March 2018 Adar – Nisan 5778 Volume 101 Number 5
The upcoming festival of Pesach brings
with it a special opportunity for Tzedakah.
In days gone by, our ancestors wanted to
ensure that every Jew would have Matzah
with which to celebrate Pesach. Aware that
poor people might not be able to afford the
ingredients to make matzah, our ancestors
developed the custom of donating MaotChitim – literally “Coins for Wheat.” In our own time and place, this
mitzvah has expanded to a community-wide endeavor to ensure that
poor Jews have adequate food for a proper Pesach Seder celebration.
This year, we at TBI will have a number of options for fulfilling this
mitzvah:
• You can donate directly to TBI’s Maot Chitim Fund and we will
pass that money along to the agencies that purchase, pack, and
deliver the food to poor Jews in our metropolitan area. Soon you
will receive a Maot Chitim request letter from me with a return
envelope and I encourage you to be as generous as you can.
• TBI is organizing our own cadre of volunteers to deliver the Maot Chitim packages. If we have at least 20 delivery teams (it helps if
there is a driver and at least one helper per car) then Maot Chitimwill bring the boxes to TBI for us to deliver. The delivery date is
Sunday, March 25th and deliveries will begin around 10:00 a.m.
To register as a volunteer delivery team, please contact the Temple
Office.
• This year, because there is no Sunday School on March 25th, we
are inviting delivery teams to join us for bagels, orange juice, and
coffee at 9:00 a.m. at TBI. If you are in town, this is a great family
tzedakah opportunity. Over bagels we will have a brief discussion
about the mitzvah of Maot Chitim and orient volunteers (especially
kids) about what to expect when you make your deliveries. Please
let us know if you are coming for bagels, etc. by contacting the
Temple office.
• If you are interested in volunteering to help pack the boxes, you
can sign up individually for the March 18th packing event with
Maot Chitim (https://maotchitim.org). You must be at least 12 years
old to help with the packing and there is an after Sunday school
packing shift.
• Our fifth-grade class is coordinating our annual TBI project of
assisting two needy families at Pesach time. All School families
will soon receive specific information about this project.
At the Pesach Seder we recite: “Kol Dichfin Yeitei v’Yeichul Let all
who are hungry, come and eat.” Choosing one or more of the above
options will help to make those words come true. I hope that you can
join me.

FROM ThE PRESIdEnT
Why do we live in communities? Why do we belong
to organizations? Why do we have synagogues? Much
research has shown that, along with a healthy diet and
consistent exercise, other secrets to a long, healthy life
is engagement in a community, talking to neighbors,
having relationships with our fellow humans, our
coworkers, our peers, etc.
TBI provides an opportunity for you to extend your life.
As Jews, we need one another. Being together is good for us.
Sometimes, I can be a bit of a homebody. I can stay home, watch a
sporting event, walk my dogs, listen to a podcast, and not interact with
the community. But I need the social interaction. It’s good for me.
Talking to people and engaging intellectually is an important way to
engage one’s mind and to improve one’s life. TBI is a place where we
form lasting friendships, stimulate learning, and become part of a family.
Take a look at our website, www.tbiskokie.org, to see what is
happening. Check out some of the recent social action projects our
community has been engaged in and look to get involved in future
projects. Look at the calendar and see when the next meeting is
scheduled. New participants are always welcome.
Come for an early musical Kabbalat Shabbat Service where you can
have a nosh, visit with friends and still enjoy Shabbat dinner at home
after services or go out with friends you meet at services. Or come after
dinner to a later Friday service (7:30). Enjoy a Torah service and stay for
a lovely Oneg Shabbat where you can catch up with friends and meet
new friends.
Take advantage of the educational opportunities we offer. There are
discussions of current events, discussions with renowned authors, and
throughout the Spring (ok, it’s still winter, but we can hope) on Monday
evenings, Rabbi Weinberg will present a series grappling with the ideas
and values that shape the meaning of modern Israel, Zionism, and
Jewish identity today.
Come for the Lunch and Learn on March 3 to hear about our long-
time Rabbi Mendelsohn, after our Saturday morning worship service.
Or just come on a Sunday morning and grab a cup of coffee at the
Nosh Café, maybe a snack, too.
I know that the conversations I’ve had, friendships I’ve begun or
enhanced, and the knowledge I’ve gained in the worship services,
educational programs or the socializing before, during or after these
programs have enriched my life, made me a better person, and perhaps
even improved my health and longevity. Don’t miss your opportunity to
do the same. Our 100th year celebration continues through Shavuot!
Make sure you don’t miss out on the last few months of the celebration.
Make a special note to mark April 28 on your calendar so you can
celebrate at our Centennial Gala!
It’s good for you.

