IT STARTS WITH ASSESSMENTTo deliver BIM-enabled services, organizations invest considerable resources in implementing software tools, upgrading equipment and training staff. To translate these investments into overall BIM performance and specific model uses, it is important to establish current capability, define future targets, identify capability gaps, and then develop strategies to bridge these gaps.
Measuring performance is at the core of performance improvement. Without measurement, an organization cannot
accurately determine whether its investment in software implementation or staff training has returned the expected dividends. Also, without measurement, organizations would find it difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of developing standards, workflows and protocols. Finally, without measurement, organizational performance cannot be effectively monitored, managed or steered to meet strategic business objectives.
While measurement is an important activity in itself, not everything that can be measured should be measured. Only those metrics
that depict current capability or can help predict future performance should be measured. So to avoid wasting valuable time and effort, it is critical to identify WHAT to measure and what NOT to measure.
For capability measurement to yield meaningful results, a significant quantity of data must be collected and collated into performance
benchmarks and analytical charts. Extensive data collection - if not done properly - runs the risk of disrupting operational workflows and thus adversely affecting performance improvement. Also, measurement activities - if not adequately communicated - may affect staff commitment to performance improvement. Therefore, HOW measurements are conducted is an important factor in avoiding needless disruptions and securing adequate participation by staff.
To identify what and how to measure BIM performance, Change Agents invested three years in researching BIM competency/
capability and in developing the tools needed to measure them. Much of this research is published through peer-reviewed articles and is available online (contact us for a copy). As a direct outcome of this research, testing and endless calibration, Change Agents developed BIM Excellence (BIMe), a unique approach for identifying, measuring and improving the BIM Competency of individuals, organizations and teams.
BIM Excellence utilizes a combination of online tools and onsite services to collect and validate data. BIMe
measures individual competencies, organizational systems, past performance indicators and team configurations to generate online charts and detailed reports. These are used – not only to establish current capabilities but - to provide clear routes for professional development, organizational learning and overall performance improvement.
For more detailed information about BIMe’s unique approach to performance assessment, please contact us to schedule a phone call or online presentation.

ORGANIZATIONS
BIM Excellence evaluates the BIM Capability and BIM Maturity of all types of organizations involved in the design, construction and operation of facilities
BIM Excellence establishes an individual’s BIM profile through a dedicated assessment tool. This unique profile is then compared to target profiles (roles, project requirements, etc) and used as a basis to deliver tailored training and professional development
BIMe measures design/construction projects using metrics specific to each Model Use. Organizations can compare several projects to establish areas where progress was achieved or is still lacking
BIMe compares the compiled BIM competency and overall capability of all types of teams: work teams (within an organization), project teams (across organizations) and organizational teams (alliances and partnerships)

FOUR ASSESSMENT TYPESBIMe is a unique approach to assess and improve the BIM performance of individuals, organizations and teams. BIMe includes a set of Discovery Tools (online) and Evaluation Services (onsite) to collect statistical data and specialized measurements. These are used to identify actual BIM performance and compare it against project/client requirements, industry benchmarks or previous performance results. There are four types of BIM assessments:

TOP BENEFITS CORPORATE USES
BIM Excellence Individual Discovery helps organizations to measure and understand the detailed capabilities of their staff. They can then offer each one of them the training/development mix that best suits their unique roles and responsibilities. Account holders can also aggregate and analyze the Competency Profiles of 100s of their employees. Using the Competency Dashboard, organizations will clearly see the overall competency picture to make informed training and recruitment decisions.

INDIV IDUAL ASSESSMENTBIM Excellence Individual Discovery assists professionals to identify and develop their BIM knowledge and experience. Using an intuitive online tool, individuals assess themselves against tens of BIM topics. Once an individual’s current level of BIM competency has been established, it can then be compared to a target competency profile to identify the areas which require training and/or professional development.

ORGANIZATIONAL ASSESSMENTBIMe Organizational Assessments measure the BIM Capability Maturity of all types of organizations involved in the design, construction and operation of facilities. Through an objective online assessment (Discovery Tools) and onsite validation (Evaluation Services), BIMe generates a unique and confidential profile that accurately depicts organizational abilities.
BIMe delivers a comprehensive analysis of a company’s BIM capability maturity. Organizational assessments include 500-800 items organized in 56 Competency Topics: Information Management, Procurement Practices, Skill Management, etc. At the end of each evaluation, BIMe provides online charts, comparisons to industry benchmarks, and detailed analysis reports.

PROJECT ASSESSMENTBIM Excellence collects both current and legacy data to comprehensively establish organizational capability and maturity. Using specialized metrics, BIMe evaluates a range of Past Performance Information (PPI)s including quantity/quality of Model Uses. Data collected from completed projects are instrumental in establishing benchmarks and predicting future performance.

TEAM ASSESSMENTBIM Excellence assesses the capability of teams and ad-hoc groups. By collating competency profiles of several individuals and/or organizations, managers can evaluate each team’s potential deliverables against defined project requirements. Managers can then restructure the team or provide training to individual members as required to fulfil project requirements.

)BIM Excellence collates and analyses data in many useful configurations. In addition to assessing individuals and organizations, BIMe tools can aggregate the competency data of groups and teams.
For example, BIMe can assess the capability of:
Work Teams (WT):Individuals from within a single organization;
Project Teams (PT):Individuals from different organizations; and
Organizational Teams (OT):Two or more organizations which have entered into a collaborative partnership or alliance to deliver a common project.
Also, BIM Excellence tools can isolate the capability of a selected number of
individuals according to defined criteria. For example, BIMe can aggregate the competency of all architects or all engineers across a multi-disciplinary organization. This flexibility facilitates resource management and planning to meet the detailed requirements of specific clients or projects.

An overall organizational assessment resembles a pyramid. At the base of this pyramid are individual assessments which capture foundational competency (levels and distribution of skill, knowledge and experience among staff). These competency data are used to generate detailed benchmarks and aggregate competency profiles.
Moving up the assessment pyramid, BIMe measures the capability/maturity of organizational systems which typically include information

management practices, collaborative workflows, and administrative protocols.
BIMe also captures Past Performance Information (PPIs) by assessing sample completed projects. PPIs reflect organizational expertise and help predict future performance. Finally, all captured data - representing individuals, organizational systems and PPIs - are then aggregated to generate the overall BIM Capability Maturity Profile of an organization or organizational unit.

BIMe IMPROVEMENT LIFECYCLEBIMe performance improvement is conducted in multiple rounds (each round covers an office or a business stream). Rounds have a six-phase lifecycle that starts with identifying requirements, assessing current capabilities and analysing data collected. This is then followed by a detailed planning phase leading to the actions necessary to improve performance. At the end of each round, achievements are measured and used to refine plans and inform the next performance improvement round.
