Besides academics, do you feel that the department has given you platform to showcase your personality?•The department has extended all sorts of help for my holistic development. It is generally seen that students who are good at academ-ics are the favourites of the teachers. But I felt that it was not so at our department. I was an average student at my college days but I got lot of support from the faculties whenever I went to them for their support. There were times when we had to miss our classes to participate in extracurricular activities. The teachers used to generously give us attendance so that we could participate in such activi-ties and bring accolades for the college. I got an opportunity to volunteer at an international conference hosted by our department. This conference gave me opportunity to interact with people all across the globe. The exposure helped me in dreaming big and to also see beyond where actually I stood then.

Anything that you can suggest, so as to make the learning process better.Students are given the technical expertise when they came to the college but to have a holistic perspective they should be given expo-sure to other inevitable phases of life. Many students are from poor background but there are few who might not be aware of bitter truth of life. It’s important for every individual to be social aware. To do social work we need not require a degree rather it can be done through any profession we are in.To be a more responsible and sensitive engineers following can be done by the college:1. Exposure to reality: Student of the college should be taken to nearby slum areas for exposure visits where they can see the prob-lems and try to develop their understanding on these issues. Volunteering in various NGOs or organisations working for the down-trodden would also help the students to come closer to the reality which exists around us. Organising events for such marginalised people who are not able to come out of the viscous cycle of poverty just due to lack of information regarding various governmentschemes available for them.2. Incorporation of Social Cell: A social cell should be developed in the college where the students can start some social initiatives by organising various campaigns to make the other students of the college aware about various prevalent issues. The passion and en-ergy of students can act as a symbol of change. Being technocrats we can try to take R&D initiative to develop technological solution to solve the problems for the poor people related to agriculture, employment, education etc.3. Ethics & Moral Subjects: I strongly feel that in our college curriculum there should be a subject on ethics, morality and responsi-bility towards the society. Motivational classes should be there for the students and guest lectures by renowned people from the social sector. Social work is something that comes from heart and that should drive an individual to work for the society to which we all belong.4. Adopting various measures: CV Raman being a responsible college can take measures like using solar panel, waste food manage-ment, waste paper management, efficient use of electricity etc. to become more responsible and sensitive towards society.

What is your current affiliation and awards you achieved after you pass out from college? My name is Sumit Kumar and presently I am working as a Prime Minister’s Rural Develop-ment fellow under Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The fellowship is among the most prestigious fellowship started by Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. Under the fellowship I am expected to work in remote areas of naxal affected district of the country and to be the voice of the marginalised section of the society. I need to under-stand their issues and problems and hence help the district administration in addressing these issues. I had been invited as a speaker in the National HO meet held in Jharkhand. It was a great honour to give my insight as a speaker on the rights and issues of tribal in India. My current assignment includes working with the tribal of the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. I try to develop projects to provide livelihood for the people so as to raise their income and hence their standard of living. Being a technical graduate I always try to make best use of technology

so that the grievances of the poor people reaches the right people and they get a voice which remains unheard. My inclination towards social sector made me to join Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai to purse Master in Social Work soon after my B Tech from C V Raman College of engineering. At TISS I came closer to the ground reality via the social issues prevalent in the society. There were instances where I saw the exploitation in our country under the name of development. The experiences while working with activists like Medha Patker and Shamim Modi gave me immense knowledge and understanding about the atrocities on the poor and innocent tribal people. After passing out from TISS I joined JSW Foundation at Mumbai, the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of JSW Steel. Working with the foundation I looked after the environment sustainability related projects. I had represented the organisation at the CSR Non Profit Summit held in Pune. Being one of the panel members in the Summit, which was attended by big corporates across the country, was an achievement for me. I was thirsty to work more for the society where I can understand the issues and problems of the people. The managerial work being offered to me in the corporate world was not the one I wanted to work for. I also felt was not prepared and definitely not meant for – my ambition, my thoughts, my study, my upbringing and my inner self never allowed to sit in an AC room and work 9 to 6.

What was your experience in the department of electronics and telecommunications engineering, during your B.E.?This college especially my department has moulded me to what I am today. The faculties of the department were always supportive and helped me find solutions to the problems which I faced at different point of time. A college is a platform for not only for getting knowledge and starting career with placement but also for building your attitude via various extra-curricular activities. A place where an individual reconnoitres the world and attempts to learn new things to prepare him-self to face the world. Nonetheless it is also a place where one makes friends for lifetime. I can proudly say that C V Ra-man and my department has given me everything which I needed to face the world. To instantiate a few me and my friends got an opportunity to participate in robotics competition held all across India like IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur, ISM Dhanbad, Sikkim Manipal, KIIT, ITER and several other colleges in Orissa. I have also given several paper presen-tations at tech fests at ISM Dhanbad, NIST, OEC, KIIT and many other colleges in Orissa. The kind of exposure and ideas through these events helped me in assessing my quality and my skills. The most important support to participate in tech fests was offered by the college whom we were representing in these events. The faculties have given constant guid-ance, monitoring and encouragement to organise such events in our own college and motivate others for maximum par-ticipation. In that respect I owe my sincere gratitude to the faculties of our department. My deep regards to Kanungo Sir who had always been very supportive both emotionally and financially. While doing my B Tech I realised that technol-ogy should reach the lower strata of the society it in then I decided make use of my learning in B.Tech and contribute to-wards the same. Thus I applied for TISS examinations during my final year of B Tech. I can never forget the help and support extended by Gyan Sir which helped me in great deal during my interview at TISS, Mumbai.

Do you feel that the things that you learned in the department helped you in any way to set up your career?Indeed the learning of my engineering college days has helped me in shaping my career. Personal interaction with facul-ties helped me in making short term goals. I realised that in order to have long term goal one needs to pursue short term goals. Exposures at different colleges during tech fest gave me immense confidence and strength to face the challenges of the outside world. After passing out from the college I was ready to face the challenges in the outside world with much enthusiasm and confidence. One should always remember that in order to build a huge building its base should always be strong. C V Raman is the foundation stone of my career over which I am now developing the building.
