council will assist the administration of th e . school system as an advisory firoup and will alert and educate the community in drug awareness and drug abuse.

Barry Silver, school psychologist, working in conjunction with the guidance departments of the; Junior and Senior high schools; is establishing a student planning committee on drug awareness. Membership consists of a majority of students and representation of parents, teachers, guidance personnel and administrators.- This committee in addition to educating and alerting the schools will ac t as a task force of, informed sensitive individuals who will participate in an onrgoing drug education program and work directly with stii-. dents who have a; drug problem.

Currently t h e entire Health Education curriculum is undergoing investigation in grades K- 12 to determine if the current efforts are meeting the needs of today’s youth.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Neptune program has been the “drop-in” sessions conducted every Tuesday in t l i e Junior and Senior high schools. Students who feiel the necessity of expressing their feelings or of soliciting assistance are f r e e to drop in and discuss the topic with members of the guidance s ta ir a t both schools.

Mr, Roy Dunshee, Administrative Director of Special Projects for t h e school system reports that the cooperation received within the community has been excellent and that the approach being undertaken by the'school system has received favorable response; He is presently in contact with state officials in Trenton in hopes of soliciting federal* assistance to assist in teacher training and in developing, a long range approach to the problem.

; NEPTUNE TWP. — In recent months Dr. V.J.W. Christie, superintendent of schools in Neptune Township, and the administrative staff of the school system have been busily engaged in planning & implementing a comprehensive community program in drug awareness and d r u g education..

After attending a week long drug abuse workship in 1968, Sidney L. Wells, vice principal of

: Neptune Junior High School and coordinator of drug awareness in the school system included the following statment in his report to the Board of Education.

' “I feel that we in Neptune must attempt a total community approach as a means to end any drug abuse. Neptune is a large community, y e t small : enough , so that we should be able to approach the problem from every angle in a coordinated efforts Educators a n d community groups working together. f o r an effective program, consisting of their independent efforts; efforts t h at arc not duplications of one another should be more than adequate to meet this challenge.” Since this report, t h e school

system, along with the public In general, has become Increasingly more aware of the added role the school and community must assume in the education of young people in narcotics prevention.

As a result of this awareness, the Board o£ Education recently, adopted a proposal submitted by the Superintendent of Schools implementing recommendations & suggestions offered by the Drug Education Committee.

Included in the Board adopted policy was the acceptance of the offer of the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders to sponsor a training program in the areas of drug awareness and drug I abuse under the direction of Dr. M urray Kagel of the Metropoli-! tan Regional Council. This pro- j gram will train three separate, groups, students, teachers a n d parents,, in drug awareness and sensitivity to form a cadre of trained personnel.

Under the policy a Community Council on Drug Awareness and Drug Abuse h a s been formed consisting of representatives ■from all PTA andl PTO groups, the Parents Coalition Group and all. other Interested civic or school committees. The council, working in cooperation with the Police Department and Township authorities, will act as the public informant in relaying to t h e community all data and information available in treating t h e problem. Where possible, t h e council will assist the administration available in treating the problem. Where possible, t h e
