From the Parochial Vicar, Fr. Pedro Mercado, Jr. I Am Sending an Angel Ahead of You to Guard You (Ex. 23:20)

Have you ever wondered who the angels are and what do they do? In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we can read much of what the Catholic Church teaches us about the angels. “Angels have been present since creation and throughout the history of salvation, … [they have] assisted the prophets, [and] Gabriel announced the birth of the Precursor and that of Jesus himself (CCC, 332, http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s2c1p5.htm). There are angels who serve as God’s messengers and others who tend to the needs of people. Some angels look after us whereas others

rejoice with us. They pray for us and are a support for us in our daily lives. Jesus exclaims “there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents” ( Luke 15:10). Angels have different tasks. In Sacred Scripture we can read about Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel (also known as Archangels). Fr. William Saunders in Archangels and Guardian Angels explains, “They are called archangels because of their important roles in God's plan. St. Michael, whose name means ‘Who is like God?’ led the army of angels who cast Satan and the rebellious angels into hell; at the end of time, he will wield the sword of justice to separate the righteous from the evil (cf. Rv. 12:7-0). St. Gabriel, whose name means ‘Strength of God,’ announced to Mary that she had been chosen as the Mother of the Savior (cf. Lk. 1:26-38).

St. Raphael, whose name means "Remedy of God," cured the blind man Tobit (cf. Tb. 5)” (Saunders, Archangels and Guardian Angels, 1). We might also recall in Revelation 12:7-9 that Saint Michael and the angels battle the dragon, “Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.” Saint Michael can be called upon or invoked when we feel an evil presence among us, when we feel that we are in danger from an enemy. All angels have special tasks but the guardian angels are called to bring the light of God to us, to remind us of God’s presence among us, and to be with us at all times. In Psalm 91: 10-12 we read, “No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent. For he commands his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go. With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” God has given us so many means to come to Him. We have of course our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we have the saints, we have the Sacraments, and among many others we have the angels! Let us call upon the angels to guide us towards our Lord. A great way to do this would be to attend Mass on the feast of the Archangels (September 29) and the feast of the Guardian Angels (October 2).

All the angels can help us to get closer to God, we just have to be open enough to believe in their presence and in their help. Let us acclaim them in our daily lives and when we worship God in our personal prayer, in our prayer with the community, and most especially in the Mass. Teacher your children to pray to their guardian angels with this bedtime prayer:

Angel of God, My guardian dear, To Whom His love commits me here,

Ever this night be at my side, To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

PARISH & MINISTRY NEWS

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members

of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and

physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing

presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make

broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special

people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking

you for all your gifts. We ask this through Lord Jesus who healed

Del vicario parrochial, P. Pedro Mercado, Jr.

Santo Tomas More

(CCC,332,http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism_sp/p1s2c1p5_sp.html#I%20Los%20%C3%

A1ngeles).

38). San Rafael, cuyo nombre significa "Remedio de Dios", curó al ciego Tobías (ver Tb. 5)" (Saunders,

Archangels and Guardian Angels, 1).
