Fall 2012….huge success for our Westside Wolf Band!!

A dinner, theatre style concert featuring the Westside H.S. Jazz and Percussion Ensembles.

Several students recently auditioned for and were selected for the Region 23 Honor Bands. Christian Crawley was placed in the Wind Ensemble, while Grace Estrada was placed in the Symphonic Band. Both qualified for Area and an opportunity to audition for All-State. As sophomores, Christian placed 7th out of 24 and Grace placed 4th. Also selected for Region in the Symphonic Band were Sabrii Anderson, Nathan Dunkelberger and Yue Li. Selected for the Freshman Band were Xavier Grays and Nick Penick. Recognized for the District Band was Renee Kleypas.

Houston All-City Band Auditions

Once again, the WHS Band students proved they are the BEST in HISD!! The 2012-2013 Houston All-City Band will be made up of 27 of our finest musicians. Of all the participating high schools, Westside had the largest number of students selected based on blind auditions. Don’t miss the concert held at Waltrip H.S. on Saturday, January 26th at 3:00 p.m.

CHOIR NOTES

Indoor Winter PercussionThe Westside Winter Percussion Ensemble has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming competition season through the Texas Color Guard Circuit and Winter Guard International. After making an amazing debut last winter season and being named the 2012 TCGC Open Class State Champions, our percussionists are looking to continue the tradition of excellence that has been set here at Westside High School. The group has a need for volunteers to aide in transporting percussion performers to the competitions. If you are a parent of one of the percussionists, please contact Mr. Sullens to pick a time to help out with transportation. If you are not a parent but want to help, please let Mr. Sullens know.

Our Westside Guard has jumped from a successful 1st Fall season into their 1st Winter Guard season. January, February and March will be filled with rehearsals and competitions for the group. The Guard’s show is entitled Dark Road. The music of Annie Lennox is brought to life on the floor through costuming, flag, rifle and dance. The Symphonic Strings had two performances this past December that proved the ensemble is continuing to have a superior year! On December 14th, the group traveled to West Briar MS to perform for the 7th and 8th grade orchestra students. This performance was the first of many hopeful collaborations with West Briar in an effort to build a stronger, bigger orchestra program at Westside. The Symphonic Strings traveled to the Houston Galleria Where they delighted shoppers with an hour’s worth of holiday music. Upcoming activities: Two performance contest (dates TBA) Spring Concert with the Jazz Band in May.
