Introduction
What comes first in your mind when you hear the word fandom? Are you
included in a fandom? Furthermore, was idolizing something or somebody can make a great
impact to ones life? How can we say that a person is involved in a fandom? These are only
some of the questions that this paper aims at answering.
We know that being a fan of something or somebody is somewhat common to our
society. But, we really dont know the exact impact of this to lives of fans. It is usual to see
people idolizing artists, music icons, novels, books, sports icons and many others. As a fan, it is
ordinary to buy their albums, collect their pictures, read their articles, watch their performances,
and go to fan club meetings in order to show admiration to their idol. Oftentimes, due to this
sensation of being a fan, they even try to be like his/her idol, from his/her looks and style,
fashion, speech, and most of all, their personality. This phenomenon refers to what we call
fandom.
Performances connote a deeper understanding than the idea of an act done on
stage, but rather it includes the performer, the stage, fashion, act, and its audiences. The
performances vary because of the factors that affect it such as the talent of the performer,
creativity of the act, catchy design of the stage, and others. Every performance plays a vital role
on the audiences minds - either good or bad. Their mind might grasp the ideology they have
seen on the performance and then, criticize or manifest admiration into it.
The word fan for many is just the same as the word fandom, however,
according to Andrea MacDonald, as cited by deVries (2010), a fan has an involvement in many
activities that is helping him/her to satisfy his/her preferences and tastes. But once the fan tries to

go in many other functions of his/her idols, for example, trying to be look like his/her idol, form
fashion accessories, clothes, looks, style, and is already performing the personality of his/her
idol, it is now considered as fandom.
Fiske (1996) has a different meaning of fandom. According to him, fandom is a
typical amenity or benefit of popular culture in the individual society. It chooses from the
repertoire of mass entertainment performers, and takes them into the cultures of a selected
audience. He associated the phenomenon of fandom to the cultural forms that masses dominate -
such as pop music, romance novels, comics, movie and television shows and icons, and even in
sports. Fiske also defines three fans reaction to the text of choice. Texts or commercial
commodities are the objects of fandom such as celebrities, music videos, movies, teams and etc.
First is the Semiotic productivity. It is when the fans use their object of fandom to create social
meaning in their own lives. An example of this is a fan who gains confidence watching his or her
favorite character on Television. Second is enunciative productivity. It is when the fans express
their fandom to the outside world through speech or appearance. Example of this are fans
wearing their favorite teams jersey. Lastly is the textual productivity. It is when the fans create
texts based on their object of fandom. One of the examples of the textual productivity is fan
fiction.
There are also people who can be considered as anti-fans - they are readers or
viewers who find the cause for their dislike in something which may vary from having
previously watched the show and having found it intolerable; to having a dislike in genre,
directors, or star; to having seen the previews or ads, or seen or heard unfavorable reviews. On
the other hand, there are also non-fans. They are the readers or viewers who do view or read text,
but do not have any intense involvement. Being a fan requires discipline, whereas being a non-
8/8/2019 Performance in the Post Modern World:Fandom(final paper)
6/23
fan is considerably more open and nebulous in category and practice, involving considerable in
and out of different viewing positions.
In relation to fandom, there are people who are fans of postmodern performances.
However, what is postmodernism, and how it is related to a performance? According to Mitchell
(1989), postmodernism is actually an undefined word, however, he tried to described fandom as
a set of critical, strategic, and rhetorical practices employing concepts such as differences,
repetition, traces, similarities, and hyper-reality to destabilize other concepts such as presence,
identity, historical progress, epistemic certainty, and univocal meaning. On the other hand,
Abunag & Co (2004), defines postmodernism in general as a consciousness, a way of thinking, a
mode of life and thought, which maybe conscious or not, a perspective that defines ones attitude
towards reality and existence. Robinson (as cited by Mitchell, 1989), stated that it is a suitable
label of a set of attitudes, beliefs, values, and emotions about what it means to be living in the
modern world. Postmodernism is also been regarded as post structuralism. Poststructuralism is
defined as any of various theories or methods of analysis, including deconstruction and some
psychoanalytic theories, that deny the validity of structuralism's method of binary opposition and
maintain that meanings and intellectual categories are shifting and unstable. Relating it to aperformance, there are principles underlying the concept of postmodernism. It is stated that for a
performance to be postmodern, it should oppose the original interpretation of a traditional
performance, such as in a theatre, and therefore it can be open for changes, such as in translation.
There, the performer is more of an artist than a character in a performance, and there is always
something new and unusual in the whole context of the presentation. It is also described as a
non-narrative and non-representational theater in which the traditional forms, genres and
practices are abandoned and non-linguistic modes of performing such as what they called as