Thanks to the Mitzvah Corps and all who helped me get through a
physically and emotionally traumatic time in my life.
On December 20, 2017 I entered the hospital for an anterior hip
replacement with full anticipation of a rapid recovery and return to
normal. On December 21, 2017 I was discharged to confront a family
catastrophe followed by a fall, fracture, and a difficult and complicated
second surgery. In the prolonged recovery period I faced weeks of
isolation at home and emotional decompensation.
During that time multiple Temple members brought me amazing
food (we should open a restaurant). I am eternally grateful to those
members who were able to come by and talk for a few hours, providing
me with contact with people which I so desperately needed, and for
those who drove me to doctor appointments and eventually to work in
the morning through grueling rush hour traffic enabling me to return to
work where I began to feel human and useful once again. In addition,
the support of our Rabbi whom we all recognize as a superb human
being, and of Lori who provided support and organized this amazing
rescue squad were tremendously helpful.
I can honestly say I do not know if I would have survived intact if
it had not been for Temple members, my oldest son, and a personal
friend who were truly my only support during this time. I am deeply
grateful to all who helped and cannot begin to tell you how important
the human element was in my recovery.

FROM ThE dIRECTOR OF COngREgATIOnAL LEARnIng
In a few short weeks we will be gathering around our collective Seder tables to celebrate Passover.
Passover may not be the harbinger of spring in Chicago that it is for those living in the State of Israel, but spring will come; and, although
Passover might be a bit chillier this year as it is pretty early, we still have hope. We are a people who hope.
Hatikva, Israel’s national anthem, which is being taught in halls and classrooms of TBI as we approach Israel’s 70th birthday, translates
literally as The Hope. We are hopeful and we mark time. Our calendar takes us through a regular and repeated cycle each and every year,
bringing comfort and anticipation of what is still to come.
The spring holidays come at us in rapid succession. Purim with its silliness is followed by the spring festival when we tell the story of the Jewish people
marking arguably the single greatest event in our history which gave us a land, a purpose, and an appreciation of freedom.
The Yoms (as we affectionately call them) bring a mix of profound sadness and memory in Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) and sadness into
celebration with Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel’s Memorial Day and Independence Day respectively).
In about a month we will celebrate Israel’s 70th birthday. It has been a year of birthdays for our community and for the Jewish people. In the fall we
commemorated 100 years since the Balfour Declaration, in January, our own 100th birthday and, in a few weeks, Israel’s 70th.
As we move from one emotion to another, from one celebration to another, we remain united. We gain strength from our communal celebrations and
commemorations and provide memory and meaning for those around us.
May you each have holidays filled with love, family, and memory making.
B’shalom, Lori B. Sagarin
A RESOUndIng ThAnk YOU FOR TBI 100Th BIRThdAY PARTYWhat a wonderful night! On January 31, 2018, exactly one hundred years since TBI’s incorporation, over 400 of us gathered to celebrate the longevity and
sustainability of Temple Beth Israel.
An event such at this could not have gone so smoothly without the efforts of many members. Thank you to all the many volunteers who decorated, schlepped,
registered, shopped, served, cleared, and did all the myriad of tasks it takes to make our birthday party a huge success. It truly takes a village!
Thanks to all who brought goodies to fill the Birthday bags. We were able to create and deliver a mountain of bags to share our birthday with kids who don’t
have the opportunity to celebrate with a birthday party.
Our celebrations continue throughout the year. We’re not only celebrating 100 years, but we are also lighting the way to our future!
Lisa Drucker and Judy Kemp – Centennial year Co-Chairs
I love singing choral music, being a part of something that is greater than the sum of its parts. I also gain tremendous satisfaction
from directing and teaching, seeing and hearing Koleynu achieve more and more with each rehearsal. The members of Koleynu,
too, feel a sense of awe when singing with one another, and when joining a larger ensemble as we do each year at Zemer Am.
Zemer Am is the Chicago-Milwaukee Jewish Choral Festival. This year our festival took place at Congregation Shalom in
Milwaukee on February 18th. Last year I had the privilege of serving as the Artistic Director of the festival, which was held at TBI.
Our Artistic Director for 2018 is Enid Bootzin Berkovits, the director of the Milwaukee Jewish Community Chorale. For the first time,
Koleynu will combine with Kol Simcha, the Adult Choir of Temple Judea Mizpah, to sing at the festival. In preparation, we have had
two joint rehearsals with Kol Simcha and their director, Shawna Rosen. At Zemer Am, Koleynu will have the opportunity to rehearse and sing with
choirs from throughout the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. That afternoon we will present a concert of Jewish music that is free and open to the
public. We participate in Zemer Am each year to experience, even for a day, what it is like to be in a large ensemble, to feel a part of the whole.
This month, I am thrilled to be a part of another choral experience, HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir. For four days in March Shawna
Rosen and I will take our chapter, HaZamir Chicago, to New York to rehearse and prepare for the 25th Annual HaZamir Festival. The festival will
culminate in a magnificent concert at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center on Sunday, March 18 at 4:00 p.m. This is my first season as a HaZamir
conductor. Our Chicago chapter is part of 38 chapters across the United States and Israel. Our mission is Jewish teen engagement through music.
Whether I am working with Jewish teens from across Chicagoland, or our own adult choir, Koleynu here at Temple Beth Israel, I believe whole-
heartedly in the power that music has to shape who we are. Listening to, participating in, and experiencing Jewish music helps to form our Jewish
identity and provides a soundtrack to our lives. If you are interested in experiencing great Jewish music, I would love to have a conversation with you.
Joy & Blessings, Marla Aviva Bentley

