If you ask me…... I’m very proud of building such an extreme yacht on a practically impossible time schedule
and supplying such a superior quality product. I thank everyone who believed in Persico,
particularly Jason and Ian, two highly experienced people who made a great contribution.
I thank everyone who collaborated on this project, working nights and holidays to have the
best possible entry for the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race. I still experience a feeling of
excitement when I think about the final negotiations at Abu Dhabi in August 2010, where it
was over 40° Centigrade and we couldn’t even eat or drink because it was Ramadan. I feel
a sense of belonging to a team and, when the yacht won the Rolex Fastnet race in August
2011, I felt I was just one piece of the puzzle. There were so many variables, and so many
people were responsible for the victory - the designers, builders, suppliers, sailing team and
clients. My thanks to all of you.

Persico was proud to have been selected to build the new generation, state-of-
the-art Farr Yacht Design Volvo 70 for Abu Dhabi’s challenge to win the 2011-
2012 ocean race.
Persico handled everything from the tooling of the hull to more than 50 newly de-
signed concept tools for multiple pre-preg parts of different shapes and sizes.
The thirty strong dedicated Persico staff led by Mark Somerville worked 6 days a
week and on average 240 hours each month to develop the design into reality with
outstanding quality. They developed materials and processes to achieve the best
mechanical properties and minimize part weights to an incredible level.
Persico worked closely with FYD and the team to design some very detailed ergo-
nomic interior parts that integrated the structure with needed storage and systems
and created a very refined easy-to-use minimalist interior that has raised the eye-
brows of many sailing veterans and designers.
The latest aerospace products and processes were used to guarantee the reliabil-
ity of final part properties. Persico built or managed the construction of the keel,
bulb and rudders in house to ensure that the time schedule of the entire project

performed like clockwork. Everything had
to be of perfect quality and ready to be as-
sembled and installed into the yacht. Quality
checks were made by the officials at intervals
to maintain class rules and to keep everyone
in check!
Nothing was too small or too large or too com-
plicated for us. We found ways to solve all the
issues and make all the components better,
smaller and faster.
At the end of the day, the beautiful yacht was
launched on time and Persico had a hand in
every aspect of the construction from the bulb
to smallest of carbon structures. We launched
the yacht in La Spezia on time and under-
weight. The team went on to win the Fastnet
in record-breaking time, so we are delighted
with the results so far! We are looking forward
to the start of the Volvo later this month and
wish the team all the best for a very success-
ful journey throughout the Volvo challenge.
We know you can do it! We did!

Performanceis leaving the competition in your wake
Future Fibres supplied a fully customized
mast and rigging package for the Abu
Dhabi Ocean Racing team.
The accuracy of our aluminium tooling ena-
bled the team to design and build the Abu
Dhabi rig to meet the tolerances of the Volvo
Ocean Race rules. The complete Abu Dhabi
mast and rigging package came in 0.3%
underweight, i.e., exactly what we designed
it to be.
The rigging on the boat is a true reflection
of Future Fibres´ latest technology and our
mantra for providing the right fibre for the
right application. The lateral rigging and
bobstay are made from TSC solid carbon
rod, which has proved to be the smallest
diameter and lowest windage in the fleet.
The aft rigging and fixed forestay are made
from the innovative, flexible carbon product
“FlexC™”, which combines all the benefits
of carbon fibre (stiffness, strength and ex-
cellent fatigue resistance) with the flexibil-
ity, impact resistance and general handling
benefits of a dry fibre cable. Finally, all of the
high performance torsional cables and other
strops and in-mast deflectors are PBO for
their light weight and stiffness.
And the result: Ian Walker has certainly
been impressed with the quality of work-
manship on the Abu Dhabi rig. Speaking the
day after the VO70 was officially launched,
he commented:
“I think the rig’s awesome. It’s every bit as
clean and neat as I could have hoped. The
locks and fittings are working really well. It’s
early days, of course, but thus far I would say
this is the best rig I’ve ever seen. The attention
to detail, the windage reductions, the clean-
ness of the rigging in terms of spreader ends
and aerodynamics: it really is impressive”.