gestus. Gestus are descriptive visual interpretation of something and usually it is in the form of
body language or gesture which is said, the key component of postmodern performances.
Therefore, postmodern performances try to change everything that is usual, and it seeks more
attention from the audience and fans than in a typical performance.
Himmelfarb, however, stated the would-be negative effect of being amazed in
postmodernism. He said that Postmodernism entices us with the siren call of liberation and
creativity, but it may be an invitation to intellectual and moral suicide. This statement can
prove that postmodern performances affect the peoples mentality and how they perceive life in a
negative manner. It may bring suicidal or hostile activities to the people especially to those who
patronize this kind of performances.
According to Nicholas Cook, broad cultural developments associated with post
structuralism and postmodernism have placed an emphasis on receptionon performance rather
than on inherent meaningbut the reflection of these developments in musicology has been
skewed by that disciplines retention of the concept of music as written text. Cook argues that
just as writings about music influence performances, so performance style has an impact on
musicology, creating the prospect of a historiography predicated not on compositional innovation
but on music as it is experienced in everyday life. Daniel Leech-Wilkinson (as cited in Cook,
2010), further explores the process wherein developments in performance precede changes in
verbal interpretation in musicology and performance.
David Antin, an American theorist and performance artist, regarded
postmodernism as a living movement that had released art from the intellectually formulated
cage of modernism.

Consolidating the different views about postmodernism and fandom, its
continuous existence is a boundless realm of the performances of such great talented artists.
Thus, fandom in the postmodern world creates a deeper, concrete, and ambiguous picture of
the performances which will lead us to another definition of this word as one of the research
objectives. This paper also aims to examine how the postmodern performances greatly affect
their fans. This paper also aims to evaluate fandom as a performance and fandom as a form of
escapism through the fans activity, action, language, fashion, behavior, personality, and even
sexuality in order to identify the reality behind the concept of fandom. It does not include those
fans who patronize text materials but rather, it only focuses on the fans that perform onstage, just
as their idols. It is also limited to the discussion of the another world that was created by the
fans minds due to their lack or deficiency in psychological and/or social perspective which can
be said, their way of escapism. These factors would be a great help in understanding the
questions in the research.
In general, this research paper argues that fandom, itself, is a form of escape
whereby, the fans fulfill the lackness in their personalities or cope to their personal instabilities.
As they perform like their idols, they create another world wherein, they can act, speak, perform
and dress far different from the way they are before. At the same time, their admiration was
fulfilled because of their performance. And this performance is influenced by the postmodern
period.

Methodology
The study involves a careful analysis of the gathered data based on a perspective
of Sigmund Freud, in his study about the Psychoanalysis Theory. According to him, the
psychoanalysis theory is devoted to the study of the human psychological functioning and
behavior. He referred that the thoughts of a human person, including his fantasies, social
interaction, and dreams can affect his character because of the induction of his unconscious
mind.
In detail, he discussed that there are two fundamental principles at work: the
pleasure principle, where a person is told to do what it feels good; and the reality principle,
where the person is told to subordinate the pleasure into something at work. In case the pleasure
could not be achieved, it should undergo a psychological process called sublimation where
desires for that pleasure should be subordinated into another thing or action that can be useful or
productive. These unfulfilled desires are repressed into what Freud coined the term unconscious
mind. Freud explains the principal tenets on which psychoanalytic theory is based. He begins
with an explanation of the three forces of the psychical apparatus--the id, the ego, and the
superego. The id has the quality of being unconscious and contains everything that is inherited,
everything that is present at birth, and the instincts. The ego has the quality of being conscious
and is responsible for controlling the demands of the id and of the instincts, becoming aware of
stimuli, and serving as a link between the id and the external world. In addition, the ego responds
to stimulation by either adaptation or flight, regulates activity, and strives to achieve pleasure and
avoid unpleasure. Finally, the superego, whose demands are managed by the id, is responsible

