How Let me tell you a bit about a running joke among our family. Anytime we travel with the Miller’s (Jim & Mindy) and someone needs something, Mindy has it. She always carries her “magic bag”. Whatever you need, she’s got it in there. It’s almost like the magician’s hat, but without the doves and rabbits. It’s more like a Walgreen’s in there, what with the pharmaceuticals, firsttems, snacks, health & beauty items, greeting cards and magazines. I, for one, have been saved more than once by the “magic bag”. It’s bottomless, I swear! The lesson to be learned here, of course, is to be prepared! The question is: prepared for what? With what? So let’s talk about what you carry in your car, or maybe you don’t. I used to be better with this in my ’99, not so much with the ‘speed and I can’t really explain why. more power continued . . . . . . . . . .

PERFORMANCE AUTO SPA DEMO recapped Summary of the Steps Discussed at the Performance Auto Spa Demo: BMC Members: We had a good turnout at Performance Auto Spa (PAS) Paint Care Demo on Saturday March 29th, 2014. A lot of information came out in a short time and I think some of attendees where a bit overwhelmed with the many steps discussed. With this document, I took the opportunity to summarize and list the steps discussed to clean up and take care of your clear coated paint. This process is not for older single stage painted cars without clear coat. If you are not sure what paint you have, rub some substance like Meguires Scratch-X on an inconspicuous part of your car and if any of the cars color comes off on the rag then you probably have single stage paint. Always follow the directions from the manufacturer for clay, polish, and wax/sealant. Wash your car using car wash soap, avoiding direct sunlight. Remove any obvious bugs and tar from the paint with Stoner (or other brand) bug remover that is safe for cars with clear coat. Next clay your car to remove other surface imperfections. Material can become imbedded in the paint that will not come off with just washing. You can test the paint by putting your hand in a plastic sandwich bag and rub it over the paint. Before claying the car you probably will feel a drag from the paint. Even new car finishes can normally be improved with the claying process. An alternative is to use a NanoSkin pad with an orbital buffer (not a rotary buffer) or by hand. Paint cleaning clay is available at PAS, or any auto parts

store, and the NanoSkin pads are available at PAS, online, or in some auto parts stores. After you clay (or NanoSkin) the paint should be very smooth and should feel like glass using the same plastic sandwich bag test. If you don’t see any improvement after you clay, your paint was probably in very good shape to begin with. Once you finish with the clay (or NanoSkin) process the next step is based on the condition of your paint. If you see swirls or small scratches in the clear coat in bright sunlight or under bright lights and you want these removed, you will need to polish your car. There are numerous brands of polish (Griot’s, Menzerna, Meguires, Mothers, etc). They each generally will have a numbering system that measures the aggressiveness of the polish. Always use the least aggressive polish that you think will take out the scratches you have in your paint. This may require you to experiment a bit with different polishes. Also, the foam pad you use with your orbital buffer (not a rotary buffer) will impact how much cutting action the polish will provide. If any scratches are deep, and are through the clear coat and into the colored paint below it, polish will not remove them. If you choose to polish your car yourself I would suggest you research the polishing process (it is not that hard) or if you don’t feel comfortable take your car to a professional to have it done. AutoGeek.net has an extensive section on polishing do’s and don’ts. After you polish (or if you decide you don’t need to polish) you should provide some protection for your paint. This protection will come in the form of a synthetic paint sealant or wax. Paint sealant will last from 6 months to a year depending on the environment your car will see. A good carnauba based wax will last from 10-15 weeks (some say 6 weeks), again
PERFORMANCE AUTO SPA DEMO continued . . . . .
depending on the environment. So if you don’t have time to wax your car 3-4 times a year a good paint sealant is probably the best choice. Why would you ever use wax when a paint sealant lasts so much longer? Some people feel that a waxed car has a “deeper” shine than a car with sealant. Good waxes and sealants are available from all of the major car care manufacturers (including from Griot’s and Menzerna’s available at PAS) and most care enthusiasts have their preferences. You can find hundreds of useful (and often contradictory) suggestions on the internet for the best wax or sealants. I have used both Griot’s and Meguires sealants on my Miata and don’t see much difference between the two in looks, life, or ease of use. I hope this summary clarifies the steps discussed at the PAS demo. Thanks for participating. Kevin Rhodes 04-02-14

From Autoblog March 2014 Ask a car enthusiast what the best driver's car on the road is, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata is very likely to come up rather quickly. Unjustly saddled with a reputation as a "chick's car," the Miata has been, over its three generations, one of the finest driving instruments ever built - it's light, agile and rear-wheel drive with direct, snappy steering, an engine that revels in being revved and a precise, smooth-shifting transmission. The fact that it's ridiculously affordable and reliable is simply a bonus. It should come as no surprise then, that a car with these traits has endured for 25 years, a milestone reached only by some of the most famous nameplates in the auto industry - Corvette, Mustang, F-150, SL, M3 and so on. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Jay Leno spent some time with the little roadster that could, while also chatting with two of the Mazda employees that were central to the MX-5's arrival on the world's automotive scene, Bob Hall and Tom Matano.

Byers Mazda Customer Car Expo BMC Members: Please hold the date of Saturday, June 14, 12noon until 4pm, for us to participate in the Byers Mazda Customer Car Expo. All I know at this point is what is printed below but more details will follow closer to the event. I would envision the BMC having a small booth and perhaps some examples of all three generations of Miata's. Maybe an entire BMC corral with as many Miata's as we can provide!! This is also the date of our first Annual BMC Picnic scheduled at Blendon Woods, 5pm. This should not be a conflict since the Byers event is scheduled for the afternoon and the club picnic is scheduled for the evening. Mark your calendars. Kevin Kevin, Byers Mazda Subaru is hosting a Customer Car Expo on Saturday June 14
th, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will take place at our dealership. We are inviting Mazda and Subaru customers to display their cars at the show. I have also arranged for a handful of vendors to be present. So far, the list of confirmed vendors includes The Outdoor Source, Best Buy, Columbus Car Audio, the Ohio Parks & Natural Resources department, Scentsy, Origami Owl, and Thirty-One. We will also have a food truck on the premises. Please know that I am still in the planning stages of this event, but the date and time are solid. Would you mind spreading the word to the Miata Club? I will keep you in the loop via e-mail as the details fall into place. Thanks! Nicole Fisher Customer Care Coordinator | Byers Mazda Subaru Direct: 614-923-4557 | Switchboard: 614-792-2455
