CRIME: MULTIMILLION RAND INVESTMENT PAYS OFF
Zooming in on hotspotNADINE MOODIE
Big Brother is going to become a bigbother for criminals operating thestretch between Observatory and New-
lands.Ten CCTV cameras were installed along
Main Road in June last year when the Cityof Cape Town, UCT and SAB entered a part-nership to ward off crime persisting in thishotspot. The three stakeholders each donated R1m
to make these cameras possible.Mowbray Community Policing Forum
and Ratepayers’ Association chairpersonJonathan Hobday says the CCTV camerasare proving effective and have assisted with
crime and traffic violations.Safety and Security Mayoral Committee
memberJPSmith says the camerasareoper-ational and specifically placed along thisstretch because Law Enforcement noted anincrease in criminal activity.Mowbray Police spokesperson Warrant
Officer Derek van derMerwe agrees that thecameras are very effective and have assistedthem with identifying culprits and falsecomplaints.“The cameras aremonitored from the traf-
fic management systems office near N1 CityMall and there are talks of installing morebecause they’ve been so effective in combat-ing crime,” he says.SAB’s Cape region corporate affairs man-
ager Sanele Gaqa says they got involvedwith the initiative at Premier Helen Zille’srequest.“The Newlands Brewery is the oldest
brewery in South Africa and we’re based inthe precinct where the cameras are placed. It’s only right for us to assist,” he says.UCT’s property and services executive di-
rector John Critien says the institutionjoined the partnership with the communityto ensure that the surrounding areas arekept safe and clean.“We’re doing this by collaborating with
the Groote Schuur Community Improve-ment District (GSCID) who monitor the pre-cinct andprovide an integrated and effectivesecurity presence,” he says.
Ward councillor Matthew Kempthornesays the initiative dates back to when HelenZille was Cape Town’s mayor.“Policing is a national concern and these
cameras are an additional tool for the policeand City and will serve as more eyes in thearea, adding to long-term safety,” he says.“The Rondebosch Community Improve-
ment District started their own initiativewhen they collected money from their mem-bers to put up cameras in their operatingprecinct.“These cameras have assisted them with
bringing criminals to book and we believethese new cameras will combat crime inMain Road too.”

A Mowbray woman was at the wrongplace at the wrong time when she washijacked by two men.
Mowbray police spokesperson WarrantOfficer Derek van der Merwe says the twomen initially followed home a Mowbraymanwho lives in the same road as thewom-an.“The man became aware of the men fol-
lowing him and drove home at high speedand quickly managed to get into his housebefore the men could attack him,” he says.“The woman did not know the men were
following her Landseer Road neighbourand also arrived home when the two menapproached her and asked her to hand overher keys and her Audi A3.”The woman, whowants to remain anony-
mous, says she arrived home at 19:30 andopened her driveway gate.“I looked up and saw the two men walk
towards me and point a gun against the carwindow,” she says.“They politely askedme get out and leave
the keys in the cars.“I didn’t want to hit the panic button,
fearing theymight shootme and instead gotbehind the gardenwallwhere Ihit thepanicbutton, but by then the men had left withthe car.”The woman’s husband says the police
spotted the car on Duinefontein Road, nearBishop Lavis, but could not chase it, as itsped off. The husband says the patrol vehi-cle wasn’t fast enough. Police did not wantto comment on this as “it is still under in-vestigation”.Hobday says the suburb is being targeted
on the hijacking front.
“We had a low crime rate in the past, butit seems as if criminals keep targeting ourresidents and we need them to take extraprecautions for their safety,” he says.“Residents need to be vigilant and ensure
that no one are following them, and reportany suspicious activity to the police.”
In May, a Rondebosch resident was heldat gunpoint after he was followed home bythreemenwhohave been labelled as the fol-low home gang. The men told forced him tothe ground and made off with this wallet, keys, car and cellphone.Rondebosch Community Improvement
District’s (RCID) manager Shirley Aldumsays prior to this there were six hijackingincidents in Rondebosch last year.