for the limitation of satisfactions and represents the influence of others, such as parents, teachers,
and role models, as well as the impact of racial, societal, and cultural traditions.
It also involves the method of conducting personal and online interviews with at
least one person who is best fitted as a fan of a post-modern performer in order to know if
fandom can be related to the concept of escapism. In this case, the researchers have conducted an
interview with Mr. Vinzon Booc, popularly known as Lady Gagita, a parody character of a
popular postmodern performer and singer, Lady Gaga. He made parodies of Lady Gaga that
reached more than a million views in the video streaming site YouTube. From then, he is
acclaimed as the Lady Gaga of the Philippines. This form of method would clearly explain
how his mind of a person under fandom is greatly affected and state if fandom where he is in is
being a form of escapism or the focusing of one person into an activity or work in order to
escape his/her problems or lack in his/her formative years.
There is also a careful analysis of the performances of the postmodern era through
the compilation of videos and photographs of its performers, specifically the photos and videos
of the postmodern performer Lady Gaga, together with the parody photos and videos of Lady
Gagita. This could help to know more about what is fandom relating to the world of postmodern
performances through the evaluation of these materials.

Results
The purpose of the research is to prove that there are two phases of fandom under
the influence of the postmodernism namely performance and escapism. In order to prove the
argument, the researchers conducted a structured interview with Vinzon Leojay Booc, more
known as Lady Gagita. Two types of interviews are conducted: an online/e-mail interview, and
personal interview that took place in his house at San Juan City.
Lady Gagita is the screen name who imitates the well-known postmodern
performer Lady Gaga, or Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in real life. When he was still
young, he already knew that he is a homosexual. Since then, he was not fond of doing boyish act
but later on, his parents discovered it. He was allowed to be a gay, however, he was advised not
to cross-dress and have a relationship to the same sex. According to Vinzon, he got his screen
name on PerezHilton.com wherein Lady Gaga was called as Gagita. Because such word has a
translation in Filipino language, thus, giving him an idea to use it as his screen name. He started
imitating Lady Gaga since January 2010 but before, he was also imitating Beyonce Knowles.
About the issue of Lady Gaga as a devil-worshipper or anti-Christ, Vinzon doesnt believe in it.
He added that it is just because of misinterpretation on the way she acts, dress and including her
album, entitled as Fame Monster. Also for him, Lady Gaga is the most bizarre and outlandish
artists he had ever seen, making her different among the other artists. In terms of Lady Gagas
performance, he said that Gaga is like a fierce goddess fallen down from heaven and so magical.
Furthermore, his favorite song of his idol is Telephone which he had his parody and paved way
for career and luck of Vinzon Booc. He mentioned a lot of information about his idol such as,
Lady Gaga as a queen of Twitter, the reigning public figure on Facebook, and being the
8/8/2019 Performance in the Post Modern World:Fandom(final paper)

most viewed on YouTube. He mentioned that he will continue imitating Lady Gaga as long as
his idol and his fans are there. When he was asked if time comes that he will be given a chance to
see Lady Gaga in personal, he would do two things and say something. First, he would like to
perform with her onstage playing her medley songs. Second, he would give his idol a
compilation of the videos he had done. And he will say, You changed my life. Furthermore, he
stated that among the artists, excluding Lady Gaga, he also loves Beyonce Knowles.
Lady Gagita is the girl side of Vinzon Booc according to him. She is described by
him as a fierce woman whose personality changes when she is performing onstage. On the other
hand, Vinzon Booc is the male side of Lady Gagita. He is a simple boy who supports Lady
Gagita through directing, editing and producing her videos and parodies. When he was asked
about the changes that happened on him when he starts impersonating, he mentioned four things.
First, he became responsible; second, he met high-class or socialites and critics; third, having a
busy schedule due to his performances; and, lastly, people are expecting extravagant things from
him. Lady Gagita mentioned that what happens on Lady Gaga, happens on him encountering
haters and lovers. His differences to Gaga are in terms of their voices (where he has male
vocals), popularity and materials being used in their music videos. When he was asked if he was
just want to get the public attention, he insist that it was just by chance that the public was able to
recognize his videos. In addition, there are many advantages of being Lady Gagita, since through
this, he is loved by many fans, and it gives him different opportunities and pushes him to work
hard. He feels the admiration though the gifts that he is receiving and the acceptance of the
people wherein, he was entitled as Pinoy Lady Gaga, or the Lady Gaga of the Philippines.
The disadvantages of being on his status right now are being alone since, he is from Davao; and

