eld-
erly woman whose husband began using Tik andstarted beating her relentlessly. I’m familiar withthe facts around domestic abuse; that it not only af-fects young, poor and unemployed women, but hear-ing this woman’s story was particularly painful. How sad to see your golden years out this way.
I apologise if my column tends towards more seri-ous issues presently, with my only light observationthis week being an admission of guilt: I have notbeen running for two weeks and know that I’ll behuffing and puffing through my planned 10km raceon 27 May. Let the games not begin.
Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column, by People’s
Post Editor, Feroza Miller-Isaacs who can becontacted on [email protected]

THE heartbroken mother of amissing 12-year-old boy has notgiven up the search and contin-ues to believe that her son willcome home.

His mother, Fatima Jacobs, wasunder the impression that her sonwas playing in the court, but at ap-proximately 10:10 when Fatimacalled him, he didn’t respond.
“He’s always just outside thehouse and when he goes away, heis usually just in the block of flatsand comes in at 19:00 or so, but thistime there was no sign of him,”Jacobs stuttered. Rumours spreadthrough the community that Moe-gamat was seen walking in KalkBay, which sent family membersand police on a “wild goose chase”.
“We had a bit of hope and his un-cles still visit Kalk Bay regularly totry and find him. So we don’t knowif it’s rumours or if it’s true, but wewill do anything to find him,” says
Jacobs. At the time of his disappearance,
Moegamat was wearing a navy bluetracksuit pants with a light bluestrip, navyblue sweater, rain jacketand blue, green and yellow boots.
Before shedding a few tears,Jacobs says: “Wherever he is, who-ever might have him, can he justcome home safely, because we aresick knowing that he is missing andwe really are feeling the effects ofnot having him around.”
Warrant Officer Hermanus VanDyk, spokesperson for SteenbergPolice Station, confirmed that Moe-gamat still has not been found, but“no foul play is suspected”.
“There is still a search on for themissing boy and we will continue todo what we can to track him down,”says Van Dyk.

Safe ride orfresh air?SUMMER JACOBS
RAIL commuter safety is in ques-tion after a Dutch man lost an eyewhen he was struck by a rock flungthrough an open window. The Pas-senger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa)says travelling with an open trainwindow is a matter of commutercomfort and not safety. People’sPost heard whether readers sharethese sentiments.
BETTER EQUIPPED: BusisiweSikhayi says: “If air conditioning wasinstalled in trains we wouldn’t havethe problem of people getting injureddue to open windows. We can't prevent the actions of those outside thetrains, but if we had proper facilitieson board it would be a much saferand smoother ride for commuters.”
Photos: Summer Jacobs
HEALTH HAZARD: “In the olddays the MetroPolice were always visible ontrains,” says Sidney Adams.“They built smallpolice stationson many stations, but theyare not beingused. Also, thewindows can’tbe closed at alltimes due to airborne sicknesses such as fluand TB. Thereshould be constant fresh aircoming in to prevent health hazards.”
LUCKY: Shahieda Isaacssays: “I don’ttake publictransportbut fromwhat I hear itis very bad.I’m lucky tobe chauffeuredaround and Ihave the luxury of opening and closing windowswhenever Ilike withoutworry.”
SAFETYFIRST: TulileMzinyatisays: “Forsafety purposes I feelthat the windows shouldbe up at alltimes, especially duringwinter.”
SAFETY OVERCOMFORT:Charles Abrahams says:“Windowsshould be upat all times.Sometimespeople don’tthink and theydo silly thingslike throwingstuff at moving trains.Sometimesyou have tosacrifice comfort for safetyand this is oneof thosetimes.”
KEEP ITFRESH:CherylWesselssays: “I don’tlike a closedwindow on atrain. Whenit gets full itcan becomequite claustrophobic. For my personal comfort I preferan open window with afresh breezeblowingthrough.”
PERSONAL CHOICE: Ivor Britz says: “It is a matter of preference. I would prefer an open window for fresh air.”

