Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry Inspection
The Shagya-Arabian is quickly becoming the breed of choice for riders and equine enthusiasts in all disci-plines. It owes its noble qualities of devotion to its rider, a kind temperament, hardiness, size, athleticism, and jumping ability to a selective and dedicated breeding program and a history of rigorous perfor-mance testing.
The result? A rare and versatile equine partner
equally at home in dressage, endurance, show jumping, eventing, harness and pleasure riding.

What is a Shagya-Arabian?
Today’s Shagya-Arabian is a rare, but versatile sport
horse equally at home at dressage, eventing, show
jumping, hunting, endurance, harness, and pleasure
riding.
The breed began in 1789 when the Hungarian military
set out to develop a new breed of horse that combined
the very best of Bedouin Arabians: elegance, endurance,
hardiness, athleticism, temperament, and devotion to
their rider, but with larger size, jumping ability, and riding
ease to master the rigors and versatility of a cavalry
horse. The intent of the program was to develop a superior horse that was equally at home
under saddle and in harness and that could be used to improve other breeds. So successful
was the breeding program that the Hapsburg’s Imperial Guard in Vienna and the Royal
Guard in Budapest were mounted on Shagya-Arabians, and Shagyas were the cavalry
officer’s horse of choice.
The breed’s name comes from a magnificent Bedouin stallion named Shagya, born in 1810,
bred (from Kehilan and Slglavy strains) and raised by the Bani Saher stud in Babolna,
Hungary. This magnificent stallion was renowned in his day not only for his perfect size, type,
and movement, but also for his ability as a sire to pass on these qualities to his offspring.
Today, virtually every Shagya-Arabian breeding line has his blood somewhere in it. Through
time, elite desert bred Arabians were
carefully added to the bloodlines, and
English Thoroughbreds and Lippizaners were
occasionally included in the breeding mix to
Page 4
Right from the outset, performance testing was
regarded as essential. Both mares and stallions
were put through rigorous tests, including
dressage, a 10- day 480 mile ride across plains,
forests and mountains, 2-mile sprints, and long
distance driving. Careful records were kept of
the horses’ jumping, speed, condition, and
disposition. New stallions were rigorously
progeny tested, including breeding to 30 mares a
year for 3 years, the mares differing in quality.
Ten were of low quality, ten of average quality, and ten high quality. The offspring were
carefully reviewed by committee, and if any did not meet the standards, the entire
group was sold off. Any mare or stallion that did not meeting the high standards were
culled and sold at auction, ensuring that only high performance bloodlines were used
in the breeding program.
The characteristics of the Shagya-Arabian are well established. The Shagya- Arabian
should have the appearance of a beautiful, elegant, and harmonious riding horse with
correctness of gaits and movements, who enjoys jumping and has good jumping ability,
has pleasant rhythm and rideability, is trusting, good natured, and willing to learn, and
has robust health, longevity, and fertility with stamina and frugality. Although there is
no longer a military need for Shagya- Arabians, all the noble qualities the breed
possesses, make it an ideal horse.

INSPECTION: Description of Events
Inspection for Mares and Stallions, Shagya-Arabian or purebred Arabian, consists of multiple,
mandatory phases. These include the Veterinary Exam, submission of SCID and DNA results, In-Hand and at
Liberty presentation, Under Saddle/Rideability, Interior Test, and Free Jump. Additionally, Open Competition
requirements in one of several disciplines must be completed and documented. Successful completion of
these requirements results in PShR Licensing and placement in the PShR Studbooks per their performance
and pedigree.
Evaluation of Geldings and Shagya Sporthorses, Shagya-Arabian or purebred Arabian, are evaluated
rather than inspected. Evaluation includes the choice of one or all of the following tests: In-Hand and at
Liberty presentation, Under Saddle/Rideability, Interior Test, and Free Jump. Successful completion of these
tests results in certification.
Veterinary Examination
All mares and stallions seeking licensing and breeding approval must stand for the licensed veterinarian at
the inspection site. The purpose of the exam is to look for anomalies, heart defects, existing faults of teeth or
testicles, deficiencies or other conditions indicating genetic predisposition. The exam will include but is not
limited to a flexion test and trot out on a hard surface.
In-Hand and At Liberty Presentation
Horses will be presented using the USDF Sporthorse In-Hand procedure. Horses will be shown on the triangle
and at liberty in both directions of the ring. The horses should be clean and well behaved. Handlers should
be appropriately dressed in conservative attire.
Grooms will be allowed in the arena to help encourage the horse to move in a natural manner. The judges
will evaluate the horse for ‘type’ and physical attributes of the head, neck, body and legs. On the triangle
and/or at liberty, the judges will score the horse’s movement at the walk, trot and canter.
Under Saddle/Rideability
To complete the Under Saddle/Rideability test, horses four (4) years of age or older will be ridden at a walk,
trot and canter in the discipline style of the riders' choice. Horses will be ridden both directions of the ring,
complete a 20 meter circle and cross the diagonal of the ring. There is a cross rail to jump at the gait of the
rider’s choice. If possible, two or three horses will work in the ring at one time. Mixing stallions with mares
can be an exception. Two test riders will ride the horse and report to the judges their overall impression.
Observations will include: Way of going and quality of the gait, overall impression, willingness to work,
temperament/obedience.