the haters who keep on bringing him down. He added that other people who recognize him still
cannot believe that he is Lady Gagita.
In his personal interview, he cleared all what he answered in the online interview,
adding more information about being a die-hard fan of Lady Gaga. First, he mentioned about the
background of his family. He was the eldest in the three siblings of Mr. and Mrs. Booc. His
father was a driver and his mother has a store. In order to help his parents, he decided to stop on
studying and start working at the early age of seventeen. Vinzon Booc also shared a glimpse of
his childhood experiences. He mentioned that he realized being a gay when he was just a kid and
kept this secret to his parents. Vinzon was also an active participant in every program or event in
their school since elementary without informing his parents. His parents accept his being
homosexual when he was in fourth year high school but his parents refrained him from cross-
dressing and having a homosexual relationship.
The next part of the interview clearly explained him as Lady Gagita. He
mentioned, Lady Gagita differ from Vinzon. For him, Lady Gagita is the performer and
Vinzon is the director, make-up artist and the editor of the every video of Lady Gagita. He
always supports Lady Gagita. Originally, he was idolizing Beyonce until Lady Gaga arrived at
her unique, professional and fierce character. Since imitating Lady Gaga, Vinzon gain popularity
and his social environment changed in such a way he gained more friends. But the relationship
with his relatives didnt change. Most of his relatives still do not believe that through his talent
he can change the status they have. Vinzon is very determined to prove himself to his relatives
and to defend that his purpose in imitating Lady Gaga was not because of income but for the
sake of well-being and to enhance his talent and self-identity. Also, when it comes to
performances onstage; he feels that he is Lady Gaga and not Lady Gagita. He is very
8/8/2019 Performance in the Post Modern World:Fandom(final paper)

professional, that no matter what happens, the show must go on. Most of these performances
were dedicated for the gay community who also has mutual feelings with him. Vinzon said that
when he transform into Lady Gagita, he is fulfilling the confidence he never had whenever he is
being Vinzon.
Based on the other method of the analysis of the photos and videos of Lady Gaga
and Lady Gagita, the researchers found something in common with their performances: the
fierceness of their acts in the videos. However the parody is different from the original in such a
way that the materials used in the parody is improvised. For example, in the music video
Alejandro, Lady Gagita used a pair of hangers as an accessory compared with the replica of a
rifle from Lady Gaga. In addition, some performances of Lady Gagita are not as intense as of
Lady Gaga. The researchers can say that Vinzon Booc is very creative when it comes in
improvising the materials he used in making his music videos. In addition, he is aware of what
should be the things to be included in every parody that he is doing. But on the other hand, he
still try to capture the emotion and sensuality of the original videos made by Lady Gaga.