Still not up to scratchDISTRIBUTION of chronic medica-tion is still not up to speed.
The Department of Health has out-sourced delivery of chronic medicationto a private pharmacy company, UTiPharma.
In a statement, the department says, however, the packaging and delivery ofchronic medication to health facilities –especially in the Metro – is still not oper-ating at full capacity. These delays haveled to long queues at some clinics, saysthe department.
It says the transfer of the chronic dis-pensing unit which handled around180 000 prescriptions to a new serviceprovider UTi Pharma is “an enormousundertaking” posing many challenges, particularly the transfer of patient pre-scription data from the previous provid-er to the new provider.
Progress is being made, the depart-ment says, but it is anticipated that theprocess will only be fully completed bythe end of July.
Western Cape health minister TheunsBotha stresses this will be the first prov-ince in the country to roll out a medica-tion delivery service. He points out thatbreaking new ground comes with teeth-ing problems. “This is such an excitingproject because it represents our govern-ment motto of ‘Better Together’.”
Once up to full capacity, says Botha,“the system will create the opportunityfor patients to live their life to their fullpotential instead of waiting hours formedication and free up much-needed ca-pacity in our overcrowded facilities”.
To this end, the provincial health de-partment is adopting a hands-on ap-proach and monitoring the process close-ly.
Management receives daily progressupdates on progress enabling them to geta clear sense of progress and formulatespecific stra-tegies to address specificproblems.
This includes a daily assessment ofwaiting times.
Botha says with the inception of thechronic medication dispensing six yearsago there were similar and worse prob-lems which had to be managed in the firstyear.
He instructed the health department tocontract further locums to assist theprocess until all the challenges have beenaddressed because “until this issue is re-solved, it cannot be business as usual.”
All health facilities have been affectedto a degree, and in some instances clini-cians have had to re-prescribe medicines.
Some clinics experienced insufficientstock, while at others with no pharmacyon-site patients were transferred to alter-nate sites, adding to the workload.
These and other factors have contrib-uted to long patient waiting times.
Uti Pharma has put in place additionalquality control measures and brought ina team of engineers from Belgium towork on the automated dispensing ma-chine to prevent picking errors madeduring the automated dispensing proc-ess.
They have worked extended hours – in-clu-ding weekends and public holidays –to address the backlog.

Save our seasMOST of our country is surrounded by theocean, making the coastline a precious re-source.
The shores provide us with pleasure, foodand income. Originally traversed by the in-digenous peoples – the Khoi and San – it hasbecome a vital revenue source.
Historically, our harbours offered a safe ha-ven and replenishing station for seafaring na-tions, including the Portuguese, English andDutch who plied the Spice Route.
Durban has one of the country’s busiestharbours.
Given the sea’s dwindling resources inmeeting international demand, the Japanesefishing trawler Eihatsu Maru, stranded atClifton’s First Beach, brings the ability toprotect our maritime border into question.
There has reportedly been no communi-ques between the SA harbour authorities andthe captain of the Japanese trawler. When themist cleared, the trawler was already strand-ed.
The NSRI is investigating how the trawlermissed the harbour to get trapped on a sand-bank about 35m offshore.
Two years ago, the ocean in the US’s GulfCoast was threatened when an explosion onthe Deepwater Horizon drilling rig killed 11men and gushed millions of tons of oil intothe Gulf of Mexico.
Attempts – and frequent failures – by BP tocontain the spill led to the unfolding of an en-vironmental disaster and a political spat. Thespill put the sea out of bounds for humans andanimals.
With 90 tons of fuel and ammonia and 50tons of tuna on board the Eihatsu Maru, ma-rine and coastal services have much to con-tend with.