CAMPAIGN FOR FATHERS: ‘BRING A LITTLE LOVE’
Dad’s the wordTAURIQ HASSEN
For one in three children growing upwithout their fathers, one question re-mains unanswered: “Why did my dad
leave?”According to recent statistics, nearly half
of the country’s children are growing upwith an absent but living dad. There are plenty of reasons for the fathers
not being a factor, such as the impact ofHIV/Aids, cultural traditions, migrationfrom rural to urban areas, tough economicrealities and other complicated social andfinancial explanations.Hoping to restore the value of a father in
the household is the MenCare campaign.Globally, an overwhelming amount of ev-
idence confirms that engaged, responsivefatherhood andmen’s participation in theirchildren’s lives have positive effects forwomen, little ones and themen themselves.MenCare is a global fatherhood campaign
looking to promote men’s involvement asequitable, non-violent fathers and caregiv-ers in order to achieve family well-beingand gender quality. It is coordinated by Promundo and the
Sonke Gender Justice Network.JaneKato-Wallace is a programmeofficer
with Promundo and coordinates the globalMenCare campaign to engage men in car-egiving.“We need to provide spaces for men to re-
flect on the harmful norms that cause themto stifle the future potential of their chil-dren and instead promote efforts that sup-port equality for children, for families, forall,” she says. The campaign was recently in Cape
Town, where the first meeting of the Men-Care Global Fatherhood campaign took
place. One father making the most of histimewith his two sons is AdamBailey, whoalso learntmore about becoming a better fa-ther through MenCare. He lost his wife in a car accident, but says
he was left with two precious little gifts.Only aged two and seven at the time, he
struggled to adapt to life as a single parent, but slowly started receiving support fromhis family, friends and the community.“Both my boys were still young at the
time of my wife’s death and I had to dealwith that as well as looking after them. Itwas hard and there were times when I feltlike giving up,” he says. For three years, both his boys had to live
at their grandparents’ home, as Baileyreached breaking point. “Emotionally, Iwas in tatters and Imissedmywife terribly.I did everything I could, but I knew that duetome hurting, I would never be able to real-ly take care of them,” Bailey says. Thanks to MenCare, he slowly started
patching things up with the boys and todayis closer to them than any other time intheir lives.V To download tools, publications and learn moreabout the campaign, visit www.men-care.org.

KO Challengefinalists namedLIAM MOSES
The gruelling play-off rounds of the 10thannual Engen Knockout Challengecame to an end on Sunday, with 13
teams sealing qualification for the finals.Cape Town’s premier under-17 tourna-
ment started at the beginning of June, withover 100 teams fighting to join hosts Santos, defending champions Ajax Cape Town andNational First Division (NFD) side ChippaUnited in the tournament finals.
However, with thousands of rands worthof prizes and bragging rights at stake onlythe best teams have qualified for the finalsin August.
Teams from across Cape Town have sur-vived the cut and both the northern andsouthern suburbs will be strongly repre-sented.
Parow based NFD team Vasco da Gama,Kraaifontein City, Kuils River FC, IslandsRovers, Bishop Lavis FC and Atlantic Na-cional make up the northern contingent, while Claremont’s ASD Academy, CapeUnited, Grassy Park’s Crusaders, GreenPoint Selesians, Hanover Park FC, Mitch-ell’s Plain’s Kenpark United and Pinelandsclub Old Mutual Academy represent thesouth.
Should one of the qualifiers not be ableto participate, Two Oceans Academy, Unit-ed FC or Eastern Rovers will take theirplace.
One of the most surprising omissionsfrom the list of finalist is Mitchell’s Plain’sWoodlands United, who finished in seventhplace at the finals last year.
Woodlands finished in third place ingroup four after a solitary victory, withBishop Lavis in first on nine points and OldMutual in second on six points.
Lavis were one of only five teams to finishthe second phase with a perfect record, along with Crusaders, Hanover Park, ASDAcademy, Atlantic Nacional.
Hanover Park topped the scoring chartsin the play-off rounds with eleven goals intheir three games, while Crusaders were aclose second with 10.
ASD hit the back of the net seven times, but were the only team not to concede a sin-gle goal.
While most will be backing Ajax and San-tos to take the title again, Hanover Park,Crusaders and ASD could push last year’sfinalists for the crown.
The 10th annual Engen Knockout Chal-lenge will take place from Friday 16 to Sun-day 18 August.