INSPECTION: Description of Events Continued
Interior Test
The Interior Test is designed to determine the character and temperament of the horse in an unusual situa-tion. The horse will be scored on his willingness to walk beside the handler in an easily managed fashion. When directed by the judge, the handler and the horse enter the arena. The horse should be next to the handler with some slack in the lead. The space between the handler and horse should remain consistent. The horse should have a pleasant and interested attitude with a flat walk. Overly excited response to obsta-cles as well as complete non-interest in the presented course will result in lost points. Optimally the horse remains manageable and calm when unexpected stimuli occur and exhibits a trusting, good- natured be-havior.
Free Jumping Protocol
The free jumping chute consists of 3 obstacles, in order: a simple cross-rail, a cross rail with a horizontal rail directly behind, and an oxer. The handler will first walk the horse into and alongside of the chute to allow him to see and become familiar with the chute set-up and jump elements. Evaluation criteria: When jumping a horse should look bold, confident and happy while displaying good jumping ability. Front legs should be tucked while the hind legs are open. The back should be well-arched (bascule) and elastic. The horse should be able to determine the appropriate take off and landing over the jump. Undesirable jump-ing technique include jumping without control, hanging forelegs, head too high, retracted hind legs and a stiff, straight or hollow back.
Branding of PShR Shagya-Arabians
As per the ISG RZBO and the PShR ZBO (breeding guidelines) Shagya-Arabian horses (including foals) may be branded by the branding delegate on the left thigh with the breed specific “Shagya-Sun” brand. Any ex-ceptions must to be approved by ISG. To qualify for branding a Shagya-Arabian must have both a sire and dam belonging to Books I or II. Branding is a birthright of legitimate, purebred offspring; it does not de-pend on inspection or performance testing.

Judit Erzsébet Kovács
PShR Inspection Judge
Judit’s choice of profession was determined by her fascination
towards riding and horses. She was graduated from the
Agricultural University of Gödöllő as a certified engineer in
agriculture with specialty in animal breeding biotechnology.
Soon after the university years she also was educated as a
horse riding instructor. At that time she had already had her
first junior horse, a two-year-old unridden mare of the
Hungarian breed Furioso of Mezőhegyes, whom she rode in
herself.
At the end of the ’90s she was able to live her dream: she got a
job in the Arabian Stud of Bábolna as a stud-book keeper
engineer and she also worked for the Society of Hungarian
Arabian Horse Breeders, where she was a member of the
Breeding Committee. After some reorganization and personal
changes in Bábolna she left the stud, and moved to County
Tolna, where she became an animal breeding inspector at the
County Office of the Hungarian Agricultural Ministry.
Between the years 2003-2016 she led the County Office of the
Agricultural and Rural Development Agency (Hungarian
paying agency for agricultural subsidies financed by the
European Union.)
Also during these 13 years she kept in touch with the Hungarian Arabian Horse Breeders Society: she was
asked to judge at stallion examinations in Bábolna first time in 2001 and since then almost every year. She
completed the ISG international judge course in 2006 after which she was invited to judge Shagya horses in
Austria, Switzerland and at international shows in Hungary. She considers it a great honour that together
with dr Walter Huber she had already judged for the PShR at the inspection-tour in the US in 2015.
From 2017 on she is the breeding-leader of the Society of Hungarian Arabian Horse Breeders.
She currently resides in SW-Hungary, in County Tolna with her horses. She still has her horses who are now
27 and 22 years old and already in pension. They are family members for their life-time. Judit found a new
activity for them, by joining the topics of horses, coaching and leadership: with the assistance of her horses
she supports leaders to develop their potential by experiential learning with horses.