Nothing fun about slave routeDO the organisers Itheko and People’s Posthave no shame to sponsor the Jive Slave RouteChallenge?
Are the memories of our forebears now be-ing remembered in a fun run and walk? Howdo you tell your children about slavery?
That it was a fun thing? Do you have theguts to do the same for June 16? I do not thinkso.
ANONYMOUSFarouk Meyer of Itheko responds:How incredibly sad that the author of the
SMS has tried to turn a hugely positive celebra-tion of everything the slaves endured and diedfor sowe couldbe free, intobitter recriminationsabout the past. How sad that the writer cannotrelate to the wonderful experience of walkingfreely and gazing at the wonder of the moun-tain, the beauty of the trees and the joy of bird-song of our Fairest Cape that was so cruelly de-
nied to our forebears. Itheko has been one of thedriving forces behind this event which cele-brates the freedom we now enjoy and which isa tribute to the sacrifices of all who have gonebefore us. We would, therefore, like to invite thewriter to join us on this trip which pauses ateach of the critical monuments to the history ofthe slaves and pray with us at each stage as weremember the massive contribution of the slavesto our heritage. And, as we do so together, maywe take time to reflect on the words of NelsonMandela, who said: “Never, never and neveragain shall it be that this beautiful land willexperience the oppression of one by another”.
People’s Post editor Feroza Miller-Isaacsresponds:
I fully echo Farouk Meyer’s views and reit-erate that our publication is proud to align it-self with this positive event. I hope the writerwill accept Meyer’s invitation.
Trains of thought. Where does Donald Grant live?
Some of those students have to get upa lot earlier than him to get to school. What time does he venture into his of-fice?
. All good and well for someone notusing public transport. Has he noticedthat it is still pitch dark at 6.45? Youwant our children to get up an hourearlier to do what – be attacked in thedark?
On the days they are early andtransported on time, what would thesuggestion be for them to hang aroundon stations or to be waiting in the darkoutside locked schools?
Are you going to provide security atstations and at schools? Then, per-haps, it will work well.
. I don’t think Metrorail shouldfight against the guy who lost his eyebecause of a stone thrown through anopen or broken window.
The train I catch is being thrown atall the time. Where should we hide ifthe trains are over full?
And not to mention poor service, and now the poor scholars have towake up an hour earlier. It is dark andcold and not all parents have cars. These children have to walk to the sta-tion. It is dark and dangerous outthere.
General. The DA sees to the needs of whites
and blacks only. Don’t expect col-oured votes. Let the ANC take theCape, it makes no difference.
. Do the wives and family membersof Eskom staff have the privilege ofdriving Eskom vehicles for privateuse? Please clarify. Taxpayer
. Electricity reply to your com-ment. Try living in Musgrave Park.We don’t even get 50 free units!
. I’m not a racist person, but amother of three children who justwant thebest for themthroughschool. It is hard due to the fact I can’t finda job.
I would love to get more education, but don’t have themoney for it. If Iwasa black woman I would have gottenmyeducation for free. Not fair, I’ve gotso much to give.

I THINK it is extremely generous of Presi-dent Zuma to have a lot of criminals’ timeshortened and many of them released.
I just wonder what the mothers of rapedor murdered children feel and the sons ofmothers who have been beaten to death? How kind of Zuma to play God!
Or are there different reasons for his gen-erosity, like looking for votes to be re-elect-ed? God forbid.
I would have thought that a man with acriminal record, “allegedly”, would be morecircumspect of the law instead of playingjudge and jury. Every day is a new shock
treatment awaiting South Africans. While I sympathise with people in prison,
I am sure it is no walk in the park, but thenneither is rape, murder, drug trafficking, kidnapping and stealing people’s property.
They should build bigger prisons to pro-tect people on the outside. If the government
could stop its employees from stealing, there would be enough money for properprisons and prison care with proper prisonguards.
It all boils down to the dishonesty of pub-lic servants.RALPH KRALL
Are prisoners being released to desperately garner votes?

