    Dear Customers,

AkzoNobel is since more than a decade a recognized lea-ding company in the Chemicals sector in the area of Sus-tainability. As a global leader and expert in the Building & Construction segment we continuously fill our Innovation funnel and include the sustainability aspect of our solutions in the forefront. In this edition of our Newsletter you find some of our latest market updates and recent product launches.

It is my pleasure to introduce our first brochure about «Living in green buildings», an overview of our sustain-able solutions, illustrating what we have achieved so far and what drives our future.

Construction and maintenance of Buildings & Infrastructure is a key application segment for AkzoNobel where nearly half of the company’s revenues are made. Todays’ develop-ments are focused towards long term performance, in lifetime and money, leading towards the latest green build-ing standards (e.g. LEED) and aiming at consistent and favorable living quality conditions. We want to meet this ambition in connection with growing customer needs on ease of application to ensure an efficient use of materials and time throughout the application work, from an appli-cator as well as owner’s perspective.

If you have any feedback to us about what we are doing please let us know – your opinion is important to us.

The latest addition to our Building and Construction Per-formance Additives product portfolio, ELOTEX®CF9000 redispersible polymer powder has been specifically desig-ned to formulate high performance cement free and min-eral binder free dry-mix finishing and decorative coats. The use of ELOTEX®CF9000 brings to our customers not only a sustainability advantage of eliminating cement from their formulations but also ensures high water resistance and weathering (UV) stability of finishing coats.

Cement free decorative finishing coats formulated with ELOTEX®CF9000 are a real alternative to the ready-to-use dispersion based decorative finishing systems. Move from dispersion based ready-to-use systems will bring following benefits to our customers:

    - Less, lighter and lower cost packaging material (paper bags instead of plastic buckets)- Less waste and easier handling of packaging waste- Less transportation and storage costs- No freezing issues- No biocides in the final powder formulation (normally needed for in-bucket preservation)- Consistency of the finishing coat can be easily varied by the amount of added water – one powder formulation for different application methods (hand or machine).

Compared to cement based powder finishing coats, cement free formulations with ELOTEX®CF9000 offer:

    - pH

ELOTEX®FX6300 in combination with different blended cements for C2TE tile adhesive mortars

    Product performance update – ELOTEX® FX6300

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions (CO2), energy effi-ciency and more integration of renewable materials in the building and construction industry are nowadays a usual requirement. To meet the growing demand for sustainable products, it is worthwhile to look in depth into the environmental impact of the manufacturing of Portland cement.

One way for the dry mortar industry to reduce the environ-mental impact of Portland cement in their dry mortar formu-lations is the implementation of alternative cementitious binders, like blended cements. Blended cements are obtained by mixing Ordinary Port-land Cement (OPC) with by-products (fly ash, blast furnace slag, or silica fumes) of other industrial branches in various amounts. Such cements comply with European Standard EN 197-1, which categorises cement into five types based on their chemical composition: CEM I (Portland cement), CEM II (Portland composite cement), CEM III (Blastfurnace cement), CEM IV (Pozzolanic cement), and CEM V (com-posite cement) (Scheme 1).

Scheme 1 Cement classification according to EN 197-1. I- Portland cement, II- Portland composite cement (A- low and B- moderate content of admixtures), III- Blastfurnace cement, IV- Pozzolanic cement, V- composite cement.

Alternatives to Portland cement make a substantial contri-bution to environment protection including energy saving, conservation of natural resources, and pollution control. Moreover, from a technical point of view, properties of blended cements, in particular durability of material, can be better than those of OPC cement due to finer particles, and therefore, lower permeability.

However, variability in chemical composition of composite cements makes it more difficult to control mortar rheol-ogy, open time, and adhesion strengths. Therefore, dry mortar producers are faced with the challenge of replacing the mainly used OPC CEM I by blended cements while still maintaining excellent performance of their ceramic tile adhesive (CTA).

Compatibility with all different kinds of cementitious bind-ers was one of the key requirements during the develop-ment of our lately launched new redispersible polymer powder ELOTEX®FX6300 for high quality C2 class tile adhesives.

Figure 1Tensile adhesion strength after wet storage (EN 1348) of tile adhesive with different cement types (CEM I, CEM II/B-S, CEM II/A-LL, CEM III/A).

Our ELOTEX®FX6300 redispersible polymer powder was specifically developed to extend open time and improve wet adhesion properties of high quality cement based tile adhesives. Use of ELOTEX®FX6300 enables dry mix mor-tar producers to obtain same open time and wet adhesion benefits even when using cements of different qualities (such as CEM II or CEM III). Additionally, due to very low VOC emissions (meeting the EMICODE EC1PLUS require-ments) this redispersible polymer powder ensures safe working environment for applicators and excellent indoor air quality.

Tile adhesive formulations modified with ELOTEX®FX6300 provide excellent adhesion performance in the most critical wet conditions. As shown in Figure 1, formulations with ELOTEX®FX6300 and different types of cement (e.g.CEMII/B-S, CEMIIA/LL, CEMIII/A) meet the EN 1348 norm for C2 tile adhesive (tensile adhesion strength ≥ 1 N/mm2). In combination with composite cements, ELOTEX®FX6300offers outstanding open time, exceeding by far the minimum requirements of EN 1346 for C2 TE tile adhesive (open time ≥ 0.5 N/mm2, after 30 min) (Figure 2) without sacri-ficing slip resistance and early strength development.
