Using the Performance Analyzer GUI Data Collection and Device display

Data Collection and Device displayPrior to changing any of the views on the default display it is good practice to determine from which IBM idevices you want to gather performance data, the time period over which the data is displayed and themethod used to view more than one device via the same display. These options are all configured from theOptions Tab, on the menu bar at the top of the display.

Note: See Managing Devices within Performance Analyzer GUI for more information on adding devices for display within the Performance Analyzer GUI.

Performance Analyzer GUI OptionsThe options tab is split into four subsequent panels.

Startup panelThe Startup panel within Performance Analyzer options contains the following parameters.

Show Last DeviceIf checked, this option shows performance data for the last device that was visible when the view waspreviously closed. If not checked, performance data is displayed for the first enabled device in the ManageDevices dialog.

Start AutoSwitchAuto-Switch allows you to automatically switch between devices and/or pages.

Note: For more information regarding Auto-Switch see Auto-Switch Mode panel and Auto Switch panel.

If checked, the current view is auto-switched at the rate determined by the values entered in the Auto-Switch Mode panel of this display. If not checked, the current view remains static and subsequent viewsmust be manually invoked.

Data panelThe Data panel within Performance Analyzer options contains the following parameters.

Cache SizeSpecifies the time interval over which performance collection data is retained in memory for displaypurposes. The default value is 20 minutes and the maximum value that can be set is 60 minutes. Note thata high volume of data combined with other display options may create a ‘cluttered’ display which can thenbe difficult to view.

Note: If you change this figure, you must wait for the next set of performance data to be returned from the IBM i before the view is amended.

Max WorkersWorkers are the communication links that check the IBM i devices for performance data and report back tothe Performance Analyzer GUI.

Halcyon Performance Analyzer- 17 -

Page 18: Performance Analyzer GUI v10.2 User Guide

Using the Performance Analyzer GUI Data Collection and Device display

It is recommended that for every 2 IBM i devices for which you are collecting data, you assign 1 worker. Therefore, if you have 10 devices for which you are collecting performance data, you would need 5workers.

If the ratio between devices and workers is greater than two, it is likely that the speed with whichperformance data is collected is negatively impacted. The default setting for this field is 5 workers. If thereare more workers than systems, there is no impact on system performance.

Logging panelThe Logging panel within Performance Analyzer options contains the following parameters.

Log InformationalIf checked, all system informational messages are logged. These can be found in the same directory pathas the diagnostic messages.

Log DiagnosticIf checked, all system diagnostic messages are logged to the log file; HPA.hlf, which is located (by default)in directory path;

C:\Program Files\Halcyon\Performance Analyzer\ Logs

(or the alternative directory path to which the software was installed).

Auto-Switch Mode panelThe Auto-Switch Mode panel within Performance Analyzer options contains the following parameters.

Note: See also Auto Switch panel for more information on using auto-switch mode.

Switch EveryDefines the time interval between which devices and/or pages are automatically switched on the currentview if auto-switching is active. The default setting is 30 seconds.

PeriodSpecifies the unit of time for the interval between which devices and/or pages are automatically switchedon the current view if auto-switching is active. Either Seconds or Minutes can be selected. The defaultsetting is Seconds.

Switch DevicesIf checked, the Performance Analyzer GUI display automatically switches the view to the next listed deviceafter the time period defined in the ‘Switch Every’ and ‘Period’ fields.

Switch PagesIf checked, the Performance Analyzer GUI display automatically switches the view to the next page for thecurrent device after the time period defined in the ‘Switch Every’ and ‘Period’ fields.

Note: If both Switch Devices and Switch Pages are checked, the auto-switching of all pages contained within the current device view is undertaken before auto-switching to the next device.

Pressing ESC stops auto-switching.

Details PageThe details page provides System, ASP, Pool and Job information in list format rather than as a graphicaldisplay.

Sorting columnsUsing the Detail List view, it is possible to alter the display by changing the order in which the columnswithin each panel are sorted.

The default view shows each panel sorted by time in descending order (earliest first). However, as anexample, you may wish to see at which time the CPU was at it’s busiest. In this instance, click the title barof the ‘CPU%’ column twice (once changes the sort but it is now in ascending order). The point at which theCPU% was at its highest is now at the top of this column. To return to sorting the panel by time, click twiceon the title bar of the ‘Time’ column. Other columns can be sorted using the same method.

Note: After changing the sort order of the columns, you can either change them back to the default settings, exit the program without saving any changes or save the new layout as an alternative view. See Saving views for more information. If you do not perform either of these actions, the changed sort order will form part of the default view the next time the page is displayed.

Customizing the default views

OverviewThe Summary, Pools, ASP and Details pages represent standard default views to get you started. Onceyou are familiar with the layouts and graphical representations, you can begin to customize these views toyour own requirements and create your own pages tailored to the individual demands of your enterpriseand organization.

All of the display elements of the Performance Analyzer can be customized to suit your own requirements.

Note: You cannot edit pages or panels within the Performance Analyzer if your license code only provides a ‘read-only’ view of the performance data.

• The representative icon

• Chart and advanced Settings

• Field colors

• Field sequence

Field definitions and editing procedures are the same used as when Adding a Chart Panel.

Changing the sequence of displayWhen multiple types of chart are being displayed within the same chart panel, it is possible that importantperformance data may be obscured by other data, displayed in a different format.

Performance data is displayed in the order in which it is defined within the chart panel. Therefore if an linechart is defined prior to an area chart, the area chart obscures the line chart. This can be rectified by re-sequencing the order in which the performance fields are displayed.

To change the sequence of display:

1. From the Quick Access toolbar select Edit mode.

2. Click on the chart panel for which you wish to re-sequence the field display.

3. From the toolbar, click the Edit Panel icon . The Edit Chart Panel dialog is displayed.

4. In the Field Selection pane of this dialog, are listed the performance data fields that are currentlydisplayed.

5. Select the field that you wish to move in the display so that it is highlighted and click the correspondingdirection arrow to move the field one place in the chosen direction. (Direction buttons are only availablewhen more than one performance data field is listed and when the direction of movement is possible).

6. Click OK to confirm the move of the selected performance data field.