My mother my hero: readers respondMy mother my hero: readers respond
Mom was my best friendI READ your article about your mom andwas really touched. I lost my own mom a fewyears ago.
Unfortunately I was not living in South Af-rica at the time, but she was my best friendas well. Your mom sounds like an amazinglady with a real zest for life.
I have always been interested in alterna-tive medicines and have read extensively onthe subject. I just wondered if you have
looked at the Rene Caisse Herbal Tea.I tried finding it here in SA, but found
there were added ingredients to the originalrecipe.
If it is something you would like to lookinto, there is a non-profit organisation in theUK that would supply the original herbswhich make up the tea.
Hope this helps.RAYMOND H DAVIDS
Biking for hopeI read your column and it really moved me.I amabreast cancer survivor (2000 andagain2010) and I know the fear and pain involvedin the cancer spreading.
Together with 18 other women (all breastcancer survivors) I am doing a motorbiketrip called the Journey of Hope in October. We ride for a week, stopping at disadvan-taged communities and teaching them aboutearly detection and how to do self-examina-tion.
We also raise funds for people who can’tafford treatment and prostheses. I did it last
year (I had to learn to ride a 1 000cc motor-bike for it) and have decided to do it againthis year.
Last year I dedicated my ride to one of mybest friends for her bravery. She did not sur-vivebreast cancer. She soundsa lot likeyourmom.
I would like to dedicate this year’s ride toyour mom’s spirit and bravery in the faceof breast cancer. It will be a great privilegeand honour.
You may visit the website Journeyofhopeto see what it is all about.
All the best and kind regards.KATHY MALHERBERondebosch
Your mom is remarkableThank you so much for sharing about yourmom (My mother, my hero”, ConnectEd,People’s Post Tuesday 8 May).
Just yesterday I received a prayer requestfrom someone whose mom was diagnosedwith breast cancer.
I myself am a mother and grandma. I can’timagine the pain your mom must be endur-
ing and I agree your mom is a remarkablewoman of faith. I will pray for your mom.Love your column and shake off those whomisinterpreted your comparisons with East-er (“The joy of being connected”, ConnectEd,People’s Post, Tuesday 10 April). I think itwas good.JENNY
Celebrate lifeI AM the mother of a son who, on 3 May 1983,died of cancer of the brain at 18 years old.He developed cancer of the glands (Lympath-ic lymphoma) when he was 11.
He had invasive treatment for a while andwas in remission until he was 18.
In December 1982 he collapsed and was di-agnosed with brain cancer – unrelated to theprevious bout.
He had five brain operations in fivemonths, but eventually died the followingMay. He was an inspiration to all with hiscourage, attitude and behaviour – alwaysfull of fun.
We celebrated his life on Facebook a fewdays ago. You and your family will be in myprayers for your walk in your mother’s tri-als and needs. We have much to thank Godfor in giving us these examples in our lives.God bless you.MAGGIE JAMES
Focus on cancerI REALLY enjoyed reading the column in Peo-ple’s Post (“My mother, my hero”, Tuesday 8May). I can fully understand what you are go-ing through as I also lost my sister to cancerseven years ago.
The article highlights the challenges fami-lies face when someone is suffering from can-cer.
This was one of the main reasons I decidedto join a ministry group, called St Francis FireFlies.
Our aim is to train people to counsel survi-vors of cancer as well as family members. Wealso actively raise funds for theCancerAssoci-ation.
I just want to thank you for highlighting thisdisease as this country seems to be more fo-cused on HIV/Aids.NIGEL MAART
I AM one of those people who believe in thingshappening for a reason.
I have just finished reading your article inPeople’s Post and have to compliment you onthe deep love and understanding you areshowing your mother.
I would like to invite you to our Cuppa forCansa fundraiser at Absa Pinelands.
The branch and staff sponsor the coffee, teaand cake for R20. All funds raised will be do-nated to the Hospice Palliative Care Associa-tion (HPCA).
The HPCA advocacy officer, Eric Watling-ton, was featured in an article in People’s Post(“Can you lace up for cancer?”, Tuesday 31January) around the same time Iwasplanningmy second Cuppa for Cansa event.
On contacting him, he was excited to partici-pate in the event and we raised double theamount of money we raised the first time.
The most awesome part of the day is inter-acting with people who have or who knowsomeone who has the disease.
Cancer af-fects everyone of us –whether welike it or not.
People’sPost played apart in estab-lishing therelationshipbetween Absa Pinelands and the HPCA and Iwould be very honoured if you would join mein having a cup of coffee and a slice of cakein honour of your mother and everyone bat-tling this terrible disease.ANA DE SOUSAAbsa Pinelands Branch ManagerThank you for inviting me to the Cuppa forCancer last week, which regrettably, I wasunable to attend. I wish you all the best incontinuing your good work and commend youand Absa for creating awareness and assistingin raising funds for the care of those livingwith cancer. - Editor

