“My son had such a great time during that week and after seeing how it changed his life, I want more students to have the same experience. On the last day he told me he didn’t want it to end!”
We take care of studentsThe Donna Reed Performing Arts Workshops in Denison provides a
place for performing arts to thrive in a Midwestern small-town setting.
It has taken many forms over the past twenty-three years since its
inception in 1987. It began as a small film tribute after Donna Reed
passed away in 1986, growing into a full-fledged festival of student
workshops by industry professionals and scholarship program centered
in Denison, Iowa, Donna Reed’s hometown.
This year we will continue providing high-quality education in
a relaxed, camp-like atmosphere where students are encouraged
to challenge themselves, and we’ve added a new workshop to help
students plan for higher education. Our instructors dare their students
to explore new methods of their craft, and anything else that pops up
along the way. Our most devoted and talented students are eligible to
win thousands of dollars in scholarships and merit awards.
It’s good for your characterWe also provide evening events that will enrich your creative experience
and character. We plan to have great performances to watch, and will
certainly leave some time to take the stage and show your own talents.
This is a great place to meet new friends and
mentors. When students leave the annual
Donna Reed Workshops, they take with
them skills and creative ideas that help
them for the rest of their lives.
Donna was like youDonnabelle Mullenger left her rural
home near Denison at 17 for educational
opportunities in Los Angeles. Her
Hollywood successes of the 1940s,
50s, and 60s came from hard work,
ambition, vision, and values. She valued
knowledge, experience, and education
in ways that would inspire the creation
of the Donna Reed Foundation, an
organization dedicated to keeping the
dreams of students in the performing
arts alive. Now students are
growing in new and amazing
ways every year in Denison
thanks to the compassion and
hindsight of its Hollywood
namesake, Donna Reed.

“Festival students learn more than skills, confidence, or insights of a single developmental path. They tap into a unique continuum where the only competition is to reach for something real, sustainable, and meaningful within their own lives and communities. Performing arts are only a framework for these lessons—sometimes the discoveries lead above and beyond.” (In Search of Donna Reed, p. 139)

Housing for workshop participants ages 13 to 18 is available on a limited basis with local families. This is a personal touch by Denison families who have volunteered to welcome workshop participants to our community. We recommend that housing requests be made before May 15, 2009, as space is limited and available only on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please fill out the housing application on page 12 and send it with the registration form. You and your parents are required to sign the housing conduct contract to the right on this page. Please read the contract carefully. The Foundation has zero tolerance toward students breaking this contract, and you will be sent home at your own expense immediately.
Housing fees are payable before housing is assigned, and are nonrefundable (except when housing is denied due to limited space or if your written cancellation is received in our office by June 12, 2009). These fees are for the administration of the housing program and do not go to the host families.
You will be matched with a local family. Meals and transportation are not included with the housing contract, unless you discuss and agree upon this with your host family before your arrival. A shuttle is available during the day and evening events for limited travel. Please respect that your host is volunteering to open their home and you are their guest.
We will confirm your housing as quickly as possible, and will notify you of your host family’s name and phone number. It is your responsibility to contact them with your arrival date and time as soon as possible to make arrangements for your arrival. If you have questions, please contact the Donna Reed Foundation at 712-263-3334.
Housing contract (must be signed)We, the undersigned, the participant and participant’s guardians, agree to the following:
1. We agree that the participant will treat his or her host family with respect and let them know where he or she will be at all times, in case of an emergency. We also agree that the participant will abide by his or her host family’s house rules and conduct himself or herself appropriately while staying with his or her host family.
2. We agree that the participant will be at his or her host family’s home by 11:00 p.m. each evening, unless circumstances prevent this and it is otherwise agreed upon by his or her host family. (The curfew for minors in Denison is 11:00 p.m..)
3. We agree that the participant will not drink alcoholic beverages, smoke, or use any illegal drugs. (Iowa law states no one under 21 can purchase or consume alcoholic beverages, and no one under 18 can purchase or use tobacco products.)
4. We understand that host families are not required to provide meals or transportation. We understand that participants are responsible for their own meals and transportation during their stay in Denison. Shuttle transportation is available.
5. We understand if the participant fails to abide by this contract we, the participant and the parents of the participant, will be notified and the following will occur:
A. The participant will be excluded from classes and all other Donna Reed Workshops events for the remainder of the week.B. The participant will be sent home at his or her own expense. Participant and his or her parents or legal guardians will be responsible for travel arrangements.
6. We understand that the participant’s host family will receive a copy of this Housing Contract.
