Proportion Method

Finding the Part, Whole, or Percent

STEP1. Determine whether you are being asked to find the part, whole or percent.

STEP 2. Substitute the numbers given in the problem into the proportion formula. Use a variable (X) for the unknown that you are being asked to find.

STEP 3. Then cross-multiply the numbers that are given and divide that answer by the remaining number.

 Cross Multiply the two numbers given:

80 x 20 = 1600 Now divide that answer by the number left over:

1600 ÷ 100 = 16

Cross Multiply the two numbers given:

100 x 16 = 1600 Now divide the answer by the number left over:

1600 ÷ 20 = 80

ANSWER = 80

Cross Multiply the two numbers given:

16 x 100 = 1600 Now divide the answer by the number left over:

1600 ÷ 80 = 20

ANSWER = 20%

1. A student earned a grade of 70% on a math test that had 10 problems. How many problems on this test did the student answer correctly? 2. There were 36 students signed up to go on a fieldtrip. On the day of the trip, only 29 students were present. What percent of the students showed up for the field trip? 3. Lorena put $450 into a savings account for one year. The rate of interest on the account was 6.5%. How much was the interest did he earn for the year? 4. A student answered 46 problems on a test correctly and received a grade 88%. How many problems were on the test, if all the problems were worth the same number of points? 5. David bought a car for 65% of the original price of $8500. What did he pay for the car? 6. Pamela bought a new jacket on sale for 30% off the original price. She paid $32.00 for the sweater. What was the original price?

7. Shawna earns $550 per week. She gets 15% deducted for taxes. How much money does she pay in taxes each week? 8. Brian paid $425 for a new bike plus 6% sales tax. What was the total cost of the bike including tax? (2 steps) 9. At a bake sale students sold 145 chocolate chip cookies, 95 oatmeal cookies, and 87 sugar cookies. What is the percent of the cookies sold was oatmeal? (2 steps) 10. There are 32 students in a class. Nine of those students are women. What percent are men? (2 steps) 11.