career and especially the rugbycommunity of Manenberg.
“Sometimes people think thatManenberg onlyhasbadpeople, butthere is also a lot of good comingfrom Manenberg.
“I use my coaching as a tool to getrid of crime, especially with theyouth. I’m trying to help them byusing my coaching skills,” saysBlake.
He has been tasked withwhipping the forwards of theCraven Week team into shape, butsays that he is equally comfortableworking with the backs.
The tournament kicks off onMonday 9 July at the NelsonMandela Bay Stadium in PortElizabeth.
During his long-runningcoaching career Blake has workedwith some of the brightest youngtalents to come out of the WesternProvince set-up.

‘Speech’ lets punches do the talkingTAURIQ HASSEN
VRYGROND boxer Siphiwe ‘Speech’Zotho lets his gloves do talking.
Before even getting into the ring,Speech has had to overcome a number ofof obstacles. Even so, he may be close toachievinghis goal of obtainingprofession-al status and a licence.
Speech (30) first entered the ring at theVrygrond Boxing Academy three yearsago as an amateur boxer.
With two years of vigorous training un-der the belt, Speech sights are fixed on be-coming a professional – even though histraining conditions were less than ideal.
He has had to train in a shack which hasgaping holes in the roof. His punch bag isset up on the front porch, and he trainswithout boxing boots and the proper gear.
“I just have this winning attitude andI won’t give up,” says Speech. “I want tobe among the best boxers and I know whatit will take to become the best.”
In March, Speech received his profes-sional boxing status from Boxing SouthAfrica and recorded a technical knockout
in his last fight.Community worker and coach of the tal-
ented boxer, Isaac Goliat, says: “He is veryrespectful and filled with passion andknows exactly what he wants.” Goliat be-lieves these are the traits a winning boxershould have.
Goliat established the Vrygrond BoxingAcademy in 2003. It provides training tocommunity members between the ages offive to 40, at no cost.
The academy trains about 50 boxers, alllooking to achieve professional statussome day.
Goliat recently worked with the VulaFoundationatPollsmoorPrison, whereheprovided boxing and fitness training andengaged in dialogue around topical issueswhich relate to fatherhood as well ascrime.
With his professional status bagged,Speech now faces a new challenge. Heneeds a boxing promoter to help himclimb the ranks.
Goliat said: “Without a boxing promo-ter, Speech will not be able to get regularfights and that means he will not be ableto move up the ranks.”