Discussion
Based on the results generated from the interviews and analysis of the
compilation, the following shows the discussion of each of them. First of all, Vinzon Booc or
Lady Gagita in the performance world seeks for acceptance and acknowledgement from the
people especially those who are close to him. It is because this is what his personality lacked
from in his formative years. It shows that there is something missing or there is lack in his
personality. There would be no seeking for acceptance and acknowledgement if his life is
complete and perfect. Based on the perspective of Sigmund Freud, Vinzon Booc may have a
fixation based on the erotogenic zones of a person. It shows that during his early childhood days,
he could not enjoyed a particular phase due to the prohibition of persons in authority on him, that
is why he tries to fulfill it in his adult life, and it could be the act of being a fan of Lady Gaga, as
well as imitating her. There is a loss of identity which is caused by identity crisis. Identity crisis
is the failure to achieve ego identity during adolescence. This identity crisis is common to
teenagers since, Vinzon Booc is still a teenager he is undergoing this kind of problem. As he
performs as Lady Gagita, he fulfills his pleasure and avoid the unpleasure the ego which is
the key point of Identity crisis.
In addition, Vinzon Booc stated that when he was a child, he began to be a
homosexual. His parents and relatives allowed him to be a gay; however, he is not allowed to
cross-dress and to have a relation with the same sex. The prohibition of his parents and relatives
can relate to what he is now today. According to Freud, the superego concept shows that the
persons having authority to a particular individual in the case of Vinzon Booc, his parents and
8/8/2019 Performance in the Post Modern World:Fandom(final paper)
16/23
relatives; are responsible for the development and shaping of the morality, of what is good and
what is bad, of that individual.
However, Vinzon Booc insisted that he wanted to be free from the prohibition of his
family, and that is why he is performing as Lady Gagita as an escape from the reality. In this
case, Freud explained that, taking him as an example, the side of Lady Gagita, it is the pleasure
principle, where Vinzon is doing what he thinks is right or enjoying, and therefore fulfilling his
desire. These things include being a girl, cross dressing, and having a homosexual partner. But as
Vinzon Booc, there comes his reality side, where he is not allowed to do so. These unfulfilled
desires as being repressed into the unconscious mind, and therefore, it is subordinated into their
forms, such as dreams, jokes, and fantasies. In the personal interview, he is making jokes as a
result of that repression. However, the more important is that, due to these unfulfilled desires, he
tries to hide from the real world by being a fan and an imitator of Lady Gaga. Freud also explains
that the unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside
of our conscious awareness. Most of the contents of the unconscious are unacceptable or
unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict. According to Freud, the unconscious
continues to influence our behavior and experience, even though we are unaware of these
underlying influences. In the case of Vinzon Booc, he is unconscious about the changes that are
happening to him as he tries to portray Lady Gagita on his every performance.
As stated in the introduction of the study is the question of the pros and cons of
being involved into fandom. Based also from the interview, Vinzon Booc has acquired the
fierceness, professionalism, and uniqueness traits of Lady Gaga. For as long as the artist has
good traits, it can be influential to the fans. However, if the artist has something wrong regarding
his/her personality, it will depend on the fans whether they can be carried by the bad influence of

17/23
17
the person based on his/her shape of his morality, as Freud has explained in the superego
concept.
Vinzon also said that his purpose of imitating Lady Gaga is for the sake of well
being and enhance his confidence and self-being. It only shows that it is true that fandom greatly
affected the mind and character of the person. For Vinzon, the influence that fandom has given to
him is the gaining of confidence and self-identity. In this statement, fandom improves his
personality both as Lady Gagita ad Vinzon Booc, every now and then. Due to his confidence in
the performance as Lady Gagita, he can say that he is Lady Gaga and not Lady Gagita. The
confidence shown by Vinzon is further explained by MacDonald in his definition of fandom. It
connotes that as a person involved in fandom, he feels that he is Lady Gaga because of his
imitation to her in every detail of her fashion, looks, actions, and gestures.
In the analysis of the photos and videos of Lady Gaga, and Lady Gagita, each of
the comparisons of the two is different in concept and structure. It is therefore an indication that
it is a postmodern performance, according to the definition of Robinson (as cited by Mitchell,
1989).
Summing up all the gathered data, researches, and results, the research can now
devise its own meaning of fandom. Fandom, therefore, is a way of creating another world behind
our consciousness that enables a fan to escape from the reality and build his/her satisfaction of
acting and performing onstage. The person involved in a fandom loss his/her identity because of
acquiring the traits and actions of the artist. In addition, it brings advantages and disadvantages
to the fans psychological and social aspects.
There are also two phases of fandom: one as non-active fandom, and the other one
active. The non-active fandom describes people who have ordinary involvement with regards to
8/8/2019 Performance in the Post Modern World:Fandom(final paper)
18/23
being a follower of a performance and its performers. The active fandom on the other hand, is
characterized by a deep involvement with being a fan of a performance in such a way the fan
adopts all the qualities and personality of the performer.
Postmodern performances contradict the traditional performances, wherein it has
a unique and unusual content that cannot be ordinarily seen. It also seeks more attention and it
changes what is originally a typical performance. Furthermore, the one who acts in a postmodern
performance is more of an artist rather than a character in a typical performance. Fans of these
performances are more aggressive and expressive in their fashion, gestures, and character.
The researchers suggest to the other researchers to have more respondents to
clearly tackle the reason why people enter into fandom. In addition, more time and effort should
be exerted to clearly define the postmodern performances and the post modern period. There is
also a need to further discuss the analysis of Freuds psychoanalysis theory in relation to fandom.

