This drive was topublicize the 46th Annual Seminar as well as torecruit new members. I would like to thank bothof them and also in particular Mr. JahangirKamaldin for their active role. As a result, wehave recruited 73 new ordinary members witha good number of clinicians and workingpathologists as members and 2 Coporatemembers for the year 2009 (names appears inthis newsletter).

I regret to inform that the Registrar ofSocieties at Putrajaya has rejected the applicationfor the formation of the Federation of AseanParasitologist earlier this year. This matter willbe discussed in details at the forth coming AGMon 24th March, 2010.

Beginning 2010, our Annual Scientificseminar will be known as the Annual ScientificConference, due to its active participation. It ismy dream and vision that by 2020, it should beknown as the Annual Scientific Congress. I hopethe in-coming Presidents will work for thisstatus.

A winner of the Sandosham Medal and theSociety’s Silver Medal will be announced thisyear. The Sandosham Memorial lecture will bedelivered by Prof Dr. Mak Joon Wah, Dean,Postgraduate Studies and Research, IMU on the25th March 2010.

With a sad heart I inform all the demise ofan honorary member, Prof ChamlongHarinasuta. We carried the full obituary of ProfDr. Chamlong Harinasuta in the TropicalBiomedicine Journal Vol. 26. No.3, December2009. I thank Prof Emeritus Dato’ Dr. C. P.Ramachandran for providing the write up andDr. V. Indra for publishing it with excellentphotographs of him.

Due to his demise, there was a vacancy in theHonorary Membership. The council hasnominated Prof Dr. Mak Joon Wah to fill thisvacancy and await for the endorsement at theforthcoming AGM. A vacancy for the post oftrustee existed and the council has nominatedDr. Inder Singh.

Mr. S. Parameswaran of the Epidemiologyand Biostatistic Unit, IMR is the Chairman forthe Outreach Program. He is in the process oforganizing talks with the retired grass root

members who have excelled well. This will bean on-going program for 2010-2011 session.

Based on last year’s AGM the council haswithdrew from the membership from COSTAM.As president I feel the strong urge that weshould continue the membership. This will betabled at the AGM on 24th March, 2010.

To date the council had met 12 times, MsWong Yi Ching of Medigene Sdn Bhd has beenco-opted into the council. I thank her in assistingfinancial support for last Mid Year Seminar.

Regarding the CPE, we managed to host onlyone for this session. On 16th November 2009, Dr.Robert I. Ross from USA, gave a talk on“Biotechnology in Controlling Mosquitoes” atIMR, KL. I thank Drs. Mohd Khadri Shahar andNazni Wasi Ahmad for the effort.

The constitution review sub-committeeheaded by Mr. John Jeffery has been inactive. Ifeel that this is crucial, as there is a need forclauses to be reviewed in the constitution. It ishoped that this sub-committee will during the2010-2011 session attend to this need.

Due to time constraint, the council of PastPresidents were not able to meet. It is also notedthat a small number of Past President has notcontinued their membership. As President, Iurge those in arrears to pay RM150 and continuetheir membership (based on the constitution).

I am also pleading to all senior retiredmembers with MSPTM materials and old photosto hand them over to the society for safekeepingand records of the society. This calling cameabout when the society lost the originalregulation certificates from the ROS. We haveobtained new copies from the ROS. This has nowbeen framed and will be officially handed overto the in-coming President during the handlingover the chain of office.

As regards the society’s Website, Mr. LeeWoon Kai had made some improvements aftermeeting the council on two occasions. Mr. ChangKum Wah, the Vice President has agreed torender his services to the website.

New techniques, new updates andnew skills were acquired during this valuableattachment and applicable in my futureresearch in forensic entomology. The trainingbegan with introduction to forensicentomology on the first day, followed bycollection and pinning of insects specimens. On the third day, Dr Cameron and hisresearcher Ms. Amoret Whitakerdemonstrated the processing forensic maggotscollected from corpses. This includedpreservation method and mounting ofmaggots on to slides. The training ended withbasic and advance adult fly taxonomy.

I would like to acknowledge the MalaysianSociety of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine(MSPTM) for supporting my application forthe attachment to the Natural HistoryMuseum.