Marie Johnson
PShR Inspection Judge
Born in Fontainebleau France, Marie Johnson showed an early interest
in riding. She competed at the Junior International level in France in
Show Jumping and Combined Eventing. After an internship at Saumur
French Riding Academy, she was licensed as a Riding Instructor by the
French Riding Federation. In the United States, Marie is an ‘R’ judge in
Dressage and an ‘r’ judge in Combined Eventing. For many years,
Marie’s horse related activities have included teaching, holding clinics,
and training, organizing shows, and judging. Marie has judged Dressage,
Combined Events and Sport horses all over the United States including
at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show in Scottsdale Arizona in February
2017. Marie continues to enjoy judging as an opportunity to provide
insight and guidance to the future generation of riders and horse
enthusiasts. Marie currently lives near Madison Wisconsin and enjoys
taking care of orchids and wild birds as well as spending time with her dog and horses.
Dr Scott Austin
PShR Inspection Veterinarian
Dr. Austin joined the faculty at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Currently, he
is the Head of Equine Medicine and Surgery and is an equine internal medicine clinician in the large animal
hospital. Dr. Austin also devotes his time to providing on-farm primary care to horses and showing students a
different side of equine practice than they see at the teaching hospital.
Board certified in equine internal medicine, Dr. Austin completed both a master's degree in veterinary para-
sitology and a residency here at Illinois. Before beginning his position as clinical associate professor in veteri-
nary medicine, Dr. Austin spent 13 years as an associate veterinarian at Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital
in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and taught at Waukesha County Technical College and Virginia-Maryland Re-
gional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Martha Rattner
PShR Test Rider
Martha has been training horses professionally for
over 35 years and has been a certified judge for 30
years, judging at such prestigious shows as the U.S.
and Canadian Nationals, Scottsdale Arabian Horse
Show, and the Australian National Horse Show, with
expertise in judging Arabians, Hackneys, National Show
Horses and American Saddlebreds.
Since beginning her riding career at the age of six,
Martha has gone on to train and show U.S. and
Canadian National Champions in Hunter, Show Hack,
Driving, Park, English Pleasure, Side Saddle and Native
Costume.
Martha’s love of horses came naturally; her mother,
Cecile Hetzel Dunn has been a multi-breed
horsewoman, judge and steward for over 40 years, and
her stepfather, the late Norman K. Dunn, was a past
president of AHA, as well as director of Cal Poly
University in Pomona CA. Growing up in Florida,
Martha rode as often as she could, and by high school was showing for Burr Hill Arabians.
After earning a Bachelors of Science from Northwestern State University in 1979, Martha continued pursuing
her love of horses, first by working for Marquis Farms in Scottsdale, then with Mike Nichols and Don
Delongpre in Santa Barbara, and finally at Varian Arabians.
After working for LaCroix Ltd. in 1991 and 1992, Martha struck out on her own in 1993 in Kentucky, and her
business eventually evolved into what is now Martha Murdock Stables.
Martha has continued to find success throughout the equine industry through judging, training and showing
over the past 35 years.