SISTERhOOd nEwS T’fillot Nashim (Women’s Prayers) is always a highlight of Sisterhood
Temple Beth Israel. This year our celebration was bittersweet. In years
past our Sisterhood member, Gale Nudlemanz"l, served as Chaplain and
was the creative force (with very able volunteers) of this Service. Gale’s
love of Sisterhood, love of Temple Beth Israel, and love of Avodah
(worship/prayer) imbued our T’fillot Nashim services with meaning,
community, and inspiration. Gale was certainly here in spirit for this
year’s service. We know she would have been quite proud of how the
weekend turned out.
As with so many events we hold at TBI, this one would never have
been possible without all the dedicated and creative volunteers. There
are too many to name individually but please accept our heartfelt thanks.
A special todah rabah to the Chairs of the weekend; Co-Chaplains Sue
Schneider and Linda Janush; Weekend Coordinator Andrea Blain;
Luncheon Chair Sharrel Titlebaum; Oneg Coordinator Pam Lavine; and
the beautiful voices of Koleynu.
We were honored to have as our guest speaker Rabbi Marla Feldman,
Executive Director of Women of Reform Judaism. Here are some of her
thoughts:
Also attending the weekend events was Janet Buckstein, President of
WRJ Midwest District. She shared the following:
Once again thank you to all who participated in this spiritually uplift-
ing weekend.
The power of women gathering is immeasurable.

women at TBI. The warmth of your community
more than compensated for the chilly Chicago
air. It was an honor to help your community
celebrate its Centennial, to learn about your
amazing accomplishments over the years, and
to share a bit of WRJ history. And what a
special weekend to be with you as we com-
memorated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. as well as the WRJ women who
inspired us with their vision and devotion to
justice over these past hundred years. TBI
women are following in their footsteps and living
their legacy. We are blessed by your leadership
and we are made stronger by the work you do.
Mazal tov on your milestone anniversary. As the
WRJ motto says, “We are Stronger Together!”
Achieving a centennial anniversary – 100 years – is an enormous
accomplishment for any organization; but to remain as strong,
vibrant, and dedicated to the WRJ movement today as at their
founding is truly remarkable. I have had the privilege to know and
work with many of your members, both current and past leaders,
and know that you are smart, energetic, and possess a spirit and
passion for sustaining our Jewish values, to fostering worldwide
Tikkun Olam and a vibrant future for Reform Judaism. I was quite
honored to be included in your T’fillot Nashim celebrations and
to join in your services during the weekend and must say that I
was blown away by your warmth and generosity in including
women in WRJ leadership roles from throughout the greater
Chicago metropolitan area. Twenty-four sisterhood presidents
and district leaders attended the Saturday service and lunch
and were able to meet with WRJ Executive Director Rabbi
Marla Feldman at a special work session that you hosted and
coordinated. So, on behalf of WRJ, thank you Temple Beth Israel
Sisterhood women, thank you TBI sisterhood leaders, and thank
you to everyone who played a hand in making this celebration so
special for us all!

Schneider and Linda Janush; Weekend Coordinator Andrea Blain;

I hope that you can
join me.