LAVENDER HILL might be riddledwith crime, but this does not stopa local bicycle mechanic from tak-ing children off the street in orderto cycle.
Fagodien Campher offers acheaper repair option when itcomes to cycling, working out of acontainer at the Lavender Hill HighSchool.
“The shops in the suburbs charg-es so much to have bicycles re-pairedandpeople fromthis commu-nity cannot afford it, so I offer thischeaper service to get people cy-cling again,” says Campher.
This bicycle mechanic startedworking as a general worker andsupervisor for BMD Knitting Millsand two years after being re-trenched he hopped on his bicycleand started cycling
He says: “Ever since I started cy-cling I cannot stop and I just wanteverybody to have that same feelingas me.”
His business venture started in2010, after completing a course with
the Bicycle Empowerment Net-work South Africa (BEN). At thesame time, Campher started theLavender Hill Senior SecondaryImfundo Cycle Club in the area.
BEN was established in CapeTown in 2002 and their main mis-sion is to address poverty and mo-bility through the promotion of thebicycle in all its forms. BEN im-ports used bicycles from overseasand distributes them to low incomeareas, trains recipients of the bikesin safety and maintenance, estab-lishes Bicycle Empowerment Cen-tre’s (BEC’s) and encourages cli-ents to implement bicycle planningand infrastructure.
Campher was given some used bi-cycles anda containerbyBENinor-der to start his business, after hewas taught how to repair and main-tain bicycles.
Sports such as soccer, rugby andcricket, with the odd hike up amountain are some of Campher’sfavourites, but cycling has growninto one of his “passions”.
“I always see the children playingout on the street and I thought that
through cycling I could make a dif-ference and I can see the childrentaking a huge interest in what I do,”Campher added.
Andrew Wheeldon, managing di-rector for BEN, explained that Cam-pher was always keen on becominginvolved in one of BENs’ independ-ent projects, whilst serving as astaff member.
“He is a tremendous guy who islooking after the mobility of the ar-ea and he also showed a lot of inter-est in our independent projects, which is why BEN decided to assisthim,” says Wheeldon.
Wheeldon concluded by sendingout a message to the community:“We promote cycling in all forms toimprove health and bring commu-nities together and our main objec-tive is to get more people cycling.”
Campher is now looking for spon-sorships for a trip to Knysna withthe cycle club to partake in an eventlater this year.
Any items such as old cycle cloth-ing, shoes or bicycles are needed.Anybody interested can contactCampher on 084 241 4544.

FISHHOEKresidentEdwardMurdochbe-lieves he has walked more than a millionkilometres in his life.
On Sunday 27 May he will add another 21,1to his tally when he takes part in the JiveSlave Route Challengehalf marathon.
Murdoch will competein the race for the firsttime this year, and at 79he will be the oldest com-petitor in any of theevents which form part ofthe Challenge.
The determined Scot, who immigrated to SouthAfrica with his wife in1997, is a regular roadrace competitor and hascollected close to 100 med-als since he started par-ticipating in the sportagain in his early40s.Murdoch says the se-cret to his success in road races, and the rea-son why he is still able to compete at such anadvanced age, are his natural talent, healthylifestyle and competitive nature.
“I haven’t driven a car since I was 21, sotherefore I have probably walked over a mil-lion miles in my life. I have very strong legs.“I am a determined bloke. I train well, I eatsensibly and when I come into a race and getto the start, I say I’m here, it’s mental, I’mhere, that’s where I’ll be.”
Before moving to Fish Hoek, Murdochlived in Plumstead and Wynberg and he says
he has always loved South Africa. He currently lives a busy and active life,
filling his days with gardening, cooking, bowls, snooker and ballroom dancing, hisother favourite sport.
In his youth, Murdoch won several majorballroom dancing competitions in Britainand Europe. He no longer competes, but says
that regular practice helpshim to stay fit and strong.“My other advantage isthat I’ve been a ballroomdancer since I was 10 yearsold, and I was second in theworld when I was 30. Overhere I use it for the fact thatI don’t need to go to gym be-cause when I’m dancingI’m using every muscle.”
Since returning to athlet-ics when he was middle-aged, Murdoch stuck main-ly to middle and long dis-tance running, but in hisyouth his event of choicewas the 100m sprint. Less
than two years ago he went back to his child-hood sport when he competed in the 100 me-tre event at the WP master athletics champi-onships and finished third in 16,4 seconds.
Murdoch admits that he has always strug-gled to say no to a challenge, so it makessense that he could not resist entering oneof the unique road race challenges in SouthAfrica. “If somebody challenges me to dosomething, I’ll have a go. But I’m not daft,I won’t go into danger,” says Murdoch.
For more information or to enter the racevisit www.itheko.org. People’s Post is theevent’s media sponsor.
Still running at 79