H. WineGlass Serenade
Owned by Linda Rudolphi, Presented by Olivia Rudolphi
Serenade is the 2009 edition of what has become a "Golden Cross". She is a full
sister to Syrah who continues her endurance career with Top Ten placings and
frequent Best Condition awards. Brothers include the charismatic Szolo and
Soave, both proving to be
elegant in dressage. In
addition, sister Sangria has
been successful in dressage
and becoming a serious
competitor in endurance.
Serenade is the sports car
model of the siblings, we are
anxious to see her future.
Page 13
H. WineGlass Szolo
Owned by Chris and Marty Power, Presented by Liz Brockhouse
H.WineGlass Szolo was on my “wish list” from the time he was born. Linda posted
on FaceBook that we would have to break her arm to get him. Undaunted, I had
his picture on my refrigerator for years.
Unfortunately, we had a four horse barn
and he would be our fifth. Between
Linda and Chris it was a tough sell.
Eventually, both relented, we built a
fifth stall and Szolo came home. I
couldn’t be happier. He’s everything I’d
dreamed about. He was started by, and
is currently in dressage training, with
Laurie Treber. Long-range plans are to
continue his dressage training and begin
his endurance career.
Page 14
HS. WineGlass Pik Two Buck Chuck
Owned and Presented by John Stafford
Three years ago, I was searching for a versatile horse
of good temperament, and sound confirmation that
could go the distance. “Chuck” was recommended to
me by my vet, Dr. Rachel Powell as a possible option.
She owned two Shagya Sport Horses and found they
are athletic, sensible, and intelligent. Chuck, now
seven (7), has demonstrated all of these admirable
qualities and continues to improve each year.
He moves down the trail at a workman like pace,
easily covering many miles with his strong, smooth
trot and quiet presence. Since learning Chuck’s dam
was a working ranch horse, we plan to make his next
adventure a western sport involving cows.
Page 15
KW Shiraz
Owned and Presented by Kayla Smith
Three years ago Shiraz came into my
life, originally to work with for a year
for the owners/breeders, but after a
year of working with her I knew I had
to own her, luckily knowing them so
well we worked out a deal.
In that year I had learned that she had
experience a bad slip/fall w a previous
trainer, which explained why she could
not trot comfortably or canter without
cross firing. With chiropractic and
MagnaWave treatments she has become "sounder" and stronger in her gaits,
besides more trusting of her rider.
My goal for her is in the next couple years will be to show her at recognized
Arabian/dressage shows before eventually breeding her first to a purebred Arab
stallion.
Page 16
Lily Creek Rhythm
Owned and Presented by Sherry Aune
Rhythm is the most incredible horse-athlete I have ever owned! I bought Rhythm from Joe &
Michelle Mattingly in 2012. She was the first horse I'd bought in 27
years, as I had been breeding my own.
In 2013 Rhythm completed 21 rides with eight 2nd, seven 1st and
eight Best Conditions (BC). Rhythm was PShR Champion Limited
Distance (LD) horse and ASAV high mileage Shagya. Rhythm was
also the AERC Midwest Region’s 1st LD mileage award and 2nd
place LD BC award.
In 2014 Rhythm went 810 endurance miles with a 100% completion rate. She finished in the
top ten in all but 1 ride, had three 1st and three BCs. Most notably, we did the Shore-to-Shore
five day 250 mile ride and Rhythm finished all 5 days, receiving 2 BC's and overall BC for the
250 mile ride! Rhythm’s AERC awards included Top Ten War Mare, Pioneer Middleweight 2nd
place, Midwest 1st place Endurance and Midwest BC 5th place.
2015 & 2016 turned out to be challenging years for me due to injuries, thus, the reason for
breeding Rhythm in 2016. Rhythm has now proven herself to be an awesome broodmare as
well. This foal has the best temperament, confirmation and athletic ability I have bred.