Questionnaires Lady Gagita (Vinzon Booc)Name: Vinzon Leojay Booc Age: 17Address: Araullo St, San Juan
INSTRUCTIONS: Please answer the questions below honestly. Well-explained answer will be
much appreciated. You could answer the following questions in English or in Filipino languageor any of these for your convenience. Thank you!Questions:
1. How you were able to arrive on your screen name Lady Gagita?- I discovered this screen name on PerezHilton.com, Perez calls Lady Gaga
with a mock name of Gagita. So I guess, Gagita is like a Pinoy-inspired word, so Iused this name.
2. When do you start impersonating Lady Gaga?
- I started imitating Gaga way back January 2010, but originally I was
imitating Beyonce.
3. Are you aware of the issue about Lady Gaga as a Devil-worshipper or Anti-
Christ? What is your opinion about this? After knowing it, would you still want toimitate her?
- I dont think Gaga was a devil-worshipper, and that issue was just risenbecause of her 2nd album, The Fame Monster whereas the concept were monsters
and devils That issue doesnt make sense. It was just her style that made her sobizarre. And theres no concrete evidence that she is really an illuminati. What
you see is what you get Thats the best thing to believe. As long as we dont seeGaga worshiping the devil, then theres no reason for us to believe that she really
is an Anti-christ.
4. Why do you choose to idolize Lady Gaga? What are her qualities that youwould like to imitate?
-Shes the most bizarre and outlandish artists I ever seen. She has this incredible
concepts, and unpredictable fashion sense that made her so different from theother artists.
5. What is/are the similarities/differences of Lady Gagita to Vinzon Booc?- Lady Gagita is the girl side of Vinzon Booc, she is the fierce woman
whose personality changes when she is onstage. Vinzon Booc is the male side ofLady Gagita, a simple boy who supports Lady Gagita on her videos. He is the one
who directs, edits, and produces Gagitas videos.-
6. If you will be meeting Lady Gaga, what will you do and say to her?

14. What is your difference as compared to Lady Gaga?(if there is any)- The difference is that Gaga can sing but Gagita cant reach the range of her
pitch, though Gagita can sing but with a male vocal. Gaga is famous worldwide
and in all fields but Gagita was just famous on the internet and on the Philippines.Gaga spends a lot on her videos, but Gagita just used her creativity ang ingenuityto improvise the expensive things Gaga used.
15. Aside from Lady Gaga, who is/are the celebrity/ies you admire?- Second to Gaga is Beyonce Knowles.
16. What is your purpose in imitating Lady Gaga to get the publics attentionor just want to satisfy your admiration to her?
- I didnt mean to catch the publics attention, I just want to be her in adifferent way, I just want to showcase the Filipinos creativity through imitating
her in a very Pinoy way.
17. Are you a homosexual? If yes, when do you realize that youre homosexual?
How did your family and other people accept it?-Yes, I am. I just realized being a homosexual when I was just a little kid. I am
not fond of playing robots and other boyish toys instead I am fond of dolls, andgirly stuffs. My family accepted the fact of my sexuality when I was on fourth
year high school, they just accepted the reality but advised me not to crossdress, and to avoid having boyfriends.
18. Does impersonating Lady Gaga affects how you perceive life?- Yes, I think everything happens to Gaga now also happens to me. She
encounters haters, and she also loved by her fans. Her vision in life were similarto mine.