SA Te Jat
Owned by Chris and Marty Power, Presented by Marty Power
PShR Specialty Plus Award in Distance Riding (4635 miles) and Endurance Pace
We bought SA Te Jat from Daunna Sellers,
Sun Arab Stables, as a just started five
year old in 2003. Marty and Te began
their distance riding career the following
year and in 2004 he was the UMECRA
Reserve Champion Competitive Rookie of
the Year (loosing to Chris and H. Bikaver).
In 2005 Te was the UMECRA LW
Competitive Champion. In 2006, 2007,
2009 and 2010 Te completed in the
UMECRA top ten in whatever discipline
he competed (competitive, limited distance or endurance). In 2009 and 2016 Te
was the UMECRA, Versatility, Reserve Champion and the AHDRA, Versatility
Partbred, Champion. He is truly a versatile horse!
Page 18
WineGlass Vivant
Owned by Linda Rudolphi, Presented by Olivia Rudolphi
Vivant is the full brother to WineGlass Sherry, the 2013 Arabian Horse Association
National Champion Competitive Horse. He is also a son of Linda's all time favorite
riding horse, the purebred Arabian mare WineGlass Voodu. His grand-dam is the
successful endurance and competitive mare RushCreek Fawn ridden by Aunt
JoAnne Gernant. Fawn was a 1971
chestnut Arabian mare of straight
Harris breeding. JoAnne and Fawn
accumulated over 3,000 miles with
National and Regional AERC
endurance awards, UMECRA
Champion Competitive Champion 3
times, Top Ten Canadian National
Competitive Ride 1983, and Top Ten
IAHA Competitive National
Champion in 1978.
Page 19
WineGlass Dolchetto
Owned by Linda Rudolphi, Presented by Olivia Rudolphi
Sweet Dolchetto was a last minute substitute. As a green 3 year old she has
already proven her "will-do" attitude by learning to trot in hand, go through
Interior test obstacles and even beginning to lunge at the walk and trot in a very
short period of time. Dolchetto is a
full sister to WineGlass Dora, one of
the first PShR horses to complete all
the PShR mandatory and
performance criteria established in
2012 when the PShR became an ISG
member. Dolchetto has the
impressive distance riding uncles
Debonair and Dubonnet. In addition,
uncle Dominus who is starting his
second career as a trustworthy police
horse after a very successful distance
riding career.

Welcome to the first Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry Learner Judge session!
Whether you become an International Shagya-Arabian Society (ISG) judge or you are only interested in learning more about this
magnificent breed of horse - we are excited to have our learner judges with us today!
They will receive materials accumulated through the years in hopes it will not only explain, but make you aware of the
responsibilities we have as judges and breeders to the Shagya-Arabian horse. I cannot tell you how welcoming and willing to
share information the members of the International Shagya-Arabian community have been, most of this information is from their
generosity and dedication to the breed. One significant document is the welcome address Tamas Rombauer made to the 2007 ISG
Learner Judge Seminar in Babolna as he touched on several good points, one of my favorites being:
"We must recognize the each horse is a single station in the process of breeding."
To become a recognized ISG judge an individual needs to apprentice at a three shows and/or inspections; more may be required
depending on an individual’s scoring and/or the size of the events. The judging seminar at this inspection will count as one of
those apprenticeships. An official ISG Judging Session must be attended as another part of the requirements. These are only held
in Europe and are not an annual event. There may be several years in between, so if a session is scheduled I would recommend
you attend if you want to finish your training. Upon the completion of the required training the member organization, in this case
the PShR, will verify the training and would make the recommendation to the ISG for the individual to become an ISG judge. On
behalf of the PShR Board of Directors, enjoy your day and thank you for your participation.

Functions of the ISG
The ISG’s aim is the coordination of the Shagya Arab breeding in the
participating countries concerning the aims of breeding, the
preservation of the clean breed and the support of the Shagya Arab.
ISG represents the interests of Shagya Arab breeding internationally
ISG draws up guidelines regarding the stud books for its members. All
national stud books need to be accepted by the ISG.
The ISG has different types of members:
• National networks or stud farms, writing their own stud book or offering a special department for stud
books for Shagya Arabs.
• Individual breeders with a voting right and personal members of countries without a representative
office. Maximum membership is 5 years.
• Supportive members (Members supporting the ISG without a right to vote)
Every year, the ISG organizes a meeting of delegates, where next to delegates of the national networks and
stud farms, also individual breeders and supportive members are invited. Moreover every second year an
ISG European championship for Shagya Arabs is arranged by a national network and financially supported by
the ISG. The ISG carries out judgement training courses and seminars for judges. Furthermore the ISG offers
a list of official judges to organizers of shows.
National networks usually face following tasks:
• Approval of stallions and mares
• Placement of suitable breeding horses
• Taking stock of the whole Shagya Arab population
• Setting regulations concerning the stud books for the clean breed of Shagya Arabs accepted by the ISG
• Representing the interests of its members in national and international networks and boards
• Keeping an organized stud book
• Carrying out breeding shows, exhibitions and performance tests
• Answering questions of its members regarding breeding and keeping Shagya Arabs
• Arranging training courses and sports events
